Flat out terrible experience. When I came in there was a group of people in front of me. There was a clear language barrier and the man taking their order was being absolutely disrespectful. All three of the staff I saw working up front or delivering food, were very rude and continuously talked badly about other customers pretty loudly. As for the food, it was nothing special. Made a delivery order for 5pm Christmas Eve for family members that has a sick child and were unable to join us for Christmas. The online site said they were open and they accepted the order. At 5:15 I received a text saying the order was cancelled so it was already too late to order from somewhere else. When I called to voice my frustration I essentially got a "sorry, I'll tell my regional manager" and that was it. I was assured I wouldn't be charged. Then my bank statement comes and I've been charged. Call again "sorry, we'll refund you and I'll tell my regional manager." At what point do you try to recover the guest when sorry isn't cutting it??Clearly there are several other places in Lawrence to take my business. read more

Disclosure: I am from Louisiana so I am partial to McAlister's. What's the connection, you might ask? McAlister's is owned by Deuce McAlister who played football for the New Orleans Saints. Leaning slightly in favor before I even walked into the place. Who DAT?? I have dined here many times and I have enjoyed my dining experiences very much. The sandwiches are top rate and loaded. You won't leave here hungry, that's for sure. The staff does not seem to mind special requests, either. No eye rolling or low keyed groaning if I make one of my "on the side" requests. Everything is prepared well and very tasty. My favorite has to be the salads. I am a salad junkie. I love a pile of green, purple, yellow munchy stuff. McAlister's does not disappoint, either. Big, fluffy, yummy salads. I have worked my way through most of them and I have liked them all. I am partial to the chicken Caesar salad. Generous portions, fresh ingredients... life is so good. The baked potatoes have escaped my plate, so far. I have every intention of digging into those soon. I usually get so filled up on salad and sandwich there is little room for a baked potato. My friends have raved about them, though. The restaurant is clean, well lit and sparkly. The staff is super friendly and even acknowledged me by name when I went to pick up my online order. It made me feel very special. While I was waiting, they chatted with me and shared their personal favorites. Since my last review, I am pleased to report that I was contacted by the restaurant and encouraged to dine again with them. So we did. Customer service was vastly improved. Eye contact was plentiful and a warm friendly tone marked the conversation (I'm sure behind the masks there may have been a smile or two). The food was also improved although it wasn't excellent, it was very good. The meat portions were more than generous but the corned beef lacked that unique corned beef flavor. This was my first time ever attending this restaurant, and I had high hopes. However, from the second I stepped in, I was disappointed by the incredibly rude staff member working the cash register. She "welcomed" us with a flat hello. She then worked on getting delivery orders taken cared of, then aggressively threw a bag right in front of us. She never smiled or asked how our day was. The food was great, but I was more than disappointed by that interaction. I understand someone having a bad day, but given the numerous other reviews regarding bad customer service, perhaps this is something to look into carefully. read more

It should have been delivered by Trey M. of DoorDash, but I learned from McAlister's Deli that it was delivered to someone else and the restaurant didn't want to reimburse me (the woman who picked up the phone from their end was also very unhelpful). I absolutely love McAlister's! I don't love the location as I live on the opposite end of town, but I do love the food! McAlister's is a great stop for a quick lunch or dinner. They've got a variety of sandwiches, soups and "spuds." I really like to get the pick two deal -- you can choose between half a sandwich, half a salad, half spud and a cup of soup. I like each sandwich that I've tried but the Sweet Chipotle Chicken is a top pick. Portion sizes are great if not a little on the large side. Last time I went, I was slightly disappointed in the customer service and they were out of my favorite thing --- spuds!! read more

I've been to McAlister's Deli several times now. The menu is very diverse, and offers many delicious types of loaded bake potatoes, a variety of fresh soups each day, hot panini's, gourmet sandwiches, and salads. Along with entres there are side dishes like potato salad, the excellent mac-n-cheese, side of fruit, mashed potatos and gravy, chips or applesauce. Also there are cookies, brownies and a seasonal cheesecake option for dessert. Now i really like mcalisters, its college-student affordable, and you get a lot of food! It is easily compared to a ''Panera's'', some people think panera's has more to offer because of the danish and bagels, but base off the menu they are pretty similar. I do like Panera's soup in a bread bowl better, because the Sourdough bread McAlister's deli uses, just doesn't do it for me. Lawrence has a dearth of local delis; yes, we have a ton of Jimmy Johns, Subways, and other sandwich places, but since the Cheese Shop shut down, my life has been sadly lacking in delicious fillings between two slices of bread (discounting the excellent grilled cheeses made by my honey). I was skeptical when I first ventured into McAlister's, as I assumed it would be another Jason's (not that there is anything wrong with Jason's, I am just looking for a Cheese Shop replacement). Although I did not find my Cheese Shop successor, I am a fan of the various and flavorful sandwiches and soups that are available. I have tried several different variations, and have been pleased with them all. I think the sandwiches and soups are better tasting (and have better nutritional value) then Jason's, so this is my new go-to for soup and salad on-the-go. Although I have not tried them, the entree salads and potatoes are very large, and have been reported as delicious. You order at the counter and then your food is delivered; the service is very quick, so it is ideal for a quick lunch or dinner. The open space of the dining room, and logistics of food ordering, make this a very casual place. On thing that I really like is that all server tips are donated to a charity that changes monthly; even with this factor, the service on drink refills is very good and you can always get the attention of a server if you need something. read more

More varied than your average sandwich place, they offer chili, soup, baked potatoes, and all kinds of solid food. Completely customizable, they've got a good selected of "pre-built" meals, but they'll make you most anything you want. As others have mentioned, they tend to be a bit healthier on their sides and such, but if you want to pig out on chili nachos and a side of doritos, well, we're not gonna stop you. Evidently, they have excellent tea, but as I'm not much of a tea guy all I can say is it looks sufficiently brown. One minor complaint, I wish they had more booths. I get the whole bar-height tables and chairs thing, yeah that's cool and all, but sometimes I just want to sit in a nice comfy booth. Every time I've gone all 6 booths are taken, while the cool looking bar-height tables are always vacant. Their patio is quite nice though, and is shaded and cooled with ceiling fans. Excellent for a sunny summer day. Not quite a fine dining experience, but good to eat better than fast-food at not much more expensive than fast food prices. read more

My Mcallister club had meat on one half of the triple decker, and just lettuce, tomato, and copious amounts of sickeningly sweet honey mustard on other half. They still have the retarded 2' long metal rods on the table to hold your order number that I hate though. Have to dodge the stupid thing whole time you're trying to eat. The 1/2 soup and panini lunch is great. The veggie chili is hearty and the chicken pesto panini is filling. Another favorite sandwich is the french dill. With not overflowing with beef, this sandwich is still hearty enough to make a meal and the au jus is pretty tasty. I like that they now offer healthy combo options with calorie counts. With outdoor seating and quick service, McAllisters is a good choice for a light lunch. Their baked potatoes are also huge. I think they are one of the best deals on the menu. Top it with some chili or broccoli, and you've got a filling meal. I'd stay away from the salads though. I've been disappointed by their meager size. read more

I first went to a McAlister's in Manhattan, Kansas. And my favorite sandwich there was the meatloaf sandwich. It was, unfortunately, no longer on the menu when I went to this Lawrence location. Sad. Instead, I ordered the Club Wrap -- a big portion and flavorful. Also ordered pasta salad, which tasted surprisingly like those of us in my Italian family would make. I ordered it to go, and there was a separate line for doing that, which made my experience fast to order. The waiting time, though, was almost 10 minutes -- quite a long time for a wrap and pasta salad. Food tasted great, though, and I wasn't in a hurry. read more

Liking this place more and more. The taco salad is always good. It's better if served in a tortilla bowl. Sometimes they short the chili a bit. Little requests to fix this usually do the trick. Normally I love McAlisters, I come here often with my cousin and we study. But for the first time, I had an awful experience. The person who took our order was rude and looked like she hated her job and everybody in general. We were in McAlisters for over four hours, and only one person came by our table to ask how everything was. We went up to get our own refills when normally they are pleasant and constantly asking to clear your table or refill your drink. The manager was even present and completely ignored it when the rude woman working was disrespectful to an elderly man and looked beyond annoyed when he came back to ask for a number because she never gave him one. Okay let me be clear, the food is good. No complaints there. The problem i found was with the staff. I overheard a conversation in the back while i was at the counter. It seems like a pretty new employee was trying to talk to 2 other female employees, both blonde girls about college aged, and they openly and loudly disrespected her and excluded her from the conversation. Im a former manager and trainer in food service and i know that the success and quality of a restraunt starts with a staff that wants to be there. It's obvious to me that this girl was excluded and how is that supposed to make her want to be there. Mcalisters has a good thing going, but they need to focus on creating a culture of inclusion if they want an effective and efficient staff. read more

I placed an online order half an hour before scheduled curbside pickup time at 6:15 p.m. this evening. I pulled up at 6:15 and called to let them know I was there. The person who answered was rather rude and told me that they ran out of spuds and were in the process of "flash cooking" (I assume this means microwave) one, it would be 5-10 minutes and they'd have it out. I waited. And waited. Finally, 20 minutes later, I went inside. I asked if it was ready, saying that I'd been sitting outside waiting for 20 minutes, and the front counter girl said in a snotty tone "well did you call us to let us know you were here?". I said that I had, and then she seemed to notice a bag sitting on the counter. She asked my name and I told her, and she handed me the bag. I asked if it had just been sitting there the entire time. She said probably. I asked if everything would be cold then, and she said "no, it's fine, we just had to cook your spud". No apologies. I got home 5 minutes later, because I was already late, and only then checked my bag (my mistake). Not only were the sandwiches cold and soggy, but there was no au jus for the French dip, and no butter and sour cream for the spud, which was only cooked partially through. Terribly disappointed in this experience. I used to eat at the McAllister's in St. Joseph when I lived there, and it was amazing. This is my first time at the one in Lawrence. Will not be going back, not only for the food and waiting fiasco, but because the employees I encountered were rude and indifferent. read more
