I have been bringing my animals to Adams Animal Clinic for well over twenty years and I have always found the staff there to be nothing less than professional, caring and dedicated people. Dr Nuggent has made house calls to my home and business in Dorchester as well as to the homes of friends of mine in Milton. These visits were not always for the happiest of occassions but allowed my pets final moments to be in an environment that was familiar and comfortable for them. I have at times used and been happy with The Angel in J.P.. On a few occassions Dr Nuggent referred me there. I find my visits there to be far less personal than the visits I enjoy at Adams. I have always adopted rescue animals and strays and love my animals as much as the next guy. I would never put my animal at risk for a few dollars. Dr Nuggent is a well qualified animal doctor with a very caring and professional staff. People may have different opinions about his "bedside" manners but I don't question his integrity, ability or professionalism. I highly recommend a visit to Adams Animal Clinic. read more

Dr. Nugent is a kind and caring vet in every way. His focus is your animal, not small talk with the fur parents... He gets to the base of your animal's issue. I could talk about my baby all day long but that is not what he is there for. He's an animal doctor, he doesn't need my inane human take on my animal's care. His staff has always been kind and professional. I've been taking my animals, even a Zebra finch, to Adams since the days of Ptolemy Adams and Dr. Nugent has taken over the reins with plenty of skill and knowledge. I've taken my dog to Adams Animal clinic for a few years now and I've noticed that the staff often look untidy,dirty , and extremely nonporfessional. I've also noticed that Dr. Nugent rarely gets to the clinic on time. I If you make a 10 am appointment, he usually walks in at about 10:20 am as if nothing matters and he's starting to act like he works in a factory. He's become increasingly nonprofessional over the past 2-3 years ( is there some reason why his shirts are not ironed?). I'm wondering if his health is failing in some way. I don't like the setup with the kennel and I don't want any high school kids near my dog. I've never visited the clinic when kids weren't working there. On one visit, I had 14-15 year old kid proceed to evaluate the health of my dog. What a joke, as I'm a health care professional. Most of the people working at the clinic look and act as if they're on some sort of training program and if that's the case, I don't want them near my dog. i also agree with a previous poster about the wild animals running all over the place. It's like a zoo out there. Oh, by the way, why are all the dogs always barking out there? Is there a reason? I certainly would not want my dog to undergo any type of surgery at the clinic ( have you seen the area where the IV meds are prepared?) .Nor would I want my dog to develop an infection due to poor sanitation . For this reason I no longer take my dog to the Adams clinic. Likewise I don't want some 15 year old kid giving me any medical advice about my dog. YIKES! Isn't it illegal to practice medicine without a license? Dr. Nugent only works at the clinic on Weds and Thurs and I wonder if he still owns this clinic, as he now has two other vets working in there on the other 3 days of the week. Actually, when you think of the general attitude in the clinic, one wonders if a new owner ( absent ) has taken over. The staff never talks about it, so it's anyone's guess, what's going on there. But, I wouldn't be surprised to know that Nugent isn't the owner any longer. Most if not all of his steady customers appear to be on limited, fixed income and Nugent's services tend to be cheap, it's understandable that they would continue to use him as their vet and to also defend his practice. If you suspect that your animal has a medical problem, please go elsewhere for treatment and care. I think it's a dirty shame that the tumor in the little dog's mouth, mentioned above by Bamboo K, was missed and you're wise to follow up on this with the Vet Board. 've changed vets and now go to a professional DVM, who's up to date, gives a thorough physical exam of the dog, is kind and compassionate. My dog has now been diagnosed as hypothyroid, and is being giving an Rx for treatment. Why didn't Nugent make this discovery? What's especially interesting is the fact that now that I go to a different Vet, my dog's insurance plan now pays for most of the Vet bill. Often, in the past, the insurance company has rejected payment of most if not all of the bill from Adams Animal Clinic. There are several excellent Vets in the, Cambridge, Belmont, and Boston areas and I encourage you to visit one of them. Quality health care is critical to animal well being. We've been taking our pets to Adams Animal Clinic for as long as I can remember. We are in our third generation of Adams clinic customers (as in pet owners), and have had numerous dogs and cats treated here. My father brought his dog to Adams when Doc. Adams was still around, and Dr. Nugent has been the vet to every pet I, my siblings, or my children have ever owned. It's a small clinic, not a hospital, but they are not shy to recommend we take our pets to the hospital if there is any issue they are ill-equipped for. If you're looking for a reasonably priced no-nonsense veterinarian, I recommend Adams. read more

AAC is NOT the place to bring your cats. We have an older cat (~15 y/o) who we thought was getting sick because she couldn't make it to her litter box on time on numerous occassions. We decided to call Adams hoping they will have answers, so my mom and I brought her to Adams to get her checked out. Dr. Allen was the one to take in our pet, and my mom had WARNED her in advance NOT to put the standard collar on her because the cat WILL bite. Low and behold, the cat bit her and she got pissed off but finished the examination anyways. We found out that our cat has crystals inside her and to take a special diet food to prepare for surgery this upcoming week. However, that appointment will not be happening as Dr. Allen called the Woburn Board of Health to have somebody inspect the condo I live in as well as inspecting our cat. Turns out that we MUST get rid of her and the Board expects her to be gone next time they visit, whenever that may be. Seriously Dr. Allen? I agree with the frightening postings people have made about Dr. Nugent and his cheap disgusting clinic and poor care. He took my cats teeth out too, also needlessly, they had drugged my cat so much he was out for way longer than he should have been, I felt so sorry for him but luckily his faculties returned, I asked for his teeth back and they gave me these perfect pristine teeth, I asked about it, because he wasn't supposed to remove them if he found that they were fine, she grabbed the teeth from me went in the back and it looks to me like she had crushed them in something and then returned them to me, nothing like destroying the evidence!!! The worst thing that this unbelievably IGNORANT doctor did was wind up costing me nearly $2000 at the local animal hospital where my cat would not have needed to go to if he had properly assisted me when I went to him with the problem. My report was like this " My cat is peeing a LOT, and drinking A LOT, and he is wasting away, getting skinnier, his breath smells like a sweet smell but like another thing, actually, exactly like nail polish remover" come to find out this is readily available info on the internet, my cat had diabetes but was not diagnosed at the time and was nearly dead two weeks later, just the smell alone, which I perfectly described to him, and apparently only some people can smell this and he isn't one of them, but my description was ON THE MONEY, he SHOULD Have known, when I brought my cat back two weeks later a different doctor at his clinic pulled his urine out right through his body with a needle and was able to see his ketones were through the roof. she told me my cat was going to die if he wasn't hospitalized immediately!!! meanwhile even at that point in time his blood sugars were not that high at all. My cat is possibly a cat that could have been treated without insulin, had it been discovered when it first started and was brought to him the first time, but instead he nearly died and it took a lot to get him out of that hospital where he never would have had to go if he was assessed and treated in the first place, this guy is a total hack, be careful! now i have to live also with the guilt that i let him put my cat under and take out two of his teeth for what could have been treated with a good tooth scraping. he is lazy and gross, maybe he does it becuase he makes more with these stupid operations, how many animals are missing teeth because of this moron??? pay a little bit more, go to someone who has standards and a modicum of knowlege, Stoneham Animal hospitals prices seem the best 781 438 7200. if you love your pet you probably need to stay clear of this guy, i would have filed a complaint and now that I am reading this and realizing i am not the only one i probably will, i really wanted to file a report but i felt so hopeless about it all, as soon as I started asking him questions about these things and saying only a tiny bit of how it made me feel he hung up the phone and sent me my records, he said to get care somewhere else. He is horrible and he hurt my cat and I shouldn't have let him near him. I have had three dogs go to adams animal clinic. Dr. Nugent is very un-emotional - and coming from a very blunt person, who is attached to her pets, this can be disturbing in times of of concern, however, I have never encountered ANY problems that have been referenced on this site. 90% of his staff has been there the entire time I have been a client (over 16 years), so i'm not sure who is saying they have random teenagers in there all the time it's simply untrue. The staff photo from christmas 15 years ago is on the wall in the office and you can see that most of the same people work there. He does have a few younger staff members, not teenagers, that have been there for probably two years or so that are there for the kennels. Apparently those who mention the constant barking have never been to a kennel!!! That's just a ridiculous statement. He is also getting up there in age, and owns the property and home that is adjacent to the clinic, so he has probably chosen to reduce his schedule hence the addition of the two other vets. The "wild" animals someone referenced are two wild turkeys that wandered into his yard one day and never left. He built them a coop and they are fenced in at all times and now are his pets, so that again, is an exaggeration of the truth. I have two yorkies, one which ended up getting mammary tumors. I was furious with them because she had been there to have three removed and within two weeks I noticed two more that I felt should have been found and removed at that time. I actually switched vets because I was so upset. HOWEVER, the very well known and recommended vet I went to see advised me that tumors can often show up very quickly and it's not an uncommon occurrence, that I should not just assume he "missed" them. A very reputable breeder of 30+ years, owner of over 20 active show dogs and owner of 6 retired show dogs currently at home, also advised me they can practically pop up overnight, it is not the vet's fault. The two yorkies I had that have since passed on, both surpassed normal life expectency (15 and 16.5 years) and went to nugent their entire lives so he must be doing something right. There are always going to be people that have bad experiences at a place and if I did, I certainly would be commenting on it here as well. In the same aspect, I feel it necessary to state that in the 16 plus years I have been bringing three different dogs there, the only problem I have is that Dr. Nugent is "old school" and all business - just as quite a few people doctors are. He could lighten up a little, crack a smile once in a while and be a little more personable. But if I have to swap that for quality vet care, he can stay indifferent as far as i'm concerned. read more

I'm actually thoroughly upset with these negative reviews and mostly for the reasons. I have taken all of my animals to this clinic my entire life and I would not go anywhere else, I worked in the veterinary field and STILL took my pets there because I trust Dr. Nugent more than anyone. The staff is great and although Dr. Nugent's bed side manner may come off as cold sometimes, he is the best of the best. I really enjoy the old school feeling of pulling up and seeing the mini horse and donkeys outside and as far as him not caring about the animals he's seeing, maybe some of you should try working in that field. I love Dr. Nugent and will only take my animal family members to see him. I have been going there was over 20 years. He is serious about his work and clearly cares about the animals. As you get to know him, you will see he has a dry sense of humor. I find his staff to be friendly and professional and I know that they care about the animals. I am always able to get an appointment - even on Saturdays and are relatively. It is not the most modern clinic - they use index cards as records - but I am confident in the care that my animals receive. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! I've been taking my dog here for years (she has severe anxiety and it was not worth it to introduce her to a new vet at her age), but I loathed every trip. Not one of them are kind or compassionate to the animals. I made them aware that my dog was blind and they made no effort to give her warnings or prepare her before they picked her up or grabbed her leg to take blood, so she was very afraid of them. He makes her bleed every single time he clips her nails. I heard great things about Dr. Adam, but it was Dr. Nugent's practice by the time I started bringing her. He gives a few rough, transparent taps on the head to my dog but has no kind words or comforting nature. They have no computer or itemized bills, everything is hand written and goes off the verbal list that the vet just rattles off to the secretary after each appointment. It is unclean and unprofessional. I am not sure how true this is but I have heard that the Dr. Nugent and the clinic have been investigated for concerns regarding the care of the animals. I do not know this for sure but I would not be surprised. read more

Investigated by MA Vet Board for negligence involving our pet. Adams was completely irresponsible with the care of our dog resulting in a missed/misdiagnosis of our beloved canine best friend. We took our dog to Adams Animal Clinic because she was experiencing pain in her jaw. First diagnosis was NOISE FROM CONSTRUCTION? No construction in the area. We brought her back, then it changed to pulling teeth. Dr. Nugent didn't have time in his schedule for many weeks, but the STAFF said that was FINE. I called & called the clinic telling them the condition was acute & was told do not worry. When he finally pulled her teeth Nugent called & told us our dog HAD A TUMOR that was "under her jaw & *not visible & her prognosis "NOT GOOD". He then hung up. We had been taking our dog there for four months because the we were concerned because she was in pain (she would lay her jaw in our lap). We took her to another vet to sort out Dr. Nugent's MESS, & was told for those four months she has been in *excruciating pain* after Dr. Nugent pulled teeth & removing a "chunk of a tumor" & sent her home with no pain killers. Disgraceful. Another vet explained when a piece of tumor is removed, it spreads like wild fire, a fact Dr. Nugent did not share! He never should have biopsied our pet without permission. The othex vet said she could go to Smiles Hospital & get her jaw removed there was great success with that w/chemo - we were told dogs adjust fine.....but we thought about her quality of life - something Dr. Nugent neglected. (The review that states fiber sarcoma is not treatable is INCORRECT) The POINT to any animal lover is obvious - she was in excruciating pain for more than four months & misdiagnosed - like NOISE? TEETH? That's just WRONG. And I speak UP for ANIMALS. Animals suffer in silence. I never chased reputable vets who care & call to check in. My mother could tell after she met him, that he was an arrogant man and had no compassion for animals, particularly our 10 year old Lhasa. She told him our dog used to be a champion & he grumbled, not w/these misaligned teeth! We gave a dog a home, and he was criticizing her. Our dog was a therapy dog, everyone's friend, made people's days. Their handling of a pet is an owner's nightmare, she SCREAMED in pain as two big kids layed on her. I speak up - because animals need a voice. Woburn Animal Hospital could have done a biopsy non-invasively for earIy diagnosis I later learned. Bamboo would not have lived for more than four months in *extreme pain*.. I do not expect MIRACLES from vets but I expect compassion& from them to possess the COMPETENCY to perform their job. Non invasive procedures cost money, equipment cost money. I suspect Adams defenders know it is far from state of the art & don't want to take their pets to state of the art hospital, but it would kill them to admit it! Or they are Adams employees covering their tracks (TRYING). The other vet put our dog Fentanyl (stronger than Morphine) patch plus a double dose of Metacam immediately. Within two weeks after Dr. Nugent's treatment, our dog was put down humanely by another vet as a direct result of a belated misdiagnosis. Because of the biopsy Dr. Nugent performed, it was too late to take her for treatment at Smiles Hopital. t I had not had a pet for a while and did not know better... now I do & you KNOW too. Take your pet to an AHAA accredited hospital where there are sincere capable caregivers. Our new vet is state of the art, & would have never messed up our dog's treatment. I learned about the need for top medical equipment and top vets are . It's terrible animals are being dragged to this old shack - comfortable for the old skool feel there, NO modern equipment that cost big money! Are you an owner that believes your pet deserves the same level of care as you? When my elderly neighbor took her dog to be put down as Dr. Nugent suggested, another vet kept the dog alive because it was in no pain . Everything I have written is the TRUTH. Adams Animal Clinic really botched up our dog's treatment & just lied & covered it up. They are no animal lovers. Another vet there was involved. Woburn Animal Hospital would not have rested until the found what was wrong with an animal never mind allow four months pass by while the animal is in PAIN..* Responsible ownership* means providing your pet with the best AHAA approved care. If you don't want to, don't get a pet. Example, the careless reviewer below who doesn't even have their facts straight & yet is condescending? That's a good owner? That's an Adams employee. I have been taking my animals to Adams since the 80's, both dogs and cats. When doc Adams was there, the service was wonderful. Since Dr. Nugent and his crew took over, service is terrible and to tell you the truth, a bit shady. This is the 21st century and this clinic doesn't have basic diagnostic equipment or even basic office equipment. Records are kept on filing cards (no computer) and they can't even be bothered to give you a receipt or invoice to show what treatment was given and the cost. Nugent just states the charges and the girl at the front collects the money, when asked for a receipt stated "we don't give (receipts)". Assistants appear barely old enough to be out of high school and are surly and non-professional. Nugent is arrogant and churlish showing no compassion or care for the animals or their owners. His handling of animals is rough and perfunctory. If your animal screams or yelps he shows no concern whatsoever for their pain or discomfort and if you do, he treats you as if you are an idiot on par with some crazy cat lady (you know the stereotype). His "diagnosis's" (all done without benefit of xrays, ultrasounds or any other diagnostics) are designed to keep you going back so he can take another guess at what is actually wrong with your pet and charge another few hundred dollars to man handle them and sell medicines that are marked up 300-400% and don't work. Meanwhile, your pet's health declines and in some cases, they die waiting for treatment that never comes. I suppose every once in a while he gets one right, even a broken clock is right twice a day but is that REALLY the quality of care you want for your pet? Save time, money and possibly your pet's life and go to Woburn Animal Hospital/LedgeBrook Kennel located right down the street from Adams. They are a bit more expensive but you and your pet get excellent treatment from professionals who CARE and have the latest and greatest diagnostic equipment. Can't say enough about the great care my dog receives at Adams. They don't charge an arm and leg. Adams may not have all the bells & whistles that some other high priced vets have but I don't want to pay for bells & whistles. I just want my dog to get the care he needs. Adams gets an A+. read more

I am very surprised on the rating for this clinic! I love the service and caring staff. Dr Nugent calls to check on my dogs after surgery, he doesn't have an assistant call. The prices are very reasonable. They don't try to push you into unnecessary services. I love them and definitely think they deserve 5 stars. read more

I have an 8 month old golden who recently got very sick. The staff stayed past close to make sure he was okay. The following day Dr Nugent asked to see him and keep him for the day for observation. He changed his meds and didn't charge a penny for his day stay and care. The love of animals by the staff and knowledge of Dr Nugent is truly amazing! I can't say enough about Adams Animal Clinic. I've been taking my cats there for years and friends and family take everything from hamsters to dogs there. Dr. Nugent is terrific with animals. The staff is kind and understanding of owners' quirks. Yes, they have their own way of doing things but having been to a full-scale vet place where a cat was badly diagnosed, it really comes down to the skill and experience of the vet. I feel for Bamboo K. Her experience with her dog's cancer is truly heartbreaking. I know that we expect and wish for miracles from our health care practitioners--and it can be very upsetting when we don't get them. Mouth tumors are particularly cruel and fast growing. And in small animals there is almost nothing to be done for them (other than palliative care) Early or late diagnosis, the prognosis is no different. It is so sad for those of us who have had pets go through this, but it's true. It seems fairly irresponsible that the other clinic didn't help Bamboo K understand this because now she is living with unrealistic "if onlys" when she could be coming to terms with her loss. Bamboo K, has my deep sympathy, but I hope she will come to accept that there is likely no malpractice here. I hope she can work through her very natural grief and anger and will soon be ready to stop maligning what I personally have experienced as a caring, compassionate, wonderful clinic where my cats have received nothing but outstanding care for the past 15 years. read more

We have been taking our dogs to Adam's Animal Clinic since we got them, and it has been nothing but amazin. Our first dog Gabby got very sick about 6 months after we rescued her. Dr. Nugent was her vet and he did many tests and told us that he believed she had Cutaneous Vasculitus.. well of course we did not want to believe him so we went to a specialist in dog dermatology for a second opinion. She tested Gabby for scabies, mange, lime disease, while in the mean time her symptoms were getting worse while we were spending no lie thousands of dollars to try to get to the bottom of this. In the mean time we decided to go back to Dr. Nugent as this lady obviously had no idea what she was doing. Well Dr. Nugent started to treat Gabby for cutaneous vasculitus and unbelievable her symptoms got better. However, Dr. Nugent was very honest with her diagnosis explaining that cutaneous vasculitus is not curable and that we could only treat the symptoms, there was no willing this away. Well with treatment Gabby was able to live comfortable before having to be put down after a 2 year battle. Unfortunately we feel that if we had just listened to Dr. Nugent in the first place that Gabby may have had extra time to live. As the dermatologist that we saw at the Referral hospital actually had been over dosing Gabby on unnecessary medication which led to her almost going into liver failure. Long story short, we will not be going anywhere else. Dr. Nugent knows his stuff. Not to mention his wonderful staff that are always helpful and friendly, answering all of our many questions!
