The Sausage Cheddar Sandwich with egg and peppers on rosemary bread was delicious and oh so rich and filling--half for breakfast, half for lunch. Even with reduced hours Sage Hills is even more busy--not their first rodeo--they began 18 years ago on Spring Street, then moved to this luxurious site six years ago. Beyond sandwiches, I found quiche, biscuits, and gravy, fruit and yogurt, and steel cut oatmeal. This pretty much rounds out anything you'd want for breakfast or lunch. Again, there were not a lot of options and I was driving so I was unable to read the reviews. When we pulled up to the address, we thought it was a residence with three cars parked outside. We double-checked the information and saw a sign that this was indeed The Raven and Rooster. We also found something that said they offer outdoor seating, but we didn't see anything like that. Because we travel with our dog, I asked my husband to go in and check while I waited outside with her. When he came back he confirmed that although it looks like a house, the front room area has been converted to look like a restaurant with multiple tables. He was told there was outdoor seating in the rear and that we could walk around and seat ourselves. There were some shrubs to the right of the building with a small break between them and the building, so we assumed that was the way to get to the rear from the outside because there was no obvious route. As we were walking through the gravel area on the side of the house, someone inside the kitchen area began banging on the window. It scared me. I looked up to see a man waving his arms at us. I could not make out what he was saying but he seemed very angry. We continued to the rear and there was a small deck with a few tables on it. I told my husband that this all felt very weird and I didn't not feel like staying. He said he was very hungry and couldn't find anywhere else to eat in the area, so I agreed to stay. The setup in the back looked more like somebody's backyard with a few tables, then a restaurant patio. After a while, a young boy (maybe 13) came outside with some menus. I got the impression that this is a small family-run operation where the owner and his son most likely live on site and run this small business together. While I respect the effort that goes into running a small business, as a customer, the experience still matters. After seeing a menu prices I again told my husband that I wanted to leave. I was not expecting to pay $30+ per plate to get bit by mosquitoes at what felt like a neighbor's potluck. He again, replied that he was starving and asked if we could just please get through it. He ordered the brisket and I ordered the nachos. After placing our order, the young man said it would be a very long wait for food. He was right. They were also out of some items which made the menu more limited but I do understand that as they are kind of out in the middle of nowhere. When our food finally arrived, I thought that there had been a mistake or perhaps they were out of the items to make my meal as well. I asked the young man if he was sure that he had brought me the correct plate and he said yes. I explained that I had ordered nachos and there were no chips on my plate. My husband also enjoyed his brisket. Unfortunately, the food is the only part of this experience that can earn any stars. There were bugs everywhere, the patio furniture was dirty and because the sun was going down it got freezing cold by the time we finally received our food and finished eating. We ended up spending around $80 for the two of us to eat. If we paid a lower price for a casual roadside meal, I think I could be more forgiving about the slow service, unusual setup and lack of ambiance, but at that price point, I expect the overall dining experience to be more polished. I had hoped this would be a cozy dog friendly stop on our road trip. Instead it felt awkward, expensive, slow and incredibly uncomfortable. The food was good but not good enough to save this unpleasant experience.
