Dr. Messler is the absolute best. My dog developed a neurological disorder, things got complicated. I put all my trust in Dr. Messler to guide me through my dog's last 6 years, which were happy ones. I love that she gave me a hug when I finally put my little girl down. I had 2 dogs over 35 years, and they were both patients of Lexington Veterinary Associates. I miss that really hunky-looking vet, Dr. Reed, but everyone there is great. The gentleman who works the front desk/answers the phone is perfection. Very professional, but plenty of sincerity and warmth. I couldn't ask for more from a vet. Unfortunately, I live in NH now with a new dog. Praying I get someone half as good. read more

We've been coming to this vet clinic for the past 11 years, since we moved back to Boston. I went here since my parents used to take our family dogs here when I was a kid. Kevin and Sylvia who work at the front desk are really nice. They know my dog by name and are very warm and welcoming when we arrive. Dr. Applegate is the best vet. She's so knowledgeable, compassionate, and understanding. She's kept my dog alive and thriving to this ripe age of 18 years old. I appreciate that she respects my wishes as a dog owner, as the person who knows my dog best, but also teaches me what I need to know as I haven't had a senior dog before. My dog has had a number of health issues over the years, and this vet and all their experts have been so helpful. My dog, Juneau and I are so glad we switched to Lexington Veterinary Associates from Kindess Animal Hospital couple years ago! https://www.yelp.com/biz/kindness-animal-hospital-waltham The only con are that they have more limited hours than maybe some other vet offices like no weekend times. so in that case, we will just supplement with a pet med, urgent care. The staff here have been extremely kind and understanding of her. Aside from the peak hours, they are fairly easy to contact over phone and I've almost always had positive interactions with the front desk. I have pet insurance and they've been responsive to send me the medical chart and invoice electronically so I can file a claim. Thankfully, the main issues we've dealt with our skin, rashes and paw hotspot sensitivities. Over the years she has developed noticeable general anxiety specifically to other dogs. We've been working with our trainer as well to manage this. They are very helpful for me to call ahead of time to check the lobby is empty before bringing her in. I'm relieved that to some of the backlog from the pandemic pets has cleared through so it's no longer a 2 month wait to schedule an appointment! read more

After initially reaching out, we quickly booked an appointment, scheduled for a few days later. The communication and visit was wonderful and we received the results of my cat's bloodwork less than 24 hours later. Couldn't have asked for a better experience.. They've been able to get my dogs in for urgent appointments, and we moved our elderly husky there because they were able to get her in same day for an urgent foot issue that ultimately required surgical intervention that they performed. She did fantastic, we were there several times over two weeks for follow ups. Had another urgent issue arise and they were still able to fit in same day. read more

Don't be fooled by the warm suburban mask, these people don't give a sh-t about your pet. This is THE worst vet I've ever been to, the customer service is an absolute joke. I took my dog here for an exam, the vet recommended he have surgery immediately, made it sound urgent. They said they would send me an email with the type of procedure and what needed to be done by END OF DAY. 3 weeks go by, I speak with them to remind them to send it SIX times, each time I got some excuse. If I count how many times I actually called, multiply that by 5 because they never pick up their phone. If you don't believe me, go ahead, try calling. Good luck. I remained patient, reminding them over multiple weeks time to send it. They never did. The last straw was when I called the 6th time, instead of trying to help me, the receptionist noted it's actually been 2 weeks instead of 3. Whoever you are, I'm glad you could pick that moment to be passive aggressive. Meanwhile my dog can't walk, is in pain, and is not eating. These people have 0 EQ. I don't know how this type of place can even exist. read more

Everyone at Lexington Veterinary Associates is wonderful, caring and empathetic, from the vet assistants and techs, front desk, to all of the Dr's, we feel so blessed to have them in our lives. Although we mainly bring our Havanese dog, Leo, for all matters, we recently had to euthanize our 14 year old leopard gecko due to liver issues. Dr Smith and the entire team could not have been more empathetic, kind, and thoughtful in helping us through the process. It's really rare these days to feel like you and your pet aren't just another "number", and that even the most unconventional pets are treated with compassion and dignity. I am very disappointed with them right now. I called on June 21st to make an appointment for my new rescue dog. The girl that answered the phone took down all my information about my new dog and scheduled me for July 2 at 10:20. When I got there today they told me I didn't have an appointment. I took the morning off of work to have my dog seen. The woman at the desk told me she could try to squeeze me in in the afternoon. I have been a customer for over 8 years. I have been taking my 11 year old lab here for 11 years and I can say nothing but excellent things about my experiences. They have always provided excellent care for my dog, and have also been amazingly kind and supportive to me, especially in the early years when I was a new dog owner and fretted about everything. Nowadays they are guiding me through being a senior dog owner and I can honestly say I really do appreciate their compassion. We have seen all the vets here but most routinely see Dr. Smith. Steve at the front desk has become a true friend to my dog who loves to see him! The hours are truly business hours except for a short window of time on Saturdays from 9-12 but I feel like I have always been able to get the attention I need! Our cat was diagnosed with kidney disease a year ago. They told us it was terminal, give him Prescription diet kidney formula, he might last months to a year. At the time he was a 22 lb big, strong cat. I found out much too late that the condition is treatable with hydration and medication. My pal died, probably could have gone another year with proper treatment. I'll never know for sure, but I do know for sure the diagnosis and treatment could not have been handled more wrongly. We've also had a lot of problems with rude and snippy desk staff, however if the vets were competent, we could probably tolerate them. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. The last three visits I waited 35-45 minutes after the time of the scheduled appointment. The people behind the counter don't update you, which I find to be a tad less than helpful. Also, I was having a young male neutered and had to schedule two visits. One pre-op physical then the actual date of surgery. The first visit is not necessary and is scheduled just to jack up the cost. The whole procedure is usually done in a day, and when I walked out after waiting 45 minutes beyond the appointment time I got a call and was told it could be done in one visit. I've been going to this clinic for 35 years. It's not the same service it used to be, so I now bring my animals to a more professional clinic. I will say that the vets are good, but you just have to have a lot of time on your hands or be willing to wait. read more

Took my dog in for a minor ear infection, she left that day with a cone on her head and a bleeding broken nail due to Dr. Siddans and his assistance's incompetence when swabbing my dogs ear. Told by the doctor to bring her back in a few days to check on her nail and they charge me $35 for this visit, plus insist I make another appointment to check the bandage again(another $35) or buy antibiotics for the injury THEY CAUSED ON THEIR OWN EXAM TABLE. Go elsewhere. Dr. Read owns the practice, arrogant and wants your money. I took my dogs there for many years with hopes that it would get better, convenient and we do love Dr. Smith, who also owns the practice. A bit TMI and you can't get a word in, but she knows her stuff. When you see Science Diet being recommended, that's the first red flag. Well known to be packed with corn which dogs can't properly digest well, has zero nutritional value. Then add the fact that your dog isn't as important as them receiving the entire bill right away, any testing or your dog's needs will not be taken care of until you cough it up. I've always paid my vet bill in monthly increments if over a few hundred, it's patient friendly and shows us that our vet cares more about our pets than a few bucks. It also ensures a long relationship, obviously we're going to pay the bill, unless perhaps our pet is like 18yrs old and very sick? They refused to do critical diagnostic work because of a balance of less than $100. Even in a serious medical situation, after a history of paying right away has been established, I even made a special trip to pay the whole balance three days later. (The guy said no problem, he's the only one with any courtesy regarding long term patients like myself) I'm not going anywhere, do you really think I'm not going to pay my bill?? With tears in my eyes after a serious incident, rushed over there with my dog, didn't even bring my pocket book...They refused to do the test needed unless I rush home with less than a half hour during rush hour or they wouldn't do the needed test. Seriously? I asked if anyone would be there just a few minutes after closing if traffic was bad, tough luck was the response. Wow. Don't EVER disagree with Dr. Reed, his staff will suddenly tell you that he is no longer seeing pets, only doing surgery. They might want to consider that we can hear them on the phone, one of Dr.Read's patients calling about a skin condition and the results of the appointment the day prior. Really? Lying to us about not seeing patients anymore? It's like the Seinfeld episode where Elaine has a rash and she can't be seen after simply expressing herself to one Dr lol...Don't flatter yourself Dr.Read, if Science Diet is on your shelves, speaks volumes about your lack of knowledge in pet nutrition. The staff needs serious training in people skills, the only guy there is the best, very nice and has tolerated the place for like 20 yrs. Wendy needs to find another profession, just rude. I was hopeful, some of the treatment has been good, but it often feels like they're just going through the motions. Do some reading...NO ONE is feeding pets with Hills/Science Diet anymore. Health conscience pet stores won't even sell it. Plenty of great vets around, go somewhere that your pets are given more consideration than a dollar and Dr. Read's ego. read more

He is unusually competent, knowledgeable, and compassionate. he is a master diagnostician and surgeon. He performed a delicate cancer surgery on my cat about a year ago. I got an excellent result. And what's more, Dr. Read called me a few days later before he went away for a holiday weekend just to find out how my cat (who he called a sweetheart) was doing. Sadly, Dr. Read will be retiring soon. And I go nowhere near Dr. Smith. She is difficult to communicate with, doesn't listen well. Worse still, SHE FAILED TO PROPERLY DIAGNOSE CANCER IN MY CAT AND MY FRIEND'S DOG. She's adequate for routine matters but AVOID HER FOR ANYTHING COMPLEX. read more

Both my parents and I have taken every single pet we've ever had here. The veterinarians are phenomenal. Front desk staff are pretty friendly. Never had a problem getting an appointment even if I had an emergency and it was last minute. Only complaint I have is sometimes I've waited well past my pets schedules appointment time for them to take us back. Still id rather wait here then go anywhere else! I am very disappointed with the level of care that our pet received from Lexington Vet Associates. We recently adopted an 8 week old Lab mix puppy from a rescue/shelter and took him to LVA after a family members recommendation. Our first trip with our pup was for him to receive vaccinations/boosters and it went pretty well. We were informed we had a "healthy" dog; that his vitals were good and his heart and lungs sounded good as well. Within six hours of our visit our dog became violently ill and vomited 5 or 6 times. We took him to an emergency clinic in Waltham where they treated him for a suspected reaction to one of his shots. When he didn't improve by the next morning we took him back to LVA where they proceeded to take abdominal xrays and assured us it was nothing more than gas and stool backed up in his colon and intestines. We were told to take him home and just keep an eye on him and to call in the morning if there were any problems. He remained lethargic and dumpy throughout the evening so we took him back for his 3rd visit in 3 days the moment they opened on Saturday. They repeated his xrays, gave him a small amount of fluids, and sent us home again...telling us to call on Monday and tell them how he was doing. By Saturday evening he wasn't taking food or liquids and was vomiting and having numerous episodes of diarrhea. We put him in the car and took him back to Waltham. The vet there immediately suspected Parvovirus and said they would test him and we would go from there. The test was positive. I am very disappointed that the Dr at LVA never mentioned or even suspected Parvovirus in our new puppy. The virus is quite common among young dogs, in particular, dogs from rescues and shelters. Our pup presented with all the symptoms...lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and they never even considered testing him. We wasted 2 whole days where our dog could have started treatment and greatly improved his chances of survival. I would NOT recommend taking your pet here. While the vet (who shall remain nameless) admitted fault and said she feels totally responsible, what good does that do us? read more

My family has been bringing our family dogs to Lexington Vet for the past 25+ years. Dr. Reed was all of my dog's primary vet and he is fantastic. I always thought he was very nice when I was a kid. Now that I am older and have my own dog, I continue to come here. Dr. Reed is still wonderful. Very knowledgable and practical. He doesn't throw all these different treatments at you like some vets, which I love. Dr. Hartounian is my dog's primary vet and he LOVES her. I think she is a great vet as well, she is very open to my holistic approaches to my dog's lifestyle which makes giving him the best care possible a lot easier. However, with that being said, I have had some frustrations with his care in the 2 years I've had him. For about 7-8 months, maybe more, my dog had some skin issues and I couldn't figure it out. I was told he had food allergies and to put him on a limited ingredient diet staying away from all "normal proteins" such as chicken, beef, lamb, etc. So I tried venison, kangaroo, rabbit with little progress in clearing his skin up. I know finding the right food is hard but what irritated me was the fact that every time his skin broke out, he was prescribed anti-histamines. Which yes, this helps clear it up but it doesn't fix the problem. Now, I'm a canine professional, I'm a groomer, certified in canine nutrition, etc and I know there is a difference between food ALLERGIES and food INTOLERANCES but that was never discussed with me, it was always just giving him new anti-histamines. Anyways, I figured out the food issue on my own and now he is fine, I just wish it didn't take me almost a year to figure it out by them helping me out a bit. Other than that all the vets at this practice are great! The main reason I am giving them 3 stars is because I can't STAND their front desk staff. If their reception staff as better, I'd give 4 stars but I simply can't, I almost gave 2 stars but I am overall very happy with the initial care my dog receives. Anyways, the staff at the front, I always get this strange vibe when I call, almost like they are annoyed that I call. I will admit, I am that crazy overprotective dog lady and I know some people get thrown off by this because of my age and the amount of knowledge I have about dogs but either way, I shouldn't be getting a feeling of tension when trying to make an appointment or ask a question. That is not as big of a deal as one day when I overheard a conversation between one of the staff members, Wendy, and what seemed to be a somewhat concerned owner. As I stated above, I have very in depth knowledge when it comes to canine nutrition and after hearing this conversation, I seriously considered collecting my dog's medical file and going elsewhere, for good. Apparently, this customer was feeding their dog Purina Beneful and was concerned on whether it's a "good food" or not. Wendy assured him "it is a great food because it has preservatives so it doesn't get moldy like that other crap". That "other crap" meaning more natural and holistic kibble. This ENRAGED me. It has preservatives so it doesn't get moldy?!?! Sure, let's just feed our kids McDonald's every day for the rest of their lives because y'know, it has preservatives so it doesn't get moldy, unlike salad, salad is crap! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?! Beneful is linked to KILLING dogs. Any food by Purina, Pedigree, Eukanuba, Hills is CRAP! Vets recommend these foods because these big name companies fund a lot of their education, vets never learn proper nutrition in school and are taught that these brands are good quality foods. How do I know this? Two of my very close friends are vets and have admitted this to me when I have brought up why they recommend such low quality, hardly nutritional food. Don't believe me? My cat had been suffering and unfortunately had to be put to sleep today. I brought him in to Dr. Read for the Euthanasia because of all the positive reviews I read on here. I was very sad (obviously) and asked a couple of questions about my cats condition. Dr. Read was very cold and got annoyed at my questions! He RUSHED me through the process of saying goodbye to my kitty that I've had for 13 years, and got super annoyed when I asked if I can at least have a couple minutes with my vat between the anesthesia and the injection to put him down. I've honestly never ever come across a vet with such a lack of compassion, and an attitude like he had. I was shocked to be honest that a vet can be so disrespectful at such a sensitive time when I'm standing there in tears. The only reason that I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because I like that they use the Gas (Nitris I believe) Sedative instead of an Anesthetic via needle, because my kitty hated needles. We would highly recommend Lexington Veterinary Associates. We switched vets because our previous vet could not figure out why our dog was having a lameness problem with his front legs. After ruling out anything more serious, Dr. Read was able to point us in the right direction and help us think outside the box as to how our dog was possibly causing his lameness. Bingo, once we figured out what the dog was doing, we were able to fix the problem and our dog is now very healthy and happy! We are SOOoooo happy we switched and plan on staying with them! I have been taking my dogs to Dr. Read for more than 20 years and have been extremely pleased with the care they have received. Dr. Read has extensive experience and medical knowledge and stays current with latest procedures and technology. He is compassionate, kind, an excellent diagnostician and many times, he has offered options in an attempt to conserve my funds. Over the years, he has cured many illnesses and has successfully performed multiple surgeries on my various dogs for fatty tumors, kidney stones, cysts, spaying, neutering, dental, etc. He also has treated a couple of chronic illnesses. I consider myself very fortunate to have my dogs in Dr. Read's care. As with my own medical care, I want the very best for my dogs as well, and Dr. Read provides that. read more

I am very upset with Lexington Vet Associates at this point. My 17 year old cat has urinary issues and has had this condition since he was 2. I have been buying the special urinary dry food for him through them for 15 years. Yesterday I tried to order Urinary Treats for him on a website, and Lexington Vet Assoc. would not approve the prescription without seeing him. I just brought him there last year for a checkup. It is very stressful for a 17 year old cat to be put in the box, in the car, and go to the vet. Apparently, they do not understand this. This was for TREATS! I can't even believe this. I have been bringing all of my cats there for over 25 years, but now I am switching to Toureen/Mass Animal Medical Center in Watertown. He was just treated there for his urinary condition and THEY were wonderful. The Doctor called me twice to follow up. Also wanted to note, as others have stated here, the reception people at Lex Vet are just plain rude and unfriendly. They need to hire new people. read more
