    Saturday dinner

I like dining in the cozy village of Rancho Santa Fe. The Bistro at Rancho Santa Fe is located on Paseo Delicias, across the road from Mille Fleurs. Parking along the street is plentiful. The front patio at the Bistro possess tons of charm, with its abundant flowers, strings of lights, canaries in cages and old stone fountains. The service is provided by young women who are kind and efficient. The menu has something for everyone's taste. I can recommend the Dover Sole Meuniere and the steaks, In addition, perhaps in a nod to the owners' Persian heritage, the Beef Kebob over Basmati rice and vegetables was delicious. The wine list is small, but the prices are very fair. For dessert, my favorite Chocolate Mousse has been removed, sadly, from the menu. The after dinner espresso is beautifully-served in an old fashioned gold-accented little cup, but I wish the flavor of the coffee were deeper and richer.

The food was great , our server was very attentive, took care of us well, and of course the nice outdoor seating with nice people around . I think most of them were locals ..

We had the Brussels sprouts and baked Brie for appetizers. Both were delicious and I would order them again. For an entree we had the Chicken Parmesan specialty which was good but very rich. Splitting that was plenty of food. The Sea Bass special was enjoyed by others at the table but the skin was not crispy. The bottle shattered, and she immediately started crying loudly. The server's first reaction was, "I don't know what happened." Later, she explained that the tray was uneven, which caused the bottle to fall. We understand that accidents happen, and we were not upset about the accident itself. What truly disappointed us was the restaurant's response. Other than a brief apology from the server, no manager or staff member came over to check on our daughter, ask if she was injured, or offer any assistance. Seeing a young child crying after being hit by a shattered glass bottle should have prompted someone to show at least a little concern. It has now been two days, and she still has a visible bruise from the incident. We weren't looking for free food or compensation. We simply expected empathy, professionalism, and genuine care after an accident involving a child. Unfortunately, we left feeling that our family's well-being was not treated as a priority. I hope the restaurant will improve how it responds when situations like this happen in the future.

To me, the food was 3.5 to 4 stars. I ordered the thai and basil soda mocktail which was super refreshing and not too sweet! The spicy tuna and crispy rice was really good! I ordered the harvest bowl ($26) and added 3 oz. of steak for an additional $15. I didn't think that was a good value for roasted veggies and a small portion of steak. Some of the steak was extremely chewy as well. My friend said the hot honey chicken sandwich was good but there was a lot going on. I did take a bite of the molten butter cake while it was hot and fresh (I ordered it to-go) and the caramel really elevated the cake. Five stars for ambiance and service. The vibe here was smart casual. I did enjoy the aesthetic. Service was A+ with Emily. The manager came over a couple of times to make sure we were comfortable which was super sweet! I would definitely return. I really want to visit for brunch one of these days!

Valet parking is complimentary, and there isn't any self-parking. When I checked in with the hostess, she gave me the option of sitting in the front outdoor patio or the back patio. I chose the back, and I'm so glad I did because the view is absolutely beautiful. I also had my dog with me, and they were incredibly dog friendly. They brought her a dog bed and a surprisingly extensive dog menu with some really great options. We ordered: *Lobster Tacos : Three generously filled tacos served with salsa and guacamole. They were absolutely delicious and loaded with lobster, topped with fresh avocado. *Rancho Burger: Easily one of the best burgers I've had. It was cooked perfectly, and we added Swiss cheese. They even cut it in half for my friend and me to share. The fries were fantastic too, crispy and somewhere between steak fries and thin-cut fries. *Shepherd's Pie (Dog Menu) : The menu listed it with beef, but they accidentally brought out the chicken version. Since my dog is allergic to chicken, they immediately apologized, took it back, and made a fresh beef version. The customer service was excellent, and my dog absolutely devoured it. The portion was generous, and it looked fresh enough for a human to eat. The service was phenomenal from start to finish. Our food arrived in less than 20 minutes, the views were stunning, and the menu had so many tempting options that I'll definitely be back to try more. Their food quality is also very good. Of the several times we've been, we've struggled with food temperature not being warm enough about half the time. Servers are kind, but can be inconsistent. Again I would say half of our visits we've felt forgotten. My biggest irritation was during our latest visit, in which families with children were seated next to us not once, but twice. This was disturbing because on the booth side of the table where my mom and I sat, we felt the movement of squirmy children from the table next to us. Highly recommend more attention to table selection by the host staff. Given the classiness of this place, I find it silly that I'd have to go out of my way to ask for hot food and to be seated only around adults. We will be taking The Pony Room out of our rotation for a while.

We left feeling underwhelmed by both dinner and breakfast. Given the restaurant's reputation and…read morehigher-end pricing, we arrived expecting a memorable dining experience, but across both meals we found the food and service fell well short of expectations. -- Dinner We started with the Roasted Tomato Soup, which tasted very similar to a canned grocery store soup - perfectly edible, but lacking the freshness and depth we expected. The Spicy Rigatoni Alla Vodka was certainly spicy, but beyond the heat it was surprisingly bland and short on flavor. Dessert - the Samoa Sundae, along with the complimentary cookies (which were a nice touch) - was the standout of the evening and genuinely excellent. We regularly dine at Michelin-starred and other fine dining restaurants, so we're more than happy to pay premium prices when the quality warrants it. Here, however, the value simply wasn't there. Charging around $40 for a basic pasta dish and $15 for simple sides like fries sets a reasonably high bar, and unfortunately the food didn't live up to those expectations. Service was friendly and attentive overall, although there were a few noticeable missteps, including dishes being served to the wrong guests and water being poured while we were in the middle of settling the bill. -- Breakfast Breakfast the following morning reinforced our overall impression. Coffee was served from an automated bean-to-cup machine rather than being freshly prepared, which felt out of place for a restaurant at this price point. We also weren't offered sugar with our coffee and had to wait until we could flag someone down. We noticed the café just a few meters away was preparing barista-made coffee and matcha drinks, but when we asked, our server wouldn't offer them from the restaurant. We then overheard her telling another table that they would need to walk over to the café to order them separately, and that these premium drinks weren't included in the complimentary hotel breakfast. The food itself was equally disappointing. The eggs were overcooked - hard, rubbery, and lacking much flavor. The deconstructed salmon bagel was an odd choice. At $28, we expected a thoughtfully composed dish, not one that required us to assemble it ourselves. It felt more like an unnecessary gimmick than an elevated presentation. The pancakes were fine, albeit slightly raw in the middle. My father is vegan and, after noticing that the only breakfast entrée suitable for his diet was the Avocado Toast, I emailed the hotel in advance to ask whether any additional options could be prepared during our three-night stay, so he wouldn't have to eat the same dish every morning. Two days later, I received a reply that essentially reiterated what was already on the menu and said my comments would be passed along to the restaurant team. Unfortunately, I never received any further communication from the restaurant team, and his dietary requirements were not acknowledged in any way during breakfast. For a hotel and restaurant positioned at this level, that was particularly disappointing. Service also slipped at the end of the meal. Once we had finished eating, our server disappeared entirely. After waiting for some time, we eventually had to go inside the restaurant to find someone so we could ask for the check, only for that employee to then head to the back to locate our server. -- Overall, both meals were adequate, but neither came close to justifying the restaurant's reputation or pricing. During our three-night stay at the hotel, we chose to dine elsewhere after our first dinner and breakfast, and left feeling that there are far better dining options available.
