Having been a victim of the banking blow up I was out of a job and decided with a little free time on my hands I'd head to NYC and work on my "art." In addition to consulting with banks I'm also a published fine art photographer and wanted to work with some well known commercial photographers. A friend got me set up with connections and even a place to live in Chelsea, just above the Meat Packing district. I lived on the corner of 19th and 8th street and had just about anything I needed within 1 block. One place was the Chelsea Food Mart (Not to be confused with the Chelsea Market on 9th) ....though the receipt says "Market" Google Maps says otherwise and their store front has "Mart". This place was my go to for food, ice cream, and beer...........all which usually occurred around midnight to 3am in the morning. I really did take advantage of the city that never sleeps by never stop eating or drinking *grin*. Seriously, in its little space...wedged in between "Rainbow and Triangles"...my friend told me when she lived there 10 years ago it was once a big gay section of town, but has sense gentrified way beyond the point of recognition with only a few little shops still in place. On the other side Lasagna Ristorante and inside the Chelsea Food Mart is a little of everything....a deli...beer and wine....groceries..fruits....veggies....breads....ice cream....cleaning supplies...and the list goes on and on. Folks were what I'd call "New York City" friendly....if it wasn't busy, they were pleasant...but when it was busy...you were better served by getting your stuff and getting out! So if you are roaming around this part of town...looking for something to drink/eat/or otherwise and want to save a buck or two...try this place...it'll be worth it.

This week I tried the strawberry shortcake and white meringue cake. The strawberry topper was a little old but the rest of the cake was moist and fresh. They really load it with a generous amount of whipped cream. I wish there was more cake and less filling. A minor issue though. Unfortunately, the older woman at the first register in the morning consistently comes across as though customers are inconveniencing her. She is often on her phone and appears bothered when assisting people. Usually, I let it go, but today's interaction was unnecessarily rude. When checking out, she asked how much the tangerines were. I told her they are normally 2 for $1. She went to verify the price, came back mumbling something, and when I politely asked her to repeat herself, she responded with an attitude, saying, "Yeah, you don't hear?" I calmly explained that I felt she was being disrespectful even though I had not said or done anything rude to her. She responded by saying, "Yeah, yeah, customers always think they're right." I even repeated myself in Spanish because I initially thought perhaps there was simply a language barrier and no disrespect was intended, but she continued arguing. Another employee who stated he works there said the supervisor would not arrive until after 10 a.m. It's unfortunate because the rest of the staff are pleasant, but one person's negative attitude can easily push loyal customers toward the many other stores in the area.
