We frequent NY & usually stay at partnered hotels but really glad we decided to try this hotel instead. & I'll share why: Check in/service: We had the utmost pleasure to get checked in by the most warmest & thoughtful team member! & her name is Luisa. I know it's her job but she seemed really proud to represent being part of Refinery Hotel & her attitude and willingness to assist us really set the tone for our 4 nights/5 day trip. As frequent travelers, we've noticed that as prices are higher, the hospitality within the hospitality industry has declined. Significantly. But she went out of her way to make us feel special & welcome. To the point we'd get excited every time we saw her in passing! So thank you girl for everything. You truly made our stay so pleasant, we just might make Refinery Hotel our home away from home whenever we're in town! Everyone from the door men to the cleaning crew, were so kind & welcoming Rooms: spacious (especially for NY standards), clean with a great blend of old school NY & modernism. As someone who struggles with lower back pain, that got worse after having a baby, I was so grateful for all the delicious sleep I was able to enjoy. I don't know what the brand of the bed is and their assortment of pillows, but whoever chose them love people. And their sleep haha but now I must know! They also provide LE LABO products! Every shower & hand washing felt luxurious & for an old building (it used to be an old hat factory), it had good water pressure & immediate heat! Food/bar: there's a cute jazz bar & very old school NY style restaurant downstairs & a beautiful rooftop bar/restaurant as well! No pool but that didn't bother us! We're from Los Angeles so that doesn't really make or break our stay. Even the door men in front of the elevator for the rooftop were so nice! We didn't try the food on site but the restaurants were always busy & bustling. But the drinks are solid (: Location: loved it. We were able to walk around without an issue and we felt safe! They also have culture coffee across the street (their cookies omg) it's also easy to find because all of the car services we used never had an issue finding the hotel. There's also a souvenir store conveniently located a few steps away so it was nice to have options for last minute gifts. Beautiful hotel, spacious king room. Great location to Bryant Park and local surroundings. I forgot a personal item and they supplied me with one. I was happy that there was coffee in the room- many expensive NYC rooms do not have coffee. It was basically instant Vietnamese coffee so it looked fancy with a beautiful water kettle but the coffee was just eh. Still, better than no coffee. My only real complaints was that unlike some other NYC hotels who have soundproofed the windows, this hotel did not. That being said, we were on the 12th floor - the happening rooftop bar is on 13th and we did not hear that. Or was just outside noise. You can hear all the trucks, horns etc drive by. Had a wonderful check in and first few nights! The hotel is clean and the majority of the staff had excellent customer service. Had an issue with a couple of the front desk staff on our last night/morning; however, the manager quickly called to make things right and went above and beyond to make us feel like valued guests. Would definitely come back in the future and trust that the issues we experienced will be addressed so others don't have the same issues. My lovely bride and I stayed in a nice room on the 12th floor during the week before Christmas. There was some street noise, but it wasn't bothersome to us. We like to hear the sounds of NYC. The bed was comfy. The bathroom looked a little dated but everything worked fine. The front desk team is friendly and helpful. The hotel's location is excellent - easy walking distance to Bryant Park and the Public Library. Near Zucker's for morning bagels. Across the street is Culture Espresso, which makes a beautiful cappuccino as well as the best chocolate chip cookie in the city. Highly recommended. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet this hotel was, despite being in Mid-town close to Times Square. There is currently construction going on in the building across the street, but you can request a room facing away from the main street. Our room was very quiet that way. The hotel gives off a classy old-school vibe, so it tailors more to the older crowd. However, I did see some millennials wearing scantly clad clothing riding in the elevators. There is a rooftop bar that seems to be closed for private events quite often, but if it's open, it's a nice atmosphere for a drink in the summer. Maybe the millennials were headed to the rooftop bar only. 1 star off: At 3AM one night, a false fire alarm went off. Rather than shutting it down right away, they made multiple announcements that it was a false alarm. I'm pretty certain one announcement at 3AM would have been enough. read more

I reached out to the hotel to make a group reservation. They connected me quickly with the right person and it all went smoothly from there. They were super nice about the changes I made, as people in my group were making their last minute plans, which changed our reservation a few times. When I checked in the process was smooth. All the staff were super friendly and always kept offering me water which was perfect because I was dehydrated. I also made a reservation for the rooftop and ended up needing to change it from a partial to a buyout because of our group size and they smoothly and quickly accommodated us. Came here for just a one night weekend stay, but the Refinery did everything in their power to make it a memorable one! Even from booking, the staff made it easy and communication was fluid. They assured me that even if the room wasn't ready for early check-in, they would be able to securely hold on to our bags while it was prepared and we were out. But they managed to go above and beyond and not only have the room ready ahead of time for us, but they provided us with all kinds of nice goodies as part of our anniversary to help us celebrate. All the staff we worked with were nothing but friendly and welcoming, excellent customer service from the lobby to the rooftop, literally (don't skip out on the bar up there, it's a perfect night cap). The building can be a little mazey feeling, but the rooms are wonderful with beautiful decor that emulates a more old school NYC and amenities that are great too with comfy beds and a pristine bathroom, although I personally could have gone for a slightly stronger head, I'll take the anesthetic on this one. Would be glad to stay here anytime I was staying around midtown, and you should too. read more

Booking was easy, rooms are clean, and they have a partnership with the parking garage across the street. The parking part was really convenient and my vehicle was kept safe and secured in a garage for 4 days. There is a restaurant attached on ground level and their own rooftop bar/restaurant, but perfect walking distance to plenty of shopping and other restaurants and close subway access. The staff was friendly and no issues with check in/out or having bags held. It was a plus that there was a pop up shop in the space attached to the hotel where I could enjoy late drinks and shopping. read more

The Refinery Hotel is a place that I would stay again if I needed a Bryant Park location. The hotel is a bit spotty in my opinion, however. Let's start with the good stuff - the service is outstanding! Bryan at the Front Desk was particularly good - very accommodating, polite, engaging, talkative and friendly. He was knowledgeable and took control of things nicely! But, I have to say that everyone I came into contact with was very high end and good. Even the housekeeper was very well spoken and friendly. The roof top is gorgeous with a spectacular view of the Empire State Building front & center! This made for some good selfies to send to friends. The architecture of the hotel is interesting in a good way. Coved ceilings, arched doors, designer touches are apparent throughout. But I have to admit that the interior is getting a bit tired and dingy looking. I think it might be time for a refresh and some renovation. We were given a top floor room and, at first, we were very happy about that. You know, without someone above you, you won't hear footsteps and other noise from a guest above you. But the beautiful rooftop bar is busy well into the night (Saturday night there was a private birthday party there) and the music and noise from the rooftop is rather jarring. Also, the lobby - which is rather small by modern standards - is very busy in the evenings because of the number of people who are going up to the rooftop bar. They also segregate 1 of the 3 elevators just for the rooftop which is nice for safety reasons. But, that also means that waiting for an elevator can take a long time. From a design standpoint, the room lacked cohesiveness and splash. There was nothing wrong with the individual pieces of furniture and the artwork there. However, the large room seemed empty and drab despite the nice furnishings. The bathroom was nicely decorated, however, just in a style that did not really match the modern/sparse decor of the room itself. The large stand-up shower was great. Likewise, the products for shampoo, hair conditioner, body wash and body lotion were really high end. So, I feel like this review is a tale of 2 hotels. Some highs, some lows and, in general, it fit the bill but I am not giving a 100% perfect score for it. Would I recommend it to others? Maybe. Yes. Probably. I will start with saying something nice. The Hotel is in a good location and I like that the coat hangers are removable from the closet. Now I'm going to dish. The amount of niggling details surpassed the one or two that could be overlooked. I will now list them so that some day the general manager might actually go inside a room to see if these details make for the Excellent Hotel they seem to be striving for, at least with their room rate. The Bathroom: There are all these golden grip bars surrounding the toilet, including one behind the seat. The one behind the seat makes the toilet seat not stay up. You have to hold it with one hand or your knee while you urinate. Did someone sign off on this? The shower: your showerhead is attached to a vertical rail which allows it to adjust up and down. Unfortunately, the highest you can adjust the shower head is absurdly too low for a regular-sized human. This is such an obvious mistake that begs the question if anyone in management noticed this. The bed platform extends beyond the actual mattress and the corners are sitting there at shin level. I cannot imagine anyone staying there not whacking their shin on this protrusion at least once. The Television: When you go to a hotel room, you may want to plop down on the bed and turn on the TV. What you don't want then is a bunch of red-tape and prompts. You don't want to have to pull out your phone and type in a code and all that business. Is this really the best you can do for your guests? The Minibar: my God, the Minibar was everywhere. There was no room in the fridge for anything we brought in, plus all this booze and candy was taking up a large portion of the remaining available surface area. One thing they had no room for was a price list for any of this. If you have to ask... The Tackiness: From all the gold colored horseshit to the fake antique telephones, this place has some work to do. For example, the do not disturb sign is ridiculous and could be emblematic of why this place is a swing and a miss. Instead of the standard "do not disturb" that fits simply over the doorknob and flips over to say "please clean room," this sign says, I kid you not, "ENJOYING THE MOMENT PLEASE POP BY LATER" and when you flip it over it says "ENJOYING THE MOMENT PLEASE POP BY LATER". To add to the innovation, the thing is printed on cork and dangles awkwardly and amateurishly from some kind of wire or gimp. You have to see this to see how pathetic it is. I'll put a photo below. This is what the management seems to be concerning themselves with instead of more obvious things. Not every innovation is an improvement. The Lighting: The king bed we slept in had plugs and a light switch on only one side of the bed, so the other person had no access to light or their phone if they wanted to both charge it and have it nearby. There was a small auxiliary light next to my side which I tried to turn on but it didn't work. There was also a ridiculous space-sucking floor lamp in the corner that went on automatically somehow. We couldn't find the switch for it, so we unplugged it. Again, attention to details is not what the General Manager seems to consider part of their job. This place could easily be better. read more

Actually 4 1/2 stars! ;-) Overall I had a great experience at The Refinery Hotel. The staff were outstanding throughout - front-desk, restaurant, rooftop, and especially the jazz bar. I personally really like the retro styling, evoking a bygone era in NYC, with small touches throughout the hotel and rooms. Room was a decent size, especially for NYC, with high ceilings. Bed was super comfortable and well-appointed. I would have preferred a standard dresser but recognize that plenty of places want to economize on space and there were enough drawers and a big closet so it worked out. One minor gripe - the shower did not get hot, only lukewarm, but it was my decision to not alert the staff. At one time or another I was in the Jazz bar, rooftop lounge, and restaurant. All were quite good, with highlights being the layout and view in the rooftop lounge, and the staff service in the Jazz bar. The fitness center had all the right equipment, but the space was too cramped - really not usable by more than 3 people at a time. And it followed an evolving, inconvenient, trend at hotels of not having a restroom in the center or nearby. Location was perfect for me. Near all kinds of restaurants, the park, NYC sights, Broadway theater, subway, and more. Pricing was really good when I booked directly. A small irritation is the $45 daily "facility fee" for every room. This covers all the "nice extras", wine on arrival and in the rooms, coffee, and more - sorry, but that should just be rolled into the quoted room rate. The refinery was good. Not great. Good parts- - Decent sized room. I think I paid $650 per night for around for a "suite" that was about 425sf. Not bad for the location. (It had been $750 but I called them up and said they were advertising the room for $100 less per night a week after I made the reservation so they took that off the tab... very cool. Many places would do that but they made it easy.) - Everyone super cool from housekeeping to front desk to guy that mans the elevator to the rooftop bar. -Nice lobby bar, great overall vibe... dim/cool -AC/Heat worked great -Bathroom clean... everything pretty clean Not-as-great parts: The room did not impress. Super dark rugs that I figured hid a lot of things. Everything clean but a bit tired. I did not want to hang out there. Or send pix to friends to say "check out my room!" Same with the vinyl floors... if you install flooring the color of grime and dirt, it's hard to see what is floor and what is dirt. But I guess that's the whole point. -No coffee in the room and the coffee downstairs started at 7A, I think... so walked to coffee shop every morning. Excellent stay and service at the hotel. We arrived a couple hours before check-in time and they were able to put us in our room early with no extra charge. I sat down to play piano at the jazz bar in the sleek lobby while we were waiting and as a thank you for my performance the receptionist gave me a free Refinery candle! Such a sweet gift. The room was clean and very spacious with a nice view of the Empire State Building, plus nice bathroom amenities. Bed was very comfortable and the TV had a lot of great channels including HBO. Be very careful. Ok. Had a meeting in NYC, so like you I was excited to book at The Refinery. Went on the site. I like booking direct but Booking.com was $200 cheaper per night. My meeting was postponed a couple of weeks a few days later (4 or 5 max) So I called Booking.com. I wasn't looking for a refund, just a credit for the next few weeks. They of course tried to "advocate" for me to no avail. So I called the hotel directly. Sorry, there is nothing we can do was the reply. Now, I travel to NYC 4 times a year and bring 4-6 people twice a year. Was the $800 worth that much. Again, I would have stayed in the next few weeks and maybe more..... Guess, they will never know....but it gives you a glimpse of the mentality. read more

This hotel is in an amazing location, in close proximity to restaurants, Broadway and Times Square. We arrived mid-day and asked if the hotel could keep our luggage while we walked around exploring. We were told that we could check in which was so convenient. Our room was very spacious with an updated bathroom and sitting area. The price was steep but we were in NY so we expected to pay a rate to reflect that. The bonus was that the hotel offered a happy hour with complimentary wine and beer from 5-7 pm. Comfortable and stylish lodging, though the in-house restaurant and bars range from "a little loud" to "can't possibly be under the legal decibel limit." We enjoyed our stay in the Refinery. Rooms are spacious by NYC standards, with nice attention to details like touch-button "relax" lighting settings, USB ports in the clock, comfortable bed and bedding, and a modest selection of alcohol in the room (of the "you open it, you buy it" variety). It's reasonably quiet, and convenient to Penn Station and MSG. Staff is friendly - though the front desk assured us the doorman could flag us a cab - but we never, in 3 days, actually SAW a doorman. The hotel includes a restaurant, a jazz lounge, and a rooftop bar - we visited all three. The jazz lounge was by far the most appealing; comfortable, with a warm and friendly bartender and pleasant - if slightly too loud for easy conversation - live jazz. We had brunch in the restaurant, and that was satisfactory, and briefly visited the rooftop bar (which I would actually call a small nightclub) - the rooftop bar is probably fine for upscale 20-something folks who want their setting trendy and their music ear-crushingly loud! I mean, we had literally just come from seeing KISS's farewell show at Madison Square Garden - and the music in the rooftop bar was ***SO. MUCH. LOUDER.*** than the concert had been. If we stay at the Refinery again, I'll do more advance research to find places for a quiet meal or that stay open for a post-show drink, since all the venues in the hotel skewed at least a bit loud. Overall, while we liked the hotel, I think it's really catering to a trendy younger demographic than our own. But if need be I'd stay here again. read more

I cannot say enough good things about my stay at the Refinery Hotel. From the moment you walk through the front doors to the lobby you are welcomed by a beautiful scent of their signature candles burning in the lobby. The lobby area itself has tons of room to walk around and a beautiful bar and lounge area. Checking in was a breeze and the hotel staff was nothing but friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. They made us feel comfortable and welcome. When we got up to our room we were pleasantly surprised by how large the room was especially for New York. The ceilings were high, the windows were large and let in plenty of natural light, and their was room for two of us to open our luggage comfortably on the floor and still have walking room. Everything was incredibly clean and well kept. Room service was also very speedy to bring up a new blow dryer to our room (since the handle on the one in ours was a bit faulty). The complimentary Le Labo soaps in the bathroom were very luxurious and so were the robes. I also loved the complimentary coffee in the lobby each morning. The doorman also helped load our luggage and call a cab when it was time to go to the airport. I cannot say enough good things about this hotel or experience. We booked this hotel for my friend's 30th birthday in the city. Although it was pricey, the location was ideal. We didn't know until we checked in that it would be worth every penny and exceed all of our expectations. Raymond at the front desk greeted us with a huge smile and a bottle of wine. When we got to our room, not only was it spacious and clean, but the employees of the hotel had left two birthday banners and balloons. This jogged my memory that I accidentally left my friends birthday banner from home in the first floor bathroom. We promptly ran downstairs and asked them for help finding it. For over an hour, hotel employees helped us look for it without complaining. Lenell, Brilton, Miguel, Bryan, Paul, and Deshawn went above and beyond to locate our friend's banner. When we thought all hope was lost and returned to our room, we got a knock on the door and Deshawn had found the banner and returned it to us. Never once did they ever complain. From hotel security to front desk employees, we were blown away by their hospitality. We will be returning solely for the impeccable service and care of the hotel staff. Checkin was nice and smooth. They accommodated early checkin as available which we appreciated. We got there about 1000. Rooms are pretty small but no biggie. Service was swift. We needed more towels and a robe/slippers upon checkin and they were able to get that done while we stepped out. Calling the front desk took some time. It's best sometime to just head down. The room we got was an upgrade but when we slept on the bed first night, bed kept sinking in. We noticed piece of wood under the bed when we first entered but didn't really think much of it since we stepped out for the day. That same night our shower handle came off. And the next day, we were able to change rooms. Working shower, more comfortable bed. Everyone was friendly throughout the stay. The rooftop restaurant is able to accommodate guests. If you take the elevator up, you can easily make a reservation instead of trying to book online. read more

Very nice stay. Convenient to everything, safe and super friendly front desk staff. There's a nice rooftop bar, a bar in the lobby, and another restaurant and bar attached to the back of the hotel. Room was decent size, heat/AC worked well, good hot water and pressure. Towels were nice as was the bedding. My only complaint was that the refrigerator in the room couldn't accommodate personal drinks / snacks. Sure, I could have asked for one, but they should really consider doing away with the pre stocked, wieight activated refrigerators. There are all sorts of stores, cafes, restaurants within "spitting" distance of the hotel and this wasn't exactly the Ritz. Give us a normal refrigerator!! read more

I was not a guest here--rather, I'm writing about the bar experience including ambiance and service Sitting unassumingly in the middle of the block, Refinery Hotel is sandwiched between two other buildings, therefore one could pass by it pretty easily. They're a boutique hotel and like many other hotels, there's a rooftop. When I arrived, the line was growing down the block for rooftop seating; however, I was going to play it safe and head to the indoor bar. The decor was lovely and there was a fair amount of activity going on in the lobby. To the right was the bar area with table, sofa and seats at the bar as options. It appeared there was some cheese and crudites available but had been removed shortly after my arrival. Service was very attentive and friendly. I ordered a Pinot Grigio and shared some fries but there were other food options available. The wine was crisp and delicious. Towards the end of my visit, the ceiling started to leak across certain parts of the room (faulty a/c?) causing my legs to get a bit wet. Same for others sitting in the area. I've stayed at this hotel twice now and was very happy both times. Check in process is smooth and efficient and hotel rooms are very clean. The location is what sold me both times. It's in walking distance of all the "must haves" new York has to offer. In the evenings they have a great roof top. The only down fall is that one of the elevators is dedicated to the roof top, so it slows down the ability to get to your room. Other than that, I can't wait to stay here again! read more

I recently stayed at the refinery hotel and y'alls need to grab a drink because this is an experience!!!! I have been to the rooftop and have read wonderful reviews about the Refinery Hotel so I was excited to finally check this place out. They have an amazing deal that includes parking in your reservation which is across the street from the hotel, and 2 complimentary drinks that are part of reservation (to claim at the rooftop). I have never been blown away in my life by a hotel. As someone who has previously worked in boutique hotels, every time I step into a hotel, my hotel management hat comes out and everything becomes second nature, and I look at every detail and every staff member. Obviously due to COVID, lots of changes are made but even with that, I was still blown away by the service and the impact. I was able to get an affordable nightly rate for an amazing space and thinking that for most NY hotels like any NY apartments, all spaces will be a bit tight. I did not expect to get so much space! I had a King size bed, with a closet, a huge bathroom and shower with so much detail and an actual desk, and even a corner chair that could serve as a reading nook. They seal the rooms for you so as soon as they clean the place and they even use UV lighting to clean the minibars, they put a sticker on the door, so you know no one has entered your room besides housekeeping. The hotel smelled so clean and fresh, it was seriously the best thing to walk into. The front desk staff was so hospitable, they went above and beyond to help me and guide me through my whole reservation and stay. Once you arrive to your room, you are the only one who can break the sticker once you open the door. I got a complimentary bottle of Red Wine as I booked the room as a birthday gift and had no idea that the owners made their own red wine. I normally don't like dry red wines, but DAMN WAS IT GOOD!!!! I would buy it if it was available online or even in the hotel for purchase! Upon check-in, the person at the front desk was so hospitable and nice, I forgot to get her name but thank you for being so wonderful. The bed was so comfortable along with the sheets and pillows, I have not had a good night's sleep in my own apartment. And let me tell you, whenever I have my dream house, you damn know I will be calling the hotel to ask what kind of bed, where did they buy it, and what sheets and pillows they use as I will purchase that for my dream house!!!! You will be sleeping like it was 2019 (Pre-Apocalypse) y'all!!! In booking a reservation, you get complimentary perks that you can select from, so if you want discounts to coffee shops, tours, chocolate places, or even their online shop, they provide you a discount code for the vendors they partnered with 24 hours prior to your arrival. I wanted to purchase the branded wine/bottle opener and saw it was sold out and they didn't have any in the hotel. When I checked out the GM gave us a complimentary candle, which was one of my top options and I even was willing to purchase another bottle of wine and they gave us another bottle as a birthday gift! WOW! They asked us about our stay, if we needed anything, guided us through everything and he even held our bags while we had breakfast outside. I wanted to place a tip for the team, but the manager did not even want to take it from me and that was when I was blown away. That is a person and manager of leadership, ethics, and quality and I trust that a manager like Tyler, who helped us that day, is a great asset to the hotel and a great leader to a team during this difficult time. Tyler, thank you for making our stay so memorable, for being so courteous and for your outstanding hospitality. They think of every detail that a guest may need and have it in the room. They have water, sparkling water, candy, sodas, razors, chargers, universal charges (all for purchase), but so convenient in case you need it for emergencies. Just looking at the items in the room, you can tell someone went above and beyond to think of EVERYTHING. And I mean everything!! I can not express how much I was extremely blown away. If I were still in the hotel industry, it would be an honor to work for this hotel and team and due to my background managing boutique hotels in Miami Beach, my standards are always a bit higher than a regular guest and let me tell you, I am speechless and blown away. Dear Refinery Hotel team, management, housekeeping, and all staff, Thank you so much for all the details, the efforts, you have done just to make my short stay as memorable as possible. You have me as a loyal guest and a huge fan of the Refinery Hotel brand and I will definitely be back. Bravo to you! A very beautiful hotel. This hotel goes above and beyond for the guest needs. The staff here and guest service agent communicate all so well. What I love about this boutique hotel is the design and signature scent. The candles here smell amazing. They always have beautiful fresh flowers & keep there bathrooms nice and clean. Complimentary wine & happy hour on some days they definitely know how to welcome you in ^.^ . Also a tip rooftop bar sometimes is closed for private event so always call and ask. This place can get really popular with the rooftop bar on the 13th floor. In the summer time expect lines for the rooftop bar. There's views of the Empire State and a fire lounge area and great djs so of course there's going to be lots of people but worth the wait. The hotel has also a restaurant in the lobby Parker and Quinn and the food there is very delicious. If I had to pick hotels to stay in NYC this one would definitely be on my list. It's a beautiful chic boutique hotel and it's great for first timers in NYC as Times Square & herald square is all walking distance. read more

My family had an amazing stay at the Refinery Hotel. Service was fantastic due to the great attitudes of the staff. No crabby, overwhelmed workers. Thanks. The rooms vary in size. Corner rooms are a bit bigger and preferred if you can get one. I would definitely say this hotel is a great value for NYC and we look forward to our next trip. read more

Great value in midtown. The rooms have nice high ceilings and the beds are very comfortable. One of the best features of the rooms were the "blackout shades" that worked perfectly and kept the room completely dark. If you're parking, there is a garage just across the street and there is a very useful loading zone right in front of the hotel so you won't need to double-park. Staff was friendly and let us have a late check-out as I needed to be on a conference call that started at their noon checkout time. I didn't get a chance to check out the rooftop lounge as it was booked for a private event. I would have liked to check it out, but there are plenty of other spots in the area for a drink on a rooftop. Maybe next time. read more
