I love this local, family owned business. The staff are super friendly & helpful, they always have what I need for my chickens and cats plus lots of fun things I don't need but have fun shopping for. Carts to carry heavy feed bags are throughout the shop and there's a shop cat who loves to peek over at what you're doing & say hello. I even got some baby chick here that are great layers. Plus they take all forms of payment and even open a little early if I'm outside. Super grateful for this gem. read more

Just went here and had a bad experience. I was looking for exotic crayfish and I was visiting various pet stores. As I was entering the store I noticed a bad smell of feces. I continued to check things out. Noticed a guy cleaning bird trays in the back. I said I was looking for crayfish. He immediately said they are out of season and he said come back in a few months. Ok but I just bought 4 in the last week from other pet stores. Im sure their is no season for crayfish. Anyways I try to walk around to explore what this store has. The area is chained off for viewing. I guess it's to deter theft. But it also loses customers interest to buy also. Not a welcoming place to shop. I then ask the man if he has any African bulldogs. He says they are illegal in California. I told him Pyxie frogs which are African bulldogs. He says they are illegal. I inform him I have a few. He questions where I bought them? I tell him from various places. I then ask him if he has any Pac man frogs. He says yes he does. So I look at him expecting him to show them. He just continues cleaning the cages. I felt a negative energy so I decided to just walk out. This place has some serious issues. Also going back to the African Bulldogs, I'm sure they are not illegal to sell in California. After leaving I checked out the reviews on Yelp and most had the same issues. I am all about helping small business places, but this place really sucks. I will not return because they have other great small business pet stores that will get my business and support. I'm not trying to get this business shut down. Hopefully the owner reads the reviews and make efforts to improve his business. Also the place is cluttered and could use a serious cleaning among other issues. It smells like the goat/sheep petting area in the zoo here.. it's really dirty and unsanitary, but other than that, the person who worked there was really nice, and had a sense of humor. I came here for their last hamster which was a long hair Syrian hamster. I also purchased some hamster food, and that's pretty much it. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you're prone to getting sick. Other than that, it's manageable. read more

This is the worst pet store I've ever been too this place needs to be shut down immediately, the owner does not take care of these birds they look sick and stressed out from small cages or to many birds in small cages. Even the big birds look stressed they are plucking their feathers out and it looks so cluttered and every where you will see signs of no taking pictures I'm sure he doesn't want people taking them because of how he takes care of them is inhuman. Went into the store to look around, first thing I noticed was a strong smell of urine and flies EVERYWHERE. I noticed two birds near the entrance, both of them were scratching their heads and had bald patches. They were clearly uncomfortable. Most beautiful selection of African cichlids tropical fish I have seen. The store is well maintained by an expert on pets. He was giving informed advice to another satisfied customer. Birds were chirping and socializing with each other and humans. A gentleman in the store had one on his shoulder. Well trained and cared for. I will be returning to check out the next shipment of tropical fish. I got a bag of feeder goldfish for my fish pond. 50 for $10.00. I did notice a dead one floating in the tank. Oh well. One loss in a thousand is a good batting average. read more

If it can be helped, please do not come here. It is extremely stuffy and hot, and the animal cages are tiny. I came in, looking for a chinchilla cage, and was in complete shock to see 8 chinchillas in to a cage. Not only did they not have enough space, the flooring was wired without any bedding which is extremely harmful for small pets and can give them arthritis. Chinchillas also need regular exercise, but it seemed they were left in there for long lengths of time. The extreme heat was also a problem for chinchillas can die at anything above 75 degrees. The kittens were also in their cages that barely seemed ventilated and were laying next to their own feces. It seemed as though they never got out of their cages. All in all, I do not believe this place is suitable for caring for animals. I would think that someone who owned a pet store would love pets and know a lot about accurate pet care, however the owner here seems extremely disengaged and his lack of the love and care towards animals is completely apparent. I would give negative stars if I could. Please do not support businesses like this who do not care for the animals. read more

Screw this place! If you think that Petco and Petsmart are bad you're gonna hate this place! First off this place reeks to high hell. You can smell the odor of dying animals from almost 30 feet away! If you live in Lemon Grove you know to hold your breath when you walk past this place. Also this place is expensive! He wanted to charge me almost $1 for a single small feeder fish! I only feel bad for the animals living in this prison because he obviously doesn't care about their well being and it shows because the one of the few times I went in there I would always see a dead animal just rotting away in its cage. Yeah... No. That smell and the huge ass flies that greet you at the front. I was curious to see what they sold as I have cats and had crabs along with various fish in the past but Big Al's in Brampton never smelled like that even when they started selling rabbits and other small furry animals. I saw a (ragdoll?) cat that seemed pretty healthy. It wasn't caged so maybe that one wasn't for sale. That whole place needs some serious disinfectant though, that air quality can't be good for the birds or whatever else is there. This store has a lot going on, I've been going there for pet supplies for at least 5 years, they are very competitive on some things and like any other place there is things you can find a better price on. I like them for the variety of food and animals. They have everything from birds to reptiles to amphibians. The animals look well cared for and his parrots usually talks when my kids walk in. The owner is really nice and informative. If he doesn't have it , he can get it for you. He sells turtle and koi food for really good prices better than most pet stores by far in San Diego. He has a good selection of dog and cat food as well. He always has a steady line of customers so he must be doing something right. I would give him a 4 stars but the place does need a spring cleaning. I would recommend this place for many products and services. read more

I am horrified by this store. It seemed ok from the front, but as I walked further back it became very dismal. Extremely dirty fish tanks, very crowded cages, and the worst was seeing a bunch of chinchillas that had no bedding and a chicken laying on it's side. The Cage was so small it wasn't able to fully stand. These animals are suffering-imagine spending your whole life naked on top a a chain link fence. You know something is wrong with you aren't allowed to take pictured. On person who worked there was in a fog & didn't even step aside for me to walk past in the hall- the other wouldn't answer my questions and ran to hide in the back. My boyfriend and I went to Barry's sports shop in Lemon Grove to pick up his glove today and there is a small pet shop directly across the street that I have felt drawn to since I first saw it. Today we decided to go inside. An arrogant Asian man sat in his chair while we looked around. We found a narrow aisle containing tiny boxes of what looked like dead dragons. They were skin a bones, three of them couldn't open their eyes because their eyelids were crusted together, and they all had half of their tails left. They were barely breathing. Three large dragons were in a slightly larger container, looking worse than the juiciest, and they looked like awful lifeless statues. They were all clearly neglected of water and their food bowls were full of moldy food. Then the man has the nerve to ask for $69 for the small dragon that had what looked like mites. The only movement it made was when the bug crawled on it and he twitched. There was a gecko with a massive swollen ball for a tail as well. It broke my heart. I wanted to buy them but there's no way in hell that man is getting my money. I want that store shut down. I need help. I need to know what steps I can take to free those neglected animals. I cried on the way home and was at a complete loss of words the entire ride. I am disgusted beyond believe and I cannot let that man get away with trying to sell dying animals. I called the reptile and reef store on Main Street and he said unfortunately animal control and shelters don't treat issues of neglect with reptiles like they do cats and dogs. If I could give negative stars, I would. As soon as I walked through the doors a horrible stench hit me like a brick wall. Even breathing through my mouth was hard because I felt like I could taste the filth. All the reptiles looked sick and we're all in dirty cages. All the fish in the back were mislabeled and over priced (even with most of them looking half dead. The cats were stuck in small cages. Basically everything in this store was horrible. It honestly made me cringe. This store was so bad that I down loaded my Yelp app after deleting it so I could warn people about how terrible this is. The owner is super rude and ignorant as well. This place feels- and smells- like death. Honestly, I felt like I had entered into a nightmare. The shop manager completely ignored me, but honestly that is the least of my concern for this place. If the animals were well treated, then a rude employee would be no issue. But, the animals are obviously being treated horribly. They are all cramped into tiny cages- there were several parakeets in one cage that would hardly be big enough for just one parakeet. You could harly see through the fish tanks, and even when I neared the glass the fish just layed there lazily. This pathetic merchant and his business is a DISGRACE TO THE CITY OF LEMON GROVE, CALIFORNIA and A PRISON FOR THE ANIMALS TRAPPED IN IT. "LEMON GROVE PETS" - it is a prison for the innocent living beings HELD AGAINST THEIR WILL in captivity in this grim RETAILER DUNGEON. It is the farthest from a place that contains animals that are taken care of well and cherished as members of the family. The animals are treated as merchandise without any demonstration of being cared for well or given constant loving attention. The retail space is small and crammed. The one aspect that is immediately and highly noticed, even when walking on the sidewalk in front of the doors is the rotten stench odor like a decaying corpse. The doors are ALWAYS OPEN to minimize the stench, yet it is embedded from years into the interior structure that this space would have to be torn down to remove the horrible odor. The animals are kept in small wire cages with no comfortable floor space, especially a necessity for the kittens in there recently on a friends phone photos and one myself 4 years ago. The same for the guinea pigs, I saw this summer. Their cage was on the floor under 2 other cages with 2 cockatoos above them and a cage on top of that crowded with about 2 dozen green parakeets. These sentient beings held as prisoners were only treated like merchandise stacked up like freight being shipped somewhere. The cage the 2 guinea pigs were in was not high enough for them to stand on their hind legs and stetch. The 2 times (4 years apart) I was in there I saw no fish. I saw a kitten, chickens next to the kitten and mice and rats next to the kitten and chickens. My friend saw fish last week. She stated the presence of the odor throughout the store and the water in the tanks was FLITHY. She saw 2 kittens - a white one and a dark one, in separate wire cages. I saw no kitten this past summer, but saw an undernourished one 4 years ago. When I asked about the kitten, the owner thought I was interested in "purchasing" his "merchandise", until I asked more questions about the container, etc. That is when he told me to leave. I, like others that went in and submitted their reviews here, said they felt so bad for the animals that they wanted to pay and remove them from this horrible dungeon environment that is not even clean and sanitary. I saw a section near the front door on the right side with dirty, dusty boxes stacked up to 4 feet. They had been there long enough to have a visible layer of dust AND COBWEBS. This past week walking by I saw that the owner has made a bit of an interior change making it look more visually appealing. The basic and overall odor and cargo feature continues to exit. Many have wondered why no authority has shut this place down and removed the animals to a better environment and care. I have been at the Lemon Grove city council meeting and mentioned this disgusting disgraceful retail unit right on the main street of Lemon Grove right across the street from the post office. Not one on the council has come forward to take any interest in these animals in there and to close this hell the animals are trapped in down. I continue to educate the members and mayor every month on animal rights and welfare. Anyone interested in rescuing the innocent beings in this horrible place, please attend the Lemon Grove city council meeting (twice a month on Tuesday evenings at 6PM) and contribute your allowed 3 minutes of "Public Comments" at the podium to close this dungeon. I care strongly for these animals. THEY NEED TO BE REMOVED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. They deserve better accommodations and to be removed to a wholesome clean and sanitary place to live. The owner of this place does not deserve to have any animals in a commercial manner ever again. Finally, some seem to suspect there could be something else transpiring at this location and the "pet store" is a front. Otherwise, what is the owner so paranoid of people that walk in there and ask questions about the conditions of the animals, is not friendly at all and tells people to leave, takes photos of them and threatens to call the police. None of the reputable national pet stores as Petco and Petsmart would never treat a customer in this unbecoming type of manner. This "business" is a disgrace to the City of Lemon Grove. I do not understand how this owner can even stand the repulsive odor himself, for all the hours seven days a week. What is wrong with this picture? Let's find out what is with this merchant and his inventory. The front window looks neglected with signs in old worn out-of-date condition that gives a questionable impression of this merchant and his business. I am shocked to read some of these other reviews. My experience was quite the opposite. The owner was very nice, helpful and very loving and caring for his animals. I've seen him let the animals out for exercise and I have noticed that he alternates the parrots in the front. It is a bit cramped but that is because of his large selection of animals and supplies. I'm in there quite often and never seen the cages as if they have never seen the cages as if they have been neglected. I have always had a hard time finding chicken feed and this pet shop has a large variety of them to choose from. I would recommend this pet shop to anyone. Owner has great knowledge of pets and is a pleasure to be around! He takes great care of his animals and has raised them since he was a child. He is always very fair and negotiable on prices with me and hand feeds/raises every animal in the store. I have bought 2 Holland Lop rabbits from him and they are some of the most calm, docile, well-behaved bunnies I have ever owned. They behave like little puppies and are very loveable. Stumbled upon this pet store right in downtown Lemon Grove after stopping in at Game Zone next door. Immediately you walk in to absolutely clutter and the scent of incense in the air. As you make your way through the cramped maze of caged birds, some of whom look un-healthy and others petrified or missing feathers or have abscesses around their eyes, you enter a mix of aquariums on one side past the cashier (and the smell was awful...when was the last time those fish had clean water???) and the reptiles and amphibians to the right, half of whom were unhealthy looking, sagging skin and loss of color. Then you walk down the aisle in between huge shelves filled with miscellaneous pet supplies in no particular order to a crowded mass of bird cages filled with smaller birds. The whole area was dark from lack of light and these poor birds were freaking out hysterically. Across the aisle there were two cages with these adorable yet petrified kittens in them directly next to a cage with several chickens in them. There were signs on some cages stating what the animals were but not on all, and nothing about their source, price or health or anything. The only other signs that existed where ones telling customers that photographs were not allowed in the store. And one look inside this store and one look to see how poor these animals were being cared for shows why. This place is a health code violation and animal abuse violation. Aside from being a total pack rat hoarder nightmare in there, there are animals stacked on one another with no light. Half the animals were cold, the chinchillas were all huddled up together in a mass to stay warm and it was the middle of the day. It was the most depressing experience, and I thought Pet Market on College and El Cajon Blvd was bad...this was worse. read more

Went to the this place the other day and i honestly cant belive this store is in business due to the conditions inside and the unfair treatment of the animals. As i was looking forward to seeing the inside my mind was changed when i was greeted with an overwhelming smell but the second you walk in thers two large parrots, one of these parrots was laying on its side and looked very depressed, purchase due to the fact this 1ft and a half tall parrot is in a cage way too small making it unable to flap its wings or even stand in copurchasemfort. As you walk deeper into the hallway the space becomes limited and very cramped and the smell gets worse when you though it couldent...thers a small section of fish and then another section of birds, still feeling horrible for the parrot in the front i dident think it would reveal more very very questional treatment that i dont agree with, ther were bird cages pretty much on the floor with cages on top and the lighting dosent help at all to brighten up the cages on the bottom, the cages are stacked up like boxes. As i moved through the birds back to the hall i noticed the rest of the store was blocked off with a chain and some shelves to ensure a customer could not move through wich was extremely odd, i hope ther wasent a dead animal... clearly they were more animals for purchase, i was able to see a cat and then another cage of parokeets basicly over populated for its size, after reading the reviews i assume it was because of those reasons. i was now paying much much more attention to the conditions and realizing this whole establishment needs some serious help it was like walking through a mummys pyramid for the amount of cobwebs and old spider webs ther were - DO NOT SUPPORT THIS PLACE UNLESS YOU ARE RESCUING AN ANIMAL- This place needs a serious inspection and the owner needs to re-evaluate his business practice. The birds and other animals i encountered here looked sadly unhealthy and could really use some genuine love. I recomend evryone to visit this store to experience the level of conditions and poor quality treatment.
