My lower teeth in particular had long ago gone back to looking crowded again & I just accepted it. Fast forward to about a year ago. I had over time, developed a significant gap between my top & bottom teeth on the left side of my mouth forcing me to exclusively chew on just a couple of teeth on the right. I thought that I might be developing sleep apnea, although I wasn't snoring. I realized that what was happening was that my two top front teeth were pushing forward & causing my mouth to open at night! I also was suffering with TMJ type pain, but wasn't sure if that was related. I first brought this to the attention of my regular dentist who suggested to me that he could file down the teeth on the right side so that my bite would be evened out ( really....that's crazy!). I found, through Yelp, Dr Bruno & her team. I'm wrapping up my care plan after using Invisalign for about a year. I'm back to chewing normally, my mouth isn't opening up at night, the pain is gone & my smile looks better than it has in decades; I'm thrilled! After wearing braces for all those years, I was unhappy with my bite and the appearance of my teeth. I had already spent so much time and money on orthodontic treatment, and I was hurt, disappointed, and sad about my experience. After everything I went through, I had lost confidence in orthodontic treatment. I made my first appointment with Dr. Gerlein for July 29. From the moment I walked into the office, I noticed something completely different. Starting from the front desk, everyone greeted me with a smile. Every person I met was kind, welcoming, and professional. I have been to different offices before, but I had never experienced this type of treatment. I still wonder where Dr. Gerlein found so many kind and professional people to work in one place. Their smiles and greetings feel genuine and come from the heart. When I met Dr. Gerlein, I explained my experience with my previous orthodontist and everything I had gone through during those 5 years and 4 months. He listened carefully and examined my teeth and bite. I felt like he understood how disappointed and sad I was about my previous treatment and genuinely wanted to help me. He explained what was wrong with my bite, what needed to be corrected, the treatment plan, and the goal for my teeth. I was also worried about the cost because I had already paid so much money for my previous orthodontic treatment. Starting another treatment meant another expense for me. Dr. Gerlein considered everything I had already gone through and gave me a price much lower than I expected. I was shocked and grateful for his kindness and consideration. What touched me even more was that Dr. Gerlein personally removed the old braces I had worn for 5 years and 4 months. He also personally cleaned my teeth after removing the braces, with no additional charge. After everything I had experienced, this meant so much to me. Dr. Gerlein and his team worked hard to start my new treatment on the same day. His staff arranged for my clear aligners while I was still there. They asked me to return about two hours later, and when I came back, my aligners were ready. I started my new treatment that same day. I cannot fully explain how happy I felt when those old braces finally came off after 5 years and 4 months. Receiving my clear aligners on the same day made me feel happier than my birthday. After wearing braces for such a long time, seeing my teeth without them and knowing I was starting a new treatment plan was an emotional moment for me. I will never forget that day. I came to this office feeling hurt and sad because of my previous orthodontic experience. The kindness, care, and professionalism Dr. Gerlein and his staff showed me helped me forget about the negative experience I had before. They gave me confidence in orthodontic treatment again. The way they treated me from my first visit made a big difference in how I felt. My second visit was yesterday, and once again, I received the same kindness, care, and professionalism. As soon as I entered the office, everyone welcomed me warmly. Dr. Gerlein and his team explained the procedure before working on my teeth. Dr. Gerlein explained the treatment he was doing that day, why he was doing it, and the next steps in my treatment plan. I had never experienced this level of communication and explanation from my previous orthodontist. Dr. Gerlein's education and experience, including his training at Harvard, gave me confidence, but the way he treats his patients means even more to me. He takes his time to explain my treatment and makes sure I understand the plan. His team works professionally, and I see how carefully everyone takes care of my teeth. I am confident Dr. Gerlein will give me the results he planned for my teeth because I have already seen the professionalism, knowledge, and care he and his team put into my treatment. I already see a difference in my teeth, and I feel confident continuing my treatment with him. I highly recommend Dr. Eduardo Gerlein and his orthodontic team. When my hygienist left, everything went downhill. It's next to impossible to get an appointment here, so you have to book at least 4-5 months in advance (which is great if you can do it, but when things come up and you have to reschedule, it's a real bear). Friendship Heights also used to be close to where I worked, but now that I'm downtown it's just such a booger to get out there for a daytime appointment. I got my first cavity and had to point it out to them (just something off, no pain or anything) they didn't notice it in the cleaning or x-ray review. Once they got in there to fix it, however, Dr. Nichols noted that it was actually quite large and that we were lucky we caught it so soon. Scheduling that follow-on appointment to fix the cavity was also a real pain in the tuchus, although it did not take 4 months. I finally decided to make the switch and they don't do digital x-rays, so they can't send the x-rays I recently had taken to my new dentist and weren't helpful in any way on the phone, which is par for the course with the front desk person. He always seems annoyed that you're there and wasn't helpful in saying something like "we don't do digital x-rays, SORRY, but we can mail them." He just said "We don't do that" and that was that. Like, his whole job is customer service and trust me I know how much that can suck but like don't make it so that people have to force basic information out of you? Tell me what I need to know and we can both end this interaction more quickly, bro. I won't be going back, I don't recommend them, and I am sorry to everyone to whom I previously raved about this place and who went to Dr. Nichols at my urging and now can't get quality care OR their x-rays transferred.

After consulting with a number of specialists, the consensus was clear. Dr. Puterman is the best at what he does in the DMV--and my particular case (don't ask) required the best. I confess, I was skeptical. But a little more than half a decade (and several surgeries later (don't ask), I have a functional mouth again. Not only teeth that work but teeth that look great. Best of all, the pain that tormented me for decades is gone. GONE. Obliterated. Throughout this ordeal, Dr. Puterman stuck by me. And I by him and his extraordinary staff and colleagues. Dr. Puterman was always honest. Always fair. Always honorable. Always kind. And always decent. This is not what I would have expected given the intrinsic challenges of my case and the fickle nature of human biology that doesn't always cooperate with titanium and bone grafts. And yet--here I am--finally some five plus years later. Grateful beyond words for my experience with Dr. Puterman. Don't get me wrong. I won't miss being in his chair for scores of additional hours. I've been to dentists where a routine cleaning feels like being put in the torture chair, but that definitely wasn't the case here.
