My experience started off with a unwelcoming and bitter greeting. When we finally got sat we were unfortunately misgreeted by the server by at least 10 minutes. When she finally arrived at the table we ordered off the lunch menu but found that it was only happy hour menu. That was fine and we decided to order onion rings and tacos. Then we received our food. With the first bite of my taco I was greeted by a hair. It was similar enough to mine so I brushed it off until I found another one in my ranch. Then it was clear- this is not my hair. Our server barely checked in on our table the entire dining experience, so when we finally flagged her down she apologized and informed us that she would grab a manager. We waited for a long time until we had flagged down another server to grab the manager. The manager finally came and stated that he would take off the onion rings and the tacos. The server said her parting words before we even got the check. And when we did finally receive the check only the onion rings were comped off. At that point we didn't care, we just wanted to leave. I work in the restaurant industry myself so I am aware that in the midst of a global pandemic, things are a little more stressful.. However, this does not constitute the poor service that I had received. I hate writing bad reviews, but I also dislike bad dining experiences. Sadly, I will not be back. read more

Food is generally good, but if you're celebrating a special occasion, I wouldn't recommend it as our service was lacking :( I was so excited to go to a dinner here as I had a great time at a brunch pre-covid! Went to take our out of town friends for a birthday dinner on a Friday evening. Maybe they were short staffed, but we literally sat there for 15-20 minutes before anyone came and took our drink orders. It took another 15 minutes for the drinks to arrive. It took another 15 minutes for someone to come take our food order. I don't think anyone should wait 30-45 minutes to order food. Our drinks: natural margarita - if you like margaritas, this is not for you! It did not taste like one. It tasted like tequila and cucumber water only. I had to ask for agave in a cup and our waitress said "no problem!" And forgot until I waited another 20 minutes and reminded her :( Kombucha drink was also watered down. Maybe it's the ice melting before it gets to our table? maybe stick with beer here! Food was generally good. We ordered a lot of steak dishes, some came lukewarm (maybe because they had to walk it from the kitchen through to the outside?) I would have totally understood. But just the lack / slowness of service (eg no one came to refill water, not even once) made this experience not what it should be (which when you are celebrating, really hurts the ambience!) I think they just need to hire more servers? Or maybe go at a non busy time! This little big restaurant is located on Pacific Coast Hwy just north of Leucadia. I say little big due to it appears smallish from the street but once you're in it goes back a considerable amount and can seat a pretty large crowd. The parking lot, well now it is small and you may need to park on the street. They have outside seating as well as inside and they are dog friendly. That is a plus for us as we have two dogs that love to go for rides in the car. Live music 7-10pm most nights from blues to flamenco, nice variety. We started off with the spicy calamari strips with macadamia nuts. Pretty good, the calamari was tender and had a good flavor and came on a bed of fresh greens. The only negative was that it was previously fried and refried again when ordered. You could probably ask for fresh and get it....I'm going to do that next time. First time here so we went with some other yelpers reviews for the Cuban! Very popular sandwich on ciabatta bread with pulled pork and diced ham, pickles and Swiss cheese with a spicy mustard. It comes with fries or fresh greens. We had fries last night so we went with the greens. Verge good sandwich, the wifey and I split it and it was plenty for us. We almost turned around having no success finding a vacant parking space--even the streets were full! With a little patience (and a couple u-turns), we found a spot right in front of the restaurant as some guests were leaving from breakfast. Jackpot! We were welcomed into Le Papagayo by a hostess and the sound of live music. We wanted to dine al fresco but our hungry tummies couldn't wait for outdoor seating and so we opted to dine indoors. No biggie, we actually were seated in a booth really close to the outdoor patio. And we could still enjoy the live music from our table. We each placed our orders and we didn't have to wait too long for them to bring the food out to us. Here's what some of us ordered: * Papagayo Dynamite - This was awesome! Baked seafood dish with a creamy sauce under a layer of toasted panko-like topping. * Medianoche (Cuban Sandwich) with a Salad - The Cuban sandwich came out nice and hot, and the flavors were really good! * Duck and Mahi Mahi Tacos - The grilled Mahi Mahi Tacos were fresh and delicious! The Duck Tacos were excellent! It looks like carnitas (shredded pork) wth crunchy pieces of skin. I would order this again! * Luxury California Burrito - I didn't get to try this (since I was on one side of the booth) but I heard this massive burrito was super delicious! * Grilled Cheese with Truffle Fries - This was also on the other side of the booth so I didn't get to try this but I did hear it was really good. First, I would highly recommend making a reservation. When we walked up at dinner time, there was a line out the door. No idea on the wait time as we had a reservation. The hostess left much to be desired. She was short with me and seemed maybe a little overwhelmed, but it always sucks to begin your experience at a restaurant with someone with a bad attitude. After being seated, Zoe was our waitress. She was super friendly and welcoming. My one complaint is we had to ask repeatedly for plates from her and a bus boy and they took over ten minutes to arrive when we already had food on the table. The food and drinks were awesome. I recently returned to Le Papagayo to celebrate a friend's birthday and it continued to be a wonderful experience. We stopped in on a Tuesday night, which features all-night happy hour. This allowed us to try several new dishes at a discounted price and everything was great. To start with, my boyfriend and I recommended getting a couple baskets of bread and pesto for the table. I could never have enough of this pesto. It's seriously the best thing that I've ever tasted and I'd be happy if I could live off of it alone. We then ordered two flatbreads, the pesto margherita and the pear and brie, which are $10 each during happy hour. While I stuck to just my pesto flatbread because fruit on a pizza is just strange to me, my boyfriend tried both but seemed to prefer mine to his. Funny how that works, huh? But even better than the pesto flatbread were the truffle fries. These were melt-in-your-mouth delicious and so flavorful that you didn't even need the somewhat strange aioli that they're served with. We honestly couldn't figure out the aioli because it looked just like mayonnaise and didn't have much flavor. It's listed as garli aioli but could have used a bit more garlic. Le Papagayo retained its position near the top of my list of favorite restaurants in San Diego. read more

I've driven past Le Papagayo for years and thought it looked inviting from the outside with it's fire towers and patio lights. Finally I got in there to try it out. After two visits I feel I'm ready to say I'm a fan. From the friendly hostess, to the very nice bartenders we had a good experience. This place is very casual and can get chilly inside with the open windows. We sat at the bar and ordered a bottle of Justin wine. My daughter had the shrimp ceviche and I had the Papagayo flatbread. We took a Harley ride to the coast and stopped here for lunch. Overall, a very good experience. The staff was friendly and service was very good. After reading Yelp reviews (thank you Yelpers!) we decided on the Spicy Macadamia Nut Calamari Strips with Sweet & Sour Chili Dipping Sauce ($11) and the Medianoche Cuban Sandwich with Roasted Pulled Pork, Ham, Swiss Cheese, Pickles & Mustard on a Ciabatta Bun ($12). My husband and I always split our meals, which makes for a just right serving for each of us. The calamari strips were meaty, tender and cooked perfectly. They were coated with the chili sauce and rested on a bed of leafy greens. The chili sauce was a little too sweet for my taste. The greens were smothered with too much dressing (note to self: be sure to ask for light on the dressing next time). The Cuban sandwich was filled with all that was described in the menu. It was good. Also served with greens, I was able to get our server to request light on the dressing, and it was perfect. Their tacos also looked good--these are on my list to try next time we visit here. The restaurant sits on the beach side of the busy highway and Amtrak tracks. Arriving on a Tuesday for an early lunch we had no problem finding parking the the small lot. There is inside and patio dining. The patio is dog friendly. We ate in the bar area that opens up to the outside. The walls are covered with art for sale, including blues musicians. The setting is beachy casual and hip. They have live music on weekends. I could see this as a fun place to dine, chill out with some cocktails, and to have some fun while listening to music. read more

We had breakfast there this morning Friday March 3. I don't know what was wrong with our waiter, Al, but he sure seemed like a sourpuss. All of our drinks arrived luke warm and yet he claimed they tea they came out of the hot water valve. Doesn't matter...they were not acceptable at $6.00+ or so each. My eggs, potatoes and toast arrived luke-warm. When I brought it to Al's immediate attention, he argued bad saying he brought it from the kitchen right away. Doesn't matter...at $17.00+ or so it wasn't acceptable and I didn't need his defensive attitude. The plates were also cold so that might be part of the problem. Other restaurants would have taken something off the bill. (I usually don't complain) He didn't. He never offered to refill my tea and I had to remind him to bring milk.
