We managed to save the best for last. We had universally good food during our five days in Roma, but our dinner at Le Tavernelle was our favorite. It doesn't open until 7:30, which is a little later than we like, but "when in Rome..." As the saying goes. They have outside and inside seating, and it quickly got busy, so I would suggest a reservation. Staff are ever present and super friendly, so it's easy to track them down when the need arises. For food, we had two appetizers - a smoked salmon platter and a smoked provolone platter. Each came with a bed of lightly dressed greens. Both the salmon and the cheese were good. Sometimes, leaving food alone is the best course. For the main course, I opted for a seafood risotto. The only problem, really, is that all the shells were still on. I get that you want to cook with the shells on, but it would be less messy to remove them, especially from the rather large prawns. Having said that, the dish was probably the most flavorful dish I have had in Rome. To end, I opted for the suggested Tiramisu together with a cappuccino. The Tiramisu was awesome. As to the capuccino, I have had better just round the corner. It was certainly better than most, except here where the quality of coffee is so high. This was my first meal in Rome when I arrived and I was somewhat disappointed. The ambiance is warm and casual which is what I had been looking for, with a friendly server who spoke little English but was proficient in communicating with me in hand gestures. The seasonal grilled artichoke was simple and tasty, I love artichoke and order it whenever possible. It was smothered in a bed of warm olive oil which was earthy and reminded me of what it might feel like to have a summer dinner on an Italian farm. However. I ordered the Spaghetti Pomodoro as my main. Perhaps to many, this seems like a boring choice. It was to my waiter who was pushing me to order the popular Cacio Pepe, a Roman pasta favorite. But when I really want to test an Italian restaurant I always go for the Pomodoro. There are few places in America that have mastered the art of the Pomodoro and even in Italy I find it difficult to find a balanced, fresh, not overpowering in garlic, or herbs, sweet and tantalizing tomato sauce. To most restaurants, I would say it ends up tasting like an after-thought. But to me, this should be the sauce of Italian cooking. Just as the Béchamel is to French cuisine. And unfortunately, La Tavernelle is not there. Not even close. Perhaps a more extravagant dish may make up for their adequacies, but for a Pomodoro purist the verdict was a sweetless goodbye. read more

Visiting Rome for the first time and found this place online. I must say this was hands down was the best meal my boyfriend and I had while in Rome. We also felt that the restaurant was full of locals and felt more authentic than other places we've eaten at during our trip. We ordered the gnocchi and bucatini to start and then split the veal dish. The veal was probably one of the most flavorful dishes I've had. The prices are great. We had our dishes, bread, water, a liter of wine, tiramisu, espresso and amaretto and the bill was about €60. We arrived around 9:30 p.m. on a Saturday, so a little later than the average Italian dinner time. The place was still busy but we were able to be seated. Would recommend making a reservation if you plan to come earlier. The the wait staff was incredibly attentive and so kind. Absolutely will visit again in the future and highly recommend to anyone looking for a quality dinner. read more

We didn't but they found a table for us, but people without a reservation who came after us couldn't get a table. The only thing disappointed me was that they charged each one of us for 2€ for bread, without asking. Had to find a place for my family of 14 (5 years old up to senior citizen) to eat dinner while on vacation. The stakes were high - must be good for kids and adults, serve good Italian food, and not break the bank. This place had good reviews, so I rolled the dice... and hit the jackpot! They put us in the back room which was just fine with us. We knew we had the right place when we asked the waiter what he recommended and he instantly joked "My recommendation? Well, there's this great place down the street..." He then walked folks through the menu, and patiently did it again at the other end of the table for the folks who couldn't hear the first time. Service was great throughout, with other wait staff even jumping into our family photos. And the food! Everything was yummy and just what you'd want in Italy. Most of us had some kind of pasta and everyone said their choice had to be the best tasting. I personally had some fish and gnocchi and both were delicious. The place itself is quaint and everything is displayed beautifully. The food, however, is a great disappointment. The lasagne was the best meal we received out of the three. My partner ordered a lobster pasta dish and while the lobster was okay, the pasta itself was slightly undercooked (not al dente) and very salty. This was expressed to the waiter as we asked for our bill, and the waiter originally apologized and then disappeared for around 20-30 minutes. During this time we had our dishes cleared and were ignored. When the bill finally came out, we were surprised to see the full amount for all dishes on there even though the lobster dish wasn't consumed due to salty nature. At this point, we cut our losses and paid it because we were tired of waiting, did not want to argue, and are frankly quite used to the "scammy" nature of this region (Rome in general). I don't recommend coming here if you are wanting good food and a pleasant evening. read more

A cozy family owned restaurant near the colosseum. Food is made with fresh ingredients including fresh pasta. As someone who craves flavoring and loves garlic, I was surprised at the subtle flavors of the pasta carbonara. With that being said I still enjoyed the dish, the simple but fresh ingredients really held its own, the only thing I didn't like was that my pasta was al dente. All was great until I had to return my main dish (which I never ever do) because it was way salty (and I'm not particularly sensitive to salt) but it was way salty. When I did so, the server said, 'because it's got mussels'. Spaghetti with mussels is my favorite dish of all time; I've ordered it from various restaurants over the years. The server asked if I wanted to replace it with another dish and thanked him but declined. When I got the bill, it included the mussels dish. When I ask him why, he said, 'because you did not like it, did not mean it was not good. The other table ordered it and it was fine'. I didn't bother to argue and simply paid my bill and left. This showed extremely poor etiquette and lack of professionalism. For anyone who works in the restaurant business to imply that individual customers are not entitled to their own 'tastes' and are expected to pay for dishes that they are not satisfied with shows blatant disregard for the customer. Fantastic pasta in a cosy restaurant near the Colosseum, at reasonable prices. We tried the Lobster Pasta which was flavorful with herbs and seasoning. The tiramisu (priced at 6 Euros) was also tasty. I showed up at 730pm on a Thursday and was able to get a table for 3 without a problem. Started getting quite full around 830pm. They do take reservations so it wouldn't hurt to make a phone call or drop by earlier to reserve a table if you are able. read more

After this experience, my husband and I came back here two more nights. Between the two of us, we had the soup, fettuccine bolognese, osso bucco, the seafood sampler, two of the fresh veggie sides, and the tavernelle veal. The only dish that I didn't love was the veal tavernlle. it was really tender but sauce was underseasoned and a bit flavorless. Everything else we tried was phenomenal.
