Can't go wrong with a fresh hot Malasada!! There's never been a crowd when I've been by between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., I love the custard and cinnamon sugar. COLD MALASADAS. The trucks no longer serve it hot, all of them. The only time it is hot is when they are EXTREMELY busy. Normally they fry it, leave it sitting, it gets cold, and serve it. Managers need to monitor their workers. The only one that guarantees it is served hot is the store in Waikiki. I don't buy much anymore, 9 pot of the last ten time i bought, it was like it was sitting for a while. BIG difference between a freshly cooked one and a semi warm or just cold. Don't go to the trucks if you really want to taste the Original way it was meant to be eaten. This is the first time I've had malasadas and the ones from Leonard's are absolutely delicious. The malasadas here are quite possibly the fluffiest doughnuts I've ever had in my life, not to mention they were not oily tasting at all. Though I personally not a fan of cream filled doughnuts, my wife passed on to me that she really enjoyed the custard and haupia ones. For $2.25 a piece, I thought these were very appropriately priced for the quality. I only ordered four in total so I did not receive my doughnuts in a box -- only a pink plastic bag. If you're snorkeling nearby at Haunauma Bay, definitely make a stop here for a sweet treat after a tiring day out in the ocean. The Food: The Malasadas are almost like a big fluffy donut that either has some filling or no filling, covered in cinnamon. We went with some originals with no filling and some with a custard filling and coconut filling. The originals were hands down the best, each bite was soft and fluffy and the sugar added a nice sweet flavor. The Service: Malasadas are cooked to order so when we ordered, it took a bit for us to get, but it was worth the wait. The staff were friendly as well. We had told our visiting friends how good the malasada are - but they were very mediocre - not very hot and with very, very little sugar (check out recent photos taken by others) - so very disappointing and embarrassing TBH! I heard a lot about this place before my trip and was really excited when I saw all the positive reviews. We found the truck in a parking lot and there was a short line but it moves fairly quickly. After ordering it took us maybe 5-7 mins to receive our order. Only downside was that it was raining and there was no shelter/coverage while waiting. We ordered the custard filled malasadas with cinnamon sugar. The malasada itself was super fresh and pipping hot when we received it. Perfectly crispy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. The custard had a slightly coconutty flavor to it which I wasn't a fan of. I wish I ordered the chocolate filled one too. This gem is located very close to Hanauma Bay. We stopped here four times for malasadas on our five day trip because they are so tasty! We had the original cinnamon sugar, custard and haupia (coconut cream). They come out hot and tasty! Nice crisp chewy outside and soft and tender insides! Our favorites are the cinnamon sugar and custard. service is not always the fastest, but well worth the short wait. Though I usually do not review smaller snack items on my page, I decided to make an exception when it came to Leonard's Bakery. On the island of Oahu, Leonard's has made a name for itself with many of their locations popping up left and right in the past few years. And now learning they've added quite a few food trucks to their armada, I knew I had to try one of their famous malasadas after coming across one in Hawaii Kai. I came across the truck on a Tuesday afternoon around 2PM sitting on the corner of Lunalilo Home Road and the Kalanianaole Highway and proceeded to walk up to check out their menu. Funny enough, there was no line at all despite the fact I've constantly heard of the large lines that can stretch around the parking lot. After looking for awhile, I settled on a original malasada and a cinnamon sugar malasada while others in my party got other kinds. The original AND the cinnamon cost $1.70 each, both before tax. After paying, I stepped to the side and it was ready for pickup within a minute. Picking up a malasada for the first time, I was impressed as it felt pretty dense despite being a light pastry with no fillings! But it was larger than the palm of my hand (and I have big hands) and a single one was filling. A pastry of this size for $1.70 is considered VERY good in price to portion ratio. Especially in Hawaii where prices for everything is easily inflated due to import costs, these malasadas were even cheaper than regular pastries on the mainland and other bakeries on the island. Definitely worth the purchase no matter how much you're budgeting. The malasadas were very fresh and tasted great as well! The malasada itself was light and tasted like a very light donut. The outside was lightly crisp while the inside was doughy which gave a mini variation inside. The inside also had a subtle sweet flavor which was taken to another level once the sugar on top mixed with the dough. The powdered sugar did make a mess, but I didn't mind much as the flavor had me captivated in the moment. The cinnamon sugar malasada tasted identical to the original. Only difference was that the cinnamon added made the malasada taste somewhat heavier which curbed the free-flowing sugar taste. It wasn't bad, but I just prefer the regular one better. Because a single malasada went for just under 2 dollars all the while being filling and a delicious sugary treat, Leonard's malasadamobile easily earns a 5 star rating. Picking up some in the small pink box all the way to consuming them out in the open really was a unique experience. I would definitely come back to try some of their filled malasadas the next time I pass by one of their trucks and would highly recommend stopping to try one of these Hawaiian staple pastries! How can you really go wrong with Leonard's?! I mean, seriously! Those hot, fresh, and deliciously tasty malasadas can never be denied. My soul gets revived every single time that I bite into one of them thangs. Literally one of the most addictive carbs on this here planet and for a very good reason. Since when did they have a truck and why am I just now finding out about it?! As soon as I left Walgreens, I ran to that truck with a vengeance. And get this: no line. NO friggin' LINE brooo!!! Did you hear me?! I was shocked. Shocked that I randomly rolled up on this joint and then shocked again that I was able to walk right up. Was this real life?! It was. And I'mma tell you how I found out. Because I purchased a box of 6 of those lovely malasadas and ate almost all of them by myself right there in the parking lot. Hey, don't judge. It be like that sometimes. When you haven't had this goodness in literal years, all that you really can do is indulge. And that, I did. Sugar and cinnamon all on my hands, face, and clothes, but do you really think I gave a damn in that moment?! Those malasadas were just SOOOO incredibly scrumptious! They were piping hot and literally melting in my mouth. Just as good if not better than their heavily coveted brick and mortar location minus the extremely long lines. Heaven found my ass that day. Because whew chile'... I was in complete carb heaven! And by the way; I got an order of every malasada flavor that they had that day. All were delicious, but the cinnamon sugar and custard filled will forever be my favorite flavors. Yes, yes, this truck knows how to crank out some deliciously addictive malasadas. Side note: you can pay with cards but there's a $5 card minimum. I can't believe that I literally stumbled across this malasamobile in the Walgreens Parking lot! Leonard's Bakery Malasadamobile is parked in a shopping plaza. I'm not sure if it's permanent or if it actually moves around. This is a Food Truck, so it only carries the main staples...Malasadas. None of the other baked goods are available. The Malasadamobile doesn't have all flavors available either.
