We left feeling underwhelmed by both dinner and breakfast. Given the restaurant's reputation and higher-end pricing, we arrived expecting a memorable dining experience, but across both meals we found the food and service fell well short of expectations. -- Dinner We started with the Roasted Tomato Soup, which tasted very similar to a canned grocery store soup - perfectly edible, but lacking the freshness and depth we expected. The Spicy Rigatoni Alla Vodka was certainly spicy, but beyond the heat it was surprisingly bland and short on flavor. Dessert - the Samoa Sundae, along with the complimentary cookies (which were a nice touch) - was the standout of the evening and genuinely excellent. We regularly dine at Michelin-starred and other fine dining restaurants, so we're more than happy to pay premium prices when the quality warrants it. Here, however, the value simply wasn't there. Charging around $40 for a basic pasta dish and $15 for simple sides like fries sets a reasonably high bar, and unfortunately the food didn't live up to those expectations. Service was friendly and attentive overall, although there were a few noticeable missteps, including dishes being served to the wrong guests and water being poured while we were in the middle of settling the bill. -- Breakfast Breakfast the following morning reinforced our overall impression. Coffee was served from an automated bean-to-cup machine rather than being freshly prepared, which felt out of place for a restaurant at this price point. We also weren't offered sugar with our coffee and had to wait until we could flag someone down. We noticed the café just a few meters away was preparing barista-made coffee and matcha drinks, but when we asked, our server wouldn't offer them from the restaurant. We then overheard her telling another table that they would need to walk over to the café to order them separately, and that these premium drinks weren't included in the complimentary hotel breakfast. The food itself was equally disappointing. The eggs were overcooked - hard, rubbery, and lacking much flavor. The deconstructed salmon bagel was an odd choice. At $28, we expected a thoughtfully composed dish, not one that required us to assemble it ourselves. It felt more like an unnecessary gimmick than an elevated presentation. The pancakes were fine, albeit slightly raw in the middle. My father is vegan and, after noticing that the only breakfast entrée suitable for his diet was the Avocado Toast, I emailed the hotel in advance to ask whether any additional options could be prepared during our three-night stay, so he wouldn't have to eat the same dish every morning. Two days later, I received a reply that essentially reiterated what was already on the menu and said my comments would be passed along to the restaurant team. Unfortunately, I never received any further communication from the restaurant team, and his dietary requirements were not acknowledged in any way during breakfast. For a hotel and restaurant positioned at this level, that was particularly disappointing. Service also slipped at the end of the meal. Once we had finished eating, our server disappeared entirely. After waiting for some time, we eventually had to go inside the restaurant to find someone so we could ask for the check, only for that employee to then head to the back to locate our server. -- Overall, both meals were adequate, but neither came close to justifying the restaurant's reputation or pricing. During our three-night stay at the hotel, we chose to dine elsewhere after our first dinner and breakfast, and left feeling that there are far better dining options available. read more

This spot was the beginning of my birthday celebrations in 2024. We had reservations and were seated promptly in the patio. The restaurant and property is so beautiful! We started with a cocktail and two mocktails- the raspberry rhapsody and minty mist. They were refreshing and colorful! Then we shared the king salmon crudo, tuna tartare, and a salad for our starters. Everything was beautifully presented! For our mains, we opted for the gnocchi, bone-in pork chop and a side of asparagus. The pork chop was very flavorful! The gnocchi was alright to me. For desserts, I got a birthday one, but we also wanted to try the churro beignets and Lillian's Wonderland. I liked that the beignets were served with dulce de leche, vanilla anglaise, and chocolate mezcal fudge. Lilian's Wonderland was a deconstructed cake with cherry chocolate mousse, meringue, dark chocolate twigs, and pistachio cake! There was definitely a lot going on! So we have been many times. It's one of our go to places. You can have breakfast, lunch or just stop for an appetizer and drink. There has never been one time service and the environment was not top notch. Always a great experience, and they provide an excellent service experience. This refined restaurant is in the heart of Rancho Santa Fe at the Inn. The bar area and lobby are warm and welcoming. The sushi here is fantastic and deserves 5 stars. Many rolls use real crab meat. They are innovative and fresh rolls. The service was friendly but they could use just a few more staff members to help during busy times. Drinks took a while to come. The lobster pasta and scallops were perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The dishes were reasonably priced for a refined restaurant. The lamb chops were ok but everyone agreed they could use a bit more salt. Food and cocktails overall are great here and the restaurant is very nice. read more

My first time here and it was a great experience. We opted for outdoor seating, and there was an umbrella that mostly shaded us from the sun. Service was friendly and quick. I ordered the Avocado Toast and added an egg and a side of bacon. The bacon was crispy just the way I like it. There was plenty of fresh avocado on the toast, and it came with a delicious pesto. I also asked for a side of balsamic to drizzle on top, which was a great addition. I enjoyed everything and will definitely be back to try their dinner menu. read more

We came here on a Tuesday for brunch, the day before Christmas Eve. It was pretty busy but we were only a party of two and fortunately were seated right away. We sat inside and the decor is beautiful and chic. We were guests at the hotel and had our dog with us, and they were very accommodating. The waiter brought him some water and was very patient with him (our dog is a bit anxious). I ordered Bloody Mary, extra spicy and it was pretty good and strong. We ordered a few things to share; the big-eye tuna pizza, roasted tomato soup, and fish tacos. The pizza isn't actually a pizza but thin pieces of tuna on top of bread. It was delicious. I loved the crispiness of the bread and tuna was fresh and light. The tomato soup came with a baguette grilled cheese and it was my favorite dish out of everything. So flavorful and tangy and paired perfectly with the grilled cheese. The fish tacos were alright. A little in the dry side unfortunately, but still tasted good. Service was great. Our waiter was super detailed in answering our questions and was also nice enough to split our soup and tacos into separate plates for us, since we were sharing (at not extra cost). Came to this lovely establishment this past weekend to celebrate my dear friend's birthday. Seeing as it appeared as pet friendly we reserved patio seating. Staff were extremely courteous and pleasant the entire time. They brought out a water bowl for my dog, which was much appreciated. Although there were some stares from other customers, we had no complaints. Our food was spectacular and we look forward to returning to try the rest of the menu. We celebrated our 5th anniversary at Lillian's while staying at the beautiful Inn, and it made for a memorable evening. We started with the warm crab and avocado, which was excellent and a great way to begin the meal. Our server made a genuine effort to communicate with us using his iPhone, sharing additional options not listed on the menu--something we truly appreciated. For the main course, she ordered the breaded veal, and I had the scallops. The veal was just okay; the breading overwhelmed much of the meat, although it remained moist enough to be enjoyable. The scallops, however, were outstanding--perfectly prepared, and a reminder that not many restaurants get scallops quite right. For dessert, we had sorbet, which was the only egg-free option available. Overall, it was a good dining experience, though there is room for improvement. read more

Veal Milanese was perfectly done and dressed with arugula and lemon. Husband loves the spaghetti lobster with the decadent cream sauce. Chocolate cake was unnecessary, but delicious. I do wish they did something special for if you're celebrating a special occasion. They didn't do anything. Also, it was hard for us to find the real parking (valet). They were friendly, professional, and seated us immediately. They were also so kind about taking photos for our group. Our server was nice but we felt service was a bit slow at times and had to ask several times to get a refill on our drinks. The food was all fresh and tasty. Let's talk food: I ordered the prime filet and it tasted great! The meat was very tender and had a really nice crust on it. It tasted buttery and went well with the sauces. My dining partner went with the striped bass, and I have to admit I had some serious entrée envy. The fish paired very well with the beans. They have hospitality on lockdown! Visiting near by for a little weekend getaway with my fiancee. Heard good things about Lilian's so decided to make a reservation. Got seated right away. Service and good and food was good but a few complaints that ruined the experience for us. First off, it was SO dark in the main dining area. The lighting needed to be about 5-10% brighter. We could see our shadows on the menu. Main complaint was there was a larger party that was waiting for their tables to be ready. We were just getting our drinks as they were getting seated. They were obnoxious. They were treating the main dining area as if it was a private room they rented out. Standing around other tables making people uncomfortable, taking loud (almost screaming, they were obviously already wasted), and climbing over the furniture. Other guests were clearly irritated as well. To make matters worse, there were multiple instances where the manager walked by and clearly could have said something, but chose not to. I understand that that party will probably make the restaurants night as far as profit, but there are other guests who are spending money as well and it should be a relaxing and enjoyable experience for them too. I don't know if they do this for everybody, but they could clearly sense we were irritated and brought us "chef made" chocolate chip cookies after I paid. Ice cold. read more

I wouldn't say I'm a regular at Lilian's but because its so close to home it was one of my favorite easy date night spots with my husband. The first time we went it was great! We sat by the fireplace, service was good, the food was great! We have been five or six more times and I feel like every time we go it somehow gets worse. They have been weird with us asking to move tables before which I sometimes ask to do because they keep it FREEZING inside and I don't like to sit right under a vent. They have very reluctantly moved us before, but I don't see why they're so weird about it. Today I asked to move tables so we could look outside. It was a beautiful evening and we were the only people in the restaurant so I didn't think it would be a big deal. The hostess told me no because they were saving the other tables for other reservations. No problem. I can understand that. EXCEPT 2.5 hours later, only a single other table came and they didn't sit at the other table I asked for. We stayed until 40 minutes before the restaurant closed and no one ever came for the table. It wouldn't have been a big deal to move us and I didn't like that the hostess just lied to our faces. And for what?? The table we asked for was less than a foot away from the original table they sat us at. Food was decent, but the whole time I was just waiting for the reservation to come in and no one ever did so it just made me irritated that the hostess couldn't be bothered to move us. read more

What an adorable spot! This restaurant is located in downtown Rancho Santa Fe and is a must-visit for anyone who loves experiencing a tasty brunch in a beautiful setting. I'm excited to go back and try their dinner next. My girlfriend and I arrived for our Sunday brunch reservation at noon and found parking along the street in front of the restaurant. The patio dining is set right beside the entrance, which is accessed by a short staircase leading into the restaurant. The front entrance overlooks a lovely courtyard, adding to the charm before you even step inside. When we arrived, there was quite a wait. Luckily, we had a reservation and were seated fairly quickly. Not all restaurants offer brunch reservations, so I appreciated that they do. Food 5/5 Crab Benedict was so good. The salad it comes with was lemony and delicious too. Smashed potatoes were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfection. Brioche French toast was light and fluffy. I loved the lemon curd and berries on top. Beverages 5/5 Mimosa was refreshing and well-balanced. Bloody Mary was enjoyed by my friend. Something that also can't be missed is the restaurant's decor. It sets a lovely, inviting tone. We dined outside with a view of the courtyard and I had a great overall experience. The only small issue was that the staff forgot my coffee order, and we didn't realize until after we left. A small mishap, but nothing that takes away from the experience. Well, I haven't been back here except once since the remodel and change of ownership. I was here over a year ago and I was not happy. But I decided to try again and I was pleasantly surprised. They were having a birthday party in the bar so I dined outside where I wanted fresh air anyway. They changed all the roses and replace them with lavender bushes. The cocktails had a nice variety. I definitely do not recommend the breaded veal. But the scallops were literally the best I've ever had in my entire life! No metallic brine flavor after taste! My server made everything flow so easily. Really a great place when you just want to relax. I'd still remember the wild salmon carpaccio from a year and a half ago that was absolutely fantastic and completely changed my opinion of wild salmon. Dined at Lilian's for my birthday dinner and while I really wanted to love it, the experience fell short of my expectations. The filet mignon was a good quality steak and cooked well but it was under seasoned and lacking flavor. While I enjoyed the sampler of sauces, a good steak shouldn't need to get its flavor from sauces. The potato puree was creamy and smooth but again under salted. The side dishes are all for sharing size which makes it a little awkward to order for 1 person because my husband was having the pasta and didn't necessarily want mashed potatoes with that. Even though the waiter asked about allergies and I said I was gluten free, the birthday dessert that was brought out for me was a dish I wasn't even able to eat. The giant firework candle was super cool but I'd rather not have received a dessert than have something I wish I could eat but can't placed in front of me. I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant! I made a reservation for 12 and we were seated in a beautiful corner that gave us plenty of space from the other tables. The service was phenomenal, very attentive...our glasses were never empty. The food was delicious and they managed to serve everyone's dishes at the same time which we appreciated very much. I would definitely come back to this restaurant, it is perfectly romantic for a date night, gorgeous, and relaxing for a night out with friends, and spacious enough inside for large groups. There's indoor and outdoor seating, a bar with some seating if you're waiting for your table and outside of the restaurant but still indoors are some beautiful seating areas as well. They offered valet parking, there is some street parking and there was also a lower lot if you're willing to walk a little bit. I parked in the lower lot and it was a very beautiful and peaceful walk through the gorgeous property to the restaurant. The only thing that I would advise NOT to order was the dessert, Lilian's Wonderland. It was very pretty, a work of art, but it was not very enjoyable as a dessert. The banana split was fantastic and I wish I would've ordered the churro beignets instead, I'll get those next time! read more

While our waitress was attentive, we had a serious nut allergy at the table and she did not demonstrate a clear understanding of the menu. When i told our waitress, Vivian H., about the allergy and made it very clear, she paused and was only able to identify two items that contained nuts, the lamb and the Brussel sprouts. Within minutes of reviewing the menu myself, I found another item that very obviously contained nuts that she failed to mention, the scallops. That is not a small oversight, it could literally kill my 2 year old niece even with an epi pen onsite, and anyone with proper training takes that kind of allergy very seriously which I felt she did not. I was uncomfortable enough that I had to watch her physically note the life threatening nut allergy on the ticket to feel even somewhat at ease, but still had to thoroughly inspect our dishes because I was so worried she just didn't know what she was talking about. That immediately made the night more uncomfortable than it had to be. Then the food arrived. I ordered the veal, which was overcooked and overpriced. It had the texture and flavor of a chicken tender, which is not something you expect from a dish like that. It was disappointing to the point of being insulting to the baby cow; both in presentation and preparation. My fiance had the roasted chicken, which he felt did not meet the description, it felt rushed and lacked the descriptive seasoning or roasting as on the menu, rather something just put into the oven. They rather abruptly lowered the lighting, to the point where it was very noticeable. We had a deaf member in our party, and when they lowered the lights the 2nd time I couldn't see what she was signing, and I was sitting right across from her. Not that we need bright lighting, I appreciate ambiance, however the lighting felt more to that of a night club than that of a dinner, and not being able to speak via sign language from across the table is just silly and honestly kind of rude. The drinks were excellent. I had a vodka substituted French 75, it was made to perfection. Unfortunately, that was the only redeeming part of the experience. read more

We asked our beautiful hostess with gorgeous curls and a smile that would melt any heart to provide us shade on the patio and she took extra measure to do so...such a start. Our food was amazing, we could kiss the chef. We shared our plates. Hamachi Crudo, Duck Tostadas and Lamb Chops. The flavor, seasoning and cook on the meat was to perfection. We had a lovely Pinot Grigio from Italy. It was a perfect 73 degree day. Just enough room for dessert and espresso. Our server was wonderful. Had an occasion very recently to dine at Lilian's to celebrate a memorable occasion. What a great spot to do so surrounded by a very lovely garden and a very upscale environment. The restaurant is located at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe and was supported by a very friendly team of folks. Seated outside in the patio area, there was a nice view of the grounds and while it being a cool evening, there were appropriately spaced heaters to keep the guests cozy. The service was fine in that they folks were friendly, but it was noticeably delayed through the course of the evening. In advance of dinner, the table enjoyed two appetizers consisting of the Salmon served carpaccio style and the Peking Duck Tostadas. Starting with the Duck Tostadas, they were very flavorful with an added spice that some might find on the spicy side, but very reasonable. Great moisture and just the right amount to enjoy for more a table. I would order this again. As for the Salmon, it was very evident that fish was at the table from the aroma which was a bit strong. It was topped with a sauce, but this would not be something that I would order again given the texture and strong aroma . . . if you know what I mean. For the entree, I went with the NY Steak which had a very colorful topping that appeared to be along the lines of a chimichurri. Don't be confused, it had a completely different flavor profile which was very mild. While the beef was cooked perfectly, it was a bit on the cool side and could have used a bit of salt and pepper. Overall, the beef was good quality with near nothing left on the plate at the conclusion of the dinner. Overall, the atmosphere and a few of the dishes made this a destination that I was glad to have visited. Very friendly staff, but the service was not quite at the level that I would have expected for a restaurant at such an admired location. Finished plates remained at the table for an extended period of time and water glasses were filled primarily upon request. This rating and the others who have reviewed Lilian's are very fair. Friends adore the hotel as they have stayed on a few occasions, but I am not ready to recommend this restaurant at this point. Good, but not great in my opinion. read more

We enjoyed dining on the patio, overlooking the major intersection in the village of Rancho Santa Fe and the lawns in front of the Inn. We looked at dining inside, but it was a bit dark. And more formal. The menu continues to improve. We enjoyed a lamb chop appetizer ($28), then the 8-ounce fillet ($62). With French fries, $15. Corkage was $35. The wine list does have a good selection of reasonably priced to high-priced wines. The bill comes with an interesting historical preservation fee of 2% in our case, it was $2.80.
