My guy went to lunch with a friend. He bought me a salad and beverage. Let's start with the salad. The salad was a great size. It was full of mixed greens. The cucumbers and tomatoes were duper fresh and very delicious. The chicken was a lil charred so that's why I dropped a half star. The drink was pomegranate and ginger. If you like a to sip and savor a sweet treat this will work for you. If you don't like super sweet drinks ask for it without honey. (I think they make it fresh). I just added my own freshly brewed hibiscus tea ti take away the super sweetness. I took a half star off for it being overly sweet but it's still very delicious. I plan on going myself to sit down. What a great spot to visit after church today! Parking is free, street parking thank goodness. It was Sunday Brunch and it was delicious! What pleasant surprise Let's Eat to Live Was! A Black-owned restaurant that focuses on healthful options which are also quite tasty is a much-needed concept. I stopped by for dine-in. You sit where you want and the young man working the restaurant was polite and attentive. I had the tomato soup, the fried whiting, brussel sprouts, green beans, and coconut rice. There wasn't a bad option among them though my personal faves were the fish and the soup. Very cute, very fresh, very good. The lamb chops are amazing. So tender and flavorful. The garlic mashed potatoes, greens, and green beans are so tasty. We both got the Escovitch red snapper with garlic mashed potatoes and mustard greens for one dinner and Mac n cheese, brussel sprouts and carrot fluff for the other dinner. Portions were generous and I did have leftovers for another meal. Let me tell you the fish was flaky and tender. It was also a nice portion and seasoned well. This place almost seems like it could be a gem but it has the traditional "black owned" growing pains which is unfortunate. It's clean & has nice decor. The food on yelp looked appetizing so we were excited to try it. This was our 1st visit and upon entering it was not clear who was the hostess but a young lady took initiative and seated us. It took a bit for our server to reappear but when she did she was a sweetheart, very courteous & polite. While we were waiting, the back door was open letting in a very cold draft while they brought in supplies. That initially made me uncomfortable but we didn't want that to discourage us. We ordered a couple items that were "out" but we also didn't want that to discourage us. We then just decided to get our food to go ordering secondary options instead. We had the black bean burger and the estovich fish with garlic mash potatoes, string beans, and a carrot "mash". I forgot the actual name of it. The garlic mash potatoes definitely need more garlic. It wasn't enough. I barely taste it. The carrot dish was good to me. I read some negative reviews about it but I enjoyed it. I wish my fish was spicy, just my liking. Upon entry there was no one there to great us, so after looking around and asking loudly do we seat ourselves. A lady the owner or boss comes and apologizes then speaks to a waitress, who asks if we will sit at another table while she cleans off our table. I'm not going to hang on the rest of the awkward interaction. so sadly most things we wanted to try were on the menu but not available. Red snapper Ceviche, Salmon Fataya, and coconut rice. We decided to order Broccoli Pelotas, these were over cooked and salty. The outside was crispy and the inside mushy. The wings were full wings but small, tasted like regular bbq sauce. Escovitch red snapper was over cooked and tough. The sauce was like a sweet an sour sauce heavier on the vinegar. Garlic mash was not flavored well needed salt, butter, more garlic and needed less of the skin in the mash, Brussel sprouts were not bad and the mustard greens were a big no. Butter Garlic Lamb Chops were ok, different sizes so cooked different, some over cooked some cooked nicely, but not the worst. Mac and cheese was ok, asparagus was over cooked and the hard ends were left on, and carrot fluff was ok. The veggie rice was also a no. A party of 3 went for breakfast on Sunday 8/24. The place had good recs and the online menu looked inviting. We arrived not knowing Sundays was brunch only. Nothing on the website mentioned this fact. Plus no where was a sign on pricing. The price was 38.35--a very curious price. We saw eggs,pancakes and beef bacon. We looked into the serving tureens and saw greens beans, sweet potato fluff?, fried whiting , jasmine rice, baked chicken, and Alfredo dish, and another ummemorable dish. We decided to stay and selected our foods. Two in our party opted for breakfast foods. I selected the fried fish,rice and green beans and fried potatoes. ALL the food was inedible in the end because it WAS COLD!. There burners under the chafing dishes. It's not known whether were lit until the chef came out to check. After much consultation the agreed to give us a 35% discount. The final faux pas was serving coffee in paper cups even though we requested China cups. In conclusion this place needs to cease brunches and get some real cups for dining in patrons. This first impression will be lasting and they have lost me as a returning customer. I'm assuming it's better for pickup or delivery. Loved the lamb chops but the the service here wasn't very attentive. I was one of only two tables here and the amount of time it took to take my order was ridiculous (over 15 min). When the food arrived, I didn't have silverware and it took me 5+ min to even see someone to flag down to get it. Now I'm done eating and no one is walking by for me even to ask for the check. The manager/sever explained the menu when necessary in detail and was very open upon being asked about the food, she didn't miss a beat regarding refills and requests. I thought the lamb chops were mind blowing but the carrots that were smoothly whipped into a heavenly tasteful side of veggies along with the greens that tasted like my mom's quickly became the star of my plate. In addition, if you like ginger beer then THIS one is the best you'll ever find, not too sweet or overwhelming but just right! Hey, I'm telling you, the food is amazing, compliments to the chef and the cook. I wish they allowed me to give more than five stars... Accidentally discovered this place one day while looking for a Starbucks/juice bar. Took a bus a little south of my house, and wound up at a very cutely named place. I instantly knew I had to go in! And from that very day, I was not disappointed!!! First off, on weekdays, they have specials, which you can order a whole meal for under $13!!! And I'm talking about delicious, home-cooked soul food... like the stuff I had in Tennessee and Missouri. It honestly feels like somebody's Mamma and Papa made it. Everybody there is so polite and fun to talk to... And they always make room for you. Like the second time I came in, I brought The Boy (), and while the dining room was full, they got us some menus and let us sit in the to-go waiting area. Top-tier quality service right there!! The whole place also has a very neighborhood/community feel- decorated with Harlem Renaissance art and jazz musicians. They even have a live piano bar (but I never remember what days; I just so happened to be there by chance). The only downside of this place (if there ever was one) is that it fills up quickly... But they offer to go/online delivery, and there are plenty of parks/the lakefront you can go to. Otherwise, the food gets made in a timely manner... and I was never starving while there. ;) They also have amazing vegetarian and vegan options, as well as the best desserts you've ever had!!! That carrot cake was to die for, and the bf and I are dying to try that peach cobbler (which I've been told is super popular!). Everything is so well priced, and the portions are amazing! I tried Let's Eat to Live when I saw they delivered through GrubHub. I always complain that there aren't enough options for healthy eating in local restaurants. So I was intrigued by the name and placed an order. I ordered the Red Lentil Soup with Apricots. It was rich and satisfying but still light. The fruit gave the soup a bright taste that complimented the tomato scented base. I also tried their barbecued chicken with sweet coconut rice, smoked salmon flecked mustard greens and something called carrot fluff. WOW! Where do I start? The rice was studded with shaved coconut which gave it a pleasant toothiness, the mustard greens were spicy and complex and the carrot fluff was smooth, silky and reminiscent of sweet potatoes.
