An authentic, excellent, anglo-friendly dining experience in the latin quarter that's worth the money. I happen to be friends with the owner's son, so I can say without equivocation that almost every dish on the menu is worth trying--I would, however, stick with meat, as that is their real forte. They frequently change their menu, but things that have stayed pretty consistent are the Foie Gras aux Figues (superb), Baked Camembert (simple and delicious). The Parmentier is fantastic, and if you have a chance to try Pig Cheeks (joues de cochon) you will not leave disappointed. Top it off with a family recipe Amadeus au Chocolat, which I"ve tried for 2 years now to get from the chef, and you'll see why it's a great meal. Certainly not the best meal in town, but honest, friendly, authentic and delicious. Everyone says the food in Paris is great, but the this was the only restaurant I visited that I thought was worthy of a rave review (that includes many places we found via Yelp with 4+ star reviews). This was the best meal I had during our vacation. My boyfriend and I shared a shrimp appetizer that was fantastic. For the main course, I got the duck breast with foie gras and mashed potatoes. I have no idea what they did to those mashed potatoes but they were delicious -- and I don't like mashed potatoes. The duck and the sauce were wonderful too. My boyfriend got the chicken and mashed potatoes and was very happy with his meal, but still jealous of mine. The waiter was pleasant. The waitress/assistant waitress was very attentive and sweet. I wish we'd gone twice during our visit, but I will be returning if I ever get back to France. read more

Excellent dinner. Ambience: The sole minor complaint of this place is that while quaint it has a few too many tables packed into it which makes for a tight fit and not a very intimate setting. My wife and I have been to Paris 3 times and the meal we had here was by far the best one. The quality of the food was top-notch and the wine was excellent. We started with a bottle of Sancerre (39 euros). My wife had an amazing appetizer of beets layered with goat cheese while I had an artichoke pastry tart. Both were extremely flavorful and outstanding. My dinner of scallops was fresh and flavorful. My wife had a sea bass in a vanilla creme sauce that was "off the chain" good! My husband, mother and I came here for dinner because we were in the area and there were so many positive reviews. What a mistake. Clearly, the reviews here are from tourists who don't know any better and are willing to eat bad, overpriced food. The meal was terrible - food was not flavorful, vegetables were mushy, everything came with a side of mashed potatoes. Plus, everything was very overpriced. We had shrimp (flavorless, €16 for 3 shrimp) and scallops (€26, 4 incredibly under seasoned scallops on a pile of non-seasonal and mushy veggies). Do yourself a favor - walk 10 more minutes and eat dinner at Le Vieil Ami. It's delicious, will cost you the same (or less!) and you can get some delicious ice cream at Berthillion for dessert. read more

I can't stand Paris, and Le Petit Pontoise offered an oasis on your guard streets. Primarily, the staff was very accommodating. If the establishment is not family run, they make you feel a part of a family. The hostess and the proprietor are each attentive and welcoming. My waitress was disarming and charming. I ordered the quail. The portion is small, but the meal fulfilling. The wife had a dish of escargot. Instead of coming in a dimpled bowl, it came in a cream sauce with mushrooms. The younger son had a half chicken with mashed potatoes with gravy. So, you had daring fare, and stuff more like home cooking for the less adventurous. Seating is kinda tight. I'm from Massachusetts, but we made friendly talk with the people next to us, who were from LA. The dad had pig cheeks. He claims, "The best part of the pig." Got to get me some. read more

What an excellent way to spend our last night in Paris! A quaint, pretty little spot, with a friendly family running it! Crab Salad and Beet/Apple salad to start, with Prosciutto-Wrapped Monkfish for an entre, finished with an amazing tarte tatin. Tiny, charming, and worth the trip. I think this place gets a mix of tourists and locals (tourists at dinner, locals any other time), but as an American I would compare it to the cozy restaurants tucked away in the West Village of New York. My bro-in-law had the pigs cheeks and he was swooning for the swine. I had the lamb chops, which were awesome, but I could've eaten another helping. The smaller portion worked out because I had ordered brie as an appetizer...which was a lot of cheese, I suggest sharing. Solid and fairly priced wine list. Great staff (owner is a financial analyst by day, but has a passion for food). On a recommendation, we booked a reservation here while on our honeymoon for our last big night in Paris. I'm giving it four stars primarily because the appetizer blew out the entrees, but the short version of my review is that I recommend this place. It has a quaint feel that takes the stuffiness edge off, but while retaining a subtle elegance. The English-friendly wait-staff was very helpful for finding the best bottle of wine (still very reasonable - a less than 40 euro Cotes-du-Rhone) we enjoyed in Paris. This restaurant was near our apartment and we ate there twice in one month. The food was the best I've ever had. One time I had kidneys and the other time I had pork jowls--both were specials and they were amazing--I still dream about going back and having more. My wife had the Coquilles St. Jacques and she still raves about how good they were. The people that worked there were very hospitable and made us want to come back, which we did. However, the moment we had their escargot, our tune changed. I never had escargot before, but damn it was good! We stopped short of licking the bowl. This is probably the best food I have ever had hands down. My roommate who studied abroad in Paris for a year recommended it and it exceeded my expectations. The baked camembert was actually life changing, I could eat that cheese every day for the rest of my life. I had the shrimp appetizer for my entree and it was also delicious and lighter than a whole entree after indulging in the cheese. The rose was wonderful as well! I went to this place in 2006 and have not forgotten about it. My dad and I stumbled upon it and decided to eat dinner there, best decision ever. Not only was it the best meal I had while I was in Europe but the staff was SUPER FRIENDLY! My french is... ok ... but I was having trouble translating some of the items on the menu. One of the waitresses saw I was having a little bit of trouble and sat down with us and translated the ENTIRE menu for my dad and I!!!! I seriously cannot put enough stars for this place. before coming to paris for vacation, i have read about so many restaurants and waiters that hate non-french speaking customers so i was really nervous about dining out. came across this place while looking at pictures on yelp because being from california where foie gras is now banned, i was on a mission to eat as much foie gras as possible. as soon as we walked in, the waiter greeted us warmly and asked if we would like an english menu and if we had any questions or like any recommendations. we had the foie gras with duck ontop of mash potatoes and pig cheeks stew. the foie gras was amazinggg - seared and drizzled with balsamic vinegar - and i was surprised how big the portion of it was. the pig cheeks was super tender and i was so happy that there were some veggies in the dish. being a tourist, i cannot say "this place is the best for _____" but i was in paris for 5 days and this was definitely my favorite meal. read more

We booked our reservation the day of for 9pm with Yelp which made me happy so I didn't butcher their language while reserving a table. When we arrived the restaurant was completely full but one table was just getting up so we waited a minute before being sat. The restaurant is extremely small and the tables are close but the food is worth any inconvenience. It was by far the best restaurant we ate at while in Paris. For an appetizer we had the Ravioli Dauphine (mac n cheese) and escargot in a garlic butter sauce. Both amazing. My husband got the duck over potatoes and it was delicious. I got the salmon over vegetables...also awesome. For dessert we had the chocolate lava cake which was perfect. Our waitress was one of two and she was British so English wasn't a problem. My airbnb is across the street from this gem of a restaurant. I had dinner here my first night in Paris and it did not disappoint! The staff is incredibly nice and very accommodating. I had the Bass which was amazing! I went back a second time and decided to try the escargot in some amazing-melt-in-your-mouth sauce! And had the Chocolate molten like petite cake. While dining here a couple weeks back, my girlfriend and I made the mistake of asking the waitress what kind a particular cheese was on our plate. For some strange reason, she proceeded to pick up (with her hands!) each individual variety of cheese off our plate and tell us what it was. I do need to mention that the food was quite good. I got the fish of the day and my girlfriend got the infamous cheese plate. I know there is a certain level of intimacy in Europe that we don't share here in United States, but I do not expect the waitstaff to make it to second base with my food before I even have a chance to eat it. read more

The food was over priced by at at least a 1/3, and the wine was way over priced. 21€ for 1/4 chicken with mashed potatoes and my lamb chops (28€) were over cooked (white and no juice) and was sent back. A half an hour later it came back almost raw and only after prompting. There were no fixed price offerings, no pay for only what you drink as listed below... Perhaps it changed hands. I have been to Le Petit Pontoise several times over the years because one can ALWAYS be assured of a great meal. This is a tiny crowded bistrot with excellent and delicious choices, beautifully presented. The wine list is also wonderful, and the service is, as they say in France, "souriant"--smiling. We have fish on a most recent visit: spectacular and fresh. The addition of colorful vegetables added to the flavors and color of the dish. Meats are prepared as you like them and the duck is an excellent choice. There are a variety of tempting desserts. We had a short vacation in Paris and had our best meal here. It is a small restaurant right off the soene on the left bank. The waitress is energetic and kind and the food was delicious. I had two "entrees" (US appetizers). I had a layered beet, goat cheese (I think) and apple (I think), with a herb purée. This was really delicious and had such a subtile blend of flavors. I also ordered a rich ravioli app, that my daughter scarfed down. My husband enjoyed a perfectly cooked bass, and my son a duck breast with a cherry sauce. We'd go back! read more

I think I discovered this on Yelp, and had a lovely small meal there of the most delicious escargot in heavy cream, colored by parsley, flavored by garlic, and with paper thin slices of mushrooms. The baguettes to sop up the leftover sauce was perfect, and the Petit Chablis I ordered was exceptional with it.
