Many other "smoke shops" in the greater Boston area come off as hokey, "cheap", ratty and dirty... not this place... it is classy, professional, fun, fascinating, retro, and a pleasure to gaze upon. read more

I'll soon be giving up my bad habit, but for the past year or so this place has been quite good to me. They sell what's called Blond Shag there, and it is a smooth highly enjoyable rolling tobacco that I recommend to anyone who smokes cigarettes. Get an ounce of it with the green Smoking papers -- it only comes to about 3 dollars, and you'll be puffin' on a little piece of heaven there. Why spend over 5 bucks a pack? Get yourself to L&P, where you can browse their cool selection of fancy tchotchkes and accoutrements, buy a beautiful chess or backgammon set (maybe even play a game, though they might have closed down their upstairs, not sure), and picture yourself as an old man sitting in a big comfy chair in a large expansive study contemplating the universe while stealing a moment with your pipe, stogey, or cigarette. I'm 43 now and I still love stepping into the mystery novel feel of the place and all the tobacco smells. Everyone's incredibly helpful and the selection can't be beat. A short preface - I love to smoke. Dear tobacco, I love you but we can't be together anymore. I'm leaving you... So as I'm quitting, I have switched over to really nice cigarettes (read: really expensive, which make me hate smoking more than one or two a day). Leavitt and Peirce has a fantastic selection of high-end butts and cigars and the shop itself is just beautiful. I would switch to a pipe so I could have the pleasure of buying pipe tobacco from the fragrant, glinting jars of brown gold. I also love Zipa, the jewelry store in the back. The counter staff is extremely nice and helpful. Also browse the incense selection and the gorgeous smoking accessories. It would be an easy five stars here if it weren't for the sheer fact that the cigarettes (even lower-end brands like Marlboro) didn't cost a dollar more than at 7-11. I don't mind paying 9$ for my Nat Sherman Classics or other sexy creatures, but the regular stuff is expensive enough as it is with the Massachusetts state taxes. I would imagine that many people stop in just for cigs, so this is a detriment to the overall awesomeness of L&P. read more

Great selection of natural rolling tobacco, and phenomenal selection of rolling papers, cheap! I use the Smoking Blue, at 75 cents for fifty leaves... And I haven't found a rolling tobacco that comes close to the Dutch Shag I roll. I'll probably order a few pounds at a time from them once I no longer live in Greater Boston. The people who work there are all very genuinely nice, and absolutely customer-focussed. Selection of pipe-tobaccos is legendary. Good cigar selection, and they're kept fresh. Wide range of imported cigarettes and hookahs and hooka tobaccos (shisha), etc. Neat selection of quality tobacco paraphernalia, and esoterica, like old-world candies and gums, gift-quality chess sets and walking sticks, and shaving razors and accoutrements. Conveniently located just 1 1/2 blocks from the Harvard Sq. T-station. And where else will you hear a clerk (Todd, in this case) ask a customer trying to pick a pipe tobacco ask "Do you want something with meaty notes, like beef jerky...?" These people don't stand on ceremony in trying to get a customer what they will enjoy, but are very professional and gracious, meanwhile. read more

This is a one-star review with an extra star for the atmosphere. They have a mediocre selection of pipes (in only three brands), but nothing high-end. The main problem is the service. I'm crossing my fingers that the woman who helped me is brand new or something, but she didn't know what meerschaum was, didn't know which brand of french pipes they carried (and didn't recognize the name when I suggested it - Chacom, if you're interested), didn't know anything about any of their pipe tobaccos -- when I asked her what their (only one) house blend pipe tobacco was like, she started telling me about how Harvard professors used to smoke there in the 1800s! It seems that if she had been there more than a week she would have picked up some product knowledge by osmosis, even if she's not a smoker herself. I see other reviews complain that the service is "snooty". Hah! What a joke. Someone who has flipped through an issue of Pipes and Tobaccos magazine in the bathroom has more grounds to be "snooty". This seems to be more of a tourist attraction than a serious pipe shop, which is totally okay! Good for them. But if you want somebody who knows a Calabash from a hole in the ground, I'd go downtown to the shop on Boston Commons. The last time I was in Boston, I stopped in there and they had a good selection and were very knowledgeable. read more

This place is like walking into a time warp. I can't imagine how cool Harvard Square must have been in the 20's or 30's, but in my imagination I see a bunch stores like Leavitt and Peirce. They don't just sell tobacco and smoking supplies, but a whole bunch of "man" items; razors, lighters, imported after shave, playing cards, etc.. All the items sold here are high quality and are very classic looking. After searching for a good cribbage board all around Boston, I finally found one I liked at Leavitt and Peirce. This is one of the best stores in Boston,and is not to be missed if visiting Harvard Square. read more

Good selection of cigars and tobacco products. They also have some nice backgammon boards and chess sets, among other gaming (poker, etc..) items. I feel like too many cigar shops are run by thugs. This isn't what L & P is about. Service is friendly and professional. If you're interested in some particular product, just ask and they are happy to help. The staff is knowledgable about the products they sell, which is the kind of good, old-fashioned business that keeps people coming back. Leavitt and Peirce is a great, old-fashioned tobacconist and general "men's store." They carry an extensive range of tobacco and cigars, and a pretty decent line of shaving creams and hardware. The full lines of Geo. F. Trumper, Caswell-Massey and Pinaud Clubman are available, among some other popular shaving goods. The staff is kind of blah, some of them are quite knowledgeable and others not so much, and in general the prices are kind of steep. Still, there is a lot of cool stuff to peruse and if you are at all into wetshaving or tobacco products then you must check this place out. read more

An amazing place for classic and classy gifts (shaving sets, pocketwatches, fountain pens), unique personal items (sweet soaps, hair pomade, cologne), and a really special shopping experience. You can buy everything you need to be a dandy here, including shaving supplies, smoking stuff, cologne, lavender candies and sometimes jewelry for your lady. This place is great for everything it has. While I'm not frequent tobacco user, they definitely have great loose varieties and a nice collection of cigars. I'm also itching to try their hookah as well. I love all the different types of board games and other items they sell there. Their prices are good as well. I've been going to Leavitt & Peirce on and off for a good 17 or 18 years now because it's a great place. It is an institution. Really, Harvard Square has changed dramatically over the years but, at least it still has Leavitt & Peirce. They have a wide variety of products for sale from a great selection of cigars in an old fashioned, perhaps original, wood and sliding glass case that doubles as their counter; to sets of Go, pimp canes, stylish pens, shaving kits, and much more. Reasonable prices on most items and a fairly knowledgeable staff make it an even nicer experience. About 6 months ago a friend of mine convinced me to buy one of their cigarette "rolling" machines. Made by Gizeh, it cost about $15. Each week I purchase 5 ounces of tobacco which, they blend for me from two of the tobaccos of the several loose tobaccos they have available. Together with a box of Mascotte pre-rolled filtered cigarette tubes, I have at least 7 days of tobacco for about $24. It ends up costing less than half a week supply of name brand cigarette packs. Plus, they're tobacco is far superior. It doesn't do any harm either, that people who invariably ask what brand of cigarettes I'm pulling out my cig case, tend to be impressed/fascinated with the quality, uniqueness, and affordability of my cigarettes. All in all, Leavitt & Peirce is a wonderful reminder of why small businesses are so much better. You have to check the place out if haven't already! If you can't find something for yourself, you'll find a great gift for someone you care about. read more

Last of the old-school tobacconists! This is an amazing place, oozing with old world charm and replete with all the luxuries of a real tobacco shop. The hours are sometimes inconvenient, but it is worth a special trip even if you are just window shopping. Chain stores just can't compete with the feeling you get here - like stepping back in time (except for the prices - but that's mostly taxes... not L&P's fault). If you are a tobacco fan and live even remotely close to Harvard Square, make some time and make the trip. You won't regret it! read more

I first ventured into L & P in the Fall of 1961 as a freshman at H. The first entrance to the store is a kaleidoscope of sights and smells. I can still recall the deep scent of tobaccos and must.........what a rush for a countryboy! Then the sights! And in those days the craftsman who sat behind the storefront window actually working on pipes!! A recent memory got me looking online and has revived my interest and desire to see what might be the eighth wonder of the world.....at least or tobacco lovers!! I love this place! I have been going here, since, well, I was a youngin. Not only do they have good cigars at good prices, but the atmosphere is awesome. I've been a loyal customer of Leavitt & Peirce for about ten years. I typically buy loose tobacco and rolling papers and roll my own as the cost and quality easily trumps prepackaged cigarettes. The Employees are Great, very knowledgeable and always friendly. The selection is amazing and the old school atmosphere can't be beat, especially in a Harvard Square that has lost a lot of its former charm. And they sell patchouli soap !! read more
