    Loco Moco

We started our food adventure in Maui at a food truck park and ended it at another food truck, Sparky's. Located in another food truck park, this one in Maui Gardens, Sparky's offers up both BBQ and Hawaiian dishes. One dish I still hadn't yet tried was a Loco Moco, and now I have. I loved it. A beef patty on a bed of rice with brown gravy? What's not to love? Eating it in a Styrofoam container with a plastic fork seemed like roughing it in a good way, a common folk way. It also came with a good little scoop of tuna salad. Sparky, or whoever it was who was running the truck, was a busy yet helpful guy when we had trouble getting my credit card to work. From reading another review explaining this is a generational Hawaiian family, I'm glad they were the ones to introduce me to Loco Moco.

We stumbled on Sparky's BBQ while exploring a food truck park--we were actually aiming for a different truck, but it was closed for a special event. Lucky for us, Sparky's came through with some solid Hawaiian barbecue. I accidentally ordered the Machiko Chicken instead of the Hurricane Chicken (my mistake!), which led to a bit of confusion--probably not helped by the fact that we had dessert before dinner. That said, the Machiko Chicken was still delicious: juicy, flavorful, and well-balanced. We shared a mini plate that came with pasta salad, which rounded it out nicely. Next time, I'm going for the Hurricane version. You gotta love the sauce--and I definitely missed out. One of the best parts about this spot is that it's inside a food truck park, so your whole group doesn't have to commit to one type of cuisine. There are options for everyone, from BBQ to Asian to dessert trucks, making it an easy and low-pressure dinner choice for families or groups. Sparky's is a great pick if you're craving Hawaiian-style BBQ in a laid-back, flexible setting.

    Spicy Pineapple Mochiko Chicken

I got the spicy pineapple chicken, mini size. I asked for it on a salad, but it seems the salad option is only for the regular size. He still threw a salad in there for me though. The chicken itself was crispy, moist, and tender - just lovely, but the spicy pineapple flavor wasn't really coming through. I do eat a lot of szechuan, indian, and thai food though, so my frame of reference for spicy food is a bit skewed.

It wasn't my absolute favorite burger ever, but it was definitely different and felt really special. But the Aloha Friday ribs were everything. The portion was huge, and they were so, so delicious. They came with cornbread too, which was also amazing. Honestly, best ribs ever. I dream about these ribs. We were literally fighting over who got to eat the last pieces. The vibes were also so good. It's open-air, there was a live singer, and there was a nice cool breeze coming through. It made the whole experience feel so relaxing and romantic. And the service was so good. Everyone was incredibly friendly and genuinely kind. At one point, I forgot my hair tie and asked one of the staff members if they had a rubber band. Another staff member overheard me and asked what I needed for my hair. She told me not to use a rubber band because it would ruin my hair, then ran to her car to get me one of her own hair ties. That was one of the sweetest things ever. Amazing food, great atmosphere and genuinely wonderful people. Easily one of my favorite meals on Maui and a place I would absolutely come back to.

The ordering process is a little more unique as they want to turn tables quickly for others, so smart, but you won't get a table until you order first. Why the 4-stars? Prices were high and you have to get up and get your own drinks from the bar, incl non-alcoholic...so although a small inconvenience, it's noticeable and could back up the tender and that small bit lost a star for me...but for others, it may not matter. We would return once we got a chance to see other places on the island, but for good food, local flavor and chill spot...yeah, it's worth the stop!

My husband and I thought we ordered a reasonable amount of food and quickly realized we may have gotten a little too ambitious. The staff was friendly, service moved quickly despite how busy it was, and the atmosphere felt very local and welcoming. There are a lot of breakfast spots on Maui, but I can see why this place is always recommended. If you're visiting, it's definitely worth stopping by at least once. The ordering system was a little weird and chaotic, though. You have to wait in line to order before finding a seat, but then also wait by the counter for your drinks. The space is pretty tight, and with families and tourists coming in, there were easily 20 people packed into the small area when we went. It felt really crowded and chaotic, and it was hard to know where to stand or wait. I also thought it was a little pricey considering how casual and chill the spot is and the amount of food you get. The food was good, but I expected either larger portions or slightly lower prices.

TIKI DAVE and family loves TIN ROOF MAUI!…read more While our cruise ship was in port, we stopped in after I did some serious research to settle upom Tin Roof and boy were we glad! Holy smokes, that Mochicko Chicken [Hawaiian-style fried chicken made by marinating bite-sized chicken pieces in a sweet and savory soy-garlic batter featuring mochiko (sweet rice flour) before deep-frying] is the bomb! Super crispy bits, amazing flavor, served over garlic noodles...man alive, if you are in Maui and don't grab takeout here, you may as well not go to Maui. It is takeout only and my wife didn't want fried food so she ordered something from the Mexican joint across the parking lot. Since she ordered food there, we figured it'd be ok to eat our heavenly chicken dishes there....NOPE; we were asked to leave. BOO. So we finished, well, the kids finished on the way to nearby Kanaha Beach Park and I finished mine there under the airport and within sight of our ship. It really is a lovely beach. Our group ordered a little bit of everything - all with garlic noodles as the side since it seemed to very popular based on the reviews. We went with the mochiko chicken (animal style), spicy ahi poke, and pork belly. Mochicko chicken was good, but some pieces were cold and fatty which wasn't very pleasant. The animal style sauce was really tasty, and didn't overpower the chicken, it complimented the plate well! The noodles weren't very garlicky at all, definitely felt it was lacking flavor. Poke was good, but the pieces of fish were in pretty large chunks. Lastly, the pork belly was just okay. As a local, I think this place is a good introduction for tourists to get a taste of local flavors. But definitely hit up some other local spots even Zippy's for comparison. Maybe I just went on a off day. To end off on a positive note they do offer a few vegetarian and vegan options!
