Definitely a place to stop and ride a shorter train and see the mountains. Not much in the town of Leadville as far as restaurants and such but enjoyable scenic train route. We were able to see some local wildlife while on the train as well. The conductor was super friendly. If sitting in an outside a car, then it is hard to hear at times when the conductor is giving you some fun local facts. It took about 2 1/2 hours or so. Perfect for an afternoon activity. read more

We went during peak fall colors and it was so magical! The conductor provides a great overview of the history of the railroad and this part of Colorado. I loved seeing all of the good doggos hanging out with their people. For the most part, they were all well behaved. The best seating does fill up quickly so wish we had gotten there a bit earlier. They do sell snacks aboard but they're just so so. The pretzel I got was half heartedly warmed up. I liked the short break in the middle where you can get off the train and take pictures or stretch your legs at the water tower. Bathrooms on board are meh, so try to use the restroom beforehand at the station. Once you get off the train everyone rushes to the bathroom so you want to try to get off faster to avoid a long line. The whole experience felt a little long to my toddler, but I did see some kids napping in their seats. Definitely worth coming out during peak fall season! read more

I would not recommend bringing dogs or small children on this train until stronger safety policies are in place and enforced. The views were beautiful but our experience was ruined before the train even left the station. After boarding the train and walking to our seats another dog attacked mine. We immediately reported it to staff but the aggressive dog was still allowed to stay on board. We had traveled a long way specifically for this experience and it was extremely disappointing to see staff fail to handle the situation. read more

We decided to randomly purchase the tickets to board the train and don't regret it! Incredible experience, the highlight of our visit to the mountains. We enjoyed hot chocolate as the train chugged along. heated cars, so we were comfortable and relaxed. restrooms were clean and the staff were helpful. We enjoyed hearing the employee talk about the area and the stories of the past. Beautiful views. I recommend!! Especially if you don't feel like skiing or riding the gondola to soak up the views. My favorite train ride so far! The seats were so comfy and the train was clean for a train. They also have bathrooms (I didn't go to them) the views were incredible and on the way back they let us get out and check out the water tower area which was super nice and a great feature. Cute little train and fun ride! I only gave it a four because it's not quite as nice or as good of views as the surrounding trains, I'll probably wouldn't pay the over $50 to do it again. But we are glad we did it once. Cute little shop with souvenirs, loading the train was very easy. The domestic beer was definitely priced too high at $8 per can. I was going to buy a koozie, it was just a plain yellow Cousy that looked old and dirty and when the guy rang it up, it was $10! So i put it back. The guy checking out I don't feel like really knew what he was doing, each time we went to check out, It was a different price, lol! The train ride was about two hours long. On the way up there is a guy on a microphone telling you about all the history and that was really cool. Once you get to the top, you can get off for 5 to 10 minutes and walk around! Definitely a must if you are visiting Breckenridge CO. This ride was amazing! Beautiful views. Great history information shared over loud speaker during trip as well. Food and drinks available for purchase onboard but you can also bring your own snacks. When you board choose a seat on the side farthest from the train depot/ticket booth for the best views. Great for all ages. They have a professional photographer who goes through the train and takes pictures of each group traveling together that you can buy at the end of the trip (5x7 prints) that came out great! read more

Definitely a great choice when visiting the area, a good way to take in and learn about the area. The guide was informative, engaging, and easy to hear on the speaker system. The scenery is great, though most of the ride essentially follows along 1000 ft above CO-91. There's a 10-minute stop at the turnaround point to stretch your legs, take a quick tour through the engine, and see a historic caboose. While this is a historic rail line, the engine used is diesel, not steam. The cars are a variety of indoor, open-air covered, and entirely open options, with seating arranged for ideal scenic viewing (that is, it's not like normal train seating where one person gets the window seat and the other aisle, but rather seating runs parallel to the side of the cars). On our weekday trip, there was plenty of space to move around and try multiple options / sides; I imagine busy weekends don't have that freedom. Cost is in line with other Colorado historic trains. read more

Just Wow. We came to Leadville to ride the train and hopefully see some fall colors. The railroad did not disappoint. The green firs and pines, the green to vivid yellow aspens, the snow covered peaks and the bright blue sky were all amazing. The conductor kept up a steady narrative on the way up the mountain. Lots of interesting info and tidbits of lore. They have both enclosed and open seating and it is all awesome. One tip sit on the side of the train that faces the town of Leadville. They call it the downhill side. Way better views on that side. If your in Leadville do not miss the railroad. read more

We booked a fir table (table for 2) for our anniversary and we are glad we did. It was raining when we left and snowing most of the ride. The fall color were great and the snow added to the ambiance. We had table service, which was great with the wet and slick cars to walk through. Better lighting would be appreciated for the night rodes when you are getting off the train, but they can't control the weather. We certainly enjoyed the trip. read more

Put the lounge cars for which people pay extra in the front of the train. They are currently placed in the car behind the gross dirty toilets. The smell wafted back. It was gross. Bathrooms in the station and on the train were filthy. The girls at the front desk didn't want to be there and had answers for nothing. The only good part of this trip was Cricket. We had a wonderful time on the Leadville Train! I heard that the "downhill side" of the train has the best view, and my was it beautiful. However, I was excited to find that the "uphill side" this time of year (late august) is just as exciting because MUSHROOM SIGHTSEEING! Don't be hesitant to board the train between wildflower and the color-changing fall season as the views of the Arkansas River Valley are stunning year round. Our conductor was informative and friendly as was the entire staff. There are snacks and alcohol on board as well as a cute souvenir shop. The open air car was the way to go for us, but you always have the option to move between the covered and open cars. There is an option to pay extra for what looked like a dining car but unless the weather is really bad, I think the complete enclosure of it would almost inhibit the experience. A great excuse to visit the town! read more

It is an up and back down the mountain route (same track), but my family and I thought this was well worth the time and effort. A lot of history with the railroad for which the conductor was very informative, and the scenery is BEAUTIFUL. We reserved booth seating (additional fees apply) in one of the enclosed cars since they are heated I didn't know how cool it would be at the higher elevations. It was comfy with a big (residential style) window we could open to take pics and allow fresh air in. The train has a cafe car and the RR even offers service to bring food and drinks to your table (not sure if that was part of the enclosed car fee or if everyone was offered that service?). Prices were reasonable too. The drive to Leadville is beautiful, we came from Avon. Also, there are a number of decent places to eat in Leadville. We ate lunch at the Silver Llama (highly recommend, will review on their page). read more

As Fall enters Colorado, this train ride was the perfect way to welcome in the season! It was still warm and we got to enjoy the last of the summer warmth while taking in the slowly spreading fall colors. The aspens were really breathtaking. The train is nothing special but it is the staff and the Colorado mountain ambiance that make this an unforgettable experience. There are covered and open seating. I walked through the concession area but did not buy anything. It appeared to be fully stocked. Remember to sit on the side away from the depot when leaving for the best view. As the train meanders up the mountain at a leisurely 10mph, you have plenty opportunities for pictures and videos. Halfway through you get more photo ops at the Leadville water tank. The staff are friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. At $54 pp the price is a little steep. All in all, this was a fun little day trip. read more

I suppose the husband and I can have a great time anywhere, anytime. Our kiddos got a little antsy and restless towards the end, but they are toddlers. Regardless, it was a great first (real - not a kiddie) train ride for the both of them. The scenery from the Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad "gets repetitive after about an hour," but I still love it. Nature is humbling. During September, you might need a jacket for the 2 1/2 hour roundtrip ride. We brought breakfast burritos to eat on the way up. The only thing you can't bring is alcohol, but I think beer and wine can be purchased along with other snacks. My husband's service dog rode along with us. She handled it fine. Just sign a waiver and you can bring your canine anywhere on the train. No assigned seating. You're free to get up and move around as the diesel engine will be chugging at a slow pace. The restrooms aboard were mostly clean. Our oldest daughter appreciated them. If you purchased tickets online, check in with the ticket office for tangible ones. We had a marvelous young conductor who actually came around to punch them. Kids like that kind of stuff. I came to Vail to see my best friend from 2nd grade and she got us tickets for the Lounge Car which was great! The service was great and our guide was quite funny and informative. Although sometimes I had a hard time understanding with all the noice the train makes. The views were spectacular and it made for a very special day. My wife and I had the pleasure of taking this train ride mid-September when the railroad was offering their fall special. The train went up the mountain farther than usual to give us views of the spectacular aspens as their leaves turned golden and orange. The weather was perfect and the views of the mountains, valleys, and fall leaves was amazing. The conductor was also the tour guide and entertained us with stories regarding local lore and the history of the train and the mines it serviced. Fabulous! Brought my 89 year-old mother out to visit her grandson and girlfriend. This was a perfect way for her to see beauty of the area without strenuous activity. Everyone associated with the train was extremely helpful and courteous. There are nice restrooms at the depot as well as restrooms on the train itself. There is also a nice gift shop at the depot. We brought a picnic lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. Highly recommend! read more

We took the trip today, and LOVED it. The winter scenery is so beautiful. The conductor Ben was very personable and interesting, and made the trip even better. He was a wealth of knowledge about history and nature. To get to see the mountain off the path/road, out in the uninhabited areas was great. All of the staff were very welcoming, from the check in, food service on the train, to the conductor. Food service offered more options than we expected. We would go again without hesitation to see the other seasons. I'm so glad this piece of Leadville history still exists as a family business. Honestly everything was perfect. It's a wonderful piece of Colorado history and scenery. We thoroughly enjoyed the guide and her knowledge of local history for that matter. And yet, for what we paid ($35 per person) is it really worth it with barely any snow on the mountains and the trees hardly turning? Probably not. We wished the train had been in much better condition and making a trip around the mountain (like it apparently used to do) rather than just reversing and going the same track the second half of the 2.5 hour journey. When we left it was announced that the train would be making a rest stop in a national forest. That spot turned out to be a 47,000 gallon or so watertank and nowhere to walk or enjoy the scenery - which is pretty much the same anywhere along the track by the way. Too bad also that the train stops running for the season just when nature gets interesting. read more

This is a great activity to get beautiful photos of the area and learn a bunch of facts about the town & the surrounding mountains! I gave this 4 starts only because I think it's about an hour too long. It lasted almost 3 hours. There's tons of seating, inside & outside of the train. You can walk freely though the train as well. Which helps- because after an hour of sitting & looking at the views, you can get a little antsy. They have a small shop inside the train where you can purchase snacks, drinks & souvenirs.
