"Military Haircuts ... $9 and up" is the sign on the front glass, in large font big enough to read from across the parking lot. Given I walked in right as it was getting dark, that's what brought me inside. Great, I need a simple haircut and don't want to pay a bunch for something non-compliant before my monthly drill. I sit down, I inquire with the barber to confirm the pricing, and she says for civilians its $12 and $9 for military. Excellent I reply, I have my military ID on me. She apologizes and asks me some perfunctory questions to which I respond in-kind. She starts cutting my hair. About 3/4 of the way in she mentions the Marines need their haircut every week to be compliant, which I raised an eyebrow at. I told her I just do it once a month before drill and I just trim the sides enough to skate by if no one is looking too hard. Near the end, she says that the haircuts are $9 only for ACTIVE DUTY Marines and points to the sign on the wall, which says "MARINE HAIRCUTS $9" and on the very end in small sharpie lettering (about 1/10th the size of the MARINE HAIRCUTS font) active duty is scribbled out in permanent marker. So in effect, they mean ACTIVE DUTY MARINES, not a "Marine Style/Compliant" haircut. So, legally they are probably covered doing a bait and switch but what a surefire way to discriminate. In summary, NAVY, AIR FORCE, ARMY / NATIONAL GUARD, STATE GUARD, COAST GUARD MILITARY according to this shop, you aren't considered military, as their sign outside is pretty deceptive. If you aren't an active duty marine (Sorry United States Marine Corps Reserve) no discounts for your regulation haircuts. The haircut itself was fine, nothing special, but then again regulation cuts are pretty much that, nothing special. read more

I wasn't even acknowledged when I waked in, despite the shop being slow. There were two ladies cutting hair, and after waiting for about 10 minutes, one of them finished. She then took 10 minutes to clean her workstation, for which I patiently waited, and she could tell I was waiting on her. After hoping she would call me up herself, I had to ask because she didn't even glance over at me. To my polite request, she just shook her head no and that I had to wait for the other lady; she didn't even give an explanation she just kept shaking her head no. I tried telling her that it would only be a quick trim with scissors but she refused with no further explanation. Unfortunately I had to walk out because I had other errands to do. So I asked for a refund and she instantly became angry and told us to never come back. It's not right to treat a customer like that. Never coming back. So I would like to start out that the actual haircut I received was fine. The fade was even and it looked just as I was envisioning. I was sat at the station directly next to register. The issue came when I was asked if I wanted "razor". In my mind and from previous experiences with barbers, "razor" means a straight razor used to achieve a skin fade. After I accepted the "razor" she gets out an electric shaver and goes to town on the back of my head. This caused such an irritation that it gave me about 100 ingrown hairs, each one itchy and looked horrible with tons of red bumps. I had to get hydrocortisone cream and apply heat 3x a day with a compress to reduce the inflammation and itchiness. Finally, they have a sticker that indicates they take cards, as well as a machine that is plugged in that can take cards. They have a sign that looks like it has been there for a long time that says the machine is broken and they only accept cash. I didn't fight it, but clearly, they have the ability to take cards but don't want pay the fees. They made me go over to Kims Mart and use their ATM. Kinda shady. read more

I would have to say that I'm very surprised for the cost. Most places charge like 15+ in san diego, which is a big bummer on the wallet. But not only is the haircut worth the cost ($10 for a civ), it's quick, too! She was so precise with her cuts and so quick. I didn't have a mirror to look at, so I was very skeptical. But the haircut actually turned out to be exactly what I was looking for in a 1-fade and a "little off the top." Before going to Happy Barber on Clairemont on the 805, I would sometimes get my hair cut from Lee's on Miramar. I have a lot of trust issues with my hair and at that time I was experimenting with my barbers around the SD area w/o paying for that $25 fade from real barbers. I would say Lee's is a hit or miss. If you're expecting something complicated than something super basic, like say a fade you shouldn't go in with much expectations. I got a fade by the only guy worker, and it was slightly uneven, uneven enough for me to get annoyed. I asked him to fix it but he didn't really do much. This place does get crowded though on weekends! By 10AM on a Saturday, the place had a wait! There's no tickets or anything for waiting, just goes by first come first serve. The card machine was not working when I came here... so bring cash in case. I luckily had cash and I never carry cash. There is an ATM machine outside too if you forget. *note, if you've never been inside an asian salon/barber before, fair warning the barbers tend to talk to each other in their native language as their cutting your hair. If you are in the market for a men's haircut and you favor movie stars like Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, and/or other rugged, older manly-men who kick ass and save the world while dishing out sardonic, wry witticisms, then you should definitely mosey on in to Lee's shop. I like a #1 razor cut for my entire dome-piece, with the edges cleaned up around the ears and neck. They do this job admirably. I also witnessed some Marines getting their regulation cut, and Lee's barbers did the job quickly, efficiently, and to perfect effect. Wait time = 0 minutes. I like that a lot. The post-cut massage was sweet, and the price cannot be beat (I paid $10 dollars and tipped $5). I was in and out of there with a haircut I enjoyed in less than 10 minutes for $15 bucks. In summary, I'm more than pleased with the overall experience and am now a regular customer of this business. read more

Not only was it the same cost as happy barber down the way ( super cheap only $9!) but the lady that cut my hair at Lee's really knew what she was doing. She took her time using scissors for all the finer parts, and was still able to finish quickly. And they have better hours too! If you are looking for a fade, this is a great place to get it. There are several ladies that can fade which makes the wait time relatively non-existent. This is a big plus for me because I dislike sitting in a barber shop for a hour or so. If you are not in the military and/or don't need a fresh haircut for Monday morning, I recommend you get a haircut on a day other than Sunday. Sunday's can be pretty busy. The prices are great and if you are military, you get a military discount - 7 Dollars. I believe seniors are 9 and regular adults are 10. The hours are 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. every day but Saturday which is 7 to 7. read more
