The fall salad with butternut squash and slivered almonds
    Sara M.

I had high hopes after researching this place online and on Yelp for both of their locations, with pictures. Very little of what we were served tonight lived up to those expectations. It's was quite sad considering the amount we spent. The portions on all but the delicious fall salad were much smaller than the appeared in pix and descriptions. For starters, the happy hour house wines which were only marginally tasty have an asterisk on their online menu stating that the wine glasses are elegant and oversized. The amount of sips I took in no way added up to the supposed 5oz pour. I have to measure fluids medically and I know well how 5oz swallows. This was about 3.5. We ordered some of happy hour plates that had been advertised on Downtown Boulder as $9 plates. There was only one on the menu. The rest of the tiny number of items were at $11 which is still a good value if offered. There were only 4 offers on starters and one "sweet" but more about the sweet later. We ended up paying full price for the rest of our starters. The first picture I found online of the arancini appeared to be baked with the mushroom risotto grains visible. What showed up on our plate were small arancini balls heavily coated in breadcrumbs and heavily fried. Not unusual and why I rarely order. So nothing special but for the tasty but tiny duck center. The Rösti was also not as pictured or described and covered with crumb or batter darkly fried onion tidbits , not sprinkled with fresh grated parm as in the pictures . We found no lingonberry berries or jam in it either but the potato base was tasty. We ordered the autumn salad and it was great. A good sized bowl of fresh greens with lots of the promised ingredients, but at full price, not happy hour. The happy hour sweet was the pictured and heralded apple strudel paired with a cappuccino . We ordered so my husband could have the cappuccino and we could share the strudel. The cappuccino came immediately and eventually we had to ask for the strudel as the drink was mostly done and cold. Someone brought the tiny bit out on a plate with more whipped cream than strudel with excuse that they did not realize we wanted them together ( they were described as a pairing) and they needed to "bake" the strudel (was it frozen or refrigerated). We each had a bite of the apple filling with a simple cover of pastry, hardly a strudel which involves " layers" of pastry but it clearly was handmade and it tasted nice. My husband ate the cream as I can't. During the visit, the nice server we started with went on break and her substitute was not much interested. The place was nearly empty on a Saturday night at happy hour with a jam packed Pearl St Mall further west. Sadly they are next door to a fading and empty eatery. I doubt they can survive. The turnover in this space has been extremely high. I was hoping for more with such a unique menu for Pearl. If you go, choose wisely, note that some staff are unaware of the advertised time of the happy hour and had to go check before serving us another item. And also know that the billing tablet is preloaded with 23% tip as standard "center" option not the customary 20% or 18% as most other places on Pearl. We are not likely to go back given these issues so plan ahead with the menu and watch the clock. As others have mentioned, the decor and music were fine. No pix of the dessert because I was distracted by then. After overnight reconsideration I am rounding my admittedly 2.5 down rather than up as before. There is so much more value in taste and service elsewhere on Pearl. I have had plenty of good European food and plenty of good service in restaurants in downtown Boulder for decades. This wasn't it. It was telling that only 5 tables occupied on a holiday weekend as we walked past many full places on the way here. I will not return .

Beautiful space, friendly service, delicious food and amazing wine program. All the food was excellent; Mushroom & Duck Arancini, Spätzle, Tomato Soup, Scallops over Mushroom Risotto, Duck, and a unique and amazing Gnocchi dessert. The sommelier recommended a beautiful bottle of Murrieta Rioja which was a great pairing. Highly recommend!

    Wild mushroom ravioli

My boyfriend took me here for our anniversary and it was lovely. We are both vegetarian and found there to be sufficient options. We got the rösti and bread for appetizers, two mocktails, the wild mushroom ravioli, and fettuccini with roasted root ragú. All very tasty and reasonably priced for how unique the flavors are and how nice the presentation is. Good jazz music playing and our server was very kind and attentive. It was relatively empty when we went at 6 pm for our reservation. I think the restaurant needs to market itself more because I'm sure it could become more popular for how tasty it is. Hope to see it become more lively soon!

    Branzino

First time at this new restaurant. The ratatouille and beet salad were delicious and I would definitely order them each again. The jaegerschnitzel was good, and as far as I know the only place in Boulder where you can find it. I hope they will continue to work on this one as I've had better. My partner got the branzino and although it was tasty, it arrived not as hot as it should've been and the portion was rather small, so again, some attention would be welcome here. The apple struedel dessert was delicious. No ice cream for the ala mode though, which I would've enjoyed. Also, we would've preferred if all of the dishes that were gluten-free were labeled as such since both of ratatouille and Branzino are gluten-free, but were not indicated on the menu and it's nice to know those things upfront. All in all a good experience and we will definitely be back.

Stopped here for happy hour, place was very quiet, but the bartender came over immediately. Amazing food, and great drinks. Went with the arancini which was some of the best I've ever had - so flavorful, cooked perfectly. The server/bartender seemed rather distracted as someone else pointed out, that was the only criticism I have from my visit. I want to come back to try more of the menu, and give their service another shot.

My husband and I were only in Boulder for a few days but we went back a second time since we knew it would be safe for me and we both enjoyed it. I had a pork chop off the specials menu the first night and the vegan cauliflower steak the second night. Loved both, but especially recommend the cauliflower steak. Keep in mind it's tapas style, so your food will show up in the order it shows up, not all at once. Getting second drinks was a little slow as the place got more crowded, but the drinks were good. Non alcoholic cocktail options looked good too -- my husband ordered something off that list but subbed in regular alcohol and was very happy with the results. The menu changes with the seasons and ingredients, but it can always be counted on to be delicious, impressive, and artistic. The platings were quite beautiful. The wine pairings were a delight. My expectations were set high, as their many accolades suggest. We both got the full experience with their friulano tasting menu. And also added on the caviar course. That may have been the only highlight of the meal. And I say that because the cheesy potato it was served on was absolutely delicious, although it was an odd pairing for the flavors of caviar which did not elevate the caviar in any way. The cheesy potatoes seemed clunky and too rustic to enhance the caviar. It would have been better served with a red meat or heartier protein. After that, absolutely nothing stood out to me as being uniquely delicious. The squid ink pasta was a major let down as the squid ink was so overpowering in the balance of the dish. Probably my least favorite course, although even that is debatable. This was a very salty dish, the first of many to come. One of the major takeaways from the meal as a whole, was how overly seasoned everything was. I am a salt fanatic and I really enjoy salt, however nothing seemed balanced when it came to salt. Just way too salty on several courses. Almost as if their proteins had been in a brine just a little too long. Although that's just a guess.... I'm glad I had the opportunity to try this restaurant however I would not go back again. It has been my experience that some places, once they earn James beard and Michelin recognition, almost give up. As in point Joel Robuchon, who lost their Michelin status. Highlighting more locally grown, seasonally harvested ingredients and showcasing them to their fullest potential in unique and innovative ways is much more impressive than caviar on cheesy potatoes. Btw, the cheesy potatoes, if served in a smaller portion, would have been an excellent accompaniment to the very salty red deer course. The desert course looked pretty and some elements were good, however not innovative nor original. Quite the lackluster afterthought, which again, was subpar.

We walked in without reservations on a Saturday evening and was lucky to have the option of dining inside or out. We were seated in the corner, which was fine except for the flies that would get trapped against the window and buzz right around us. There weren't really any other tables in the middle of the restaurant available, so we sucked it up. During the day, it was very brightly lit. But once the sun goes down, it doesn't become very dark. We were given menus by the hostess, but there was a slight delay with water service and what not. Eventually, our waiter did come by to talk a bit more about the menu. (I should note that the table was only set for a party of two and we were a party of four. So, it wasn't until our first dish arrived did they notice that we were missing tableware and plates for the rest of our party.) We mentioned that we'll be sharing a bunch of things, so this is what we ordered: The food came quickly and we did have to make room immediately. I do wish they would have paced it a bit better though. * Beet Salad $15 - They were kind enough to split this in two plates right off the get go. Since it's called a Beet Salad, I did expect a bit more beets than what was given. 3/5 * Roasted Bone Marrow $16 - This was a gorgeous presentation with three bone marrow halves topped with a little red trout roe. The accompanying buttered crusty bread was just wonderful. Although not everyone enjoyed the fig vinegar, I loved this dish! 5/5 * Fried Anchovy Stuffed Olives $12 - My mistake was seeing "fried anchovy", so I was surprised when the olives showed up. It was a lot of salt on salt. It was just okay for us and was the last thing on our table. 2/5 * House Pâté $18 - Another wow dish! The house pate was delicious! The Little Gal pretty much planted that in front of her so she could just focus on that. We did need to order more bread to enjoy all of the pate though. 5/5 * Tartare De Filet Mignon $20 - This was another favorite dish of ours and we ended up ordering another! Loved the red trout roe and crostini that came with it. 5/5 * Moules La Marinire 1 lb $27 - The mussels were so well cleaned and the sauce had so much flavor. It also came with a crusty piece of bread to soak up all that amazing sauce. 5/5 * Peach Cobbler - Before we ordered, I did ask if they had a dessert menu as I wanted to gauge how much food to get based on what desserts were available. Our waiter mentioned they had only two peach cobblers available and could put one on hold for us if we wanted it. And he did rattle off a few of their regular dessert items too. Since this peach cobbler seemed so exclusive, we did ask for that to be on hold for us. When it did arrive, I was a bit disappointed. It wasn't sweet enough for my preference. I'm not sure if it was because the peaches weren't sweet or there was a lack of sugar in the cobbler portion. 3/5 * Beignets $12 (to go) - As we were leaving, I asked one of the floor managers if they typically do something for birthdays and he confirmed that they do. He then asked if they had missed something, so I reluctantly told him that they did. The Husband did mention to the two waiters that we were celebrating a birthday, so he had told the staff. I thought that maybe because the peach cobbler took a bit longer, maybe it was forgotten. He apologized profusely and offered to send us with an order of beignets. We were pretty full and had a drive back, but he insisted and said it would only take a moment or so. So we agreed and I waited for it. The order came with 10 little freshly fried doughnut holes, lemon curd, raspberry gelee, and strawberries. We headed to the car and I enjoyed a few there. They were just okay though, nothing really special. 3/5 Overall, there were some really great highs and a couple of lows. I appreciated how the manager tried to make up for the error and did ask where we were seating, so I assume he could address it with the staff. We REALLY loved certain dishes and would return again for those. I would still rate this highly because we did have a generally good experience. 4.5 stars

We're celebrating my husband's birthday (like many others) but it was such horrible experience, we decided to leave, without ordering any dessert. I made reservation at 6 pm, with detailed instructions and spoke with restaurant, night prior to ensure they're able to accommodate my 86lb service dog. We're being brought to table, which she couldn't seem to figure out (I'm on oxygen, with a 6 ft hose) mother is holding onto my concentrator, as lady was leading us around restaurant, thru little spaces as I'm being dragged along. Then, attempted to seat us outside! I've never sat outside, especially because it's very hot out and presumed a/c would be on. Then, she led us back tables, trying to cram us into a tiny space and there's no way, we could fit 4 adults and my 86lb service dog. I picked a table close to where we sat last time, it's right in front of kitchen. The lady, conf'd my reservation over the phone and assured me, we'd get a large enough table to comfortably fit all of us. She finally seated us, with no menus...yep, there's a list of all the WRONGS and it's lengthy: we decide to skip appetizers, some of party came directly from work and we're hungry. The waitress is aware, she said, we're in right place. Ok, so we place our dinner order with our drinks order, except she forgot about my order (no biggie), but she brought my husband a Diet Coke and he ordered iced-tea. They, fixed his drink. Also, I ordered a simple salad, asked specifically for more tomatoes and she said, they can add more & asked to be halved with my husband. When salad came, it wasn't halved and had 2 cherry tomatoes that were halved. I didn't want to send it back, who knows when it will come back or if it will. Plus, I've never seen the Brasserie this empty, but managed to take them over 45 minutes (after 7 pm) before dinner is served. We couldn't understand, why would it take so long? Noticed, waitresses were bringing food back to kitchen, multiple times and my husband said, he saw waitress bring food back, she picked up each piece to show the cook. Next, we noticed menu is light on meat selection, with lots of fish options which is fine. So, we order multiple known Brasserie staples (steak & poulet) it is dry, with little to no taste. This has NEVER happened to us, when eating here and when it came time for dessert...food is already disappointing, we debate...we're probably going to wait lengthy time and be in the unbearable heat. I took leftovers home for my pup. We asked for our bill and left. I'm warm by nature, but others that are with me, can handle the heat and they're complaining it's HOT. It got so HOT, I was sweating profusely, wiping sweat off my face and by time we left, even my hair is wet! I've been here many times, especially in summer and never endured such discomfort. Sitting outside is cooler than it was inside the restaurant.
