Happy to come back here - the XLBs' flavor was impressively improved. I remember that about 4 years ago I came here for their XLB (take out). At that time, I was not impressed. The skin was thin but torn, and the flavor was just mediocre. BUT recently, I came here for their well reputed frozen dumplings. Dumpling House Gerrard is one of the few places that have reputed frozen dumplings in the downtown East Toronto. And they have XLBs. Why not trying again!!! I got - XLB (ground pork, take out): the skin were thicker than before. It was a bit disappointing, but it has good chewy texture. Most importantly, the soup was plenty with complexity and delicacy, and the meat was super tender and flavorful. Tasted natural and tasty even with the minimum condiment flavor. Bold but I liked the totality of it. - Frozen dumpling : # Cabbage and Pork(1F) : I boil-cooked them at home. Oh my the skin was perfectly chewy, sealing the contents perfectly. The moment I bit, the juice popped out on the table. Super juicy. Subtle seasonings, but not lacking. It can go with any condiments of your choice! # Veggie dumpling (14F) : Boil-cooked. It has roughly chopped nappa and fried tofu etc. It tasted good, but my personal preference is the use of finely chopped, heartier, and grassy flavor like spinach or pea leaves. I am frequently in Toronto and make it a must do by dining at Lee's. The dumplings are made fresh to order and tender always. I have never had a solid round meatball fall out of the dumpling as has been my experience at way too many dumpling houses. The other dishes are always tasty and seemingly made with great care . If fancy is what you want you won't find it here but what you will find is genuinely warm service and great tasting authentic Chinese food. Came here for dinner yesterday and was so disappointed. This place used to be good. The seats and tables are very tightly packed, and in need of some updating. The food is so far from what it used to be. It lacked flavour, freshness, and care. The soup filled dumplings' wraps were too thick for what it should be. The filling lacked its usual complexity of flavours. Not sure if the chef has changed, but they're definitely not as good as they once were. I can see why there were no other Asian people eating here at the time. The only saving grace was the service as our servicer was quite attentive and very friendly. My cousin has been here many times but wanted to come here for their rainbow dumplings. Well, we got one colour (green) ones. It's located in the original part of Chinatown. We dropped in on a Wednesday afternoon (around 12:45pm). There's plenty of booth seating inside and you can even see them making fresh dumplings in the back. There's a TV in the middle of the restaurant that was playing some type of Asian music show. I was surprised to see that they give you water Korean style. Nice. The menu is massive with dumplings, noodles, rice & all day special combos, cold platter & salads, Northern Chinese cuisine, soup, pork, greens, Szechuan cuisine, chicken, beef/lamb, seafood and dessert. They also have a most popular menu (with pictures) if you need help choosing. - Boiled chive & pork dumplings (#2) ($6.99 for 12) - can never go wrong with this classic combo. The filling was tasty. - Boiled dill & pork dumplings (#9A) ($6.99 for 12) - lots of dill flavour (which I love) but the pork was dry. Meat was way too chewy compared to the other dumplings. - Wonton in hot chili sesame sauce (#21) ($5.59) - my cousin really liked these. The meat inside was very tender and had an interesting mix of peanut sauce and chili oil on top. - Green soup filled dumpling with ground pork (#24A) ($8.99 for 7) - these are green, spinach infused "XLB's". I say that in quotations because it's Chinese style. Wrapping was much thicker than normal. Still good but not quite the same. Random that they give you an odd number of dumplings. - Spring onion pancake (#25) ($3.99) - haven't had a green onion pancake in ages. Nicely fried and went well with the side of hot sauce we asked for. - Minced pork with noodles in Peking sauce (#36) ($8.49) - we asked them to sub in fresh green noodles for this dish. Pretty good, no frills Chinese food in the area. To be honest there are quite a few just-ok Asian places in old Chinatown. You have to try them to see what the quality is like. I was surprised by how good this place was. BF had the beef noodle soup (I assume it's meant to be Taiwanese style) and we got a serving of pork and cabbage fried dumplings and fried string beans. The fried dumplings were juicy as hell and not too crispy- I would say they're pretty perfect. Flavours were nice too. As for service- it's not great but that's not what you come to a mom/pop Chinese place for. You come here for good cheap food and this place delivers. We're definitely coming back here. read more

We ordered two dishes of dumplings and a soup, they give you complmentary hot green tea in a pot. We had to write the order numbers down on the back of a piece of paper and hand it to the waitress haha. Didn't mind at all because the food was cheap-ish and we were hungry and craving dumplings. Pay attention to the numbers you're ordering, some of them are out of order BUT YOU HAVE TO PUT THE NUMBER THAT'S ON THE MENU. For example 18,19,20,210, 22, 23,24 is listed on the menu? This place should be called Noodle House instead of Dumpling House. I've had both the noodles and dumplings here and the noodles were by far the stand out item! My mom - who grew up in Shanghai even raved about the noodles and how authentic they were! She loved the white oval noodles (I cannot remember what this dish was called unfortunately but it is pictured below). For me, my favourite dish was the braised beef noodles in soup. I don't feel like this dish could get any better! It is simple and the homemade noodles really stand out. The dumplings on the other hand I feel like they were good but not a standout. The wrapping was a bit too thick for my liking. I still find The Dumpling House on Spadina to be superior in terms of dumplings. Also they don't have pork & shrimp dumplings which are my favourite! That being said, I wish Dumpling House was closer to me. I would love to get the braised beef noodles more often - they make such a comforting meal! read more

I've been here about a dozen times, and I've never reviewed this hidden gem, and I hope I dont regret the reveal. It's in old China town, next to some really good chinese markets. A lot of spicy Sichuan style dishes I love. Their best dishes all come on a secondary menu so it's easy to decide what to eat. The glass noodle salad is smothered is savoury peanut butter sauce, the fish soup is super spicy with meaty chunks of fish that just melt in your mouth. The spicy beef tongue, and tripe is super tender and flavorful. The soup dumplings, fried dumplings are a must try. General Tao's chicken is yummy as well however it's sometimes too sweet and soggy. This place is shut on Tuesdays and is a cash only place. Definitely my go-to spot for dumplings in the city. I've always had a thing for mom and pop shops and this definitely lives up to that and then some. All the dumplings here are handmade, the noodles are handmade, the desserts are handmade; you name it, it's handmade. That's the way it should be. No there's no over-the-top flavours and out of this world creativity. There's no 5 star service and you're not going to rave to your friends about how clean and inviting this space is. But in the end it's just a great comforting and delicious meal that won't cost you an arm and a leg. You can really taste the difference of freshly made dumplings and noodles. There are no freezer burns and that freshly thawed taste to their stuff. There are no cold spots and dried dumplings here. You can literally see the freshness as the old folks are always hard at work by the cash counter kneading away at fresh dough and patiently folding and pinching each and every little dumpling. I can't tell you which dish is the best and which one is a must because they all are great. It's a testament to their craft and prove that with fresh ingredients and great care you can't really make a bad dish out of anything. Definitely a must try if you are still considering. read more

This place is a frickin dump hat qserves dumplings available in most supermarkets (KJ Brand) and then goes on to steam them to create a soggy gelatinous lump. I found this place last year and it's been a nice, causal little spot on Gerrard to go for some yummy dumplings. However, on this particular day, never having any issues before, I came in and grabbed a middle booth. There were no customers seated at this time (5:30pm). When I sat down, there were menus already placed on the table and I started to write down on the piece of paper provided, a list of the dish order that I would like to have. I wrote down the order number for a particular steamed bun dish listed. Once the waitress (long black hair that was tied into a low long ponytail, wearing glasses that has reddish-brownish hinges that sat on the either side of her face, petite, about 5'5-5'6 and looked to be around 50) picked up my order and the menus, she placed the menus in the pile at the front counter. Then, she came back and started to yell at me for writing a "non existing" order number. I said to her that in the menu that I was looking through, it had that order number listed. She started to grab a nearby menu (beside us) and showed me that it was not there. I was not trying to fight with her whatsoever, I really do like this little dumpling spot and I was merely trying to show her that the previous menu that I was looking at, did have it listed and I was willing to show her. She wasn't having it and started to yell at me more, raising her voice even louder, saying how this is the only menu and she is not willing to grab the other menus and she didn't believe anything I was telling her! Then, she went back to the front counter and started to bad mouth me, not very subtly, to her co workers in front of me in the empty restaurant saying how I was the one who was being unreasonable, ignorant and childish. As well as that, all the menus were the same! There is no such thing as this order number! How dare I challenge her! Hearing that right in my face Is super unprofessional and very disrespectful! I'm pretty laid back, I would have understood if she told me calmly that their menus had changed and as a result, some of their beloved dishes are not available anymore. However, the amount of yelling and bad mouthing that had happened within the ten minutes that I have sat down and placed my order. I'm super disappointed and very hurt that this happened and that the other workers/waitresses did not try to de-fuel the situation that was occurring in front of them except their old man boss, who could only nervously laugh and say a quick sorry since he does not speak any English.
