Ran into this hidden gem on Michigan Ave. I'm sure I've driven by it dozens of times and just never noticed. It's a burger joint inside of a building that was likely built close to 100 years ago. Maybe it isn't that old, but it sure does feel like it. It's as if I went back in time to see how people ate during the 50s/60s. They have a very simple menu composed of burgers, fries, hot dogs and other comfort foods you would expect. They call their burgers "squeeze" on the menu, but I never thought to ask the nice waitress why that was the case. I definitely enjoyed my burger and curly fries, and so did my son, but I wouldn't say either we're outstanding. If you wanna come here just for the experience alone, I recommend it. But food is just okay unless you grew up on it and have a strong relationship with the people who come here as regulars. read more

Feeling a craving for a cheeseburger, but not wanting a run-of-the-mill sandwich from Burger King or McDonald's, I decided to pay "Roy's Squeeze Inn" a visit and treat myself to a "much better burger" experience. Roy's, is a throw back to a time when small "mom and pop" hamburger stands were commonplace across the American landscape, especially on the old two-lane U.S. Highway System. Sadly, in today's fast paced world, chain restaurants have proliferated across the nation, and the food they serve all tastes the same. Roy's is located on what is today the Business routing of US-12, or locally known as Michigan Avenue in a building that was built as the "Donut Kitchen" in the early 1950s. This was a great place for coffee and homemade donuts, which was the number one hangout for local police officers on Ypsilanti's Historic East Side back in the day. It was always interesting to drive down Michigan Ave, and check out all the police vehicles parked at this building which, amazingly enough back in those days was never robbed by criminals. I decided to order the "Quarter Squeeze Cheese," and it was out of this world amazingly delicious, with the potato wedges. The young lady at the counter was absolutely fantastic and provided great service. The nostalgic vibe from this place is priceless, and is like being transported in a time machine back to an era when nobody was worried about counting calories. Okay so.. I really love this place. We come weekly, sometimes twice a week if my kids convince me. Both of my kids have known this place their entire lives and they love coming. The food is ALWAYS great. Now, I'd say 92% of the customers are regulars and we all suck it up and deal with the cash only payment & no ranch. And now we gotta tolerate the no fountain drinks. I gotta listen to my almost 5 year old fuss because he wants lemonade and doesn't understand that the machine we can all see with our eyes doesn't work and has no plan to be fixed. Coke is a little harsh to give a 4 year old ya know? Unfortunately, the tap water just doesn't cut it for him. I won't disrespect the business, the cook and the waitresses by giving Roy's less than 5 stars for something THEY can't control. Almost every employee this place sees gives it more than 100% and to be completely honest, the owner doesn't deserve half of that. Owner- can you fix or replace the pop machine and respect the fact that A LOT of people have been coming to this business for DECADES now and were LOYAL. We, as your customers, deserve some fountain pop. This is a little silly. It really can't be that expensive to fix that pop machine. Will it be a problem if we come in with soda purchased elsewhere? Because I'll surely stop at McDonald's before the ATM and grab me a lil Dr. Pepper ya know. OH and let me not forget!!!! The same price for a can of pop compared to fountain pop?? Come on ugh. I have been coming to Roys for 20 years. NEVER have I been disrespected or called a liar as I was today by the cook and the waitress wasn't answering the phone. Called 8 times, with the 6th call being picked up and hung up. The new service you have in this store is NOT customer service based and is absolutely ridiculous to call someone a liar when they have the 8 out going calls to this location on their phone! And then to say "we get to tge phone when we get to the phone" no when someone calls to place an order you answer the phone unless helping a customer there was 1 customer outside before me and NO ONE inside and no employee for a LEAST 3 minutes when I walked in. I'm 68 years old and this was the best hamburger I've had since I was a kid. What really impressed me was the hamburger was seasoned with salt and pepper when it was assembled, also the 1/4 squeze is just the right size for a burger. On of my complaints about most burger places is there burgers are just too big. A four oz. burger patty is just right for the meat / condiment ratio. If you want more meat just order two. I had seen a great interview on the Michigan PBS program "Under the Radar". I had the Quarter Squeeze Burger and fried mushrooms! Tried and true is this place right here. Cash only and probably top 3 burger places to go to in Ypsilanti. If you call in, they do bring it to your car but you can go in and eat/order as well. They have 3 sizes for burgers (big squeeze=1/2 lb, quarter squeeze=1/4 lb, and little squeeze=sliders). A bunch of sides here but I always go seasoned wedges or curly fries. I had been planning on doing something perhaps a little fancier and yet we ended up at this little circular stand off Michigan Avenue. From the outside it looks almost abandoned based on the lack of cars surrounding it. Inside, however, is a great burger joint with an awesome circular counter, and tasty ass burgers. I ordered the 1/4 cheese squeeze and really enjoyed it. The burger is slider-esque in that it's pretty thin and not a uniform patty. It's pretty peppery but the cheese and the toppings do tone it down. I'm usually a meat, cheese, ketchup and mustard kinda gal but this squeeze comes with lettuce, tomato, and mayo as well and it was great. It had been a while since I'd had a burger with all those toppings and I forgot how good it can be. Also had a side of curly fries which were quite fab. But how can you go wrong with curly fries? They were fresh out of the frier and a little too hot to eat right away so I had to painfully wait a few minutes before I got to enjoy those crispy little suckers. I also tried the fried mushrooms which were deep fried goodness. Add a rootbeer and you've got a fantastic, cheap meal. It may not be fancy but it's damn good. So we went and picked up some of these fantastic burgers. The resterant is pretty small, you can definitely tell it's been around for a very long time! Especially with the CASH ONLY sign on the door. One person takes orders, and I saw one cook. Based on the others who came in, I could tell loyal Ypsi locals have been coming here for years. This place was very charming. It's round and only had a circular counter with about 7 stools- that's all the seating there is. I was getting carryout, but I'd like to dine in sometime just for the experience! The food was good but not great. I'd honestly probably give 3.5 stars, but rounded up for the charm factor. The burgers were solid but still not as good as Telway (NOTHING IS, though), and the coleslaw wasn't great. I loved that they have pulled pork though, it's on my list to try next time! read more

Went there last night around 8 pm for the wife and i and got 2 big squeezes with cheese and curly fries. My wife experienced diarrhea within 4 hours of eating. At 5am in the morning, I was vomiting violently had uncontrollable diarrhea, the shakes and stomach pain. I called Washentnaw county health department to report. I don't know what happened to them and their standards of being clean, but you only have 1 time to give me food poison for me to never come back. read more

The clintele who weren't threatening her seemed to be hitting on her instead. She took it all in stride and it made for a night of quality entertainment. The food is old school. The 1/2 lb. big squeeze with cheese burgers are cooked up so they are an odd combo of little crunchy edges and juicy middle, delicious really but different. Hand formed for sure and cooked on a griddle that has probably cooked burgers for longer than I have been eating them. They practically fall apart as you munch. They are dressed with mayo, diced onion, shredded lettuce and a tomato slice. I added ketchup and mustard from the squeeze bottles and liked the end result a lot. The wedges are excellent, not too wide a cut but crisp with a good potato middle. Yum, perfection. My husband hogged them so next time we will get the larger side to split. The off brand ketchup sucks but the wedges are happiness. The onion rings are standard but still crunchy and tasty. This was recommended by an Out of Town friend. I had never heard of the place but was ok with trying it out. We hopped in the car and put in the place on the Nav. It was not the best looking place and not the greatest looking neighborhood. However, I'm cool with that because good food does not always have to be in the greatest of locations. We went into the place and sat at the old fashion counter. We ordered the Big Cheese Squeeze and Onion Rings. We than went home and unwrapped our meal. The grease was seeping through the bags....Promising. Maybe the hype and expectation was over and beyond but The burgers were just OK. Nothing to write home about or have the feeling of "Oh, I can't wait to get back." My friend agreed that there was more of an expectation.
