The music was so good! If you like jazz and want a night out in Honolulu, this is the place. Rocky Holmes is an extraordinary musician, versatile on flute, sax, and clarinet. Not your average Honolulu live music joint. We went mid-week, around 9 pm, and practically had our choice of seats. They took song requests, which was amazing. What an unexpected gem! We decided to try out this lounge for the live jazz and since it was on our hotel property. We would return many times over for the lovely, intimate atmosphere and wonderful food and drinks. The small, well appointed lounge has wonderful, polite service. The live piano music began at 8:30, and on a Monday evening the space was nearly empty when we arrived (8:00). By the time the music began, the lounge had filled in a bit with a nice crowd. We had bourbon-based drinks which were good, but not necessarily stand-out. However we ordered and number of the small appetizers on the menu, and let me tell you the sliders were absolutely delicious! We ordered a second set. We also had the ginger and ahi tacos, shrimp and fish fingers. All quite good. Absolutely loved it here. Couldn't recommend it more for a very low-key, swanky lounge night! read more

For a nice spot to kick it, free valet parking, some delicious coconut cake, and to entertain your out of town guests, Lewers does the job. Although they say they have a strict dress code, I definitely saw some dress code breakers (male). I love me the coconut cake and the mac nut creme brulee was also really good. Service can be pretty crappy...so beware. Hostess at front was very friendly and helpful but waitresses seem to just have a job to do. Last time I was here, she forgot to give us our fritto misto, which was fine since we were ready to leave, but took forever to get her attention. She apologized for the oversight. I would have to say though, that I am not a fan of live jazz, at least what I've heard here. It's very...upbeat/peppy, which kind of gives me a headache. read more

This is one of my favorite spots in Waikiki and I make it a point to visit every time I'm in town (a few times a year-ish). The same group of musicians has been playing here for years and it literally never fails me. There is a dress code, people. This is a nice place inside a hotel - keep it classy because it's meant to be that at. It's very dark in here, some low overhead lights and upscale, lounge style chairs. It's one of those spots where you order a glass of wine or your favorite spirit and sit back to enjoy the show. Go with your favorite song requests because I can almost guarantee these folks know it! They have an iPad or tablet where they look up the music and it's insane the breadth of the music they can play. The two gentlemen are fun and enjoy the banter with the audience. This is a great "night-cap" establishment. Every now and then I do see a few people get up and dance, but for the most part, it's just a sit back and enjoy the show kind of thing. Nuts and chocolate assortments adorn the tables and drinks are easily $10-15/glass. Wait staff is friendly, bartenders are generous with the alcohol and the entertainment is, well, entertaining. Dapperly decked out in cocktail attire, my BF & I ventured to the Lewer's Lounge for a few birthday cocktails. Thank the Lord for this 5-star find because we've officially crowned it our favorite cocktail bar! Finding a high class bar is a toughy in this town and its always fun to play tourist in Waikiki! Walking into the Lewers Lounge is like taking a time machine back to the Rat Pack days of Frank Sinatra. It's a small dark lounge with alcoves of seating where one can relax with friends and stop to smell the roses...errr excuse me, martinis. On that particular night there was a piano and base duo who played jazz and classic Sinatra crooner songs like "The Way You Look Tonight." I half expected Dean Martin to come out from the woodwork and start harmonizing with the base player/singer. Am I in Hawaii or is this an episode from "Mad Men"? Our waitress brought out a small selection of nuts and we sipped on their specialty cocktails. I had the Strawberries and Basil which was heavenly! The two flavors are an excellent pairing and it reminded me of the time I had fresh strawberries with basil ice cream in Paris. A dim, sexy but thankfully not smoky jazz lounge at the Halekulani Hotel, this place was an elegant reprise from some of the more touristy attractions in the 'hood. If you get a kick out of trying new, inventive cocktails (or enjoying delicious versions of your classic favorites), be sure to head here and chat up the talented bartenders. The music is a great feature but happily it doesn't overwhelm by being too loud, and is a perfect, subtle background to the beautiful surroundings and delicious beverages. While I highly recommend spending you moolah on the drinks, the food isn't bad at all either! The highlight was their highly recommended coconut cake, which was light and fluffy and just heavenly. Note: the bar requests proper shirts and pants for guys and 'evening attire' for the ladies, whatever that means. This place is for the grown and sexy with a wallet to match. As many have said before me, if you're wanting to dress up or get stylish and have a very classy, upscale, relaxing, intimate evening with a date or small group of friends, this is the place. The live jazz music just adds to the ambiance of sophistication. Plus there's a dress code, too. As far as prices go, you get what you pay for. Drinks start at $12 and so does the food BUT you get a super proper cocktail. These are by far some of the best cocktails I've had in a long while. The food was okay, really I don't think you come here for that, you come for the drinks and the ambiance. I personally wouldn't call this place a weekly haunt but I'm glad a place like this exsists coz it's nice to have an option where there isn't drunk mokes in athletic gear double fisting pitchers of Steinlager in your face. In Waikiki, after meandering between a never-ending barrage of 808 bass, Trinidad James blaring out of windows (both of businesses and cars passing by), and hot girls handing out colorful propaganda swearing that their club has the best "music" and drink specials, it's nice to know that a place like Lewers Lounge can be found. Located inside the Halekulani Hotel, this gem of a time warp is the perfect place to relax, lay back, and get away from it all. One of the many highlights is the ambiance. I don't drink, but I love the bar here; beautiful, dark, highly polished mahogany that instantly reminds you of the days of prohibition. I wasn't even born during that period but still I can appreciate the timeless elegance represented thereby. The lighting and furnishings further accentuate the era. Soft, cozy, two-seaters along with spacious 4 to 6 top tables are sure to cater to whatever size group you may bring. Most of all, however, I adore the music. Maggie Herron and Rockford Holmes are sure to pleasure the ears of even the most discerning of jazz tastes. Lady Magdalene masterfully plays the piano while singing a plethora of ballads with such sexy soulfulness that Diana Krall and Toni Braxton would both be jealous. She is complemented by Rocky and his trifecta of woodwinds. Watch and listen as he beautifully executes his musical talents upon the clarinet, flute, and saxophone, I love it when he starts to feel the music in his soul and goes off on one of his solo spots. I cannot speak to the alcohol, but one of my friends always gets the single malt scotch; he says its one of the best he's ever tasted. I CAN speak to the delicious vanilla-macadamian nut coffee. Served in a French press, the taste is very smooth and rich with macadamia overtone on the front, slightly bitter on the back end, with that perfect hint of vanilla. It does not seem to be very caffeinated either, as I am easily able to sleep after finishing an entire press myself. Nets about 3 cups. I have found it very difficult to find very many upscale lounges in Honolulu. To say that I am happy to have found Lewers Lounge would be putting it mildly. This is the place to go if you have guests in town to entertain and they're 40+, like it dark, romantic, classy and expect service. This place reminds of me of a new york lounge crawling with hedgefunders and aristocrats but they're actually in Hawaii on vacation. They have a drink menu designed by Dale Degraff. He's the super uber best bartender from new york that's on the food network, travel channel and fine living. Cocktails are pricey but worth it because they're big pours and they pour top shelf. My favorite is the Chocolate Dream Martini 2 ounces Chocolate Van Gogh Vodka 2 ounces white creme de cacao vigorously chilled and served straight up with a chocolate twisted stick. I use to go all the time, but at $12-$15 a cocktail, I just whip it up at home and throw on a jazz c.d. and eat pistachios. read more

The Lewers Lounge is strangely connected to me learning a few seemingly random life lessons: Lesson One: Don't Run Yellow Lights When Your Friends are Trying to Follow (They End up Running Reds) Our usually (not this time) erudite friend decided to tail me to the Lewers Lounge and ended up getting pulled over by Honolulu's finest. After pleading his case he fortunately found them sympathetic. Maybe the real lesson's not to follow crazy drivers. Lesson Two: Classy Jazz Lounges at Five Star Hotels are NOT Ideal Places for Fifteen Person Bachelor Parties Twice (neither was my doing) I ended up at the Lewers Lounge for a bachelor party. The first time, I was equally horrified and entertained watching my already slightly inebriated friends impatiently eating food off of some of the yet to be cleared tables (I wish I was kidding). This was after the group was kindly asked to leave (kicked out of) the actual modern lounge area and moved to the open air more plantation style space. I apologized to our stellar server (who actually seemed happy and amused to work a more blue collar crowd). The second party (totally different group of guys) was just as unsuccessful, but far less embarrassing. I explained that it's more of a couples place (or a four friends talking quietly place), but like the first time I was just along for the ride. :) Lesson Three: "Round Bout Midnight" is Way Better Without Lyrics My favorite Jazz recording is Thelonious Sphere Monk's solo piano version of "Round Bout Midnight". It's a melancholy masterpiece that ironically makes me happy. When last at the Lewers Lounge that's what I requested. Everything started off beautifully, the slightly dissonant chords, the lingering notes, then the pianist started singing....AAARGH! WHY? It was as unsettling to me as frosted Cheerios (which I happen to think are sacrilegious). Anyway, despite a myriad of different ridiculous side stories certain things never change at the Lewers Lounge: Killer Customer Relations - They're even polite when throwing you out, this place puts on a nightly guest services clinic. Amazing Atmosphere - I love how chill this place is. Perfect for conversation. Worst customer service ever. I went out with three of my girlfriends and the wait staff here almost ruined our night out. From the beginning, there was no one there to greet us. We weren't sure if we were to seat ourselves or wait for someone, but after a while of lingering, we realized that no one was going to say hello. We finally sat down next to a large party. After another couple of minutes of waiting, the waitress finally came up to us and showed us the menu. The drinks were average, but what was absolutely mind blowing was the total lack of service, particularly a lounge in a highly rated hotel.Throughout the night, we were completely, and almost intentionally, ignored. I don't know what we did or if it was a way that we looked, but we were nearly invisible to our waitress. I know this because we watched her serve other customers (including others that came after us) and not us. We tried to be as polite and as reasonable as we could, but it was obvious that we were not getting any decent service in return for our efforts. It only got worse when it came time to close out our tab. Apparently, she thought that we were a part of the large party next to us (Which doesn't make sense because we never spoke to them the entire night) and put our orders on their tab. Instead of correcting her mistake, she told us to work it out with the guy who was paying for it. So, we had to go up to this complete stranger, work out on our own what we had to pay him, and give him the cash that was owed. Again, let me reiterate that this was a mistake that she admitted to and WE had to fix it ourselves. I complained to a manager before leaving which is something that I only do when push comes to shove. I will never, ever, ever go back there again and I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

5 stars out of me is more rare than running into back to back quads in a game of poker. So it says a lot when I say this is by far the swankiest, low key jazz lounges around the world. And for a 1 person/drink minimum, you're looking at around $25 dollars (for two people) + tip for outstanding ambience, music, and attentive service. Easily a great way to spend 3-4 hours of a evening enjoying with that special someone. If you've ever watched the movie "The Score" (2001) with Edward Norton and Robert Dinero, this place puts their montreal jazz lounge to shame. This hidden gem is highly recommended if you are visiting waikiki... We had our company outing at Lewers Lounge and it was world-class experience. The ambiance was elegant, the live jazz music by Maggie and Rocky set the perfect mood, and the cocktails and service were spectacular. The ambiance of this place is awesome. The live jazz music was really cool too. My only complaint is the pupu's were ok, nothing great. I thought the wine list wasn't that great either. For the price I think there are much better places to get wine (or martinis). I noticed when we got there (we are younger and local) it took us a while to get waited on. My girlfriends and I came here after our dinner at Nobu's. Lewers Lounge is located in the Halekulani hotel and is a short walk from Waikiki Parc (where Nobu's is located).This is a nice place to have after dinner drinks in a relaxing atmosphere and they usually have a duo playing jazz or piano music on Saturday nights. At the time we went, it was fairly crowded with a mix of couples, hotel guests and locals. Drinks are on the pricier side, my glass of Chivas was $14. We met a guy there who told us that the lounge wouldn't allow him in because he was wearing shorts so they gave him a pair of slacks which were about two inches too short. Fancy, shmancy, a definite place to "hide out" if you're local--no one I know will ever think to look for me here! I am 20-something, local, and (pretty much) broke, but I am also a closet jazz lover who cannot stand loud places full of my obnoxious sh*t-faced peers. As the others have said it's dim and romantic, so, yes, dress up as in classy and not trashy. In my opinion, I probably wouldn't come with my girlfriends for a girl's night out, as Lewer's Lounge's atmosphere is most suitable for a date/double date kind of outing. I want to say the drinks are traditional, but I'm not sure if that would be accurate since afterall, I am only in my 20's and probably naive when it comes to that kind of stuff (hey, I'm still learning here). But I really did enjoy the Bee's Knees. YUM! Gin, honey, and lemons. Not too sharp, not too sweet, just right. I'm craving it right now! I really felt like I should have been in black & white and wearing a Cruela DeVille fur coat. So far, this is hands down my favorite lounge/bar I've ever been to in... the world? Lewers Lounge was a classy lounge with a great ambiance. I could tell after walking into the hotel we were in for a treat, as the hotel is very classy as well. The service was good, although after a while we started waiting for quite a while before we saw anybody again. The selection of food and beverages was very high class. What most bars offer as their "Top Shelf" selections, this bar offers as their "well" drinks. This lounge is another example of you get what you pay for. I would suggest this establishment to anybody wanting a classy night on the town. There is a dress code for the lounge (although I could tell it wasn't always fully enforced), but I would suggest really dressing nicely if you are planning on going. read more

I'm going back and forth on the number of stars to assign this place. On the one hand it gets a 5 for ambiance. It's a dark lounge, with comfortable chairs and great music. It's the type of place I'd want to sit for hours with a good solid drink, a churchill cigar, and my thoughts. But my drink wasn't good enough to make me want to stay. I'm a brown liquor lover. My drink of choice is usually a Manhattan, a Sazerac, or an Old Fashioned. If I am feeling more optimistic I might get a Negroni. Still, you can tell I'm into the classic cocktails---the dark, brooding, slightly sarcastic ones. I should also clarify: I am from New York. And when I was last in New York (a two year stint) I made sure to test out the top cocktail lounges. When I found my favorite I'd ask bartenders about their technique: "What do you do to your cocktail that makes it so much better than everyone else's?" A lot of times it boiled down to the quality of the ingredients: hand-made bitters, premium liquors, the best small batch vermouth. You get the picture. But a lot of it is also the technique. Classic cocktails can be more complicated than they seem---a good drink is not only what goes into a drink; it's how all those things are mixed together. So, I was stunned when the bartender at Lewars Lounge told me he serves his Sazerac on the rocks, instead of chilling the glass first. I was also stunned when he said he muddles the lemon peel with a sugar cube. I ordered a Manhattan. It was fine, not great. Not even that good. It was fine. I've made a better Manhattan at home. It was $12. Coming from New York this seems affordable to me. I don't mind paying for a perfect drink. This one was not. I was bummed. I would go back for the ambiance, but from hereon out I'll stick to scotch, neat. read more

One of my favorite intimate spots in Waikiki. And having the best coconut cake doesn't hurt. Piano, bass and sultry voices singing jazz numbers....it's simply perfect. It is growing harder to find a upscale jazz lounge where you can have a drink, some warm nuts, and fantastic service. The Lewers Lounge, on the first floor of the Halekulani, is a fantastic find and worth of one of my few five star reviews. The standard drink menu features your classic cocktails and some new specialty twists that aim to please. The drinks are well poured to perfection in a careful symmetry of alcohol, temperature, and service equipment. Warm nuts and olives come standard but they do offer some nibbles if the mood fancies you. The ambiance is gorgeous in the classic styling with beautifully polished wood paneling, comfortable chairs, and a great jazz vibe. There is a covered patio area as well if you want something more resort. The service was top notch with the servers coming through at the perfect times and with the wait for a drink very minimal in my book. There is a dress code so be sure to wear a collared shirt. I don't know how they truly feel about jeans since it isnt supposedly allowed but I have seen people in there with em. I personally wouldn't take the chance though. Valet parking available in the Halekulani, if not, there is self serve parking across the street in the Waikiki Parc/Halekulani lot with a 4 hour validation from the bar. I honestly felt like I stepped into another world when I walked into to the dark and swanky room that is Lewers Lounge. Set in the beautiful Halekulani, it is truly a hidden gem! I just wish I had been wearing nicer shoes--I felt a little underdressed with my slippers on! My friend and I sat at the bar to enjoy a couple of cocktails. First round: a delicious dirty martini, second: glass of the house Malbec, I think (this was a few weeks ago, and many bars ago in my holiday pau hana bar tour). Even though I still think this place is a little too stuffy for my taste, the bartender took great care of us, and at one point the piano player even came over to ask us if we wanted to request any songs. I'll never forget his face however, when my friend asked him if he knew anything by Aerosmith! :) I would definitely recommend this place if anyone is looking for an upscale, romantic type atmosphere to sip on a couple of drinks. We walked in on a Friday night ... lights dim and a jazz singer jamming to her piano with her sax player crooning away. The cocktail selection was to die for and service was spot on. It's nice to mingle in a bar that doesn't have the familiar Waikiki vibe ... away from the cheesy Alohe Oe or Tiny Bubbles and distracting aloha shirts. Patrons were all dressed to the nine in lovely dresses and suits accordingly ... and definitely looked like a much more sophisticated bunch. There's no dance floor, but if the music moves you, get up and slow dance with one of your favorites. If you decide to do this, make sure your behind doesn't make up the entire view of the people seated behind you. I know it's hard to believe, but not everyone appreciates the exclusive and continuous opportunity to stare at your back side. 2. Forget the cocktails, and order the gin tonic. The gin is smooth, the tonic is extra fresh. You'll want to drink it like juice - resist the temptation. It is strong. 3. Tip your musicians! They're putting on a show for you - and believe it or not, they're not making the big bucks. So put your hand in your pocket and give a little for what you're getting. 4. Make recommendations - in fact, have a few songs you'd like to hear in mind before you get here. If you're going to tip anyway, you may as well hear one of your favorite jams. 5. Dress well - in fact, leave the rubber slippas at home and dress to kill. Why not? 6. If there's a wait for a table, leave your name and then relax on the couches/chairs right outside. You can still hear the music, and you can spend some time just relaxing. Get off your phone, close your eyes, and get lost in the music. No one will judge you for it. There are lots of little nooks where you can sit with friends or a special someone and enjoy the live jazz--piano and bass with vocals. You feel like you've been teleported back to the '20s. Service was fabulous as well. Our server Misty was attentive and friendly. Their specialty cocktails are divine! My fiance ordered a Whiskey Smash which he enjoyed and I had some sort of chocolate martini (can't recall the exact name). It was a piece of spiked chocolate heaven! Even came with a little chocolate swizzle stick. Misty also brought out some pistacios to nibble on while we sat back and relished in the sophistocated class that is Lewers Lounge. Cocktails are a little pricey ($11) but well worth it. You need to dress up a little, so come prepared. I look forward to our next Waikiki date night, we'll definitely be back! read more

A real escape from the overcrowded and commercial Waikiki, a truly elegant place with wonderful live Jazz music to soak in holding a good glass of a classic drink. Sazerac was good and not overly strong, maybe a bit too sweet. Negroni was impeccable, so was the Fritto Misto which also came in a gentle portion. read more

Lewers Lounge is the classiest jazz bar in Honolulu!!! This is the spot to go for a memorable date-night!!! I have been going to Lewers for over a year now, and I am never disappointed. Located in the Halekulani Resort Hotel, the venue is absolutely perfect. Beautiful dark wood paneling, low light, an amazing bar stocked with all of your top shelf wines and liquors. The staff is AMAZING. Professional at all times, quick, helpful, charming, friendly, and always attentive. I have become friends with several of the staff, and the treatment I receive as a close friend is the same as the first time I visited their bar. As for the entertainment, Maggie is an amazing pianist and singer, and keeps the evening going with a long list of classic jazz songs and is able to fulfill every request that I have ever asked. She partners with a variety of accompanying artists, all of whom are brilliant in their own right. However, my favorite and her most frequent partner is Rocky, who is fantastic on the woodwinds. the singer and musician are of world class, place is quiet and romantic, the cock tail looks good to me However, the manager's ability of crisis relations is below my expectations... Yes I look young to my age but I showed him my ID copy and with all my friends aged 40-60's my bank credit card my bookings with ID...he keep saying I can offer you soft drinks I told him to check next door the trumps about my booking he refused and make my whole night drinking water without any showing of sorry ...never happened in other place of the world at least they will say sorry softly not keep saying no which make people feel very unhappy to come here Then we saw someone been rudely get out because he wear slipper, i saw the guy 's unhappy face , I think they can think of a way to make the life time experience better...most people come here for fun...actually I don't care my next table wear swimming wear..just like to see some happy faces I really think the Asian who like here should bring your ID with you ..I'm 32...still been questioned...lols...
