Jiangnan Handmade Dim Sum is a must try! Great food, flavourful handmade dim sum, authentic Jiang Nan style juicy buns, nice decor, everything was freshly made and ready quickly. They had quite a few delivery orders which kept them busy. Their popular other location is on Yonge Street near Sheppard Avenue. I did notice a special promotional offer on some of the delivery apps which were offering online lunch combos or 25% off so it's worth looking for online promotions. For those who opt to stay at the restaurant rather than order takeout or delivery, it's an easy table side ordering process. By scanning the QR code on the table you can place your order directly with the restaurant. It was simple and straightforward. Food was ready very fast. The first dish to arrive at the table was the juicy Pork pan-fried buns served with black sesame seeds sprinkled on top. I took one bite into the bun and discovered how much liquid was hidden inside these buns. The skin was thicker than expected, crispy brown and fried at the bottom. Next to arrive at the table was the decadent Braised beef brisket* noodle soup. Absolutely delicious and IMHO the perfect combination of flavours. Hands down one of the better ones this city has to offer. The third dish to arrive was the very crispy Scallion pancakes. They were good. Finally the Juicy pork steamed buns came in an order of 6 perfectly pleated wrappers that were folded so neatly they almost looked too perfect to eat! Excitedly came back! We ordered: #1. XLB (Crab and pork) #2. Kan Pao Chicken #3. Wonton with pork and bamboo shoots #4. Shanghai style fried rice #5. Pan fried dumpling with pork and shrimp #6. SJB with pork and prawn My partner thought #1. XLB was good but lacked real crab texture. I kind of opposed to that, as considering the affordable price, their Crab XLB is good enough! I still think that this is hitting a good balance between, price, flavor, meat/seafood stuffing, and the amount of soup. Strong wrapper with reasonable thinness with no leaking of soup. #2. I ordered this because I heard a good review from a trusted foodie. The chicken's texture is juicy, plumpy and crispy. Great wok job that I cannot achieve at home. Liked this. #3. I was disappointed as I could not feel the bamboo texture in the wonton. My partner said that the soup was bland, which I agreed when I had the first sip. But at the same time, I loved the use of delicate vegetables in the soup. Especially the hornwort scent. It resembled Mitsuba (Japanese herb) which adds crispy texture and a refreshing scent. The use of Nori (Black seaweed sheet) is also good adding natural texture and flavor to the soup. #4. The fried rice was a OK. A bit lacked depth in flavor. #5. This dumpling was the highlight of the day. Juicy-juicy pork with plumpy shrimps, embraced by the perfectly thin, flavorful wrapper which bottom is crisply fried. #6. SJB was great, I loved the soup that is not over seasoned but with layers of umami (from meat, and shrimps). Northern style dumplings. Everything was delicious and the dumplings were fried perfect crispness and very soupy. The XLB steamed dumplings were good but the wrap could be a bit thinner. Service was quick & efficient. The server was very quiet and not interactive at all. For only 3 other tables, the server could be more attentive. Our soy sauce and vinegar containers were empty at the table. I had to ask her for some. And she never came back to check on us or to refill our tea pot. For the lack of service, I had to give 3 stars. The decor is contemporary Asian. Here on a weekday lunch, we got a table right away. Recently, I visited Zhang's Juicy Fried Buns in North York. I noticed that it was rebranded as Jiangnan Handmade Dim Sum. However, when you look at the menu at this food stall and on Fantuan, Zhang's is still being used. I looked at my Fantuan app today and noticed that this Jiangnan was roughly a five-minute drive from my home. What drew me to placing an order was getting its signature mini pork wontons in chicken soup for $1 when you place a minimum order of $30. The soup is regularly $12 on its own. Frankly, it's easy to hit $30 when it comes to dim sum. I love dim sum. I ordered the following items: - Pork pan-fried buns (6) - Juicy pork steamed buns (6) - Mini pork wontons in chicken soup - Scallion pancake The app indicated that my order would be ready in twenty minutes. It was perfect to take my time getting there. This plaza has many restaurants. I found a parking spot and backed into it. I then walked over to the eatery. I had a friendly woman standing at the counter. In front of her was a bag of food. It looked like mine. I said that I had a Fantuan order and rattled off the order number. Sure enough, the bag of food in front of both of us was mine. I thanked her and walked out, taking a brief photo of the eatery. There were maybe two couples dining in. The restaurant looked quaint and well-maintained. I drove home. I blinked and I was there. I then unpacked my food. The downside was that one of the small containers housing soy-vinegar sauce had leaked onto a piece of cardboard and in the plastic bag. I had two of these small containers, so it wasn't a huge loss. It was a bit messy cleaning up. I started with the mini wonton soup. It was excellent. The mini wontons had the perfect amount of pork filling that was yummy. I liked the baby greens, wood ear, green onions, and more in the soup. The broth was perfect. It wasn't oversalted. I enjoyed this soup. I got juicy pork steamed buns that were essentially xiao long baos. Each one was delicate when you used chopsticks to pick it up. When I opened the box, two of the buns already had soup escape thanks to how thin the wrapper was. However, they tasted yummy with the pork filling and steamed wrapper. The others with the soup were yummy. They could probably use more soup in them, but I enjoyed them all. Jiangnan and Zhang's are known for their pan-fried buns. They are soup-filled. The bun is crispy on the bottom, to the point where you can hear the crispiness when you take a bite. The soup never leaks out of them because the dough has enough thickness to withstand breaking. You get the best of both crispy and chewy worlds. The pork filling was incredibly flavourful and juicy. I liked that it wasn't oversalted. No fillers. There was more soup in these buns, which worked well with the filling. I also got scallion pancakes. The pancake was cut into smaller triangles. I loved the green onions in them. The pancakes were lightly pan-fried and lightly salted. They were delicious. I'd get them again. If it weren't for the sauce spillage and a couple of punctured xiao long baos, this eatery would get a perfect rating. I loved my food. We decided to give this place a try because of an Instagram post where the food looked pretty good and there was a deal where the Xiao Long Bao is $1 if you order more than $30 worth of food. If you look at the last picture, it is pretty obvious why the Xiao Long Bao is $1; there's basically no soup and there was more of a dough taste. The other dishes were okay, but the meat for the wonton and the pan fried bao wasn't smooth. The noodles were quite bland, but it's okay if you eat it with the meat. Came here for dinner and ordered the pan fried dumpling , dumplings, soup dumpling, beef noodle soup, dry scallion noodle. All the dishes were mediocre. I've never had sang ji bao or pan fried dumplings where the meat inside is separated and not intact as one, this gave me weird vibes. The soup dumpling skin was too thick imo. The dumplings were ok but nothing special. The beef noodle soup and scallion dried noodles has basically no taste was so ever. It was so bland. Unfortunately I won't be back. Food is for me was just average. The service was really not there. One person working the front with a full restaurant from giving Ubereats out to putting the dishes from kitchen to the tables to giving our bills so we can leave. I came here cause on sites I saw people posting about their pan fried buns so I am a huge fan of the ones at sang ji bao so decided to try the one here. Boy I was so disappointed, I found it lacking flavour, the bun wrapper was not equally same thickness all around. The murals on the wall was a nice touch for decor tho. Upon entering, I was impressed by the traditional wall decor featuring paintings and text, which really added to the authentic Chinese restaurant vibe. This time trying out this Sichuan cuisine restaurant, the quality of their pan-fried buns is pretty good. However, it's a pity that the sour taste of the pickled fish dish is not very pronounced, and the skin of the xiaolongbao is also on the thicker side. But overall, the standard is above average. You order through QR code and here was what we got... Mapo Tofu-$16 - Decent portion, but very oily and not enough mala spice taste to it. I came here because of Instagram. It looked way better on instagram than in real life - when I went (Aug 2024), a lot of the menu items were not available. It's true that each menu item is less than $10, but the portion sizes are small and I need to order multiple dishes to actually be full so its ends up being just as much as other places. The food itself was okay. There was nothing special that would bring me back to this restaurant. I think I could make a better oil noodle than them to be honest. I cannot make soup dumplings so that one was my default my favourite. It was not bad, but again nothing special. The oats had a good crunch to them. Drowned in chilli oil. The wontons were raw when I bit into it. I only knew because mine was cold in the middle. My friends, whose was not frozen in the middle ate the whole wonton. . Its hard to tell if its raw for people like us so that was very very concerning. The only saving grace (which is why I gave it a 3 star instead of a 2) was when I called over the server, I barely spoke, she saw the middle of the wonton, look horrified, took it immediately, gave us a new one and took the item off the bill. Given the many restaurants in Toronto, I would not go back here. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. The price is fairly regular. Went to check out this place as a foodie in a fb group I'm in said it was the most authentic shanghainese dumplings they have had out of Shanghai. So of course I had to try it. I went to their website and placed an order. Process was easy, had both English and Chinese with pictures. When I placed the order there was a "convenience fee" that was snuck in there. I wasn't pleased about that but maybe this is the norm if ordering online? I've never noticed before with other restaurants though. Payment is restricted to pay in store when picking up. When I went to pick up my order there was a big sign on the door saying all menu items 15% off between a certain date. The date I ordered/picked up was within the date range. But when I went into ask, first the lady spoke no English and kept yelling at me to pay. Then she screamed for someone in the back to come out to talk to me. When this guy came out, his English was only so-so, but he said I do get 15% off if I pay cash. When he told the woman what he told me the lady immediately screamed no no no, no discount. Discount only for eating in. Nowhere on the sign did it say that. I didn't want to argue so I picked up my food and left. I ordered pan fried pork buns, pan fried salted yolk pork buns, pan fried pork and shrimp dumplings, and beef soup noodles. Crispy wise, since I ordered takeout, by the time I got home it was soft. So I've taken that part out of this review. The texture of the meat in the pan fried pork bun was mush. It fell apart and disintegrated, it's like the meat couldn't be held together. The ones with the salted egg you had maybe half a yolk in each pan fried bun. The shrimp and pork pan fried dumpling was ok. Texture was good for the filling. That held together well. And the dumplings were large. But flavour wise I would have preferred if they had pork and chive as an option. The beef soup noodle was disappointing. There were only 1 or 2 pieces of beef meat. Horrible place. I saw it on Instagram and thought it looked good. But 3/5 people got food poisoning from the beef brisket noodle which was sour tasting for some reason. Each dish that came out of the kitchen was also cold... They have nice wall art thought... and there was only 1 server so everyone was waiting an hour plus for food.
