All the other entrees looked amazing. We then ordered the Hula Pie & peanut butter toffee torte. Hula pie was absolute!ly delicious (MIL never orders/eats dessert) and she devoured both!! Literally cannot say too many good things about this pie!! Macadamia nut ice cream, about a foot high & smothered in hot fudge! Cmon!!! The torte was okay but the crème brûlée banana that came with it was also wonderful!!! Colton was our server and was on top of everything Warm, funny, knew when to come check on us, not a botherer at all! But in everyone we met, they were nice, welcoming & professional. This seafood is a winner when you are looking for ambience and a good view. The restaurant is overlooking the ocean. We went on a really cool and windy day so we were not able to enjoy the beach. Jake's Del Mar was our family's favorite meal while visiting the San Diego area! The ambience was stunning, especially around sunset with the beach right in front of us. We started with the ceviche and calamari, and both were really fresh and yummy. For my main meal, I went with the lemon garlic roasted fish, and it was delicious! We went to Jake's since it's a sister restaurant to Dukes which we love! When we stepped inside the ambience is a little different (to Dukes) wasn't a huge fan of it but I loved the windows that opened straight to the outside! We ordered the fish tacos which pretty good just had them substitute the chips & salsa that come with it with some fries. We also ordered the poke bowl which we also like just needed a little Sriracha sauce to spice things up a little. My wife ordered a Mai Tai which she thought wasn't all that great & ordered a blended spicy mango slushy which had potential but I felt like it was blended with very little ice (sometimes it just depends on who makes your drinks I guess). Went to Jake's twice in one week -- once to celebrate our daughter earning straight A's in college, and again for a business meeting. Both visits were wonderful experiences! Jake's is such a beautiful place to enjoy a meal. While the serving sizes aren't huge, the food is absolutely delicious and thoughtfully prepared. I discovered my new favorite lunch item: the steak wedge. I'm not a fan of blue cheese, so I ordered it with a side of ranch and vinaigrette instead, and wow -- it was amazing! I also ordered a virgin piña colada, even though it wasn't on the menu, and it was fantastic. I chose this place for lunch because of its location. It's so hard to find restaurants that are truly right on the sand, so that's definitely a huge bonus here. And if you can get a table in the dining room along the beach, even better. Definitely worth the wait. We started lunch with two mai tais, and they were absolutely fabulous -- classic all the way. The food, however, is where the restaurant didn't really shine. They seemed to play it safe. If you prefer lighter, more understated flavors, this may be the perfect place for you. We started with the ceviche. The guacamole had turned color and didn't seem very fresh, but overall it was still a light and decent starter. For my entrée, I ordered what was essentially a cioppino, even though they call it something else on the menu. The mussels tasted slightly off, though the two pieces of fish were tender and nicely cooked. Unfortunately, the dish really lacked flavor, and I ended up having to salt it heavily. Our waitress was wonderful -- very sweet, attentive, and diligent throughout the meal. Overall, this is a great spot for the atmosphere, drinks, and staff. I needed some lunch so came in here after 3pm, and it was closer to happy hour. As soon as you walk in, you just see the ocean and it just calms you. I sat down at the bar and it wasnt too busy but with a few people. This place is for grown ups, so act like one. It had a laid back, ocean vibe so very relaxed for sure. Bartender very professional, and very courteous. Poured me a blonde to get started and gave me time to chose my food. There is happy hour here but not too many selections. Today, it was choices of some of flatbreads and a salad and I wasnt interested. Happy hour only Mon - Wed anyways. I wasnt terribly hungry so ordered the ceviche. I love fish, doesn't matter how you make it, as long as its good, I will like it. Ceviche was spot on fresh and yummy and appreciate a bit of avocado added. It was the perfect snack, while watching the ocean view and washing it all down with an ice cold blonde. A perfect gown up way to spend the afternoon celebrating life and how gorgeous Mother Nature is. There is valet parking here which is $8 and peak times $10. I was able to find free 2 hour parking on the street though. Bathroom was clean and everything about this place would bring me back in again. Now for the negatives: The restaurant was dark and dingy inside and smelled of alcohol--not what you would expect for a pricy establishment. Basically it was an overpriced dive bar. My tuna was beautiful but flavorless so that was disappointing. It was so loud inside it was hard to hear even the person sitting right next to you. Service was relatively good, however the parking attendants were rude. I was with someone who is disabled and required extra time to enter the vehicle and they literally said we were holding up the works and needed to exit immediately. Although this has been a Del Mar cornerstone; this was my first time. We arrived just before opening and there was already a line, on a weekday! It's old world charm inside and we were sat at the huge, gorgeous windows that provided epic views and ocean breezes. The service is impeccable! We were four women who hadn't seen each other in 48 years (!) and Chase L understood his mission - we weren't in a hurry. Great spot for a birthday dinner!!! Let's start with dessert first... a hula pie. The pie was on the house for the birthday and man we ate that pie. The fudge was thicc and melted in your mouth with the hazelnut ice cream. I think it was an Oreo type crust of some sort??? Idk it was great. This was the best dinner we have had in a long time. Service was super attentive and the food was spot on. We started the meal with the Brussels sprouts and calamari. The calamari was so light and crisp but the slightly spicy chili sauce was the star. Best calamari I've ever had! For dinner, we had the scallops and ahi tuna. The ahi was seasoned to perfection and the sides were also great, but the best dish of the night was the scallops. They were perfectly seared and silky on the inside. Disappointing 30th Anniversary Experience My wife and I came to Jake's on July 18th to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. We made a reservation and arrived 30 minutes early hoping to grab a drink and relax at the bar. Unfortunately, the night got off to a rough start. The valet lot was completely jammed and backing up into the street, forcing us to search six blocks before having to pay $60 for a private lot across the street. The host staff at the door were fantastic--friendly and professional--and gave us a lovely anniversary card. But from there, the service fell apart. At the bar, after asking the bartender for a recommendation, he turned away mid-conversation and ended up serving three groups who walked up after us. Once seated at our table (no ocean view, which was a bit of a bummer for a special occasion), we waited another 15 minutes before our server ever greeted us or asked if we wanted starters. When the food arrived, the steak was cooked well and the flavor was good, but the sides--the mashed potatoes, green beans, and shrimp--were lukewarm at best. The biggest issue throughout the night was basic attentiveness. Empty water and drink glasses sat on our table while we had to flag down other staff members for refills. By the time our server came back to offer another drink menu, we were already done eating. After waiting 20 minutes post-dinner just to get the check, we skipped dessert altogether and just wanted to head home. We've had far better, more attentive service at a local Denny's. For a high-end restaurant on a milestone occasion, the overall experience was pretty "meh." We won't be returning. read more

We have been to Jake's several times for brunch, but not for dinner. With as much coastline as SD County has, there aren't a lot of good restaurants on the beach - especially that are at a decent price point - but Jake's is in such a nice spot! The traffic around there can be a nightmare, so plan to go a little earlier than you think you should. They do offer valet parking for a fee, which we have used some of the times we went. Once you get in though, the views are very nice. I suggest making reservations, especially if you want a closer seat to the windows. Overall I think the food there is always pretty good, and the brunch prices are reasonable. The service can be hit or miss, but most times it's been good. Jake's is a great place to take those out of town visitors who want to take in all the ocean views. Hopefully we will make it for dinner one of these days! read more

The restaurant has a nice ambiance, and service is usually friendly. Last time, I had the mixed seafood pot which was decent but a bit bland and nothing special. Just in terms of scenery, Jake's here in Del Mar, CA is an utter winner. With waves breaking and surfers surfing a stones throw from you table, makes this Ex-Californian very happy to be back. This beach town enclave is "Surf City"! Jake's has a fun playful menu. A couple of friends visiting from San Francisco took me there for a fantastic seafood diner with a view to celebrate my birthday (is past two weeks but always open to be celebrated ). The restaurant is stunning, clean, views to the ocean from every corner, cozy and classy. Our a server was a young lady with long hair very attentive and fast service. We ordered a bunch of things to share and our only disappointment was the salad with cucumber, watermelon and blueberries. What we thought was going to be an exotic salad looked more like a non cohesive blend. We did not like it to start with because we expected the watermelon and cucumber to be very cold and also fresh (the color of the cucumber was not attractive, like was seating at the kitchen for a while). Maybe that salad should be offered as dessert instead. My favorite were the shishito peppers with brussel sprouts as well as the fish with black mole sauce. We were seated quickly with our reservation. Our waiter was great! He knew the menu thoroughly. Where do I start? This is the spot if you're looking for a good time chilling at the bar, or bring your date out for a romantic dinner around sunset! And if that is the plan, get there a little early and ask for a window seat. One other disclaimer, Valet parking here is less expensive at $10, versus public parking across the street for $26 for 2 hours. I don't come here often, but when I do I always look forward to it and I enjoy bringing out-of-towners here. That said, my most recent experience, which included two of my cousins from the East Coast where there was just a huge snowstorm, could have been better and I was torn between giving it 3 stars or 4 stars. I made a reservation for three through Open Table and confirmed it with a phone call to the restaurant. I'd requested a table by the window, if possible, and was told that those tables are first-come, first-served and cannot be reserved. I was also told that because my reservation was for 11:30am, which is when the restaurant opens, getting a table by the window should not be a problem. When my party arrived, there were just two parties of 2 or 3 people each ahead of us. We followed the hostess/server to the window seating, and while the other two parties were were being seated in the center area of the window where the view is most gorgeous, our person led us to the table all the way to the side where part of the view is obstructed. I asked for a table in the middle, near where the other parties were being set up, and the employee said, "They have reservations." I told her I have a reservation too. I also told her that the tables are supposed to be first-come, first-served. She set us up where we wanted to sit, but I didn't enjoy going through that. One cousin ordered the Ahi Poke Bowl, requested a couple of substitutions, and really enjoyed what she had. My other cousin ordered the veggie burger version of the Chef's Burger and really enjoyed what he had. I ordered the Caprese Sandwich and did not enjoy it. The wild arugula was in pieces too big to eat, the burrata cheese was runny, and every bite was a mess. I anticipated the tomato would be ripe and sliced. What I got in both halves of the sandwich was the top part of a big hard tomato and it was partially green. It looked like what you get when you slice off the top of a thick bell pepper and cut out the center where the seeds are. It was so hard, it was inedible. I'm glad that my cousins really enjoyed their meals, loved the view, and felt this was a wonderful place to come. I'd come here again, and now I know what not to order. read more

We got seated outside which was nice but unfortunately we didn't have a view of the ocean. However, there is a walkway from the restaurant directly on to the beach. The service was great throughout our whole meal. Food wise, delicious! We started with the ceviche which was so tasty. I ordered the Scallops and my wife ordered the Surfing Steak. Everything tasted fantastic! Even the kids meals were good sizes. It is a little pricey but it's also directly on the beach. The inside was nice and had beautiful views. Had dinner here with coworkers at night. Was seated at a round table on an elevated platform where we were able to see the waves on the beach through the windows. Service was amazing! Food came out quickly and at the same time. Waiter recommended the scallops. 4 of us ordered this dish and we all loved it. We received a complimentary hula pie and a large pineapple slice decorated with an umbrella stick for the group. Was so good. A huge slice enough for all 6 of us to enjoy. We didn't have reservations but they were able to seat us right away. There is a parking lot across the restaurant, you must pay. Be sure to place your ticket on the dash of your car so you don't get ticketed. I purchased my ticket and did not place on my dash and still had to pay ticket :( I would recommend parking the restaurant's valet. It's $10 which was cheaper than the parking lot across the street or find side street metered parking. This is my 3rd time here, always a nice view. Restaurant is right on the beach. You can take a nice walk to the beach and burn some calories after your meal. We also paired our meal with a Santa Barbara white wine which was perfect with the scallops.
