We've had good experiences with Leeward Pediatric Dentistry! When it came to choosing a dentist for my 1.5 year old son, I was nervous, but LPD has been kind and gentle with my son, especially during his first visit. I had to fill out a medical history form in the office upon first arriving. They have a nice waiting room with fish tanks that my son just loves. They also play cute kid's movies in the waiting room. I do remember one time they were playing slow R&B jams once, which I thought was inappropriate, but the next time I visited it was decent, office-type music. We were called to the back for his cleaning. My son was very nervous and cried quite a bit even though I was holding him and they were being very gentle. The staff was so kind and accommodating of him, and I was really grateful. Our second visit went a little smoother, as my son wasn't quite as nervous. The dentist was very kind. Some of the assistants/hygienists were having a hard time using the X-Ray machine for a neighboring patient, so they were trying to reboot the computer next to us for quite some time, sort of crowding our limited space. The wait for the dentist was a LITTLE bit long, but not too bad. They are able to accommodate my requests for early-morning appointments, too! Then they blame you for not texting the number they provided about rescheduling. So next time you text the number for rescheduling and they say nothing for weeks. So you go in person and they say you've missed your appointment and they blame you for them being unprofessional and unorganized all while rolling their eyes at you. They'll even ignore you when you walk in and stand at the check in counter and roll their eyes at you. read more

My child started attending here at infant. The first visit went fine, which was during COVID. Had to stay in our car until they were ready for us. Hygienist seemed like she was doing this work for some time and knew what she was doing. Very gentle and quick with my 6 month old. Met Dr. Hori right after. Second visit on the other hand, was a NIGHTMARE. Checking in process, no longer had to wait in my car. Took awhile for us to see the hygienist, maybe about 15-20 minutes wait time. The two receptionist upfront were very unprofessional. Talking on their personal cellphone, taking calls and texting. Plus having personal conversations among each other, laughing and not even using a quiet voice (there was another family with us in the waiting room ). Once the hygienist saw us, young female, she seemed a little nervous. She asked me the same question twice. She was adamant of taking X-rays of my 1 year old teeth. Mind you my child is only 1, and was already crying and kicking. After the first try, the hygienist should have stopped, but then proceeded to take another 2 try. Doctor Hori wasn't even in at the time of visit. After that visit, my child is now TRAUMATIZED with any doctor visits. After that terrible experience, we switched dentistry office. The staff here is fun and very energetic and always so extra:) They are located in the brown building(formally known as the old american savings bank building) next to Times supermarket. They are kid safe and kid friendly. My niece and nephews come here for their cleansing and they love it. They are great with kids and I recommended bring your kids here for all their dental needs. My daughter had dental work (fills) done by Dr. Hori on Jan of this year (2018) Its a long story of what happened that day.. Anyways, we now live in the mainland and lately my daughter has been complaining about pain in her teeth. Her dentist here took a look and the teeth's where she had fills done are now rotten and she has an infection that spread above the teeth's. The Dr said it's due to the fills in her teeth, theres too much. So she has to have dental work done where they will be extracting and all that because the infection spread to her gums. I have a lot to say but I won't. My daughter has been a patient here since she was 1-2 and she's 5 now. And for the staff who did have patience with her, thank you! She really hated this place (I'm just being honest)especially that room in the back, green door. And she is definitely scared of Dr. Hori. But who loves the dentist, right?! Last week was the first time taking my son to this dentist office because his last appointment my mom took him. I was terrified to see his reaction to the chair and all the tools so I asked her to kindly take him, as he would surely be more brave for her. To my surprise she said he was great! Chose this place because it the closest pediatric dentist to where I live. The BLDG is poorly labeled so it took me driving around it a couple times before we figured it was the right place. As we walked in the placed smelled like a fish market my kids held their noses until we got into the elevator. We arrived to the office 10 min till 2pm but the door was locked. I peeked into the window and saw that there were ppl inside having a mtg in the lobby. Another family and I waited 15 mins before they opened their doors for us to enter, now why would you schedule a office mtg during office hours? In the waiting room the decor is very kid friendly and warming but the waiting area is small. My first child was not seen till about 50 mins after our appt time. They mixed up my kids names and my kids played musical chairs while the staff tried to figure out which kid was what age. My middle child in their system was her father's name and when they finally cleared the mix up it was 330 pm. As I was standing in the hallway inbetween the rooms that my kids were in, a man walked down in the middle of the clinic BAREFOOTED and his feet look like he is in dire need of a pedicare, like HELLO this is considered a medical facility! At the end of the visit, we waited another 10 mins before we were given our co pay amounts, but their receipt did not have a break down of the services, insurance and co pay amounts. They also did not give me an estimate for the future visit of my eldest child. The staff were friendly but they clearly need more training working their system because a patient should not have to see the confusion and lack of organization, especially at any type of medical facilty. LASTLY, ALL people whether employee or vistors need to have footwear when inside the treatent rooms. read more

Update: They re-did their office layout, and it looks so much more spacious and inviting compared to how it was in the past. It does not feel cluttered anymore lol. The service remains true to the motto "kid safe, kid friendly" the staff and Dr Hori himself are very easy to talk to, and makes sure that you as parents understand whatever procedures your children will have to go through before proceeding. Their office has also been voted as one of the best Pediatric Dentistry office in 2015 by the Honolulu Magazine. Absolutely amazing! Got us in ASAP for an emergency appointment for my 3 year old that has never been seen there. As he fell and pushed one of his teeth upward. The dental hygienist what a sweet and amazing lady she was. Very kind caring and loving with my 3 year old. The dentist then came in and she was just as amazing! They have the rooms with kid decor. Ours was toy story! Chairs to fit the little ones sizes and even TV on the ceiling with cartoons on for when they look up. Their prices are way way affordable, as we went in with no dental insurance. Located right between my favorite grocery stores; Waipahu Festival Market & Times, this dental office is a gem. I've been with Dr. Hori for at least 10 years. Although I'm probably his eldest patient, I truly do not trust anyone but him. The staff is very kind & always accommodates my busy schedule. They offer text message appointment reminders which come in handy. Dr. Hori offers a wide range of services, from the basic 6 month check up to teeth whitening, braces & he also offers varnish fluoride after cleaning. The office's decor is kid friendly & the patient rooms are brightly colored, which makes it a perfect place to Snapchat while you're at the office. My sons go there routine checkup and cleaning for years and have little bit filling few times. I have been receiving large bill after our visit. Routine check up and cleaning should be fully covered by insurance and dentist office was calling us to schedule for it. But our balance is increasing by every bill even we paid in full on the time of service. Now I was contacting with billing department and its audit team and find out that many X-rays and cleaning are denied for frequency. There are many claim filing errors and dental office was screwing us up over a year now. I go different dentist but never have this kind of issue. Billing department says a lot of "denied for frequency" that means there is unnecessary amount of x-ray and cleaning was claimed? They never told us and out of nowhere we got big surprise. ***READ***READ***READ*** ****Went in for my 2yr old son's cavity, left with a missing front tooth that they tried to lie about and take no fault in it!***** Don't not waste your time taking your kids there!!! They're dishonest and all about making money on your kids...meaning you go there for one thing and leave with several different other things done by the doctor with NO permission!!! I've been taking my kids there for several years with no major incident, Until just this year I took my 2 year old son in for cavities that he was going to fix. Dr. Hori has a habit of not letting you know what his plans are till after the fact it's all ready done!!! So moving on with my story..... My 2 year old was crying when we let them take him to the back which for any parent it's heart breaking to watch... about an hour and a half goes by and the front desk calls us up to the front. My husband goes up to talk to them and they tell him that my 2yr. old son's teeth came OFF... he was so furious that he came back to me and told me "you better handle this right now cause they just told me that his teeth came off wtf". So I go up there and they tell me that I can go back in the room in 20 minutes the doctor is finishing up right now, they'll call me. So I wait and I'm getting pissed by the second just thinking of how the HELL did his teeth come OFF. As soon as there done my son comes walking out... it breaks my heart... his eyes is soo puffed from crying that its like he got punched on both eyes. His mouth is stuffed with gauze coming from every direction that i couldn't tell what teeth was missing yet. His breathing was so irregular that you just knew it was from profusely crying for a long period of time. We just kept hugging and telling him "are you OK" but he wouldn't talk and he didn't talk till hours later, which is not his character. ..... So I go to the back room and the assistant is trying to explain to me what they did in this visit. But all I cared about was what happened to his teeth so I asked her. She has the lying nerve to tell me that "Oh your son's tooth was loose" I tell her "No it was NEVER loose, so what are you taking about" then she tells me "Well it must of been loose because his tooth came off" at this time I'm losing my patients talking to her so I tell her "stop telling me my son's tooth was loose cause it was NEVER loose, I'm done with you where's Dr. Hori I want to talk to him" she says nothing but "yes you should talk to him, I'll call him out". Another dentist aid was next to us listening to our conversation, that as soon as Dr.Hori comes out she yells out "Code Yellow". Anyhow, I look at Dr. Hori and I tell him "Explain to me how my son's front bottom tooth came out" He basically word for word tells me "Oh its very common for a tooth to come off while putting on a cap, at least it's his bottom tooth its not that noticeable"!!! That's his exact word! I wanted to punch his bottom teeth out and tell him "oops at least it's the bottom tooth its not that noticeable" instead I told him "my son's teeth will not grow back till 4-5 years from now how can you fix this gap" and he just said "Sorry but there's nothing I can do for him" and left. I couldn't spend another second in that office I just booked it out of their office. Before I left the front desk asked me when is the next appointment for visit and I said NEVER and left! Doctor never called to find out how everything was going and that's the last time I will EVER bring my kids! If you make a mistake... all we want as parents is the truth!!! We trust you with our kids if something goes wrong you don't try to lie about it or take no fault in it! Every parent deserves the truth especially behind closed doors! My son is so terrified of dentist it was a traumatic experience for him. Just imagine being a 2 years old and the dentist is capping your tooth and it comes off, think about the pressure he the "doctor" had to put on my son for a PREFECT NON LOOSE TOOTH to come OFF! read more

I've been bringing my son to this dentist since 2006. I was receiving medical through the state of Hawaii for him and this was one of their approved locations. I continued to go here even after I cancelled state insurance and paid for services. I was just denied an appointment because we were 12 minutes late! Literally, walking into the building and they call to say I've been cancelled. Enduring the rail construction traffic through Waipahu, I would assumed that this might be understandable. Apparently not. It was a mess from the jump. They first called me a few days before the original appointment which was next week, informing me that they would be closed. Sure, no problem so I tried to reschedule for the following week. At their request, I agreed to come in today instead. They then called me at 10:30am to see if I could come in at 11, instead of 11:30, which is what they scheduled me for. I said no since that was not enough time to get there and since I was pulling my son out of school for this appointment at 11am. Then at 11:30 they called and said I need to hurry because they get off at noon. Now please tell me, why would you schedule a dental exam 30 minutes before you close? I'm super disappointed in their customer service. I've always paid for the extra services, purchased their kid sets of toothbrushes, special toothpaste, and before today, we were always early for every appointment. Everything is paid on time and I've never given any trouble. Even after getting "off the system" I continued to use this dentist regardless of now having the opportunity to go somewhere closer to home and not go to this quest location. Super disappointed.
