'Eh, how many of you folks remember going to a crack seed store with a few bucks in your pocket, only to ask da crack seed man or lady, "Eh, how much seed can I get for a dollar?" Yes, growing up in da 808, I think all kids at one time or another, have experienced eating crack seed, arare, Icee frozen drinks, ice cake, almond cookies, tea cookies, chips, & candy! My fond memories of going to the crack seed store in Kaimuki (on Koko Head Ave)., just across the street from Liliuokalani Elementary School. One of my favorite things I like to eat was the Baby Cherry Seeds, and of course I had to get an Icee.........and I use to save the Icee stamps from the cup to get a free Icee when I filled up my card. A true crack seed store use to have the seeds in a large glass jar, and you have the crack seed man, or the crack seed lady scoop up the crack seed to weigh it, then they charge you accordingly. Well, times have changed.........and other crack seed stores have popped up. The new stores are much more modern looking, well lit and bright, cleaner looking, and although they still have the glass jars, it's mostly for nostalgia purposes as most cracked seeds stores now have their cracked seeds pre-packaged. Which leads me to Lin's Hawaiian Snacks............. Lin's Hawaiian Snacks has been around for quite sometime. I use to buy cracked seeds from Lin's all the time when I went to the Swap Meet, and years later, I found out they had an actual store at the Ala Moana Farmers Market, just across the street from the Ward Warehouse. When I found out they had an actual store, I really like that, as it was much closer to my home for me, and they sold the same exact cracked seeds that I would buy from the Swap Meet. As you know with the redevelopment of the Ward Warehouse & Ward Center area, businesses move or close due to the massive changes in the area, but lucky that Lin's Hawaiian Snacks has survived in this busy competitive world! Lin's Hawaiian Snacks is still in the Kakaako/Ward Center area, but they just moved down the street just next door to the Phuket Thai restaurant. Lin's Hawaiian Snacks is a pretty big store, where is sells drinks, cracked seeds, cookies, & other snacks.............too much to mention! They also have some cracked seeds in the large glass jars too! But most of their seeds are prepackaged, and ready to go. The nice thing about this store is they actually have some tables & chairs inside the store, so if you buy some treats, you can actually sit inside the cool air conditioned store & enjoy your snacks! NICE yeah???? How did I end up here? Well the other day I was having breakfast at Harry's Cafe, and while walking back to my car, I just so happen to pass by Lin's Hawaiian Snacks and I could hear Mr. Crack Seed calling me into the store, so I just popped in to pick up my favorite Baby Cherry Seeds, & some Almond Cookies! What can I say about the snacks? A little pricey for the stuff I bought.........but of course I am comparing it to the same stuff I would buy at the Swap Meet, where I would get more seeds, & cookies! I do understand they gotta pay rent, utilities, & employee salaries, so with the beautiful store, they have to charge a little more for their snacks. The quality of the snacks is still fresh, and of course, it's deeeeeeeeeeeeelicious!!!! I don't know about you folks, but whenever I look a certain crack seed, as soon as I pick it up & look at it, my mouf starts getting all watery & juicy! That's how you can tell that ya dig dat treat!!!! Ummmmmmmmmm! There is parking available in a private lot, but it's not free, as you have to observe the stall number you parked in, then pay at the kiosk. 1/2021 Great place to get your seed and sweet tooth fix. Lin's snacks has a wide variety that will satisfy you. With covid, all the safety measures in place; only 5 people allowed at a time. It kinda sucks if there is a line but that's the new norm. I waited about 5 minutes which wasn't too bad. Once in gotta know what you want. There is so much to choose from that you need to have a game plan. My game plan consists of li hing ginger and li hing peach. That bubble drink was a wild card. Came to this cute store full of Hawaiian snacks. All kinds of different variety of flavors and selection to choose from. I give this place a 3/5 because, I was really expecting the flavors of my snacks to be the same as other places that I usually buy. I got taro sticks & banana chips. I usually buy taro sticks from Whole Foods, combine with the veggie chips they sell by pound. It was really hard & no flavor to my surprised. I wish I didn't grab it. The banana chips are kinda flavored but not as sweet and crunchy as other brand stores. Parking is street parking & walking distance from TJ Maxx and other stores around it. It's a little corner spot, that you enter through the main entrance. They have another door on the other side but it's blocked. So make sure your opening the right door :-) read more

Have you ever seen the sparkle in a local person's eye when they go to a seed store and see all the big glass jars lined up? One of the highlights of my Mother's Day yesterday was handing my Mom a Lin's Hawaiian Snacks gift card, and asking her if she wanted to go down to pick out some goodies. She was ready to go! Dad came along for the ride, and he had fun looking around, too. There are oodles and oodles of old school seed lined up in the jars along the windows of Lin's, and the friendly staff will offer a sample from the jar if you're not sure what you want, but for your convenience, almost everything there is also in pre-packaged bags, ready to grab & go. But it's not just a seed store!! Lin's has all kinds of snacks! Nuts, spam musubi, Chinatown favorites like almond cookies & mac nut and sesame chew candies, sugary treats like gummi bears and all kinds of other gummies, coconut balls...even regular candy and Pez! That's just the packaged goodies. There are also bubble drinks, Taiwanese style snow ice, shave ice, iced tea and more being made to order at the counter. Since there's such a huge variety of merchandise and also since after school, kids congregate at Lin's for snacks, sometimes there can be a line, but it's worth it! Just a note: all kids love treats...even low income ones. Please have a little patience when Lin's has to run an EBT transaction. Yesterday I learned that they cannot do them online so have to manually write out each one. Smile, relax and just know your purchases will be worth the wait. Finally, Lin's also has a tent (or maybe more than one--I can't keep track!) at the Aloha Swap Meet. In addition to most of the packaged goods that you find at the Kamakee location, they offer cut up fruit, li hing pineapple, pears and even whole pineapple. I don't go to the swap meet often, but I usually stop at the Lin's tent for some refreshing fruit to snack on. Lin's is one of my 'go-to' places to take visiting friends, especially if they used to live in Hawaii and have a craving for sweet-salty snacks. Ok, I admit, mostly because I have a craving! To the left, a wall of sugary candies, gummy bears and the like. Then, to the right, chocolate treats. Beyond that, you're hit by the impressive rows of huge glass jars filled with crack seed creations and aisles of packaged treats. Ok, mouth is watering now and it's almost painful! To the back wall, your gaze falls on the glistening packages of crunchy, salty arare (rice cracker) snacks. Full drool forces you to wipe the back of your hand against your lips! Then, the fun begins as you walk down the aisles to look closely at the treats, packaged in 4 oz, 8 oz, one pound increments ...dried li-hing mui, sweet sour wet seed, whole seed, creamy cherry seed, chocolate mochi crunch, wasabi peas, coconut strips, li-hing mango, li-hing strawberry, banana chips, sakura arare, norimaki, and on and on. There's also dried cuttlefish and other creepy crawly dried sea creatures for the adventurous appetite! Savvily, Lin's offers $1 samples by the check-out register, so you don't have to commit to more than 'taste" -- great if you're on a budget and also for calorie counting! You'll also find boiled peanuts, energy bars and ginger chews. I was in the middle of Honolulu just casually admiring my surroundings and catching Pokemon when I stumbled upon Lin's Hawaiian Snacks. Its big, bright window displays of omiyage caught my attention and I knew I had to come inside for just a peak. This little shop is filled with so many treasures to take home to your friends and family. They have an entire section of ume soaked in different flavors, dried fruits and nuts, big bags of flavored shrimp chips, and a mini water station to help quench your thirst as you're likely parched from the humidity outside. Your eyes will have a feast roaming the specialty items inside so don't come in too hungry. The staff were very pleasant and really informed too on what you could and couldn't bring back to the mainland. I wanted to be sure that my Juicy Ume with Oolong Tea did not get confiscated at border control. Even though I'm back on the mainland now, they're still sending me coupons on discounts on snack items that I wish I could buy! I'll have to swing by again the next time i'm in Hawai'i. read more

Perfect treat for hot days and to give into that sweet tooth. Their shave ices are a good deal, and you can add the toppings to it too! Each additional topping costs $0.75. Be careful it can add up, I added so much extra toppings I paid an additional $4 to my smoothie which was around $4 to begin with. I am a sucker for their mango smoothie. I came here a few times, and always picked up a mango smoothie with mango popping pearls and add in a bunch of other toppings. The mango shaved ice is a good deal, and I shared it with two of my other friends. We enjoyed the ice cream on top, and real fruit mango on the size, with condensed milk drizzled on top. I recommend this because it's sweet, but not overwhelmingly sweet. They also have a stamp card system! If you know you're coming back, be sure to pick one up. They have little packages of crack seeds, local snacks, and candy that costs a dollar each. They even have selections for sale by the pound in the big jars! Their selections make good gifts as well. They sometimes have special gift baskets and bundles. Parking though..... There's street parking but there's also paid parking. Not sure how strict they are but I usually can find street parking. Pricing is pretty decent as well, depending on different items. If you're not in the mood to buy a regular size, you can always opt out for their dollar candy wall which has a pretty big selection of different candies like gummy ropes, rock candy, and more. It's about a one serving size. Not in the mood for candy? They also sell fresh fruits as well once in a while. In the past I've seen pineapple, papaya, and more. They even have Li hing pineapple in the back fridge. I really enjoy their made to go counter. There are two free parking stalls in the adjacent lot, otherwise, paid parking @ $1/hr, which can be refunded if you take the ticket into the shop. Unless there is someone with you, you run the risk of getting towed. But then again, I didn't see tow trucks standing by. Pay station takes bills and credit cards. I do not know if it gives change. There are two four-top tables inside and some tables outside to enjoy your bubble drink, smoothie, shave ice or teas and snacks I purchased two pounds of licorice plum, 1/4 lb of sweet whole seed and a passion fruit iced tea. Got my pog stamped for my drink. I grew up buying seed from the glass jars the crackseed stores used and still purchase seeds this way today, even though the shop sells pre-packaged items. Haven't been here in person...yet (I can dream of a Hawaiian vacay, right?). However, I've ordered crack seed numerous times from this company and they don't disappoint! Aside from the basic li hing mei (red is the classic and my favorite - I guess it's nostalgia?), the lemon peel gummy bears, lychee gummies, and li hing mei gummy bears are amazing! My husband did not grow up with this and is a VERY picky eater and even he is a convert! Docked 1 star since one of my orders was missing a pouch (this was during the pandemic tho). Otherwise, everything is so fresh and just a different quality than what you get at a standard Asian market. There are 2, 15 min reserved parking for Lin's Hawaiian snacks and other parkings is $2. The store is small that serves a huge variety of candy, nuts, other snacks, shaved ice and boba! On top of what my brother wanted i grabbed pineapple rings, lychee belts, and a ton more that looked and were delicious. I also tried the winter melon milk tea with boba which was an average tasting bubble tea... but for the price it was well worth it, compared to other boba shops I've been too. Candy heaven! This is a great place to come if you have a sweet tooth or if you are craving some sugar! Lin's is known for their local treats and flavorful Hawaiian snacks. I didn't know that they have shave ice and milk tea as well. My husband told me about it so we stopped in. Hubby ordered the shave ice with ice cream, I ordered a jasmine milk tea with lychee jelly. It had a nice taste but there was way too much lychee jelly inside for my liking. Hubby loved his shaved ice, I tasted some and it was too sweet for me but I liked the vanilla ice cream. I also picked up some of their lemon peel gummy bears and their li hi mui flavored gummies. I wasn't a fan of the actual gummy bears they were sweeter than my usual gummy bears you can tell they were made artificially and had high fructose corn syrup. I favored the lemon peel gummies. The li hi mui flavored ones I liked as well it added a nice sour taste to them but still not my fave. I would like to try some of their other candies next time. When your best friend is the owner of one of the best milk tea places on Oahu...you eventually become extremely picky about where you go to get milk tea....because yes you become spoiled... So in town I can say there are very VERY few places I would go to enjoy a milk tea. Lin's Hawaiian Snacks however is one of the few places I love to stop by. Located right in ward area on kamakee st. It's not exactly hidden but also not in a high traffic area. Just a few minute walk from my job a few blocks down, I don't mind venturing all the way here just to enjoy their wintermelon milk tea. Their wintermelon is delicious and not watered down like other places and it's perfectly refreshing. Today I was lucky enough to enjoy a free drink on them thanks to my filled out stamp card I received from them :) probably one of the few places that still do stamp cards since a lot of places are going mobile or online with the star app. Not only do I enjoy their milk tea but they also serve delicious shave ice which my five year old daughter looves! And they just have so many yummy flavors and options to choose from! And do I really need to explain about all the local snacks they offer here?!! There's always something yummy to find here. You really can't go wrong with the local favorites. The staff are all very sweet and friendly. They have a nice indoor and outdoor seating area but with the horrible muggy weather outside....inside is quite nice! Not to mention they play some really awesome jams to listen to! When I was a little kid, back maybe 15 years ago there was a store like this that closed down. Except they didn't nearly have as many options of snacks as them. They have everything from dried fruits to nuts to dried seafood to candy. This was like my childhood replaying again. When I went inside I went to look for my lihing guava, my favorite thing. After a looking through all the options, I found it. But I wasn't done, I wanted more, hell if I had enough money I'd buy everything. So I kept shopping and got some crispy shredded mango, grilled Himeco, and licorice olive strips. I left happy. I will be back knowing this is one of the few places that sells my dried guava bits. Apparently Li Hing Mui is the "Tajin" of Hawaii (Tajin is the Cali thing that we sprinkle on everything), and this store offers a whole bunch of that. There's Li hing gummies, fruits, dried fruits, seafood...all sorts of stuff! I love that they have a little sample section where you can buy a bunch of $1 baggies (I definitely took advantage of that) and they also serve drinks and shaved ice on the side. To be honest, we have a lot of li hing mui things where I live (SGV in California), so I wasn't super impressed, but the variety, organization, and cleanliness of the store is definitely commendable. I haven't gone here in the longest time since they moved here from Ala Moana. Since i got the chance to go just the other day, i really did shop in here like a little kid in the candy store. Anyways, the first thing i immediately went for was the li hing mui strawberry belts. My boyfriend also got them along w/the strawberry puffs w/li hing mui. The next thing that i went straight for was their picked mango. I love this pickled mango so much that it had my mouth watering. The last thing i got was a drink. i was looking at their drink menu & i was deciding what i really wanted. then i saw pictures of drinks above the candies that were in the small baggies. one of the workers asked if i had a question about anything then i mentioned about the picture of one of the drinks. one of the drinks was a strawberry smoothie w/ice cream inside. the second drink was called a lava flow. once the worker said "lava flow" i went & ordered it. it was seriously delicious & i will definitely go back for another one! read more

The melon snow is so good! The tables were kind of sticky but it was nice to have seating to enjoy my snack. The spicy olives aren't actually spicy -- more like li hing olives with a light dusting of cayenne pepper powder. The dried garlic pieces are delicious to dip with sauces, but are so garlicky that I can't eat many at a time (probably a good thing). And the furikake mix was so freaking buttery and delicious!!! Lin's is like a hybrid of a crack seed store with your favorite snacks with the friendly vibe of your local hang out. I love being able to stop into this oasis without getting hounded by someone who things they're going to catch me with my hand in their cookie jar. Located just a block away from the theaters, there's a much bigger range of snacks here than at the Ward concession. If only I knew a way to get into the theater with my bubble tea without getting caught ... oh right, if you don't put the straw in, then the drink won't run the risk of spilling. Duh! Every possible option of snack is available here - shaved ice, bubble drinks, kumquat tea, coconut juice with pulp, li hing everything, kumquat tea, almond cookies, green apple sours, kumquat tea, and kumquat tea. Friday's have become a "treat day" for my children and instead of popcorn or Jamba Juice we decided to grab a shave ice at Lin's. There's nothing better than greeting a hot afternoon with shave ice and today was a weird windy scorcher. We ordered a large shave ice for $3 and my children argued over what flavor we were going to get. My daughter wanted rainbow, my son wanted orange and grape, my baby wanted shave ice (because she could really care less what flavor and is perhaps the wisest of us all). As the one who had the money to pay for our treat, I made the executive decision of choosing strawberry, mango and root beer. As in real life, money rules in the magical shave ice realm as well. I refereed my children's consumption of our large shave ice as they battled with straws and spoons. If there's one thing that having lots of siblings teaches you, it's that you need to eat as quickly as humanly possible or you will be SOL. I've decided that next time I'll buy some extra cups because it was completely chaotic. Before leaving I decided to grab a $3 bag of boiled peanuts to eat on the way home. It was pretty bad in that the peanuts were way over cooked and were very mushy. I ended up throwing them away when I got home. Other than my peanut incident we had a good shave ice experience and will most likely return again purely because of convenience. They also have bubble teas and tons of local snacks, and I'm sure this is going to become a quick stop on hot days. read more
