We ordered the Chả Cá Lã Vọng (Turmeric Fish). It was prepared with basa and had a very mild, approachable taste, served with a plentiful and fresh variety of greens for wrapping. While the dish was enjoyable, I wish the Mắm Tôm (fermented shrimp paste) had been included as it appears in the menu description. When I asked for hot oil, we were served Sriracha, so I had to be more specific to get the house chili oil. Perhaps my partner's request for a fork and spoon pinned us as "safe" diners! Judging from other reviews, this might not be your first choice for Phở -- though the Súp Cua (crabmeat soup) seems to be a notable exception. From our experience, Pho Today or Pho Ha still hold the crown for the best Phở and generous portions. On a high note: the Chả Giò (spring rolls) were excellent -- better than most we've had lately. Le Viet is the ideal place for a crowd that wants a full bar, sports on TV, and authentic Vietnamese food. The dark, modern ambience and generous spacing between tables mean you can actually talk (and talk loudly) without bothering your neighbors. We started out by splitting a bao bun with crispy tofu, carrots, scallion, cucumber, and hoisin sauce. The bao was nice and fluffy, but not the best I've ever had. Based on reviews and highlights, I went for the Bun Dau Hu Cha Gio Chay, a vermicelli bowl with tofu, a veggie spring roll, peanuts, bean sprouts, and other veggies. It was a large dish with so many goodies in it! I should have added more sauce myself to enhance the flavors and give it more oompf, but overall, it was solid. They had so many other classes of dishes, including "clay pot" dishes which I was super intrigued by. I didn't expect them to have an extensive cocktail list, but I was pleased to see it! I went for a cucumber cocktail, which was refreshing and paired well with my dish. Service took a little bit of time given how seemingly non-busy it was, and getting the check took a bit too. Tried this out recently and really enjoyed it! Lychee martini was so good and very much could taste the lychee. I opted for these crunchy noodles in my dish, which wasn't something i had before but found very tasty. Cherry on top for me is always the vegetarian accommodation. When i told her i was vegetarian, she made sure to tell me she would exclude fish sauce from the dish and bring me extra soy sauce/siraccha. Nice ambience but the food is another story. I ordered pho with beef flank, my wife ordered the bun bo Huế and bố nhưng dam. Mỹ pho was not served with beef flank but cooked beef shank. The beef had a smoky smell because it was too old. The bun bo Huế noodle was too raw to chew. The bo Nhung dấm was completely raw when it was supposed to quickly soaked through hot water before serving with lemond juice. I told the host, he kept thanking me for letting him know. He said that he told the kitchen. He still charged me for the whole meal. I did not even dispute but told him that they should not serve bad food. At the end of the day, money still dictates. I feel embarrassed for the host when I told him the food was spoiled but I guess people's esteem varies!! read more

After passing this place since it opened years ago I finally decided to go and try it with my family. As other reviewers have mentioned the interior is definitely more modern and upscale looking than other Vietnamese restaurants along Washington Avenue. We went there around 2pm on a Saturday and there were only about 3 tables filled. There was only 1 worker serving the tables. He was really friendly, helpful, and efficient. My husband ordered grilled pork with broken rice, and my daughter ordered grilled pork with vermicelli (they said it was good, and pretty much the same as other Vietnamese restaurants), and I ordered claypot pork slices with caramelized onions in a traditional sauce. The clay pot dish was kind of small, and pretty salty. If it had less salt it would have tasted pretty awesome. We also ordered seasonal stir fried vegetables which was disappointing. Their seasonal veggies included bok choy, broccoli, carrots slices, mushrooms, and celery (I think). It definitely was not stir fried, rather, it was in a cornstarch sauce and the veggies were not crispy at all, and very salty. We also shared banh xeo (crispy crepe filled with veggies and shrimp), and this was delicious. If this review was based on the food we ate only I would give it a 3 star, but the server deserves a star! Great pho, great big space, and even better prices. This has become a favorite place for me and my wife. When you walk in, the space is clean, modern, and has a cool feel. The space is huge, too. I've been here so many times with just my wife, or a few friends, or even large groups (6-12 people), and have never had a problem getting seats. Sometimes, it's cool to eat at that hole-in-the-wall place and feed off the energy of all the people there. Sometimes, you just want some space. If you're ever feeling claustrophobic and would like to move and breathe and not have to yell to be heard, Le Viet has space. More than anything, we love the food. It has everything you'd expect a pho place to have. My personal favorite is the house pho. My wife's is the shrimp vermicelli. They have great spring/summer rolls. The prices are honestly what seals the deal here. You can get almost everything on the menu for about $10 or less--and it's great food. Tip: if you come for lunch on Sundays, they have a special menu where you can get most of your meals for about $6. Unbeatable. The service has always been great when we've been here--friendly, attentive, and quick. Again, this is one of our favorite spots. I've grown up eating tons of Vietnamese food, so trust me when I say that Le Viet is exactly what a modern Vietnamese restaurant should be. The food is authentic and delicious, accessible to people who might have never tasted Vietnamese food but also good enough for born and raised Vietnamese folks. I've been here with my parents, aunts, and uncles, and it's gotten all of their seals of approval. Everything here hits the mark. The vermicelli noodle bowls, rice dishes, many different soups, and other classic dishes are all spot on. The pho might not be the best in town, but with such a big menu and for the price it's quite good. The fried basa filet in sweet and sour sauce is consistently crispy and delicious, fried perfectly so it's never oily. My favorite is the deep fried tofu (dau hu rang muoi). I'm absolutely a meat guy (there's nothing better than a thick, medium rare ribeye), so when I rave about tofu you know it's the real deal. Chunks of tofu are deep fried until perfectly crispy, topped with fragrant fried onions, garlic, and peppers, and dipped in a delicious sweet chili sauce. I can feel my stomach rumbling just thinking about it. If you're looking for a reliable Vietnamese meal or to introduce someone to Vietnamese food, this is your place. The place is cleaner than most other Vietnamese restaurants I've been, prices are on par with other local places, and the service is impeccable. 4.5 stars for food, bumped up for nailing everything else too. Best $6 appetizer I've ever had. Le Viet is so far above it's competition that it's almost laughable. Every element by which I rate restaurants is a solid five stars. Let's briefly survey each, shall we? First and foremost, the food is incredible. The sliders (beef, pork, or chicken), which were offered on special for $6, are possibly one of the best bites in the city. They have every flavour, texture, and general quality one would want in top flight dishes: sweet, heat, crunch, softness, great colour, perfect portion. This is a must try. The catfish clay pot also beautifully balances the brilliant complexity of this region's cuisine. Other honourable mentions include, the lime/salt&pepper sauce, and the quail eggs. The service is outstanding. The whole staff works as a team, and everyone is as knowledgable as they are friendly. They were happy to help me pronounce the dishes correctly, so that I might do them the courtesy of ordering properly when I next return. The decor may be a half-click under 'Raw' or 'Mikado'. The interior is clean, and sleek. A clear shot of the kitchen is made visible, which always inspires confidence in my book. It's appropriately nice without being posh. The most fantastic part of the Le Viet experience, is that it's no more expensive than any of the other 2-3 star pho joints on Washington Ave. I'm not served any mystery meats...I don't have to fish tripe or gristle out of my bowl, and there are no screaming children running about al la Pho Ha. - Tangent: Your children are not cute. A big wheels does not belong in a restaurant. No one enjoys screaming while they eat. Daycare and the family business are not synonymous. And quite strong, but you definately could not tell until it kinda hits you half way inbetween. Beef salad - we could have done chicken, but I wasn't some of that red stuff...lol. I think it was drowned in waaaay too much dressing/sauce, so it really overpowered the dish and I couldn't taste the meat or the lettuce. Next time, I would ask for it on the side. Le Viet has a very upscale feel without upscale prices. The pho here is okay, I only had the appetizer size pho and the broth was very bland. Their bun bo hue is pretty spicy and the broth is very thick. The flavor isn't bad though and but I'm not sure if I would order that again. The best things on their menu is the banh mi. Great flavor in the pork and it's packed with the perfect ratio of vegetables to pork to bread. Every bite of the sandwich is delicious. The service here can be a little slow sometimes. There's no onsite parking so you'll have to get lucky on the street. If you're people who want a nice clean restaurant for Vietnamese food, this is a good spot to take them. The service here was excellent, they were attentive, friendly and helpful. We had several appetizers, the fried Spring rolls, Crispy crepe filled with pork, shrimp, bean sprouts, and green onion, La Viet sliders and the Pop's Chicken wings. The standouts here were Chicken Wings and Spring Rolls. Those two appetizers had a lot of great flavors and were just delicious. For the main course we had Chef signature sautéed cellophane noodles and seasonal vegetable, served with your choice of Seafood, Beef, Chicken or Tofu and the Braised Basa filets with onions caramelized in traditional sauce Clay Pot. Both dishes were good but not as outstanding as the two appetizers mentioned above. For dessert we had Vanilla ice cream with fried banana, topped with coconut cream, toasted coconut, and peanuts. This was very good and not too sweet or heavy. We will be back to La Viet. The quality, atmosphere and food make this a restaurant worth visiting. Years ago Philly had far more places like this but changed the market to accommodate those who order in an app on their phones. what i found to be lovely was the open atmosphere, the vast menu and the accommodation.
