This a local family oriented place for sure, it's the kind of place where when Mom says, I'm not cooking tonight, you head here for some comfort food. the menu is basic chicken fired steak, or friend fish or fried chicken offerings. I got the fired chicken which was a little overcooked but not terribly and the slaw on the side was almost a slurry but still tasty enough. If you're looking for really good broasted chicken, you've found the spot! In the tiny town of Liberty, Indiana..you'll find this hidden gem of chicken goodness. I used to come here years ago and have been wanting to come back for a while now. Since we were visiting family, we decided to take a drive out and get our chicken craving. This place is known for its broasted chicken (fried in a pressure cooker essentially) and it is worth the drive and the wait. It takes a bit for the chicken to be cooked, and there's a loyal following for it. We got here on a Saturday afternoon around lunch time and it was PACKED. I always go for the 4 piece broasted meal with mashed potatoes, white gravy and green beans and a side order of fried apples. This chicken is so crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The mashed potatoes and gravy are just like Mammaw makes for Sunday dinner. This place hits me with nostalgia every time I come. I absolutely love the food, and it's well worth the wait. My wife and I came from out of town and we're staying at a local Airbnb. We are looking for a breakfast place before our day of hiking in came across Liberty Bell restaurant we went inside. We immediately sat down at a table and got great service. It has a rustic type decor. My meal was black coffee. Country fried steak with scrambled eggs and a side of sausage patties my wife got a breakfast croissant with bacon, egg and cheese. The food came out promptly and was delicious. The portions were large and the food was very affordable compared to where we live in northwest Indiana. Everything was excellent. I would love to go there again. Perhaps we'll stop again on our way out tomorrow. The service was top notch. Young guy with alot of tattoos. He was polite, welcoming, and on the ball removing plates and filling coffee. The thing is, this place has a burger they call the Monster Burger. It's Huge, delicious, and very reasonably priced, This place is like 100 miles away now, but we still make a pilgrimage for some special event every year or so. It's a very rural sort of town, so the culture is quite different from the city, and might not be everyone's scene, otherwise the service is fine if brisk. It's not the best atmosphere in my opinion. Although it has a very rustic feel, which is quite unique, it is also a bit dingy and cramped. They have a large secondary area, but it seems to never be in use, they just pack everyone into the smaller front area they have by the registers. This is cetainly a place you go for the food more than anything else, but the food more than makes up for it. A side note, it's right next door to a sort of... rural mini-walmart, if that even makes sense. We always stop by there afterward and see what interesting things they have that we normally wouldn't see around here. read more

I walked in expecting a diner-quality breakfast. I got a meal that was definitely a notch above that. We were in Liberty after staying at Whitewater State Park for the weekend, and my boyfriend's dad suggested we get a Sunday breakfast at Liberty Bell. I was a little hesitant when we walked in. One of the menu boards at the counter proclaims, "Try our pizza. Voted #1." There was another "#1" on the menu, I think for the coffee. Maybe it's the former journalist in me; every time I see an unattributed "#1," I want to ask, "Says who?" But after looking at the menu some more, I was impressed with the options and ended up getting the Farmer's Special, which has hash browns mixed in with scrambled eggs, bacon and eggs, covered in sausage gravy and cheese, with toast on the side. It was rich to say the least. Pretty much every savory breakfast staple mixed together. But the sausage gravy was some of the best I've had. It was full of flavor without being too salty. Why is this combo not a thing on every brunch menu??? My boyfriend got the Hungry Man's Special -- three eggs, sausage, bacon, three mini pancakes, hash browns and toast. He was impressed as well. It was not life changing but was fresh and just shy of perfect, as he put it. The service was on point. Prices cheap. Coffee flowing. We have been going to liberty bell for 20 years and if I could give 0 stars I absolutely would. It's very sad how quickly this restaurant has gone down the tube. I have no idea what Andy is doing with his staff but half the time they're rude and make you wait FOREVER for a refill or your food or even to say hello when you sit down. But majority of the time it appears as though there is only one person working doing everything. The food is never fresh anymore, tastes like it's been sitting there all day or isn't cooked completely. When we arrived there was an empty table that needed cleaned, one of our party members proceeded to move the dirt dishes to the end of the table when she was told not to by the staff. We stood at the table for 30 minutes, requesting several times to have the table cleaned which we were told that they would get to it and they never did. We ended up leaving and going to another restaurant 3 blocks where we had great service. Several people were standing at the door waiting on a table which there were plenty of dirty tables but the staff refused to clean them. That other people ended up walking out as well. read more

The fried chicken was EXCELLENT - the service, not so much. Our server was a bit disorganized and made us feel as if we were interrupting her when we asked for drink refills and extra napkins - which only happened once. Then we never saw her ago in. Large clean restaurant that has that hometown country charm. Never had anything bad here. You must definitely try the coleslaw here it is awesome. Fried chicken is broasted and very good. Food was okay, service was mediocre. Had the Manhattan Beef which is open-faced roast beef, large serving just wasn't crazy about the flavor of the gravy. Had a side salad which was a handful of bagged salad with 3 tomato slices on top. Very pathetic. My husband's fried chicken was good and my kids enjoyed their burgers, but overall wasn't impressed. My first trip here, and although it wasn't a good experience, I plan on returning and will update this review if needed. Now about my trip. I went with a friend and we ordered the same thing. Omelet, home fries, biscuits and gravy. My omelet came out wrong, ingredients not close to what I ordered, but didn't send it back because I can usually eat whatever they put in it. Not this time. Sausage tasted unlike any I have tasted before. Cheese had no taste, and mushrooms tasted like they had been in a can too long. Add to that it was overcooked. Home fries are not real home fries. Bagged potatoes that tasted like cheap French fries. I would be embarrassed to pass these off as home fries. Biscuits were on the small side but okay. Gravy was just okay. Now my biggest complaint. The bathroom had no soap other than a bottle of dishwashing liquid, which would have been fine except I couldn't rinse the stuff off my hands. I never got it completely off even after rinsing my hands for at least 5 minutes. Once I got back to the table my friend was stirring his fork in his glass of water. I asked him what he was doing and he said the silverware smelled funny, and sure enough it was the same stuff in the bathroom. The Lavender smell was so strong you could taste it on the fork. This was one of the best experiences of our mini-trip. Part bar, part family restaurant, part pizza parlor, this place can't quite make up it's mind what it wants to be. And, for the most part, it works. We stopped in on Friday night for ice cream (we're heard locals talk about their hand dipped, home made ice cream) and we weren't disappointed. We both had sundaes, and the ice cream, while perhaps not spectacular, was well above average. Friday also happens to be Karaoke night, and since it's an all ages venue, it was fun to see kids singing Karaoke. The servers were a bit harried, since there was a HUGE crowd there, but they did a capable job and treated everyone with a smile. Sunday evening, we decided to stop here for a dinner on the way home, since they had several dishes on their menu that we wanted to try. Holly had the fried chicken, and it was, simply, out of this world. Nice, crisp breading and tender, moist chicken. The flavor was wonderful, and the price certainly was right...2 piece chicken dinner with salad and potato for $4.99. Yes, you read that right. $4.99. If this place was near where I live, I'd NEVER go to KFC again. I had a Patty Melt, and it was quite good, also. I thought it was just a bit smaller than most patty melts, but the meat was well above average and the skin on fries are really, REALLY good. I added a side salad, and the side salad is a cut above most side salads, with a nice mix of greens. Both times we visited there, they were a bit under staffed, so I'll knock off a star for that....but, other than that, it was a quite good experience, BOTH times. If I could give this place no stars I would! To start off, my family and I visited the Liberty Bell Store where we saw a cockroach curled up in a package of straws dead. Which should have been the first sign the restaurant was no good. After debating whether to go in for five minutes we decided to go in and take a seat. When a rude waitress approached our table. We got waters that were served in dirty cups. After about ten minutes she finally took our order. I received what looked to be the five dollar seafood pack from Save a Lot and cold fries. My girlfriend received a baked potato that looked like it came from a school lunch and a warm, soggy smashed down bed of lettuce with two frozen slices of tomatoes. My sister received a plate of food with a very long, curly strand of hair. At best, I would never come back let alone bring my dog there. It was a bad experience overall, and I was very disappointed with everything about this disgusting place. read more

We used to love making the drive from Richmond for great chicken and pizza was good also. The end of January we made the drive on a Sunday afternoon hopefully missing the Sunday rush. Well it must've been late enough because strange as it seemed the place was dead. The order was placed about 5:50pm. Chicken and a pizza was ordered. Drinks, came promptly, we have always liked the way they have Coke and Pepsi. Time passed, 6:10 and I see our waitress out front having a smoke break. Figured the other waitress was covering for her as in the past visits and expecting our order any time. 6:20 passes no food, keep in mind there were only 2 - 3 tables even used at this time. 6:25 finally food arrives. My wife's chicken fine but not as hot as it should have been. My pizza was delivered on the pan and not offered a plate. Not a deal breaker, I'm a guy and fingers and pan was OK, mainly because the pizza wasn't piping hot like it should have been. We were not asked for refills on our drinks and the check as dropped off 2 - 3 minutes after the food arrived. We finished not happy with the service or food. The check was $21 and change. I pay with a debit card but decided to leave a cash 2 dollar tip reflecting the poor service. I paid the check with the card marking out the tip line on the receipt. Decided it would be a while before returning and wondered why the service was so poor. A few days later I was checking my checking account online when to my surprise I see the Liberty Bell Restaurant change of $26 and the same change. I'm not a big tipper and would never leave over 20% tip even for great service. I contacted the bank to dispute charge and over the past 7 or so weeks haven't heard or been charged the $21.. Did the waitress try to add a $5 tip or did the managers try to scam extra and got busted. So be careful where you go.. read more

Last Sat., the 13th of July, we drove approx. 40 minutes to the restuarant, which we have done many times over the past 20 years and I ordered 4 piece chicken dinner (7.99 on menu) and the wife ordered chicken livers (6.99 on menu) but when we got the bill a surcharge of 3 bucks was added to mine and 2 bucks for my wife's. This was not explained or posted on the menu for the additional costs. Sunday, the 14th I sent an email for the reason but as of today no response. Period. Overpriced and underspiced, with staff that blames you behind your back for their mistakes. That was our experience here on this trip. My family and me ate here. I had a cod sandwich with fries and coleslaw. The coleslaw was the only thing that was remotely okay, it was a little on the sweet side but had a good acidity balance. First off my dad ordered a house salad with his meal and blue cheese dressing for his salad. When the salad was brought out there was no dressing on or around the salad. This in of itself is not a huge issue, we simply informed the waitress about it. She said, and I quote "Is there not dressing on that salad? I could have sworn I put that dressing on there. Oh well Ill get you some more". I myself got up to use the bathroom which happens to take me right past where the servers work and go into the kitchen. Upon passing my server was loudly talking to another server and I heard her say "I put dressing on that salad, I KNOW I DID" and the other waitress agreed with her and told her she did. Now, she physically saw the salad on her table, and saw there was no dressing on it, so why would she go back up and complain loudly and in front of all the other customers that she put it on there? I don't know....... I suppose I'm nitpicking, but as someone who works in restaurants, it's just unprofessional to see someone talking and acting like that in front of all her other customers. I would have let it go, but the food wasn't very good either. The meal that I had was 9.99, and in the picture for the food (yes I know, the picture doesn't always reflect the food) the fish sandwich showed the meat, lettuce, and a white sauce (mayonnaise or tartar? I couldn't tell) served on a kaiser bun, but when served I was just given the meat, on a plan bun. No lettuce, no mayo. Now, under normal circumstances I would have just asked for the missing condiments, but after hearing what I heard the server say I was honestly disinclined to point out anymore errors. Who would want to point out an issue or mistake, even an honest or simple one, when you think the person you are telling is just going to go talk crap about it behind your back to everyone? Not it. The fries had no salt, no pepper, nothing. Just grease and starch. Theres alot of ways this meal could have been good, alot of simple things that could have been easily fixed, not done, or handled better. Any of it would have improved my trip. What I was left with however was a feeling of overpriced, underseasoned food, and a kitchen staff who must not care about attention to detail (I mean really, who serves just a fish sandwich on a plain bun? not even fast food places would do that to you) and servers who serve each others egos more than their guests. I truly hope this isnt the norm for them, maybe it was a bad day? Maybe they were short staffed? Maybe I should have manned up and asked for the missing condiments. I will never know, as I won't be going back. 10-14 a plate for a chance to be disappointed isn't a risk I'm willing to take again. read more

Liberty Bell has a large dining area and an even larger menu. They offer pressure fried chicken, Mexican, Italian, steaks, burgers, breakfast and more. Unfortunately, the focus is on quantity, not quality. Everything our party ordered was just okay. The sirloin tips were tough and had an off taste. The cube steak was actually a JTM-type meat patty covered in gravy. The kids spaghetti was way overcooked and swimming in water. Speaking of water, it rained hard during our visit and the dining room had leaks everywhere. According to our server, the water pouring out of the ceiling is a normal occurrence, though there were some new leaks this storm. The aforementioned server did a pretty good job. There were a couple of others that seemed really spaced out and scatterbrained; glad we didn't get one of them. In the end, this place is one of the few choices in the area, so if we lived here, we'd probably go back eventually. read more

Stopped here for lunch the other day with my mom. It took a while for the waitress to come take our orders, but it was understandable because, like others have pointed out, the restaurant seems understaffed. When we did get to order the waitress was very friendly and helpful. We decided to play it safe and got the chicken strip meal. We ordered our meals with fries and green beans, both were pretty average. The chicken however, was delicious! The atmosphere was great, very casual and welcoming.
