I wish they were open on Sundays, but I think it's a family owned business and I suppose they have to close sometime. I've been eating Chicago flavored popcorn for 50 years (started with the Sears that used to be on 79th Street,to the tiny downtown shops to Evergreen Plaza - 60's and 70's). It all smells good but Let's Get Poppin' is the best in and around Chicagoland, period. No one or business is perfect. This business is in a pretty good spot on the South Side of Chicago. I have to agree that they are generally not smiling and making small talk. Although on some of my many visits they were more friendly than last Tuesday 6/9/15, when the popcorn was tasted a day or two old - and still pretty good. But they are cordial, answer your questions and try to keep the line moving. (They smile when you complete your purchase.) I love this place. Garrett's, we are so over it ain't funny. A better analogy is that if Garrett's were a boyfriend I had tired of I would break up via text.While Poppin' does offer other treats like cakes and the odd bit of fudge, stick to what they do best--popcorn. Here you will find many varieties of the most sinfully delicious cheese corn you will ever stain your fingers with. I further stress that if Garrett's were your girlfriend and she suspected you were cheating on her with Poppin' your car's windows might be busted out while you slept. Someone else mentioned that Let's Get Poppin's popcorn doesn't get stale the next day. I agree. If you can keep yourself from eating it all in one sitting, it's good for a few days. After reading a few of the sour grape reviews on here I feel the need to respond to one particular reviewer who felt the need to comment on the neighborhood and not feeling safe.It's fine if you don't like the popcorn but to cast aspersions on the customers just because you were there at a time when freebies were given out is low. Second, you give someone who might otherwise visit the idea that they can't do so in peace. What nonsense.The staff is friendly and the people who inhabit the area are decent hardworking folk who mind their own business. I've been going to this place since 2003. My girl lived in the area, I saw it one night but they were closed, so she said she would bring me some the next day. And EVER since I've been coming back. As I sit here and eat it now it dawned on me that I've never left a review. So here goes, since 1991 I've been eating Garret's (even considered franchising one in NY back in like 2000, different story). But once I had popcorn from here Garret's was a distant memory. But a time or two being downtown I would grab some and EACH time I've been sadly disappointed. Then they opened one on 87th and I gave them a try. The manager even gave me a BIG bag for free after tasting it, I tossed it. Their popcorn ALWAYS has a burned taste to it. I don't remember it being like that way back when or maybe since my tastebuds matured I notice it. As I see tourist and even chicagoans go into any Garret's I shake my head. As far as customer service, it's iffy, one day they're friendly the next, they're not. For the most part they seem robotic to me, as if the owner had a talking to em and they fake friendly. But I'm not there to make friends and they're only bagging up popcorn and ringing me up. I'm out the door, I'm not dining in so to hell with em. Ok - I saw this place on Chicago's Best... I decided to stop by here while visiting some customers on the Southside. well- there were many people in the store.. All axing for Free Sampo's... After waiting for everyone to get their freebies- I ordered the Carmel and The cheese. also a small bag of Cheese. It doesn't make sense how they have the popcorn for sale- I understand its by the pound- but they sell by the .10 or the .20 of a pound.. So I asked for .90 of a pound of popcorn. cause that's on the menu.. Stoopid idea. As for the popcorn- horrible. this is Wet Cheese Popcorn. Its so Oily, you feel your arteries clogging up. you can't eat a kernal with looking liek you fingered Ms. Pac-Man. A wet, gross, oily popcrn.. Um- Delicious! I think not. This is a disaster. This was the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE EVER. . Went in right before closing tonite, to purchase Popcorn for a friend visiting from out of town. First I should've suspected something when I saw them pulling the CHEESE POPCORN from a large bag sitting on the counter. . But I just assumed it was a back stock. My friend saw a Christmas Tin sitting close by.. so she asked to taste the other cheese-Carmel mixture. . At this point the girl had already made our large bag, I asked to CHANGE and she refused stating it "was too late".. and the tone her was extremely Rude. .She proceeded to say we ordered it, and it wasn't their mistake. .WTH..So I paid vowed I WILL NEVER COME BACK., and as SUSPECTED THE POPCORN WAS STALE, I'LL BE RETURNING IT TOMORROW. I'LL PAY THE EXTRA and go GARRETT'S, at least they understand they're a gourmet Popcorn establishment and Customers have options. .. Customer Service is key to keeping us coming back. read more

This place popcorn is okay, but the service sucks especially when the older lady is not there. I went to pickup an order 45 mins after it was placed. Now they ran the credit got the money but I had to wait for them to prepare the order. The older guy didn't even know that there was an order waiting and when I said the order should've been ready he's going to me it will only take a minute "really and you're suppose to be running a business". And little Miss Attitude with the glasses blatantly lied and said that the order was supposed to be fixed once I got there. I called to verify with the person I was picking up the order for of course them knowing that I'm on my way to work said no it should have been ready. It took four of them to get the order together. And then the old guy is going to say now there's your order. NO APOLOGY at all. Hey dumb dumb it's your business you should make sure you treat your customers like the golden nuggets that they are, because without them you won't have a business. The elderly hispanic woman behind the counter has the most unpleasant demeanor & must not know the meaning of "customer service". The rest of the employees aren't too much better. Beyond the largely uncouth staff... I can not deny the quality of their product! Garrett's has dropped the ball and Lets Get Poppin picked it up & slapped a damn cap on it! The Cheesy Caramel is alright but I'd spend my last $4.29 on that Cheddar Bacon. The popcorn is not stale nor greasy, because it's dry popped. This place has a variety of popcorn and flavors to match. While the popcorn was tangy so were the workers. We decided to get 2 flavors starting with the bacon cheddar popcorn. This had a slight bacon flavor,"five kernels later",the bacon flavor was muted by the saltiness of the cheese flavoring. The next flavor we had was the jalapeno cheddar. That popcorn had much tang but the freshness just wasn't there. It was scooped out of a greasy metal tin in the corner. The jalapeno popcorn seemed to taste like it was made a few days ago, but it was still good. Besides popcorn the inside of this establishment was not very modern. The shop was filled with Betty boop decor and old fold-able chairs near the window. The workers had attitudes as stale as the decorations that accompanied them. When we asked the wrinkled woman if the bags were labeled she gave a look as if we violated her. Her face quickly scrunched after the question was asked. The only happy-ish person was the man who watched the workers. It looked as if they were being looked over because of their attitudes or previous ways. All in all if you want a boring bag of popcorn with boring staff this is your joint. If you like the smell of caramel, JUST GO TO GARRETS because this place aint no Gem. read more

This is a horrible place. Popcorn is good. Me and my husband were regulars. The last time he purchased the popcorn, he got sick and he tried to just exchange it and they said no exchanges and NO refunds. The next day we called the owner and he said the same thing, I explained we are regulars and that it made my husband's head hurt and we only wanted to exchange it with our receipt, he told me if he let us exchange it that he would have to do this for everybody. this is pretty good popcorn, but its not garretts. it will do when u cant get ur garrett fix on. i tried the cheese and caramel separately and i was impressed. the cheese was oily as i can see it all over the cheap plastic bags they put it in. it didnt have that saltiness that garretts have. the caramel was ok, however, it was more like toffee...more candy-like. the caramel was a thicker coating. not bad, would go there again. read more

In a nutshell, this place has some phenomenal popcorn. I live very close to the shop and I find myself avoiding it so I don't stop there every jewel and totally pig out. The cheese popcorn is cheesy, and not too greasy. It isn't terribly salty and had a really rich flavor. They offer several floaters of cheese popcorn, with my favorites being Bacon Cheddar and Garlic Parmesan. Of course no visit would be complete without a six dollar mix of cheese and caramel, mostly cheese. I don't even make it out of the parking lot before digging in and getting orange fingertips. I got my dad hooked on this stuff and deliver his fix way up to the north side. With gas prices the way they are now, that's saying a lot. read more

I've NEVER had a bad experience or stale popcorn, as I have gotten from Garrett's. The service has always been friendly, and the popcorn always fresh. I'm a frequent visitor to the west coast, and each time I go, I bring my family a treat from this gem on Chicago's south side, and they truly look forward to my visits...I hope not just for the popcorn but it is that good. This was my first time buying Poppin Popcorn. I purchased it from a school program for my granddaughter and from some of her friends. I purchased 3 bags for $51.00, a lot of money for 3 - 10 ounce bags of popcorn, but I thought it was to help the kids. Needless to say it was all stale, I had to feed it to the birds. I recently visited my home town of Chicago; I never can leave without going to Garrett Popcorn shop; however the line was two blocks long.
