I have probably been to Paw Country about eight times so far. It is a small pet supply store in a strip mall in the Lake Murray area of La Mesa. It happens to be quite close to my office, so it is a convenient place for me to shop from time to time. At first I was very impressed by the knowledge of the staff about the varieties of dog food and treats. I will say that the knowledge level has really varied depending who was working there on a given day. I will say, that the staff has always been friendly. As I usually buy my regular dog food closer to my home, Paw Country has been a place to find some more unique birthday or holiday gifts for my dog or friends' dogs. I have found some great toys, party hats and treats there. As it is small, the selection really can vary. I had been so impressed by the selection of cute doggie birthday cakes that I was excited to pick up on for my girl's birthday, but on that day, they were out. I was super disappointed. Other times, I had been really happy with some of the sales, and got some great seasonal treats and toys at discounted prices. Paw Country's staff is super helpful. Whenever I call with questions about what they have in stock, they are so quick to answer the phone. If they're unsure about item availability, they are also super helpful about double checking what they have (e.g. in new shipments just received). The last few times I visited, Ernie helped me. He let me know that the food in the store is organized by pricing- with the most expensive food in the front and the more cost effective ones in the back. I was really glad they had such high quality puppy food for such a great price of $15. They also have a large selection of food supplements like goat milk. I let Ernie know about a concern about my dog's constipation, and he recommended ANSWERS Pet Food Goat Milk with probiotics. We are mixing a little of it with her food now to see if it helps. They also have a large selection of mesh dog harnesses and leashes, along with treats, shampoos, and supplements. We got a size M harness for my puppy and I was a bit unsure if it would fit her. It was $15- a much better price than at Petco down the road. Ernie let me know that I can easily exchange the harness for another size if needed. I started going to the Holistic Hound when the pet recall started and I LOVE it. I have to tell you we live in La Mesa and out here in East County it's not as easy to find pet shops that sell RAW food and I started feeding this my doggie I figured out that Petco/Petsmart are not the places you would find this food. When I found this store it was a gem for me because I can grab food on the way home and it's not such a big deal. Also, if you order over then $50 off the website shipping is free. This store is pretty straight forward they have food, treats and toys. They also know alot of this stuff and they will take the time to talk to you if you have any questions. What I really appreciate, though, is you can find super premium and healthy foods and snacks for dogs and cats. Yes, it's expensive. All pet stores like this are. Do I wish they'd bring their prices down? Of course. Though I will say that I compared the cost of SmallBatch Chicken raw diet at Paw Country to Kahoots, and Paw Country came in slightly lower. They also carry raw marrow bones, bone broth, and other nutritious but hard-to-find supplemental foods. If you feed your animals Iams or Purina, this is NOT your store. But if you're into feeding raw diets, or even TOTW and other high-end brands, Paw Country is right up your alley! read more

Location - La Mesa isn't really convenient to Paradise Hills, but they're worth the trek. It's nice to be able to park right in front when you're buying two giant bags of dog food and one giant bag of cat food, though... Selection - Paw County is a specialty shop. If you're looking for high-protein, raw, grain-free, or if your pet has any special allergy restrictions, this is the place to go. They also have a great selection of toys, chews, treats, leashes and pet hygiene products. Staff - The people that work here are awesome. They ask questions about your pets and help you find the right products, instead of leaving you to wander the store and make your best guess. The dog food is pricey but only because your paying for high quality foods with no fillers and typical allergens that you'll find in your typical ordinary dog foods. At this store you will find a variety of vitamins and supplements for your pets. My favorite part about this place are the knowledgeable employees, they really know their stuff. From the food to potty training they can always offer you sound advice. If you shop here often make sure to sign-up for their frequent buyer card (a card they keep at the register to keep track of your purchases). Once you get to a certain dollar amount spent you can get a discount on your purchases. If you sign-up to receive their emails they will keep you up to date on any events they're having and sometimes a discount coupon for your purchases. I was very suprised to find a pet store like this in east county, and even more suprised to find it right in my own neighborhood. I was tentative coming in here because when I looked it up online it looked like it was primarily for dogs. I have a 17 year old siamese cat that was throwing up after eating. She had eaten fancy feast her whole life, and I thought it was time for a diet change. I never knew how crappy that food was for her! If I am vegan and trying to be healthy...why shouldnt my cat?
