Stopped in at Le Pain Quotidien in DC. I had no idea this was a chain, honestly, because the service and atmosphere felt like an independently owned cafe. Service was polite and on point. There was a new team member being trained during our visit, and both she and the lead were fantastic. The way the staff talked to one another was friendly and helpful, and you could tell there's a real common goal here - good food and good service for the customer. Refreshing to see. My wife had a cheese danish and a Belgian Mocha, and I had an almond croissant with a cappuccino. Both drinks were terrific and clearly crafted with care. I'm always in awe of good latte art, and that's what completes the coffeehouse experience for me. The danish and croissant were fresh and flavorful, perfect pairings with our drinks. The cafe itself is clean, has inviting decor, and plenty of seating. The wait staff checked in regularly, which showed real commitment to customer satisfaction. Heading down the street this place caught our eye and we figured we give it a shot. The place itself is very cozy and welcoming, the girl in the front was polite and very king leading us in the right direction. As we were waiting to get seated they were quick to respond but took their time getting to us afterwards. Even to order a drink we waited approximately 10-15 minutes to even put in an order. Fortunately we were working so we stayed busy but it took forever to get a coffee. Once we received the coffee we weren't able to order food because it was a "drop and go" type of service. At this point, we flagged down another waiter, who we asked to order a chicken sandwich, I do not remember the name of it because unfortunately, we never received it. At this point one of my photos, you see the woman in front of us get assistance and get their food promptly. Like I stated prior we were working so we were busy, but we were constantly looking up trying to get anyone's attention. At this point, I was not in the mood to ask for a manager and or to complain. But overall, the service was lacking, and it took forever to get a drink and we didn't receive our food because either it was not put into the system and or was nonexistent. I personally had to get up and ask for the check because we were not checked on in 20 to 30 minutes. As you can tell by all my other reviews, I had a great experience at all these other places in DC. We stopped by Le Pain Quotidien for breakfast since our hotel gave us a gift card, and it was such a nice start to the day. The bakery case looked incredible! Unfortunately, they were sold out of the almond croissants, so we grabbed the giant chocolate chip cookie instead. It was perfectly crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and absolutely delicious. I ordered the vegetarian caprese sandwich with a pistachio latte (served in a giant mug, which I loved!), and my husband really enjoyed his chicken sandwich. The cafe is clean, has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and even has a bathroom, making it a great spot to relax before exploring the city. I'd definitely stop by again! read more

The ambiance inside is truly adorable. Welcoming and warm, I enjoyed sitting in here and working. However, although our server was very kind, the service itself was very slow even during a slow time on a Wednesday morning. The food looked good but we never received what we ordered after being there for two hours. The only thing we received was an iced dirty chai latte which was okay. Of course it came with avocado- I think half the menu included avocado, and a side salad with a strong vinaigrette dressing, and 2 pieces of bread on the side. I also ordered the strawberry brioche babka- it was light and fluffy, with a very, very mild flavor. I wish it would have been a little sweeter. Another decent chain with good food to check out. The staff are excellent and the avocado toast is also quite good for breakfast. They have a funky practice if serving americano coffees in a small soup bowl, which I rather enjoy. The ambience is ok to good. It is set up to serve a lot of people at once. Coffee was weak, and the service was so poor I ended up sitting around for twice as long as I should have, just waiting to order and get my food. I had to walk to the counter to pay, just to get someone to close out my ticket. And the food - egg sammy had 3x the amount of bread needed, the outside was so oily! I ended up removing the top piece of bread and using fork and knife on it because I didn't want greasy fingers the rest of the day. Flavor was flat - no salt, no pepper, nothing. Not overly friendly, overly attentive, or overly engaged which is fine if that's your thing, but I like to chat and hear things like, my name is ---- I'll be your server, or even a my name is ---- let me know if I can get you anything. My croque monsieur was okay, nothing to write home about. My husband had the quiche, he loved it, I tried it and again it was okay. He also had a tomato soup that he wasn't a fan of, yet I really liked it, but it was because it had chunks of tomato and felt more like it should have been on pasta rather than calling it a soup, so I get it. I was seated right away, but service after was very, very slow. My server was pleasant, but not overtly friendly or busy. She simply took her time and was often just leaning against the counter. The food was delicious, but a little overpriced as many of the other reviews are saying. I ordered a chai tea which really hit the spot. The chicken mozzarella melt was also divine, but I hate when my food is a struggle to eat. The pieces were big enough where they were difficult to handle. The bread was too soggy to simply pick up, but the crust too stiff to cut. Again, it was delicious, but it was a bit of a challenge. Not really looking for work in a meal when you aren't expecting it! All in all, this is a cozy and sweet spot, but only if you have extra time and money to spare. read more

Large location right downtown with an expansive menu and delicious-looking pastries! I went for breakfast on a weekday morning and while it wasn't too busy inside, the service was a little slow. Everyone that worked here was extremely friendly, but it took a while to get our check. I ordered the egg, cheddar and avocado sandwich, although I had a hard time deciding what to order because of the large menu! Everyone on their menu sounded so good and the pastries that were on display had my mouth watering. The sandwich came with a nice little side salad, although it didn't really go with breakfast. On the way out, I ordered one of their crookies (the chocolate chip one) since I've been dying to try one for a while. I highly recommend the chocolate chip crookie for all the sweet lovers out there! It was honestly such a great balance between the chocolate chip cookie part and the croissant. I wait, server may be giving me time to decide. Another server whose section I apparently was not in reminds the server drying the cutlery that she should go take my order -- again, it is quite obvious I'm ready to order. This server again looks my way and then returns to drying cutlery. I scrape chair back and leave. I've been living in DC for less than a month and I've come to this location about 4-5 times. It is a little pricey, but the quality of the food and the service just absolutely overpower anything. I will literally pay anything if it means I'm getting quality items and excellent service anyway. The staff here is always extremely friendly and always greet you with a smile on their face. When it comes to the food, it's just perfect every time. I have yet to have a less than perfect experience when I visit here. My go to has been the smoked salmon and Greek yogurt omelette. Also, their portions are ridiculously big for anyone complaining about their prices...They give you huge amounts which is fantastic. Sometimes I have trouble finishing my meal and coffee! I've also had their skillet based eggs which are on the smaller side but still amazing. I love coming here and will continue to come here! read more

I came here for dinner with a friend. The menu had so many tasty options, we didn't know what to get... and then we learned that breakfast was served all day - a total game changer! The waiter gave us his recommendations, and the skillet eggs - two eggs cooked sunny-side up in a skillet and topped with avocado and crispy onions (or bacon and scallions) - sounded too good to pass up. They also have omelettes and a hearty breakfast bowl worth considering. Since the restaurant was practically empty when we arrived (~5:45pm), and only one other table came to dine-in while we were there, I was expecting the food to come out quicker than it did (though the wait time was still reasonable). Our waiter was super friendly when he gave us recommendations, but his attention and service waned significantly after we received our food. He never came to check on us once the food was brought out and only resurfaced at the end of the meal to clear dishes and bring us the check. In terms of food, the dish wasn't bland per se, but the grey sea salt and cracked black pepper - strategically placed on every table - are welcome additions. The skillet eggs were served with a piece of toast and a slice of their baguette (good if you love your carbs like I do :9). For a $12 dish, the cafe does have a more upscale feel and the food is fresher than Panera Bread or Corner Bakery, but the portion size was small, and all in all - it's pricey for what you're getting. My friend ordered the goat cheese and mushroom omelette which was packed with goat cheese and comes with a side salad and bread. Her dish ($13) was a more generous portion size and I think better value, but despite the nice ambiance, it's hard to justify returning at these price points. read more
