My husband and I have been going to Lewers for the past 4.5 years now. My husband and I just got back from the Washington D.C. and stayed at Halekulani for a couple nights after our wedding/ceremony this past Sunday. The team at Lewers Lounge is excellent!! They are not only quick with drinks but very hospitable and helpful with finding seats. With Halekulani being a 5 star hotel, I feel the drinks here are reasonably priced. Drinks also come with nicely seasoned peanuts and chocolate covered orante peels. Our favorite bartender there is Wing Liu. Hes a very personable and attentive bartender. We enjoy sitting at the bar and talking with him/seeing him make my drinks. My go to drink is the Lychee Martini or just a quick glass of the house champagne. read more

I've been going to Lewers Lounge for almost ten years. In the beginning, it was a dependably classy place with excellent service, music, and ambiance. Those days are apparently over. When my husband and I visited this week, we were not greeted at the entrance, so we sat ourselves at a table. Soon after sitting down, a waitress approached and said loudly "Ready to order?" Not "Hello" or "Welcome" or "Have you dined with us before?" We hadn't even opened the menu yet, so we asked her to check in in a few minutes. A minute or so later the waitress brought us complimentary almonds and chocolate covered orange rinds. The chocolate orange rinds must be from a new supplier, because they were not as good as the ones Lewers Lounge used to stock in years past. I had heard that Lewers Lounge nixed their dress code, and it shows. Now you can roll up in shorts and slippers. Once in a while, I enjoy dressing up and feeling fancy, which is hard to do in Hawaii since everywhere is so casual (see also: Hy's, Alan Wong's, Roy's, etc). Despite Maggie Heron and accompaniment sounding great (no surprises there--she's the reason this review has two stars instead of one) my husband and I decided the new more casual, less gracious Lewers Lounge experience wasn't worth the price tag. We sat on the veranda for a little while listening to the music. A waiter approached and nicely said, "Hello, would you like to order something off the menu?" We declined and left. Conveniently located at the Halekulani at the far end of the garden square and near the Orchids restaurant, Lewers Lounge has both an intimate, yet inviting ambiance. Bf and I decided to stop by after the weekly fireworks show on Kahanamoku Beach, and there was still plenty of seating to choose from upon walking in. We were quickly greeted, and we were able to take our pick from the available spots. The dimly lit room, coupled with the soothing glow of lights against the bottled spirits, provided a classy and relaxed backdrop to the live jazz performances. Service was attentive and friendly without being overbearing and the food and drinks, although on the pricier end, were pretty tasty. Would recommend checking this place out at least once! Tip: be sure to look up the attire/dress code ahead of time, which consists of classier resort wear for women; and collared shirts, dress slacks, and closed toed shoes for men. read more

Change of pace! This place reminds me of hotel bars back home in Seattle. I mean it is technically a hotel bar. You may not necessarily sought out for it since you can find similar bars with same ambiance if not better there. But it is unique. And in Waikiki, this is truly a gem. Such a relaxing spot! It's almost has that speak easy-ish theme. Not quite. Love the dark ambiance, dim lights and jazz of course. Every table has a good view of the performers. Some tables are darker than the others. Very romantic! We love! Drink menu is simple enough: cocktails, wine and spirits. Champagne has two dry and some prosecco on it. Drinks are around $16 and up: some wines for around $13 a glass. They even have some food items like lobster roll (yummm) and plenty of dessert. Coconut cake being their most popular one! Since we just stuffed our face at dinner, we opted for dirty martinis and a dessert. This is where a girl in me comes out. I'm not a big dessert person but I also didn't want to drink more. So I did what anyone with such dilemmas would do. Ask for the prettiest thing they can do for dessert! And lo behold: they delivered!! I truly believe in ask and you shall receive :) The worst thing they can do is say no. Not sure what I ate but it was a stunning strawberry fluffiness with lychee sorbet, kiwis and meringues. And it was truly pretty. Our waitress wanted to make sure I got my pretty dessert: she went and got it from the restaurant menu! Thank you , kind lady! The musicians also came by and said hello during their breaks! That was lovely. And they had a special player all the way from New York City: Alan Wong. Cozy little location to enjoy a night out with the misses. Drinks are a little pricey but the ambiance and the live music is well worth it and sets the tone. This is the only place that I am aware of that plays live jazz on the island. If you want to impress a chic that is out of your league bring her here. She might make the assumption that you have some sort of class. Don't say much, listen to the live band and periodically whisper sweetness in her ear. Came here for new years eve and was thoroughly satisfied. The bar has a dress code (so a bit more high end), great live music, delicious coconut cake, professional staff and holds audiences aged 30-50. The bar peaks after 10:30, which is when the jazz band came to play tonight. It gets loud once the band starts playing, but they were really good so I would chime in listening. It's a great place to chill after dinner, as a couple or even solo. The place definitely feels like a hotel bar because its inside Halekulani hotel, and it's just across from House Without a Key. Most people I observed were couples or family (without the children). The bar seemed to have a lot of regular customers and close-knit staff, and I see why because the staff is so friendly and professional! I got the coconut cake paired with a riesling, and it was just what I wanted. The cake is fluffy, with cream in between and topped with coconut flakes. A huge debt of thanks goes to a comrade in the cocktailing game for pointing me to Lewers. Situated in the Halekulani hotel, one of the nicest in Waikiki, Lewers Lounge is a total throwback to earlier, more elegant days. A jazz and cocktail bar by design, the plush, wood-paneled interior is set in brown, tan, and orange tones with nice warm soft mood lighting. The space is exquisite yet simple - very clean in its decór. Off white marble gives way to dark ash wood floors and a clean, warm acoustic sound for the jazz duo playing a nice lounge set. Hidden off from the ridiculousness of the strip, the clientele here looked like they fit right in - well dressed, proper and sitting in full enjoyment of the delicious drinks that these true barmen offer. Yes, the menu reads like a mix of classic craft cocktails, new martinis and traditional tropicals - but done right. At $10-$14 for cocktails, you'll definitely pay for the ambiance and quality, but the value is beyond present. My drinking partners and I scored a nice couch/chairs combo in the back corner and sipped on expertly made REAL Mai Tais and a strawberry basil martini while listening to the duo hum out covers and fun lounge/jazz tunes. The service was a little slow, but it looked like they were more crowded than expected at 11pm on a Monday. Regardless of the pace, our cocktail waitress did what she could with apologies to keep us in cocktails and snacky-nuts. My only regrets with Lewers are that I didn't discover it sooner, and that I had to leave when I did. This will easily be my first stop for cocktails when I return to the strip... mainly because it feels like it's miles away, yet still serves an authentic tiki drink. As the gentleman who directed me here said: "They don't make bars like this anymore." He's so right. I wish they did, though. Still awesome! First, they now serve ABSINTHE! NO JOKE!! It's $20 a glass, but you only need one glass... uh, trust me. Hahaha... I was SO good after just one drink. Obviously, when there's a drink with a reputation for seeing green fairies, you need to try it for yourself. Have fun, and don't say I didn't warn you! :) Second, the stools at their bar have changed. They used to be these beautiful bucket -shaped mahogany chairs with cognac-colored weathered leather and brass rivets. They were soooo comfortable and fitting for the decor and ambiance! Now they're these boring stools that (to me, anyway) look too nouveau for the the décor. It makes me sad. Third, they used to have this Andes candy-flavored alcoholic beverage that was served in a martini glass. It was so delicious. But now, it's gone! Fine tropical living. The Halekulani Hotel was built by Robert Lewers in 1907. Its green interior lawns and high ceilings, with open breezeways, are a perfect way to cool the space in the tropical sun. Today's buildings seem to be built with the idea that anything with enough electricity pumped into it can withstand the environment, but earlier buildings were designed to use the environment naturally. There are two parts to the Lewers Lounge. The famous piano bar is enclosed, and has a dress code: collared shirt, slacks, and dress shoes. The other part is just outside, behind open floor-to-ceiling plantation shutters, with a view of the interior lawn. In casual dress, we were served by waitresses dressed in lovely white linen gowns. Our cocktail napkins were also made of white linen. We enjoyed a chocolate bento box: five different kinds of chocolate goodies. My Lady chose two glasses of cabernet to go with it, while I enjoyed two pina coladas. This delightful interlude cost us $65.97 + tip. read more

This is the first jazz lounge/bar I've been to in Hawaii. It definitely has a "boojy" vibe to it. No shorts, covered shoes for guys, upscale, and expensive. Sometimes getting dolled up and going to these kinds of places is fun, but the minute I walked in, I felt uncomfortable. The waitress was kind of snobby and even though my friend & I were wearing "fancy/dressy shorts," she called us out on it. The drinks were expensive ($12 each) but good. Definitely strong so atleast I felt like I was somewhat getting my monies worth. However, the food was a rip. We got a pizza that was as big as the old-school "Little Charlies" we use to eat back in grade-school. Then to top it off, it was COLD! It was like eating frozen pizza that was still frozen! Not sure if it was suppose to be like that because of the "style" of pizza it was, but it definitely wasn't $19 worth, or whatever ridiculous price it costed. The french onion soup on the other hand was good. But then again, not $16 good! I like local bars and dive bars, so I'm not one to check out a fancy bar like Lewer's Lounge. But, one night we were out and about and decided to stop in for a couple of drinks and I loved it. There's valet parking out front and bar is just a short walk down the hall. It's not clearly marked, so it's easy to miss. When we got there around 10 pm, it was only half full and there was plenty of open seating. The menu lists their specialty drinks, but they have a full bar as well. The drinks are around $15 - $25 per drink, which is about double what I normally pay for drinks - but they are so delicious it's worth it. The live music was really nice and you never feel rushed or pressured by waiters. We stayed for a little over an hour and for two people our tab was about $60, including tip. They do validate the valet parking - so be sure to ask about it. And this may say more about my station in life than I'd care to reveal on Yelp, but their bathrooms have heated seats. And previous to this night, I had no idea such a thing existed! It's quite wonderful. By the time we left at 11:30 pm, the place was packed and even the tables outside the bar were filled. There was a surprisingly large crowd of regulars, considering it's located in a Waikiki hotel. It's a nice change of pace from the rowdier bars on the Waikiki strip. Very impreseed with this place! They have some of the best drinks you can get on the island! They have very good jazz every night. Mostly piano music, but they also have trios. This is the kind of place that makes you feel like you are somewhere other than Hawaii. Sure they have Mai Tai's and the infamous Tropical Itch, but you can also belly up and order a Manhatten, Side Car, Mint Julep or even a Pimm's Cup! Yup, a little bit of everything at this bar. My first thought when I entereed this place was a lounge you could find in NYC. Very nice. Not over-the-top though. You can come in here in jeans and a nice comfortable shirt. For the ladies, anything other than a batheing suit. It really does not get busy in here. There is a nice bar you can sit at or some comfortable sofa seating to relax i and enjoy the atmospehere. Legendary! In my opinion, by far, the best bar in Waikiki. Firstly, they have live jazz every single night! Set in an intimate candle-lit room: totally romantic. Secondly, they are the only place that servers Calamansi (Golden Lime) based drinks. It's distinct flavor (like a lime but with a tang orange sweetness), makes every cocktail you've ever had different and new. My Calamansi Mint Julep was simply amazing. Third, Lewers lounge is set inside the five star Hale Kulani hotel, where stories... happen. One night I was there, I saw this gorgeous girl in a sun-dress walk by (toned body, large catchy eyes, and delicate features) and proceed to have a personal shopping session with some old lady. It turns out, as I found out a couple nights later, she was the reigning Ms. Hawaii!! Another night, my friend and I see an Asian guy walks in with a couple of Asian girls. The guy was hideous, buck teeth bulging out of his mouth (but not too old). The girls were clinging onto him but with hollowed looks in their eyes. The girls were not very pretty, but were dressed pretty slutty. The guy, of course, sits down and orders Champagne bottle service. They start talking in a couple of Asian languages I don't know. My friend turns and whispers to me that the girl are Korean, they're saying how stupid the guy is. The guy is speaking Japanese. They were communicating only in broken English. Wow. I don't even know what to say... E.P.I.C (You need closed toe shoes, collared shirt, and long pants. We had planned on staying for a few to digest our food before we hit the town for some dancing. This is a nice bar in a very nice hotel. The staff (and clients) appear mostly Japanese. The drinks are potent but made just average. I have much better bartenders before (see my San Francisco reviews). Yes, it has a dress code - resort dress. Which is a nice alternative to the typical Waikiki establishment. This makes a nice change of pace when you need it. I am a jazz fan. My collection includes Miles, Ornette, Coletrane, the Marsalis brothers, etc. The night I went there was a two piece group playing classical sets on piano and various horns. I had this faint impression that I was Bill Murray in 'Lost in Translation'. Because this is one of my favorite movies, maybe I should have felt honored. Next time I will go to The Dragon Upstairs in ChinaTown for better music, better energy and a better time. read more

Spent my 25th birthday here. If you've never been, you're missing out. Hands down, one of the best entertainments alongside excellent service. The Halekulani experience truly is one of a kind. Before the night started, I was greeted by the musicians/singer and word got out about my birthday, so she handed me a signed copy of her latest album. Amazing! I really wasn't expecting that. We sat dead center of the intimate atmosphere. Note to self, lighting is pretty dim, but I guess it enhances the experience. The room is set up to host small parties who just want to sit and relax and maybe talk in between music numbers. I never had to worry about our conversation getting g out. Pretty intimate! Drinks were pretty great here. Fairly strong, so I'd say they don't skimp out on the hards. Of course, I was blessed with Halekulani's signature haupia cake. So good!! Overall experience was pretty amazing. I'd probably be back here in the next week or so. Definitely a place I'd bring someone. Social media was pretty crazy that night. The musicians are located in one corner, opposite the bar, with tables along the wall and some strategically scattered in the room's center and around its columns. Although space is tight, you still manage to feel like you have your own space and privacy as you listen to the music. We arrived around 9:30pm and checked in with the hostess. The lounge was full at the time, so we had a short wait before we were able to get a table. f you also have to wait to be seated, I wouldn't worry. It feels like there are always tables opening up, as people tend to stay for a few songs and leave. I ordered an Old Fashion and he ordered a rum and coke. The rum and coke was adorable, as the coke came in a mini glass Coca Cola bottle. They also brought complimentary snacks: some nuts and chocolate covered gummies. The staff doesn't come around very often, which is nice if you're engrossed in the music. (Not so nice if you're trying to get the check -- or another drink!) Will definitely be back! The ambiance here is great and very cozy. Very great spot especially for date night. They offer a small food menu as well as dessert and coffee/tea besides your full bar. The music was so good! If you like jazz and want a night out in Honolulu, this is the place. Rocky Holmes is an extraordinary musician, versatile on flute, sax, and clarinet. Not your average Honolulu live music joint. We went mid-week, around 9 pm, and practically had our choice of seats. They took song requests, which was amazing. For a nice spot to kick it, free valet parking, some delicious coconut cake, and to entertain your out of town guests, Lewers does the job. Although they say they have a strict dress code, I definitely saw some dress code breakers (male). I love me the coconut cake and the mac nut creme brulee was also really good. Service can be pretty crappy...so beware. Hostess at front was very friendly and helpful but waitresses seem to just have a job to do. Last time I was here, she forgot to give us our fritto misto, which was fine since we were ready to leave, but took forever to get her attention. She apologized for the oversight. I would have to say though, that I am not a fan of live jazz, at least what I've heard here. It's very...upbeat/peppy, which kind of gives me a headache. read more

What an unexpected gem! We decided to try out this lounge for the live jazz and since it was on our hotel property. We would return many times over for the lovely, intimate atmosphere and wonderful food and drinks. The small, well appointed lounge has wonderful, polite service. The live piano music began at 8:30, and on a Monday evening the space was nearly empty when we arrived (8:00). By the time the music began, the lounge had filled in a bit with a nice crowd. We had bourbon-based drinks which were good, but not necessarily stand-out. However we ordered and number of the small appetizers on the menu, and let me tell you the sliders were absolutely delicious! We ordered a second set. We also had the ginger and ahi tacos, shrimp and fish fingers. All quite good. Absolutely loved it here. Couldn't recommend it more for a very low-key, swanky lounge night! read more

This is one of my favorite spots in Waikiki and I make it a point to visit every time I'm in town (a few times a year-ish). The same group of musicians has been playing here for years and it literally never fails me. There is a dress code, people. This is a nice place inside a hotel - keep it classy because it's meant to be that at. It's very dark in here, some low overhead lights and upscale, lounge style chairs. It's one of those spots where you order a glass of wine or your favorite spirit and sit back to enjoy the show. Go with your favorite song requests because I can almost guarantee these folks know it! They have an iPad or tablet where they look up the music and it's insane the breadth of the music they can play. The two gentlemen are fun and enjoy the banter with the audience. This is a great "night-cap" establishment. Every now and then I do see a few people get up and dance, but for the most part, it's just a sit back and enjoy the show kind of thing. Nuts and chocolate assortments adorn the tables and drinks are easily $10-15/glass. Wait staff is friendly, bartenders are generous with the alcohol and the entertainment is, well, entertaining. Roam the hotel grounds before or after the show, take part in their bidet and enjoy a nice evening in Waikiki! read more
