I had been a patient here since I was a child. That's just about 20yrs seeing Lori and Dr shimao lol! I have always had good visits so No complaints from me =] now I have children of my own that need dental visits... I tried another office in Pearl city that the pediatrician referred me to, and hated it! After that first visit there, with a dentist that didn't even clean my sons teeth and had horrible smelling breath, I decided to bring my kids to shimao. Ever since coming back and bringing all my 3 kids every 6months, we have been very happy here. I'll be sure to recommend this office to everyone in the area! Dr Shimao has been my dentist for years, since I was in high school. Now that I have kids, they go to see him now as well. My husband now goes to him regularly since honestly, I don't know when the last time he went to visit the dentist! The office has since grown, so sometimes Janet the dental hygienist will see us when it gets really busy. Lori who is the Office Manager, manages a really tight ship so it is very important to make sure you keep your appointments or be in contact with her if you need to reschedule. Text messaged appointments are something that is pretty new, so you can even communicate that way as well. Although very busy, they are a small office and I like the fact that as long as we've known them, they're like family. We always talk story whenever we come in(because a 6 member family with back to back appointments takes time!), and it's just a family friendly office. My parents also come to see Dr Shimao so Lori will sometimes sneak in an appt. reminder for me to relay to my parents! They are a well established business in Ewa Beach and I'm very happy to call them family. read more

1. We called at least 4 dentists offices. This was the most reasonably priced one out of all of them. Seriously, you don't need to pay $150 per month for dental insurance. My entire appointment (exam and 2 X-rays) was just under $90 cash. I'll be back for a cleaning and that will be under $100 too. If you actually care what stuff costs and don't act like a Kardashian on a spending spree, call around before going to the dentist. 2. When I got there I was told it was going to be a "long wait". I was in the dentists chair less than 20 minutes later. Clearly their definition of "long wait" is far off the mark. Most doctors offices are like getting your car titled: standing around for what seems like days on end. This time I actually wanted to wait longer, I just started reading one of the magazines... 3. The receptionist could very well have been a dentist for all I know. She was the single most knowledgeable person on teeth I have ever met. I asked about whitening, brushing, and crown re-shading. Got detailed answers to everything. Before I even saw the doctor I had every one of my dental questions answered. I'm an excessive weirdo about asking detailed questions, so to have someone answer so thoroughly and knowledgeably was a change of pace. 4. The doctor clearly knows what he's doing and doesn't mess around. He was thorough but fast for the exam. Just what you want at a dentists office. I didn't feel like it was the traditional "dentist" experience where you wait around in anticipation for hours only to have some a-hole prod your teeth until you bleed. No, this was actually enjoyable. 5. Everyone was happy and pleasant. Were in Hawaii, so this is to be expected. But it was on-par with the Aloha culture. Very nice experience overall. This place is in Eva Beach, on the second floor end unit in the complex next to Burger King. IMPORTANT: Use Google Maps to get there. Apple maps will try to take you under a highway bridge in a seedy part of Waipahu. Google maps leads you right up to the door. read more

I find it cute, how Lori is the Receptionist and Dr. Shimao is her husband. They are AMAZING people. The wait isn't that long, even if it was I wouldn't mind cause they always play the latest movies on (: 3 Rooms, with 3 different types of movies playing. (: I use to love this place when I was little, The treasure chest was the bomb. I think I cried when my mom said I was too old for a toy when I was in Ilima Intermediate. haha, I was greeted and seated in immediately. X-rays and cleaning took about 45 minutes all together. Dr Shimao, Lori and staff are great. They make you feel more like family than a patient. I highly recommend them to anyone.

Dr Shimao has been our dentist since 2004. He was first recommended to me by a family member to do my emergency root canal since at the time my current dentist was retiring. I had such great service that I was moved to have my 2 young daughters to see if they would do well with them too. They both had good experiences with this new dentist and it turned out to be more economical for us too that I moved all our business to them too. The office manager, Lori is absolutely wonderful. She does a great job in running the office and they bend over backwards to try to accommodate you. They are pretty busy so you will need to remember to schedule your next follow up appointment in advance. If they are unable to accommodate you they do refer you to someone else. read more

I been going here since I was a kid and I like it. They are very friendly and nice. I haven't had any problems here. Waiting room has a tv (always gas a Disney movie on :) ), there's toys and magazines. This place is very clean! I will continue to come here. The front desk lady was super nice and helpful. That was the only good thing about this place. And that they have a kiddie corner. The teeth cleaning I had took about 10 minutes max, and I didn't even feel like they did a good job at CLEANING IT. Then when the dentist came in, he didn't even greet or Introduce himself. Said nothing and didn't even have an expression on his face. If yoi want to be well informed about youe teeth oe general mouth health, he is not going to do that for you.That would be the first and last time I go there. read more

This dentist worked on the WRONG tooth! The filling on my tooth fell out so I called this dentist office to make an appointment and Lori was very helpful and was able to squeeze me in their very busy schedule. The day I went in, I filled out all the forms and informd them my filling came out and pointed out the specific tooth and also I told them I have TMJ and I wore a jaw splint. Afterwards they took me in hurriedly and took xrays of my teeth. The dentist came in and looked over the xrays and inside of my mouth. Within seconds he was done and told me to make an appointment to fix the tooth where the fillings fell off. It felt so rushed & it was so quick I couldn't even tell you what he looks like as he never took off his mask. The day I came back, they promptly took me in the back and sat me in the dentist chair while the dentist assistant made the necessary preparations and pulled up my xrays. Again, I pointed out specifically which tooth I wanted to get done and reminded them again about my jaw splint, a mouth piece that corrects TMJ. The dentist came in soon after that and started working on my tooth. Again, I felt rushed as he darted to his next patient. Afterwards, I went in my car and looked in the mirror to check out my tooth. To my surprise, he did not fix the tooth that I came in for and instead he fixed the one right next to it. I walked back in and told them they had worked on the wrong tooth. The dentist said that he felt the tooth ( I didn't even know or felt that there was something wrong with it) that he worked on, needed more attention than the tooth I specifically came in for. Who is he to make that call and work on it without informing me first? I believe he was too rushed and was not paying attention! And then, he told me to call back and make an appointment so he can fix the original tooth that I came in for. I felt as if he worked on the wrong tooth purposely so that I will need to come back again to fix the tooth that I came in for originally. Because he worked on the wrong tooth, my jaw splint, which cost me $4000, no longer fit in my mouth and now I have to pay to have it redone. I did call back, but not to make another appointment but instead to voice my dissatisfaction and insisted to make a notation of it on my Dental record. I was sad to leave my dentist on the mainland, but D. Mark is excellent. His staff is personable and courteous. Dr. Mark does the cleanings himself, which I find odd, but he's quick and efficient. They also offer text message appointment reminders, which is super helpful. read more

So... after twenty years of not having any dental work done... I decided it was time to be a grown up and come on in. I called the office les than a week ago and here I was a few days later filling out new patient paperwork. Dentist offices are always a little scary so I was a tad nervous coming in but Lori was super awesome. On top of signing me in and giving me the paperwork she was assisting three other patients and dealing with electronic issues caused by the wind and rain... under all that pressure, she made jokes. I loved it lol. I went in and did my X-rays with the nurse I think her name was Joselle or Joelynn but she was super sweet too. Then, the superhero Dr. Shimao came in and got straight to work. I made a few jokes.. he chucked and had some sarcastic retorts which i loves even more lol! He broke down years of build up as well as all the things i have to do to keep my teeth in my face.. brushing and flossing. He also let me know what I need done and Lori let me know how much my insurance would cover. All in all... great experience... I'll post again after my root canal lol read more

I don't know what these reviewers are talking about but this was the worst dentist I have ever experienced! It is a small practice which I don't mind but the dentist does not take the time to talk or listen to you he rushes thru the exam and when you ask questions he acted as if it was a bother as he rolled his eyes to the top of his head. I had to ask Lori the front desk what my treatment plan was because he was in such a rush and was obviously irritated by my questions. He told Lori my treatment plan and she told me my options and costs(forget Hippa privacy) in front of all the patients at the front desk, I was so embarrassed and angry I left out to my car and cried:( I will never go back this is a horrible dentist!!!!!! read more

Very gentle cleaning, were quick and efficient and didn't try to fix stuff that wasn't an issue. My wife had the same feedback when she went here for routine cleaning. Don't expect the Dentist to spend much time with you unless you say you have an issue, but that is probably how it should be. read more

If I could I rate this dentist with no stars I would. I had him as a dentist as a child and when I was a teen, one of my permanent molars did not grow out. He recommended to put a bridge in and that it was cheaper than putting in an implant. As an ignorant trusting teen I went with his recommendation. Bad mistake, as a horrible dentist he failed to inform me of the long term complications that may accompany having a bridge in rather than place an implant (i.e. prone to root canal issues on teeth that are shaved to fit and support the bridge). He shaved the adjacent molars on each side of the missing tooth to affix this recommended bridge and 17 years later, I have been told by several dentists that I have seen, that this was bad dental practice especially on a patient at this age. Now I'm having to fork out almost $10K to fix this huge mistake he made 17 years ago. Additionally, just as some other reviewers have said, he rushes through exams and you rarely see his face talking to you like a good clinician would. Clearly the quality of patient care is on the bottom of his priority list and making a profit is number 1. The great thing about the internet and review sites like yelp, you can read what people really think about services rendered. I hope this review helps others in staying clear of his shady practice and find a dentist that is more qualified to deliver the level of patient care that is at least acceptable. read more
