I came in just to browse as I was waiting for my car to be repaired down the street. I'm a hobbyist and have kept reptiles, fish, and other invertebrates for several years. Upon entering the business you're immediately hit with multiple signs and chains saying "Do not enter" or something similar. I saw who I assume is the shop owner, I said "Hello!" Only to be ignored. Whatever, maybe he was busy or having a bad day. The isles are extremely thin and crowded. There's a couple fish tanks, they look nice but lots of Algae growth. Definitely in need of a good cleaning or a clean up crew. I continued to wander in search of just anything interesting to maybe make a purchase. Constantly being met with just a million bags of dog or cat food, a couple small bags of reptisoil and other reptile substrates, and that's it. After stepping further into the store you're taken by the smell of bird poop and old fish tank water. It's pretty overwhelming if you've never smelled it. After turning the last corner you're met with more chains blocking entry, and then you see it. Hundreds of wire bird cages, all stacked as high as possible, you understand where all the bird chatter is coming from. It's not necessarily messy, but there's so many stacked in wire cages that it just can't be healthy for the birds. After trying to see if I could get a look at anything but all the animals were blocked off, I turned around and left. For starters, this is not an exotic animal store as the sign states. It's a fish and bird store. None of which are hard to find. Next, I have some concerns about how the birds are being kept, It's not right. I have been buying from RJ for almost 10 years now, and there is no other place I go unless he's out of something, but that is very rare. His care of those critters he keeps, and the wonderful birds that are so beautiful and majestic to see every time I visit, is worth the trip! POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE & UNREASONABLE RETURN POLICY: On May 16th 2025 I made a purchase of a light bulb fixture for my bearded dragon. I had a very disappointing experience after making my purchase. I discovered it wasn't working correctly the same day when I returned to the store the same day to address the issue the owner was on the phone and did not give me the time of day leaving me waiting over 10 minutes despite my busy schedule to make matters worse, the store enforces an extremely restrictive 24 hour term policy, which is unheard of in most reputable pet stores. I looked this up and in the past 30 years most U.S stores ( including pet stores) have ranged from 14-90 days. Not only is this return policy rare it is reserved for exceptional circumstances ( live animals, perishable foods or deep discount "final sale" items. Even "final sale" or "as is" items typically require clear up front notification, and reputable stores make exceptions for defective products. I'm all for supporting small businesses and go out my way to avoid big retailers but this was beyond unsatisfactory. read more

This place moved from Broadway in Lemon Grove to the new location by the railroad tracks at 3338 Main Street, Lemon Grove, CA 91945. I thought it was a new business so went to check it out b/c I have a lot of pets. Wow, I was assaulted by the horrible smell that hit me as soon as I entered. It is filthy. The fish tanks were dirty and had lots of algae. I don't understand how this person is still allowed to run a business with animals that are kept in such deplorable conditions. I got out of there as soon as I could b/c of the terrible smell of unkept animals. I would definitely avoid and NOT give this place any business. This man is a hard working man and is really what America is about and I shop there for my aquarium supply and ever since I've found out about this area I started seeing less petco and more lemon grove pets, saved me money and petco is full on scam while I get higher quality fish and food. The most horrifying thing I've seen. Dead fish swinging in opaque tanks. Birds with no food and black water stacked in tiny cages. Cages you couldn't reach if you wanted they went so far back. I stopped in today because I'm a parrot owner and thought this would be closer for supplies than my usual spot. This place is a nightmare. The birds have not been hand raised, the cages are disgusting, not a single one had clean water or fresh food! They only had sunflowers and seed which is a horrible diet for birds and clearly had not even been changed in awhile. The fish tanks were also dirty and the store smelled awful. I will never buy here again. Left side of shop is filthy with birds. Right side of shop is unorganized, cluttered, and also filthy reptile and rat enclosures. Back of the shop next to a trash can full of flies and other pests is the tarantulas and scorpions. I bought two tarantulas less than 15 days ago, a T.Albopilosus (Curlyhair Tarantula) & a A.Seemanni (Striped Knee Tarantula) and sadly it was missing a leg and looked severely dehydrated before I bought it. The A.Seemanni had a seizure in its enclosure 2 days before it started to go into a death curl, it was so sad. We gave it a burrow and enough moisture. We also tried to feed it twice, and it rejected the feeders. I'm glad the other tarantula that I bought lived and is thriving because it was a gift and it was also priced at a high $65 for a juvenile curlyhair, that's super expensive compared to other shops in SD. The A.Seemanni was also priced high as hell at $55 and a juvenile too. Might I add I had to actually squeeze in to the back of the shop, trash and flies everywhere, the smell is rough, and I legit will never be back here and will keep wondering why this place is still open. When I called to get a refund the owner was rude, and first said I should've came back in 2 days to return, and then said there's no returns. That makes no sense! You can't tell if a spider is sick or about to die with just 2 days of purchase. This shop is bottom tier, overpriced, and I legit tried to be patient on the phone to get a fair refund but he was unreasonable and a jerk. read more

To start off, if I could give this place -5 stars I would. I also found out from a family friend that HE IS NOT SUPPOSE TO BE OPEN!!! HIS BUSINESS WAS ALREADY SHUT DOWN. HE CHOSE TO REOPEN KNOWING HE NEGLECTS ALL THESE ANIMALS. I originally came here because my boyfriend & my family wanted to see the cats and the birds. I should've read the reviews before coming here. Seeing the place outside already seems sketchy and the smell gets worse when you step inside. I didn't take any pictures or videos due to me trying to respect the owner, but now I regret not having any footage. The store is not even close to being sanitary. It is so obvious that these animals are all being neglected with no food, no fresh water and living in their own feces. The fish tanks had water that was so dirty that we couldn't even tell if the fish was alive or not. Not to even forget that there was a big cage full of rats behind his store and no food or water in sight. The cage was so small that they were laying on top of one another. The birds are clearly in distress and should be sent somewhere they would be truly taken care of. Overall, it's sad to see how these animals failed to being taken care of and that his business continues to be open. If this man doesn't even care about his own animals, what makes you think he cares about your loving pets? He'll sell anything to you to benefit himself. My first time coming in looking for bedding for my Guinea pig and what I saw was just horrible. immediately noticed the horrible smell I decided to take a look around and it just got worse as I walked in further towards the back. I went in this place the other day, and it was really quite disgusting. It looks more like an animal hoarder house than a pet shop that should be open to the public. Smells like rat feces and dead animals. There's years of clutter shoved into the pathways and aisles of the store. The animal cages were tiny, DISGUSTING, and the animals looked absolutely miserable. One of the few business id give 0 stars. They tried to sell me two female birds once and hid the dna results from my parrot to convince me to buy a mate for it they had on stock. I found an injured baby mouse 2 days ago as a gift from my cat. I thought he could use company of another mouse while he was recovering. They say baby mice have a hard time staying warm and my heating pad only stays warm for an hour at a time, then you have to re-set it. Knowing myself sleeping in hours at a time and picking up his cold little body out of the cold heating pad, I decided to get another mouse for that reason. I was greeted by his cat and talking parrot who said "Hello." They are very friendly, the cat let me pet him. I saw the guy working there and told him my story, and he asked me if I needed anything for them. I bought the whole mouse set up for him and another male mouse, food, water bottle, cage, exercise wheel so he's all set! It's a little bit more expensive than Wal-mart, but I would much rather support our mom & pa stores any day. I'll be back again if I need anything more. read more

I love this local, family owned business. The staff are super friendly & helpful, they always have what I need for my chickens and cats plus lots of fun things I don't need but have fun shopping for. Carts to carry heavy feed bags are throughout the shop and there's a shop cat who loves to peek over at what you're doing & say hello. I even got some baby chick here that are great layers. Plus they take all forms of payment and even open a little early if I'm outside. Super grateful for this gem. read more
