While on a western states road trip we spent a couple of nights in Boulder. Our first night we tried a vegan chain restaurant, which was adequate but nothing too special. On our second day, after checking Yelp, we ventured over to Leaf. Leaf was conveniently located just off Pearl Street. The restaurant was bright and open with large windows and comfortable seating. We were greeted by a friendly young lady and chose a table by the window. We reviewed the menu and found several tasty vegan offerings. Our server, Maya, was incredibly professional, friendly and helpful. My husband ordered a Colorado IPA. I asked about iced tea. Maya explained the numerous options available, including an iced tea and pineapple juice combo I couldn't resist. It was a fun and tasty iced tea variation. Maya described the two vegan soups for the day, aji yellow pepper and cauliflower truffle, making both sound all too tempting. My husband ordered the vegan crab cake sandwich with the aji yellow pepper soup. I ordered the vegan mushroom burger with the cauliflower truffle soup. The combo potato fries and sweet potato fries sounded yummy too, so we ordered them as a side. Wow! Words almost fail me! The aji yellow pepper soup was flavorful, spicy and intense. The cauliflower truffle soup was rich, creamy and subtle. The mushroom burger was a bit messy, but incredibly tasty! The bun was roasted, the patty was rich with umami flavors, with spicy sweet condiments. The crab cake sandwich was likely the best we've ever tasted! The brioche bun was toasted, the crab cake patty had a delicate texture and wonderful flavor, and the condiments nicely complimented the crab cake flavor. We were glad we ordered the mixed french fry combo, finding the potato fries, the sweet potato fries and the house ketchup all super tasty! We devoured everything, savoring every single taste! Maya checked on us often and was one of the best servers we've ever experienced! Maya was attentive, friendly and helpful without ever crowding us. After dinner we were quite full, but Maya offered us the dessert menu to explore for fun. Good choice on her part, since we couldn't resist ordering a slice of vegan carrot cake to go! We had a wonderful experience at Leaf and wish we could eat here all the time! Fantastic food and excellent service, what more could we ever want! I ordered the crab cake sandwich and a soup. Both were really yummy and I devoured them in about 4 minutes flat. The food was very salty and I'm prepping for the bloat. I love the ambience of this place and stopped in after driving by and seeing that it was vegetarian. I ordered the house white (Sauvignon Blanc) and the Jamaican Jerk Tempeh. I sat at the bar which was fine and loved that the doors opened to let in all the evening sunshine. The Jamaican Jerk had a delightful apple topping and coconut sauce around it, but the rice/Tempeh itself was entirely flavorless (despite other excellent recommendations on Yelp). There's so much to do with it!!! I did not finish the meal since it tasted like nothing once the topping was gone. I was disappointed with this dish but would be interested in coming back to try something else, simply because the place is in a great location and I love vegetarian options. Ultimately though, I will not be ordering the Jamaican Jerk Tempeh again and am hesitant to choose anything outside of the salads because my expectations with flavor are pretty low. I LOVE LEAF. Albeit a bit expensive, the food is always good, and if you get an appetizer and an entree you leave feeling full without feeling overly stuffed. Happy hour deals are pretty good, and their cocktails were delicious - not too sweet, not overly strong. My boyfriend and I loved the cauliflower tacos, and discovered that you could order 10 of them for $25 by getting the family size. Great deal, right? Well theres a reason the tacos are an appetizer, not a meal. The spice is perfect for stimulating your appetite, but OH BOY eating more than one put my mouth on actual fire. The tacos have such a great flavor, though, so we continued to eat through the 10 while simultaneously regretting every decision we've ever made. Would I do it again? Probably. Moral of the story: the tacos are great. Don't get 10 of them. read more

Vegan review: Came for brunch with non-vegetarian family and everyone was very happy with our visit. I had the veganized seitan reuben with side of fries and it was phenomenal - all of the stars. So. Dang. Good. The table started with the chocolate drop donuts and while the sauce was delicious, the actual donut was a bit lackluster - I would skip these and try another starter if I return. I had a glass of white wine that I loved but was so marked up it was a bit ridiculous. We were seated right away at the last table available and given water but that is where the prompt service ended. Service throughout the entire meal was exceedingly slow, albeit friendly and helpful. There seemed to be only 1 waiter for the entire restaurant!? Our meals took for-ev-er and the waiter finally came by to tell us there was a "mix up in the kitchen" but did not offer to comp anything or even bring out a complimentary appetizer or dessert which most other restaurants I frequent do when they starve you to half to death because of their own mess up. Hopefully the slow service we experienced was not indicative of their norm. Overall, the high star rating given the problems with service is a reflection of the food reuben being such a stunner. read more

It's got a more casual vibe than Frasca; however, the chef has gone out of her way to prepare beautiful food that is less straight forward than one would expect. So my experience at Leaf was a bit storied. The place was PACKED full and the guy who impressed me most was the bartender. This dude was the host, the only bartender, delivering the drinks as well, busing tables occasionally, opening the windows (European dining style), and just kind of checking on things here and there. This guy was wearing so many hats and rocking all of them. And this is not to say that the rest of the staff was falling down on the job, this guy was just the superman of restaurant staff. The menu isn't that large but what is on it are fresh and creative vegetarian/vegan restaurants from numerous different cuisines. So if you don't mind a small selection (and by small I still mean like 10 entrees) but wan't some quality food in beautiful downtown Boulder, this is a place to hit up (especially if sitting on the patio or next to the open window-walls). And the staff will work their asses off to ensure you have a good dining experience. read more

Went here for a business meeting and started with the matcha lemonade and the avocado tartare. Two really great items on the menu. Great flavor combinations and tastes fantastic. Endive is used as the scoops for the tartare and makes the dish work. For lunch I had the mushroom burger and added vegan cheese. Also nice. A little messy, but also the sign of a tasty patty. Took a non-vegan friend who had the pasta and said it was good too. Ambience is okay and the cafe is not marked well if you are not familiar with the area. Give it a try! My wife and I eat mostly vegetarian and vegan food. The Leaf is a small trendy restaurant that serves vegetarian and vegan food. The menu is simple but delicious. They serve coffee, tea and wines. Their vegan desserts are fantastic. During the week they have a happy hour which allows you to try some of the menu items in an appetizer portion for just a few dollars. It lasts until 6pm. The samosa cake was ok - kinda spicy and not that interesting- and the cauliflower taco was spicy but different. Got two crab cake sliders because it was so delicious. Decided to try a new place I've seen but never visited. Lunch was quiet with 3 tables but the 2 wait staff seemed challenged to keep up. As guests keep coming in, staff had a hard time keeping up. Both seemed very nice but why is it that some younger folks find it more comfortable to NOT make eye contact? Customers slowly trickled in with slow response as they waited to be greeted with 'sit where ever you want'. On to the food, very good! Even for a non vegan, a filling tasty meal! Our family chose Leaf as we were heading toward Boulder on Memorial Day as we used Yelp to check their menu and it sounded as if they had plenty that we, a family of vegetarians, could eat. We're glad we did; the service was good, the restaurant itself was beautiful, and the food was very good! I had the Huevos Rancheros, and it was prepared perfectly and was very tasty. I'd have rather had flour tortillas than corn tortillas, but it was still very enjoyable, and the guacamole was freshly prepared and delicious. The wife had the Portabello Mushroom burger, which she enjoyed (as did I with the small bite I had) and the son had the Egg/Vegan sausage croissant. He remarked a couple of times on how good it was. The wife and son had the mushroom and tomtato/spinach soup, respectively. I tried both and they were both very good! We are very likely to return to Leaf for future visits to Boulder - it's so nice to find a restaurant that sources their food locally and prepares it so well and caters to us veggies! read more

I came here for dinner after finding this restaurant featured in an article online. I didn't have any upfront expectations, expect to have a tasty vegan, wholesome and healthy dinner. I was disappointed with my overall experience. When I arrived the place was empty, only one table was taken outside with two people. I asked for a table outside and I was told to wait as they needed to check if the table was clean. Shortly after I was taken to my table. I asked if the restrooms were open. I was told that they were but I couldn't go there as they needed to be cleaned. I mentioned that all I needed was to wash my hands. They still said no and offered me a hand sanitizer spray. I declined and decided to wait till I could wash my hands before dinner after a whole day hiking in the Rocky Mountain National Park. I ordered the carrot risotto and a cup of butternut squash soup. It took forever to get the risotto out. The waitress came twice to apologize and then brought me some bread. The risotto was uninspiring to say the least. It came with just two small pieces the size of a pinky finger of the advertised "royal trumpet mushrooms". So essentially I paid $17 for a dish that was 90% white rice, 2 pieces of mushroom, 2 cherry tomatoes and half an asparagus. It didn't taste like mushrooms at all. The butternut squash soup was not great either, tasted salty. I wouldn't go back. read more

One of my favorite places to eat! I live about 70 minutes or so from Leaf in Boulder, and I will make the drive (when I have the time that is) just to have a good lunch! As a vegan, this place is like heaven for me! The restaurant itself is a nice little place right off Pearl Street (a popular, high traffic area for shopping) and is small, but well decorated, quiet, classy and very friendly. But most important, the food is delicious. I've had about 5 different dishes off the menu, including the Vegan Alfredo, Vegan French Toast, General Tso's Seitan, Huevos Rancheros and BBQ Tempeh. I've also tried numerous desserts and appetizers. I've yet to have something I truly didn't like, even though the Raw Ravioli (appetizer) took some getting used to. My favorite dishes are the General Tso's Seitan & Vegan Alfredo. The Alfredo is not too rich or creamy, and is incredibly tasty. It's the perfect amount to fill you up without your stomach hurting from overeating afterwards! The Leaf is a classy, relaxing little place with an attentive weight staff who are great with answering questions and making any dish the way you like. All the items on the menu are marked for vegans, which is very helpful, but many items that are not can easily be made vegan at your request. If you're just trying to eat healthier, limit or get rid of the meat in your diet, or maybe you are an all out vegetarian or vegan, like me, you should find something to like at Leaf. The best dining experience I have had in Colorado. The entire menu is vegetarian, with the majority of dishes being vegan. My friend and I wandered in just before 5pm after a long day of travel, and were greeted by a very friendly waitress who informed us it was currently happy hour. The menu included small plates all priced $2.50 to $8, as well as a variety of half priced beers, wines, and spirits. We ordered everything on the menu that was vegan, and were completely blown away by each dish. Memorable highlights of our happy hour binge were: -Harissa tofu -Sushi salad -Buffalo cauliflower tacos -'Crab' slider I also tried three of their beers (only $3.50 per pint!) and a cocktail that contained amaretto and almond milk, which was delicious. Prices here are extremely reasonable, especially considering the high quality of ingredients and beautiful presentation. Service was lovely and very knowledgeable of the menu. Ambience was really nice! Service was great! I ordered the risotto and forgot to say vegan. Whoops! It came with feta and they fixed it right away. My husband got the Middle East bowl and that was pretty flavorful, but it had a lot going on with the oranges, pickled beets, and cranberries. In general we liked it better than the risotto. The risotto really didn't have much for flavor. We got the latke appetizer and I'd say it was pretty good, but I think the latkes were a little too crispy (personal preference) also the toppings were really lacking. They should put more apples and vegan sour cream on top. The sort of gave you an apple and a couple drops of sour cream per latke. I'd go back for sure. But I'd try a new menu item next time.
