The BBQ platter is excellent and easily a meal on its own, with a great mix of grilled meats and variety. The pho stands out for being well balanced and tasting very natural, without that heavy, overly processed broth flavor you sometimes get from places that rely too much on bouillon. The fried spring rolls are a favorite at home, especially for my wife and son. The grilled pork bun is also very good with a solid portion size and well-seasoned pork. I was surprised to see most of the tables full. I needed help with the menu so was guided through and each was described to me. We've been coming to both of their locations for over a decade. This was probably the first time we felt the didn't hit the mark. I didn't really like my seafood soup. It tasted so heavily of kimchi, the seafood was overcooked - both the squid and the shrimp. The shrimp curry was okay , but standard nothing too special for a pretty hefty price. You must order the crispy pork spring rolls! I love that they come with lettuce, cucumbers, mint and pickled carrots. 12/10!!! I tried the shrimp pad Thai for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. I give it a 9/10. It was full of flavor and had bites of tofu which I loved. I've been a fan of Vietnam Restaurant ever since I ordered their takeout food last year. Last weekend, I finally got to try their dishes in person. Taste-wise, I must say that everything we ordered was on point: from the house special vermicelli bowl to the bbq platter. Service here is quick and efficient. Our food arrived only about 5-10 minutes after we ordered. I love that they provided us with the nifty rice paper holder that doubles as a hot water bowl on the side. The bbq platter is perfect for a group of 4-5 people as the portion of each side dish is generous. I also love their Vietnamese coffee, but I will have to stay away from it when I need to get a good night sleep as it kept me awake almost all night despite drinking it at lunch time. As for ambience, this place is pretty cozy and intimate. Since this place is in Chinatown, I wouldn't recommend driving to here as parking could be difficult albeit possible to find with enough patience. read more

I had a nice meal at Vietnam. The shrimp summer rolls were very good and the accompanying peanut sauce went perfectly with them. The vermicelli bowl I opted for was the chef's special which had pretty much everything on top. The fried spring rolls were delicious, the meatballs were good, the chicken was not great, it was tough and not that flavorful. The pork was delicious, but one of the pieces was full of gristle and not edible. The noodles themselves were good, but could've been a little more robust, and the whole thing would've been better with crushed peanuts on top. All in all it was a good meal, but had some misses, I would consider giving it another shot sometime. read more

I'm ashamed to admit that i've lived around the block from this restaurant for almost a year and I only just made my first visit. Walking in, I was really taken aback by the style of the interior because it was so unique and different from what I initially anticipated. I really liked the warm vibes and think it would be a very nice place to get together with friends but also a nice place to go for a quick bite to eat. We got the caramelized shrimp, beef pho, and crispy egg noodles. And when I tell you the meat was SO TENDER like when people say melt in your mouth and fall off the bone, THIS IS WHAT THEY MEAN. Pho shop was busy on a Friday evening. Ate the vegetarian pho and the vegetarian spring rolls. The pho was tasty and not salty. The vegetables were very fresh and crispy (aka not overcooked in the broth). I ordered some extra boiled tofu and they brought it fresh without any issue or argument. This place was recommended by a friend who's local in the area so I decided to try it on my last day in Philly. Thankfully I went on a right day as the restaurant is closed on Mondays. Ordered a whole bunch of food, was happy to see Vietnamese ice coffee on the menu so ordered that too. I went at an odd time (3:45pm) for a late lunch so I had the place basically all to myself. The food was pretty good, I really enjoyed my vermicelli bowl with mixed proteins. The place is nice and clean, including the toilets. This review is really more like 3.5 but I wanted to be realistic if you're a Vietnamese person and being really excited that this is a James Beard winner. The good: the crispy egg rolls are pretty amazing. Since it is wrapped in the rice paper and not the traditional egg roll wrapped, it's light and the crispy bubbles are a delight. The service is incredible. I know they received a huge influx due to the James Beard hype and they handled it with grace and good organization. The questionable: While I think the broth has the right notes and such, I was trying think why it tasted so light. It's not exactly a Northern style pho so I realized that the broth must have been a little diluted in some way. It's not as beefy as one would hope for a pho. The bun bo hue was spicy (which very nice) but it lacked the meaty (pork) broth undertone too. I think this is where I'd take my corporate boss, but not where I'd take my Vietnamese family. This place is fancier and more Westernized than your typical Vietnamese restaurant. With the decor and the French music, it feels more like a French restaurant. I was excited to order banh cuon for an appetizer because theirs is made with chicken while banh cuon usually made with pork, which I don't eat, and so I had not had it in years and was craving it. For my entree, I ordered catfish in clay pot which is another dish I had not had in years. The fish was served skinned and deboned when I am used it having it with skin on and with bones in and that is totally fine. The sauce was also not as thick as I am used to. The shrimp inside was on the thin side but the peanut sauce dip was cool. I had the infamous chicken pho with "beef broth". For me, the beef broth with the chicken is so tasty! I enjoyed the chicken being thinly sliced. The broth was very delicious from Vietnam Restaurant! Mmmm! I appreciate when I order takeout for pho -- it comes in an actual to-go bowl. I ordered a couple of items for delivery to see if Vietnam was as good as I've heard. I ordered pork spring rolls and fried shrimp. The spring rolls came sliced, which I like, and were some of the most delicious spring rolls I've tasted. And with so much filling they fill you up more than you would think. The shrimp were right up there with the best at any seafood restaurant. They were large juicy shrimp, perfectly fried with a sauce that complimented it even better than the usual cocktail sauce. My only gripe is that there is a lot of extra batter fried at the top of the shrimp. So that first bite from the top didn't have any shrimp on half of them! An annoying tease... I can see that Vietnam is as good as I've heard and I'm looking forward to trying more food in the actual restaurant once indoor dining is allowed. The potential is certainly there for a 5 star restaurant. read more

It has been years since I visited the Vietnam Restaurant. This used be our go to place in Chinatown many, many moons ago. We used to go specifically for the spring rolls and they were the best. I don't think I had been to the Vietnam for over 15 years. My two bother in laws and myself decided to relive the past and I met them on 11th street after a Phillies game. The place is still very nice and has an upscale Indochine colonial look going on with dark woods. What we ordered: CRISPY PORK SPRING ROLLS CHA GIO - Ground pork, onions, mushrooms, lettuce, pickled dain, mint leaves, chili vinegar dipping sauce. These were as good as I remember and so good we ordered two orders. CRISPY CREPES BANH XEO - Pan-seared rice flour, shrimp, pork, sweet onions, bean sprouts, chili vinegar dipping sauce. This is one of my favorite dishes and Vietnam's was one of the better Banh Xeo's I have tried. The shrimp was fresh and flavorful and the crepe cooked just right. SALT/PEPPER CHICKEN GA RANG MUOI TIEU - Fried strip of chicken breast tossed in stir-fried bell peppers, onions, garlic, chili, spicy salt/pepper (Spicy) - We went with this dish as they were out of the duck. Extremely disappointed in Vietnam tonight. Made the mistake of ordering Chicken Broken Rice, with bok choy, along with my husband's order for delivery. The restaurant emailed to say they were substituting a pork dish, WITHOUT calling or asking me!! I DON'T EAT PORK!! When I called the restaurant, the delivery person already left, and I was met with the unfair attitude from an unprofessional staff member, "I can't do anything about it". Actually, yes, you could have, since it was your restaurant's decision to make the substitution without asking!! At least offer credit, or something else to this customer who had been loyal to Vietnam for about 20 years!! Communication is key, and you just lost a customer due to your lack of communication and bad attitude. read more

Having not a lot of Vietnamese places from where I'm from, we decided to scratch that itch here. You come here and first thing you notice is that the restaurant next door is called Vietnam palace, and you're wondering if you should choose that since it sounds more epic. Ended up getting a chicken clay pot dish, a brisket pho, bok choy, and shrimp rolls. I'd say that the traditional dishes scratched that itch. It reminded me how there's so many noodles and little beef and how strong and salty the broth could be. Reminded me how shrimp rolls themselves don't have too much flavor, and it needs heavy support from the salty sauce. The bok choy was quickly devoured, probably because my diet the previous day was some guilty McDonald's and even guiltier cheesesteak. Had a nice flavoring with it (garlic) and was a lil salty.
