The main difference (recipe wise) between "Lafayette Coney Island" and the inferior "American…read moreConey" is the chili & onions. American uses boring "sweet onions" while Lafayette uses "SPANISH onions " which have more kick. But the real difference is the Chili, and that's the reason for the split & disagreement. Lafayette has a MEATER chili, meaning they don't skimp on quality ingredients. My best friend and I used to skip school in the 80's just to eat here. And the bathroom is COOL! It's like an adventure! The other main difference is American Coney has open seating because REAL Detroiters don't eat there. When interviewed there's a real character difference between owners. Grace Keros, the 3rd gen owner of American Coney likes to talk sh1t. You don't need to do that when your product is superior. Every interview she gives is sour grapes. Plus REAL Detroiters Coney dogs never put CHEESE on the coneys. American Coney = FAKE Detroit Coneys. Here is a pic of me in my $4Million Batmobile. Batman prefers Lafayette!

The Coney dog ($4) was ordered. It had the classic toppings of bean less chili, yellow mustard, and raw chopped white onions. This was solid. There was a nice bite on the chili with plenty of mustard and onions. The bread was soft and the hot dog was cooked appropriately. The chili was the key as it was hearty and meaty. Will I go back? Yeah, sure.

I'm finally getting off my lazy butt to write this review. It's been a month or so since I bought…read moreover $80 worth of food to carry-out but I felt the public needed to hear about my experience here. First the non-negatives, which is the Coney Island & Bacon-Wrapped Hot Dogs were fine and the Fries were good. Nothing to complain about. Now the bad parts. 1) My mom said that the Pork Chops she ordered were very dry, 2) this restaurant's Cole Slaw is inedible, 3) I ordered the 21 Shrimp which I use to enjoy, but now, I cannot recommend. It seems they're using a cheaper product now. Finally the worse part. I ordered 2 pieces of Blazo's pie, Lemon Merengue and Coconut Cream. The pies tasted like they'd been sitting around for a very long time and I have very good evidence to prove that assumption. The Merengue topping looked like something that might come out of your nose. It had completely broken down into this grayish goop that was horrific to look at. I mean it wasn't even white anymore. Also, the pieces were so tiny. Now scariest thing about this pie encounter is that the young lady working there cut the pie pieces and put them in containers for me so she had to see the Merengue's condition and the portion size. If you've made it this far I'm sure you know what I'm about to say, are you ready for it, "I'll never go to this restaurant again".

The Coney dogs I had were awesome and so was the chili fries. The service was great And there is a…read morelot of ways to get a hot dog. The menu has a good variety to pick from. The food was ready really fast for such a quiet little place. I do not under stand the low ratings but this is Yelp I guess. They have a drive thru also. I definitely will be back.
