We came across a food truck depot after arriving to the airport in Maui. There were various options of food, and quite frankly...all the food was good as I was able to sample food from my husband and step daughters. However, I chose to try a hot poke dish from Like Poke? which is different from the kind of poke we have in California. I was very pleased with the dish and devoured my meal. Was hungry after leaving Costco so we decided to visit this food truck area for some lunch. I LOVE poke and seafood so I just had to give Like Poke? A try. The prices seem normal compared to similar dishes found elsewhere. The portions are pretty good. The food was tasty and we enjoyed it. I ordered the hurricane fried poke which was fried ahi poke topped with a wasabi aioli and furikake. Great portion size and really good flavor. My boyfriend got the baked salmon. Also a nice sized portion topped with a mayo mixture and furikake. I got to sneak a bite before he devoured it so I can tell you, his dish was just as tasty as mine. The fish here is good, seems fresh. The two flavorings I got in their Poke Bowl Combo was Hawaiian and Shoyu Ginger. Both were very salty to the point I couldn't eat any more after a few bites. There was also very little rice compared to the fish which could be a good thing, but since my flavors were very salty, I wanted a little more rice. The portion size is decent but it's overpriced by about USD$3-5, IMHO. The girl was friendly & bubbly. A very good sign. There were a lot of people but our order arrived pretty fast. The fried poke had a delicious & wonderful crust, but the cooked tuna inside just reminded me of plain cooked tuna and was rather ordinary. This would be ok for cooked tuna lovers, but definitely not my thing. The shoyu ginger poke was fantastic, refreshing, and (I don't use these words lightly) TO DIE FOR! I couldn't believe the taste and the size of the fish I got when I ordered my plate. But more on that later. To quote Sunset Magazine: "Just five minutes from the airport, in a warehouse parking lot where tourists would never go, is some of the island's best poke. Danny Kalahiki mixes it to order in his vintage-style quilted-steel lunch wagon. Must-have: the ahi shoyu wasabi poke. The marinade is a perfect balance of salty, sweet, spicy, and umami. Locals eat lunch early, so it's best to get there around 11." I have to concur that it is imperative that you get to this truck early because with it being situated near blue collar businesses, many of the employees have already made plans ahead of time to be in line right away and order their favorites. So get there early. All the fish plates were $10.00 each. It included 2 scoops rice (of course) and your choice of entree over a bed of greens (at least both my lunches looked that way). Food was divided into 3 categories and the menu at the time I visited was: "COW' - Hamburger Steak "HIPPY FOOD" - Katsu and Poke "FISH" - Katsu, Poke Bowl, Fried Bone, and Garlic Belly. We found this place while searching for food near the airport, and this place showed up. It only had a handful of reviews, but all of them sounded promising. We ended up eating here on our second attempt of finding this place because it was tucked away in an old industrial area stationed in front of a warehouse. The sign is small, but it's basically the only food truck around, so keep your eyes wide open! When we arrived, there was already a small line formed. We saw other Asians waiting around for their food (always a good sign, since Asians tend to go the extra mile for good food). I read that the fish tends to run out fast, so I crossed my fingers and hoped that they would still be available at 10:30am. Thankfully, their ahi tuna was still available, so the Hubby and I each ordered their most popular items: fried ahi and ahi poke. The food was out in a spiffy (love that!) and the workers were friendly. The Hubby loved his fried ahi, which was okay for me since I'm not a huge fan of fried foods. I tried my ahi poke and was in love. They gave us chunks of the freshest ahi tuna I've ever tasted, pretty sure it was caught this morning. Nothing says aloha more than a gigantic serving of poke with rice and potato salad!The four of us all chose the poke bowl option, two of us had the Hawaiian poke, one had the Spicy poke, and one had Shoyu Wasabi poke. I loove poke. I mean, having lived in Hawaii my whole life, I grew up eating poke at least 3-5 times a week. Foodland has always been my go-to place for poke. But I finally tried Like Poke one weekend and haven't been back since. I went with two of my friends and they both ordered before I did. We all got pretty much similar plate lunches, poke and rice, just different sauce (plain shoyu, shoyu wasabi, etc.). Nothing baked. They except cards, which I appreciated cause now days, I don't usually carry much cash on me. Both my friends got their plate lunch about the same time. Mine didn't come out until 5 or so minutes later. In that waiting period, I had time to go buy lemonade from the truck next door and sit down with my friends and taste their food. After having done that, I went back to the window to ask if my food was ready, the lady said "Almost." Then as I walked to the side, she asked what I ordered. I told her and sure enough a couple minutes later my order was up. I think they forgot about it or something. Same happened to a family that was in front of us. One of their items took a lot longer than the rest, they had already eaten the other plates and only got the last one right before mine came out. When I opened the plate lunch, I was excited cause it looked really appetizing. I took a bite or a poke and I immediately tasted this slimy-really-fishy-like texture in my mouth. Now I know poke is fish, but I've had tons or poke in my life and I have never tasted that fishy-slimy taste, ever. I tried to fill my mouth with rice to help the taste go away a little. After a few bites, I couldn't get past it. Not only was it difficult to eat and chew cause of the taste, but I also wasnt a fan of the size they cut the poke in. It was too big of a pieces. I paid almost $14 for a plate. I'd say it was a pretty good portion and price similar to other place that sell poke plate lunches. But I will stick with Foodland poke, thank you. If you're in the mood for poke this place hits the spot! It's just a food truck in a parking lot across the street from Costco but the food was pretty legit. We got the Spicy Poke/Spicy Fried Poke Plate ($16), Ahi Katsu ($11), and the Furikake Fries ($3). I'd never had fried poke before and it wasn't bad but definitely has less flavor than regular poke. The regular spicy poke was damn good. Really fresh, huge chunks of marinated tuna with sliced onions and masago. The fries were also nomtastic. They are curly fries topped with the special sauce and Furikake seasoning, which is a mixture of sesame seeds, seaweed, bonito flakes, etc and is sweet and salty. I think their sauce is what really makes it so don't be shy about shelling out an extra $0.50 for some more sauce! 4.5 stars. We have been training for a Tuna Olympics, having eaten tuna in FL, LA and HI within a one week span. The tuna bullshit meter was very highly tuned when we hit the Like Poke? Food truck. It is a food truck in a ware house parking lot/ bring your own beverage- including water. The payoff is poke to die for. We had the poke, fried poke and ahi katzu. All three were superb. We got there at 11 and were glad to do so, as the locals came soon after and were ordering hard and fast. Best poke I have has on the island so far- will be at the four seasons tomorrow and will see what Spago has in store for me, but doubt it will top this.
