Wow.What has happened to this place? I spent nearly $34.00 on the a dozen of the nastiest cupcakes I have ever eaten. The cake was dry and tasteless; the frosting was a gritty mouthful of shortening and sugar--period. Is this their response to the rising cost of ingredients or are they just bilking customers? So surprised that this cute little shop in downtown Holladay was not as I had hoped. I was excited to finally try their pastries, as I live so close, and can always use a new bakery. The service was friendly, and the smells inside the bakery were wonderful. I ordered a small eclair, a chocolate chip cookie, and an apple pastry. They had some gingerbread cookies and chocolate cakes that looked amazing. The cream in the eclair was unlike any eclair I have ever had anywhere. I could not finish the eclair. The apple pastry was bland, and the chocolate chip cookie reminded me of the high school cafeteria. While I love the retro looking bakery and sign outside, and the parking spaces that are slanted out in front, I had hoped to love Leslie's a bit more. read more

Overall a pretty basic, old fashioned style bakery, though that's not bad! We just have a lot of options in the area, so it's difficult for one to stand out. I stopped by on a Saturday morning and there were two girls manning the register. They were very sweet, and happy to answer my questions, echoing my excitement and suggesting the freshest/best treats. There is a small bistro table (maybe two?) against the wall, then the center of the shop is totally open, and the cases line the other walls. They weren't entirely full, but there were plenty of options. Seems they specialize in danishes as there were a large variety, along with cookies, cakes, rolls, sausage rolls, and meat pies. They had some canned sodas and bottled water, too. My husband loves eclairs, and they had a small and large (obvs went with the large). They also had individual decorated squares of cakes in a few flavors, and I was intrigued by the chocolate rum with pineapple filling, so grabbed that. Then, though I don't particularly love danishes, felt I was doing them a disservice if I didn't try one, so grabbed the almond flavor. It was about $9 for everything, though I can't say exactly what the price of each item was as they weren't marked (there is a "menu" on the wall, but it doesn't include everything). The eclair was wonderful-my connoisseur husband said it was the best he has had in a long time, and I enjoyed it, too! The filling was like a whipped cream/Bavarian mix, the chocolate frosting was very good, and the sprinkles decorating the ends were actually made of chocolate, not the standard waxy jimmies. The danish was fine. I liked the pastry part, but the filling was a little too almond extract-y, and sweet. The cake was....well, I bought it because I hadn't seen pineapple and chocolate combined, and apparently there's a reason for that: It's gross! Besides that, while a touch of real rum flavor can be nice in dessert, this was verrrry artificial. Now, with the said, when I removed that horrid filling and just ate the chocolate cake and frosting, it was very good as the cake was light and moist. I think this is a case of ordering the wrong things. I should have gone with my gut and grabbed a raspberry danish. And there were plenty of other delectable cake flavors I would like to try (and so many cookies, too!). If nothing else, that eclair truly was fantastic, and eating it is an experience worthy of repeating. read more

I am always looking for the quintessential best pastry when traveling in Europe whether it is Cannolis in Italy, Portuguese custard tarts in Portugal or Eclairs, croissants and Madeleines in France. I went into the newly opened Leslie's French Bakery. There is absolutely nothing French about Leslie's. The Eclair was not cream filled but more like an instant pudding having chocolate donut glaze with sprinkles just like they have at a grocery store bakery. The pastries were the same quality. I'm not convinced that butter is even used in any products they offer. People today are wanting to get back to the high quality local markets and foods. And in a local french bakery I expect organic cream, butter, flour, eggs, honey, maple syrup/sugar to start. There are however great baked goods in the Salt Lake Valley and sold at the local markets just not in Holladay... not yet. read more

Awww I really don't want to rate this place with 2 stars, because the lady is so sweet, HOWEVER, I cannot deceive my yelp friends. First and foremost, this is not a French bakery. I was expecting to see croissants of all flavors and fresh bread, and napoleons, but I've been hoodwinked. They actually do not make croissants anymore! ---------------W-H-A-T!?!?!?!--------------- and when I asked why, the lady told me that no one orders croissants anymore. I almost fainted. That should be enough for 1 star right? I didn't see fresh breads or smell any. They were bagged up like they would be at the grocery store. Looking through the glass, I saw "Napoleon" and was really excited! This thing looked like a very sad chocolate cake with sprinkles on it. I don't think they know what a Napoleon cake really is. If you didn't know either, it's a layered puff pastry with pastry cream in between the layers. The best I've found in SLC thus far is Gourmandise. read more

Chocolate Rum cake with pineapple filling has been a family birthday cake tradition for decades. Sadly, the new owner just doesn't have the magic. Cake was dry, stale, pineapple filling nonexistent and the yummy rum buttercream frosting...the highlight of the cake is now a disgusting lardy or cheap butter thick fudge (and not in a good way)...Mom just spent over $100 for my Dad's 88th and we are done until they step up their game. Such a shame, we love supporting local businesses. read more

I am originally from Germany and haven't found many or any good bakeries around here until my husband bought me some bakery items from Leslie's. Their food is incredibly soft, tastes fresh, and has so much flavor. It's the closest to home that I've tasted here in SLC and I've tried a bunch of places. Even "german" ones. read more

Wish I would have read some of these before going in. I don't like leaving bad reviews for small local businesses but I don't think you can have French pastries in your name and not sell croissants. There also was very little bread to choose from. I came by at 9am on a Saturday, and thinks looked sparse, a few cakes, some brownies and a lot of danishes. If you love danishes this place might be for you. I'm not a big Danish fan but I wanted to try something so I got an almond Danish. Turns out they don't accept a card for payment for anything under five dollars so I also got a raspberry danish. I took a bite of both, they were extremely sweet, too sweet, and didn't taste that great to me. I was done after one bite. Just not my kind of bakery. read more

This is a hole in the wall, no nonsense local gem with very nice people at the counter. Count on Leslie's to have the best Danish pastries and eclairs in town. I usually don't give bad reviews, but as some one who currently works in a bakery, I just have to say their customer service is subpar. Their goods are super tasty! So much so that I asked for a whole tray of one of their items and then half a tray of their other item. But I when I asked for it the lady at the counter very rudely said "are you serious? You can't be doing that, it's not fair to everyone else. You need to make an order next time, got it?" Which I find weird cause ever time I come in the items I was asking for was always over flowing. All in all she pack up my order passive aggressively and was just not attentive. I think I'll need to find some other locals to take care of me. Again as some one who works in a bakery currently, I would be happy I'm selling out my goods, and then run to the back to make some more! I like to support local shops so I stopped here in January. I bought 4 different pastries. I was shocked at horrible the quality was. Even with a sub-par pastry, you can usually power through. Not here. The pastries were stale - every single one - and tasted like they had been sitting on a shelf for weeks. Usually you can find one redeeming item. Not here. I saved the brownie for last because brownies are my favorite. It was the biggest disappointment!! It wasn't a brownie - it was basically stale chocolate cake. It barely tasted like chocolate, it was so light. The frosting was disgusting. It may have been the worst brownie I have ever eaten, and I have eaten a lot of brownies in my day. And, not for nothing, but literally NOTHING IS FRENCH. Don't call yourself a French bakery if you're not French. I'm actually shocked this place has such good reviews. read more

I have loved this place for many years but now nothing is the same. The Oatmeal cookies I had last week were awful like they were a week old. Today, I purchaed a loaf cake that is covered with fudge. This is a delicious cake. The young man who helped me leaned over and took the cake out of the window with his bare hands!!! Not from the bottom but holding onto both sides of this fudge on the cake with his bare hands!! Watching him do this I said to him, "did you just pick that up with your bare hands?", he replied, "they were just washed". What on earth!!! That is someones food they will be eating! I sat there to think if I was going to even buy this cake now. Then he boxed it and I got home and he had smahed the roses completly flat putting the lid down on the box! What a mess. If you go there, make sure they use tissus or gloves. I won't be going back for awhile. It's be quite disappointing. :( read more

I was driving by during my first visit to the SLC and adjacent areas and saw Leslie's French Pastries and thought to my self, "Self, this place is too adorable not to go into!" The inside adorbs matched the outside and I wanted to select one of everything to go. I ended up with a cheese danish and an almond danish and they were both delicious. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The owner is an absolute firecracker! Just a great, charming older gentleman who makes great pastries. If I'm ever in the area again I will definitely stop in and try the gingerbread men who aren't made of gingerbread. I think they are cardamon men which doesn't quite roll of the tongue easily but i'm sure that they are tasty! read more

So, if you are going to charge $3 for a pastry, make sure to wear hairnets when preparing the food. Found thick dark hair in ours and we lost our appetite after this. Also, they do not make French Croissants! This should be a standard for a "French" bakery. I have lived in Europe twice and in France this is a must. The petit fours were a bit of a disappointment honestly. They were pretty much overpriced slices of sheet cake. The frosting was good, but they weren't tiny layers of cake decorated so cute. I was laughing at the comment about the hair. I went into the back of Leslie's bakery to talk with the owner/baker. (Who has white hair) They ice all of their danish with a brush that has dark bristles. So no hair to worry about. I'm in love with their cream cheese Danish, their eclairs are the BEST and the chocolate mint cakes are to die for. The honey boys (large gingerbread men) are a tradition and smell like Christmas!! After driving by it for the past several months, I finally went in to see if it was as delicious as its fancy name implies and I was disappointingly disappointed. A better name for this place would probably be "Leslie's Utah Bakery". Not to bag on Utah, but its idea of a bakery is mint brownies, snickerdoodles and orange rolls. And that's pretty much what this was. The display was unimpressive and the prices were insulting. I opted for a chocolate chip cookie just for good measure and at $1.65 for something about the size of my hand, I felt like I was overpaying. I can't speak to many of the pastries at Leslie's, but I can SHOUT about their orange rolls. If you've ever been to an event that was catered by Meier's catering in SLC, you might have noticed that one of the best things they serve is their orange roll. And, they get them from Leslie's. It's flaky, buttery, and very orange zesty. My favorite thing about the orange roll though, is the bright orange flavor. Often I find that things which are orange flavored are reminiscent of baby aspirin. Not so with these orange rolls. These are a sticky, orange-y, delightful, unquestionable must-try! Other than that, I've had a few things there - cookies and such, all old standards, but nothing that blew me away. That's okay though - Leslie's is a good, solid, old-fashioned bakery that delivers exactly what it looks like it should - classic bakery fare, made with love and care. Go and sample their wares. Time to change the name of this bakery. As far as I can tell, they do not carry a single French pastry in the shop. No croissants, no baguettes, no madeleines, no pain au chocolate. Technically, a baguette is not a pastry, I got it. Seriously though, this is nothing more than your typical American cake shop. I don't know if their cakes are good or bad since I only drove a few miles out of my way to have a flaky, delicious pain au chocolate. They were served at both our weddings and the weddings of our brothers many years ago. We were pleased to find out the pastry chef is still the same! This is my new favorite place to indulge in my admittedly rare sweet tooth. Rugrat and I checked it out on a whim a few weeks ago, and it's now our go-to place for a breakfast pastry every Wednesday morning on our way to drop her off at school The pastries are everything you want in a pastry... buttery, flaky deliciousness. They aren't over-glazed either so you really can taste the pastry part without being overwhelmed by the sugar. I can't decide if I like the almond or the pecan danishes better. Oh, and there are cheese and fruit danishes, chocolate covered shortbread and their caramel brownies are like a brownie with fudge as the icing. Oh good hell, just get any of them and you will love yourself forever. Rugrat is especially fond of the mint brownies. Eventually I'll get around to trying the cakes and breads, but right now I'm indulging in trying all the different pastries. I love love love eclairs. I have learned though that not all eclairs are created equal. At Leslie's they set the Eclair standard. Dark chocolate frosting on the top of the firm but flaky pastry and filled with thick yummy creme in the middle. I just gained 10 pounds thinking about them but if you're near Leslie's stop in for one or some of their other delicious French pastries then go to the gym. read more
