You know, this place is just ok. I came here yesterday for lunch because I was craving a Gyros Salad. I was actually very disappointed with it. Although the salad was given to me in a larger box, and I was impressed at first, the salad itself did not fill up much of the box. There was a good amount of lamb, but it was thinly sliced. It tasted pretty good though, so I'm not really complaining about that. The veggies, however, were a big disappointment. My entire salad seemed to have consisted of the inside layers of the Romaine stalk. It was a very bitter salad. On top of that, the onions and tomatoes were very thinly sliced, so that was another big disappointment. They serve it with a piece of pita bread as well, so I might as well have ordered the Gyro instead of the salad. Also, the dressing was very watery. Major disappointment. I only came here because I had an amazing Gyros Salad from the Good and Healthy cafe on King Street on Friday, and I didn't have time yesterday to walk down there to get another one. I know now, that Good and Healthy will always be worth the walk for a quality salad, and they're FAST too. Here, the overall time it took to make my salad was a little over five minutes, even though I was first in line. That's not as quick as I would like considering how I only have a half-hour lunch break, it's a simple salad (just throw some ingredients in a box along with some dressing YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO TOSS IT FOR ME), and I was the ONLY ONE in line! I might come back here another time and try something else, but until then, three stars. Minus one star for the food quality being sub-par, and minus one star for the lady at the cash register being rather cold an abrasive when she took my order. She was cold even when she gave me my food at the end, and I tried to be friendly with her. She couldn't even smile, and she seemed to just want to rush me out of the place! Overall, the food is overpriced and you get very small portions. Most of the flavors range from okay to just bland. The gyro is good and pretty much like gyro you'd get anywhere else. That's where the positives end. The moussaka ($14.75) has absolutely no flavor and is topped with tasteless cheese (like American cheese but with even less taste). Served with a small, sad side salad of iceberg and carrots. The hummus is good. I decided to give them another shot after the terrible moussaka because I wanted Greek food for lunch. The falafel ($14.75 for the plate) had a nice crispy exterior, but it was bland and a little dry. They give you the smallest container of tahini sauce and again the small, sad side salad of iceberg and carrots. The hummus was again good. Definitely not worth the price, especially if you get it delivered with all the extra fees. Paying $20+ for mediocre food that leaves you hungry does not make a good lunch. I starting working in Downtown Honolulu at the end of November and trying Leo's has been on my lunch radar for weeks. I finally took a break from the usual (boring) red cabbage salad and treated myself to my favorite Greek delectable: spanakopita (spinach pastry)! Instead of just ordering the spanakopita, I ordered the plate and expected all of the Mediterranean trimmings like rice pilaf, pita and hummus. I was a bit disappointed to find a very non-Greek salad (ranch dressing? What?!) occupying half of my plate. Ranch does not compliment spanakopitas at all. Where's the greek salad dressing? Come on, not even ONE kalamata olive or a sprinkle of feta? I'm the fool for expecting an Athenian experience for $5.75, but a girl can dream. While I wasn't 100% satisfied, I did enjoy my spanakopita and I appreciated that the nice lady didn't charge me for a side of tzatziki sauce. read more

I've been coming here for years. Sometimes I only come around once in a month, and sometimes I'll get on a kick and make weekly visits, but whenever I'm in the mood for Greek or just something different from the normal sandwich or salad, Leo's Taverna rarely disappoints. To be honest, I've only tried a few things on the menu. The beef and lule kebabs are both good and flavorful, but nine times out of ten it's the gyros for me. Half the time it's the gyros plate, which comes with a small lettuce salad, hummus, rice, and a pita bread, which is just everything you need for a delicious lunch. The other half of the time it's the value meal, which is a gyros sandwich (gyros meat, lettuce, onion, and tomato with tzatziki), fries, and a small fountain drink. Looking at it, it doesn't seem like a lot of food, but it fills me up every time. The folks there are always friendly, whether it's the family that owns the place or their employees working hard putting the food together. One of my absolute favorite gyros ever. The meat was super flavorful, and abundant. The sauce was perfect and the veggies were crisp. The garlic fries were well seasoned, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Have no idea what food there is because the owners/workers don't really speak English 4. Don't like the authentic and exotic food 5. Have food allergies, then Leo's is on the edge of Chinatown. It's Greek with a full traditional Greek and Mediterranean menu. Reasonable price. Not Hawaii reasonable, truly reasonable prices on everything. Nice casual sit down area. Very comfortable and breezy. Lots of buses stop right by. So if need to get somewhere you can catch a bus. It's also not far from a couple of non-chinatown sights. Zounds! What a gem! My gal and I flip-flopped around the local market scene in downtown Honolulu looking for a little lunch nosh and just by accident meandered in Leo's. We are definitely tourists (although we pass through Hawaii every three months on our way to work or on our way home), but the lady behind the counter treated us both like old friends even as we fumbled through our order. We both ordered gyros with fries and a soda pop. I loved it! Very fresh and full of flavor! Fries were great and the young lady who gave us our order made sure we had catsup and napkins... with a smile. I'm sold enough to go back and try the steak sticks, the hummous, and babaganoush. There are only a few Greek restaurants in Honolulu. This is one of them. The restaurant is located near several other restaurants and take out places right off of Bishop Street. It has a lot of seating but I suspect a lot of their business is take-out. There usually aren't a lot of people sitting inside. Leo's serves a variety of Greek food. I've tried the gyros and souvlakis before and they are delicious. It's not cheap but Greek food typically isn't. Come early as it can take about 10 minutes for them to prepare your order. first time coming to Leo's Taverna: Greek & Rotissarie Chicken located in fort street mall. They serve a variety of Greek food. The place is pretty spacious & clean. I ordered the shrimp scampi plate; which usually comes with pasta salad and corn. But I substituted for tossed greens for $9.45. My fiancé got the 1pc lule kabab (beef) plate for $7.35 -- which came with hummus, tossed greens & pita bread. My shrimp scampi was good, a little sour. Kind of had that tobasco-like taste. Perfect amount of garlic too! The Lule Kabob was good as well. The hummus was a little bland. We didn't get a soft drink because refills are .70 lol. Don't know why there's so many rude reviews but we had a good experience at Leo's Tavern. Will def come back to try the gyro read more

I started working Downtown again after being out for a few years so I've been lunching it up. I've been to Leo's Taverna once before and hit it up again this week with some friends. My previous memory of the place was almost non-existent (read as: forgettable). I had tried the spanakopita -- it was tasty, but a much smaller portion than I had expected. I'm pretty small and not a huge eater but it left me hungry, even with the sides. This time around I wised up and went for a hearty gyros plate, which came with a bed of batsami rice, tiny side salad, portion of hummus and a full-size pita. I agree with everyone that the salad is nothing special drenched in ranch dressing (but at least it's not iceberg lettuce!). The hummus was a nice side and I enjoyed it. The gyros itself was a nice mouthful but so salty that I eventually gave up and ate up everything else instead. As a lunchtime venue in Downtown, it's OK. It's not the best Greek food I've ever had, but, hey, it'a a turn-and-burn lunch destination. There's a fair amount of seating available, which is good for lunches with more than two or more (I feel like a lot of table seating leans towards parties of two sometimes). The turnaround between ordering and food is fairly quick, which I appreciated since we all were eating on on set lunch hours. I'd probably go again just because of the seating and location in downtown, but doubt I'll become a regular. read more

Is a 2 star fair? If you are really looking for a slightly different cuisine from the usual Asian & local plate lunch delicacies that litter the food haven known as Downtown Honolulu/Chinatown area? Or you are just sick of fast food all together???? Then Leo's Taverna is one of the place for you or maybe not- depending on whom you are going with that day. I am spoiled- I'll admit it when IT comes to a great food experience- I have lived in Athens for a few months and I have eaten in Chicago's Greek town before going to great live theater shows like Joseph and Les Mis. So when I compare a place like this - it can be understandable that they are not as authentic as in Athens or as good a major downtown/ metro location that has just huge volume like a NY or Chicago. If you are with friends that really don't like pizza or are on some kind of weird diet and they are from Turkey or the Mediterranean area in general- then Leo's is a good reasonable compromise to eating out together so that everyone is happy. The food is good if you know what you are ordering and are prepared ahead of time for what it will look like and taste like. It won't be as flaming sizzling hot like show quality Benny Hanna. It won't have all of the herd tastes that are so unique to authentic food- but it will be made in the style that is comfort food to those who enjoy lots of humas and kabobs. The food is good- made well in a good style for fast food Greek. The Tskiki(sp?) sauce hits the spot with me - that I like the taste and kick which has not been used yet to my knowledge in all of the prepackaged foods like BK. Humas can't be beat or it was already beat chicpeas and now it is just beat. The portions are really small- don't expect to share when they give you just 1 little pita half shell. It really is on the pricy side for food that would be cheaper if this was the mainland. Just know ahead of time that the dishes are small and then on the smaller side. There is a reason whey people that eat like this lose weight. Last few times there- the table tops were clean and wiped, but the floor had stuff on it. This is my first time here. I love Greek food so I am glad there is a place downtown. There are ample tables for sitting. Order at the counter and find your seat. I ordered the Gyros Salad. It was good but it didn't have any olives or dolmas. I think next time I will order the Gyros plate which comes with hummus and is the same price. A must stop on the Fort Street Mall crawl. Sure everyone orders the gyros. That's so last week. Try something more exotic. The baba ganoush here is the best on the island. It's better than the oxycontin you'll be offered outside the door. What is baba ganoush and why does it look so gross? Charlton Heston Soylent Green voice: "It's eggplant! It's eggplant!" Baba Ganoush is eggplant that has been roasted then pureed with olive oil with garlic and tahini added. Not so gross now isn't it? Combined with a nice soft warm pita bread it's like you're in some kinda Greek fantasy. I always get the veggie combo because in my former life I was vegetarian and am always aspiring to start again. This one doesn't disappoint. Baba Ganoush, Hummus, Dolmas (stuffed grape leaves) with yogurt sauce, greek salad and tabouleh. And a nice warm piece of pita bread. Makes it easy to be vegetarian here. For 8 bucks, even easier. (Keep in mind a veggie meal at DTE will be 8 bucks and you don't get half the food there.) On a side note. You will smell like garlic for the next fortnight after eating here. Okay if you are dodging vampires, not okay if you have a date lined up. I went here today, to take my house less client to get something to eat. She chose this place, after the Mexican place she originally wanted was closed. We walked into the very empty restaurant, and went to the counter. Me and my client are standing there when the lady at the register finally comes to the counter. She looks at me and then looks at my client, with nothing but obvious disgust on her face. The very first thing she says to me is "are you paying for her food"? I looked at the lady and couldn't believe how ignorant she was acting. I told her yes and then the lady proceeds to tell me and my client that we cannot eat in her restaurant because her customers will look at my house less client and walk out and go somewhere else. First of all, her restaurant was empty!! There were at least 15 tables all in there, and every single one of them was EMPTY. I looked at my client and asked if she'd like to go elsewhere and she shook her head no. So I ordered my clients food and the lady behind the counter makes it very clear that we needed to WAIT OUTSIDE HER RESTAURANT AND SHE WOULD BRING MY CLIENTS FOOD OUTSIDE TO US. I couldn't believe how rude this lady was. Her place was empty and we couldn't even wait inside for our food?!?? My client was not smelly or rude or mean. She was polite and didn't even let the woman talking down to her phase her at all. I wish I had her strength because I wanted to yell and scream and cuss this restaurant out but I didn't. I felt a little cheated from a true Grecian food experience :( I wanted hummus and I thought it came with the moussaka plate since it was served with a pita bread. Ok, my bad on that one since I read the descriptions way too fast. After that initial letdown, I was pretty bummed that the salad came with ranch dressing! Aww...so much for that. Anyways, the moussaka was pretty good. It's basically a Greek lasagna without the noodles sub eggplant. It was on the oily side so it was hard to finish. The lady in the front was really nice. Fast food Greek downtown. This place is always there if you want fast food Greek style. I've been an occasional customer for years now, and it always was an alternative to other types of food in the area. Maybe it's nostalgia, but remember their food being better before I moved away. My usual is the Gyro Sandwich with fries. The Gyro is okay, but the pita is thick and feels store bought. The Chicken Kebob is not too fantastic: it has a spice rub but it's not soaked into the meat. The food doesn't have a high quality behind it, and feels like fast food Greek. The usual sides are there, but lacking. The hummus is okay. The rice is pretty bland for Greek. I still never understand why they give ranch dressing: I could have sworn they have actual yogurt sauce years ago. It's alright to stop by if you aren't expecting much, and it is pretty convenient downtown. There are a couple better places in the area for Mediterranean food: It's Good & Healthy Cafe and The Deli. The main, archetype Greek food that no Greek-themed restaurant should dare get wrong. This place does it embarrassingly badly, on all levels, from the lukewarm, dry lamb, bland tomatoes and tasteless lettuce. The gyro is dripping with sauce that has little taste authentic to Greek/Turkish food. The fries are ok. Not traditional by any level. The bread, supplied by Kronos, is cold. It should be hot, steaming with heat to add character to the gyro. By all accounts, this place is done. Crashing into the ground. Fast. Put it out of its misery by visiting Donner Shack, the establishment that gets high marks for everything this place fails miserably at doing. read more

I've also tried their kebab plate which features 2 meat skewers, a small side of salad, hummus and pita bread which is good too. One other thing that I've tried from them is the half chicken which is roasted nicely and also comes with a side of salad, hummus and pita bread. Overall, the food is tasty here and there's good variety if you're not looking for a sandwich type meal or just plain ol' meat. One word: Bleah. What, did I just go here on a bad day? I know it wasn't just MY food, because I was with some friends, and neither of them is going back any time soon, either. First of all, what Greek place serves "salad" that's made primarily of iceberg/romaine lettuce and topped with ranch dressing? Gross. But at least that was just a side. The bad news is, my entree wasn't much better. I got the "chicken pie," which sounds a little revolting, but the picture looked promising, as did the idea of grilled chicken nested in phyllo dough with cheese. Except . . . where was the cheese? And why was the phyllo dough so over-baked that it was actually BLACK underneath? I didn't think you could actually burn phyllo; now, thanks to Leo's Taverna, I have been enlightened. Oh, AND the people who work there are rude. My friends and I arrived in time to hear the old man cashier yelling at somebody, and my friend got barked at herself when she went to pick up our food a couple minutes after we'd ordered. So I go in here about 4 times a year. Each time I am reminded of why I am not a regular. Enviroment- it was as hot in here as it was outside and today is, according to Guy Hagi, a scorcher! The place has always looked quaint, as in this studio apartment is on a quaint corner (Hotel St. and Maunakea). Food- never impresses. Today I had the double chicken kabob plate. The chicken was very good. Rice was beyond bland, it was grainy but tasted like water. Hummus was an embarrassment to the people Greece and the Middle East. I've mad hummus this bad and while doing so I have apologized to the Greek Gods explaining that I am a mere mortal and should have known better. The salad was equally unimpressive, the dressing isn't even home made OR Greek. The baklavah is ok, but just ok. Staff- they are ok, nice BUT slow. This wouldn't be a problem if the food was worth the wait. But it is not. Overall this place is tortuously hot, slow and the food isn't good. If you catch me on a weekday and I have really horrid breath, then chances are I had lunch at Leo's. I swear, I was burping garlic all afternoon yesterday after having the chicken plate for lunch. I don't know what's in the garlic sauce (the lady told me it's just garlic, but I think there's something else - maybe yogurt, and at least a little bit of salt), but it's REALLY good. The roast chicken is generally good, sometimes a bit overdone. But my favorite is the vegetarian combo, which has (pardon my spelling) baba gannoush with smoked paprika, hummus, tossed salad, a stuffed grape leaf, tabbouleh, and a pita. I wish they added a falafel in there too but the overall plate wouldn't be as healthy. Still, everything on that plate is delicious. I would want a little more on my plate for $8, but I'm never hungry afterward so I guess it's enough! This may not be the best greek eats on the island, but it's pretty darned good in its own right. While I admittedly often just go for the easy pick of the gyros value meal, I have yet to find a dish from Leo's that doesn't aim to please. Speaking of the value meal (which includes a hefty gyro sandwich, side of seasoned fries, and a small but upgradeable drink), I don't know what they do to their fries but, as a french fry, addict I have got to say that they've got the best seasoned fries I've ever had. Other standout dishes in my book - the stuffed grape leaves, falafels, moussaka, & stuffed eggplant. The added bonus of Leo's is that a happy omnivore like me can satiate my carnivorous cravings whilst dining with my very vegetarian friends and everyone is able to find something delicious and satiating to eat. read more

I've been going here since I started working downtown in 2010, so I'm a little surprised I haven't reviewed this place yet. An okay place for Greek food, but it's not bad to fill a quick craving. Likes: I like the gyro here. Their garlic fries used to be really good, but they changed it some time ago and now they're just good (provided they're not soggy). Dislikes: I've tried the other plates, and I'm not really a fan. The hummus isn't that good either. They can also take a very long time to prepare your food, especially during the lunch rush hour. I stopped in here with my best friend for lunch today because I love Greek food... and Greek food at affordable prices, even better! You're definitely not eating here for the ambiance, but most people in downtown are just passing through. We both ordered a number 6 combo which was shaved lamb with rice, hummus, a greek salad and pita bread all for $8.85. I guess you could've turned it into a gyro, but I was starving and didn't want to take the time to put it all together so I attacked head on. The shaved beef was tender (of course it is shaved pretty thinly so I guess it would just naturally tear apart. lol) and flavorful with a slight peppery taste. They also give you a yogurt dipping sauce which added to the already great flavor. The salad was good. I'm not sure what kind of dressing they use it but it seemed like another yogurt sauce. The hummus was amazing and it was powdered lightly with paprika and had a black olive on top. And to top it all off the pita bread was hot and soft which is definitely a plus. The only thing I didn't really like was the rice. It was a little too plain for my liking but if that's the only thing wrong with the food then that won't stop me from coming here again. After my first experience with Greek food at the Greek Corner, I SUPER excited to try Leo's Taverna in Downtown. Suuuure, I could've tried the Donki location at Kaheka BUUUUT I wanted the real deal. AMBIANCE: If you walk past the door on the street side, you'll past their open kitchen door, and may even hear the jolly, happy Greek guy singing while he's cookin' ;D Heeeeeee.. I chuckle every time... When you walk in, it seems pretty divey. Pretty homely and extremely casual. The lighting is musty and dimmed, and they let the lights from the outside just shine on in. I wonder if this is what a typical walk in Greek restaraunt is like in Europe... :) SERVICE: I'd like to talk about SERVICE before FOOD because well.. you definitely experience this before you experience the meal. When you order, you can clearly see everyone cooking the food and they all look pretty FOB from Greece. The older man and lady that may take your order is EXTREMELY EXXTREMELY funny and genuine and sincere and I get a kick out of putting my order in for them. I'm new to eating Greek food, so they are always so happy and friendly to help explain what something might be, OR if I know I dont like something, they will always accomodate. I love this Mom-&-Pop-Shop feel! THUUUUMBS UP!!!!!!!!! If you're in the area, walk in and make conversation. I've never done this. But really, they're Greek outgoing characters make me wanna invite them to have a.. erh.. beer(!?!?) with them. I don't drink beer. That explains a lot. HAHA. Anyways.. yeahh.. service.. Leos Taverna people: They are quite the characters. :D I like them. FOOOOD!!! Okay, So i realize I'm not an expert of Greek food, but I have NOT been dissappointed eating here yet. I've tried their GYROS, IMAM, TABOULEH, HUMMUS, BABA GANNOUSH, PITA, SALAD.. uhh.. pretty much the typical things a person COULD get if they got Greek. It's pretty standard but.. I haven't been dissappointed! They don't cook their pitas fresh, I see them in huge Costco-storelike bags and they pretty much heat them up and put them in foil for you which is really nice compared to The Greek Corner. Pita being hot or cold.. mehh.. I guess it depends.. its been 50/50. Anyways.. normally I'd just give it 3.5 because its better than just ALRIGHT because the real kicker for me is the fact that the foods always been good, and the experience has always been a pleasant one! C: But also.. It's downtown.. Sorry buddiesss.. Downtown got minus points for no parking and having a limited "open hours" business. :( So I guess.. it'd have to be a 3... :( read more
