Found this gem on a weekend visit to Stony Brook a couple weeks ago as I desperately needed a manicure. The salon was convenient to get to since it is right off the university's campus. Staffs were extremely accommodating and friendly. I was brought to a manicure station and seated right when I walked in. I got a gel manicure and I was so pleased with the assortment of colors they had. The lady who worked on my nails took her time to make sure every nail was painted evenly. Overall, the service was exceptional. The prices were reasonable (you get what you pay for). The salon itself was really clean and neat. I would definitely come back for another visit! read more

I requested French manicure and it was so quickly and tastefully done, with all the extras like hot stones, massage, etc. Also, the price was sooo reasonable that I tipped 50 percent because really, these ladies deserve it! I went for waxing and the lady missed so much hair and started arguing with me about hair I could so clearly see that I asked her to wax and she wouldn't do it. She charged me for bikini wax when I never got bikini done and it was just the portion of my inner thigh. I have never had my underarm wax hurt more then when the people here do it. These people don't know what they're doing and overcharge and have the nerve to ask for tip. read more

When I started going here I got nail fungus, which means that they don't clean their tools. Super disappointed. They also don't cut your cuticles which makes the manicure last barely 2 weeks. I went for a gel manicure and regular pedicure yesterday. I made an appointment for 3:30, and wasn't seated until 4 pm. The salon was going for quantity over quality. My gel was sloppily done and it was all over my skin which required the tech to file and pick some of it off. The tech also began filing my nails after the gel was done. This completely defeats the purpose of the seal the gel creates and is going to shorten the lifespan of the manicure. I asked her to please stop filing it several times, which she refused. Ultimately the manager got involved and I had to have a few fingers redone. I've been going to yumis for years, but will be finding a new nail salon now read more

I enjoy getting my gel manicures done here because Yumi's has a wide variety of colors and it's also nearby my school. They take their time and make sure you are content with the outcome. Personally, I never had problems with any of their services and never felt rushed. Their staff is friendly and I usually never have to wait long. The spa is also spacious, clean (they sterilize their equipment), and relaxing. You can also join their membership to rack up points in order to get free services. Definitely one of the better places I've visited so far. I went in to have my gel removed and get another gel manicure which totaled to $27 not including tip. The lady was quick paced and listened to my requests despite it being slightly picky. The manicurist took her time with my nails despite the busy hours and I'm surprised at how nice my nails turned out. Trust me when I say that I can get very picky with my nails. I love that they wrap all of their tools so I feel like everything is clean. They're really fast and efficient. It only took 30 minutes for a gel manicure and it costs $22, which is pretty cheap for other prices around Stony Brook, and the gel lasts pretty long. Very clean salon - sterilized tools, disposable filers and buffers, and wrapped pedicure spa tubs for each customer. There's a great selection of regular polish and gel polish. The owners are constantly adding more to their collection (most I've ever seen), so there's a good chance they carry the color you want. Had a gel manicure in anticipation for my 2 week vacation to Hawaii and Thailand -- the gel lasted for 3 weeks, even with all the beaching, snorkeling and swimming I did. I had a horrible experience at this nail Salon I brought in a gift card that I got for Christmas and I used it once and they did not care that I used it then when I went to get my nails done again for the second time I used my gift that I got from their nail place again and when I asked one of the staff members to use they told the manger that I had 20 left on my card so the manger put it through then yelled at her staff member and embarrassed him in front of me and the other staff members. then the Manger came up to me and yelled at me because I used my gift card then she slammed the gift card in front of me and her staff member because the cover of the gift card had a old picture on it. I walked in Monday morning to get a bunch of gift cards for manicures and pedicures as graduation gifts for my mom, girlfriend and sister. The salon was full of students, getting ready for commencement I assume. It was pretty busy, but someone was able to help me get what I needed. I believe her name was Linda. She was super friendly and made my complicated transaction easy. Unlike some of the nearby salons I've been to, the gift cards came with a nice holder. I've been coming here for over a year and I've never been disappointed. Yumis is clean and hygienic. They use covers on their pedi tubs and sanitize all the utensils. I rarely have every waited for a walk in appointment, and I'm always pleased with the massage during my pedicure or 10/20 min massage, as well as the way my nails look when I leave. I usually get a spa pedicure. Sometimes I get manicures but I have also had gel and uv gel French manicures here over the last year. My nails always look great when I leave- no matter what I choose to have done- and stay looking great for an acceptable amount of time. My pedicure lasts up to a month, although I usually come in every 2-3 weeks for a pedicure as I stand on my feet at work for 10-12 hours a day and love the massage! Horrible. Went in there to take off my acrylic set and the male nail technician was super rough and clipping the nails everywhere even hitting the woman customer sitting next to me. Decided to get a regular mani to somehow bring back to life my post acrylic natural nails. Never have I ever had such a horrible manicure. No lotion, no small hand massage; in fact he left me with the remnants from the old acrylic set (powder and glue) all over my hands. He barely did one coat of white polish - and asked me if it was okay and I said no as it barely covered my nails. He did another coat and brought me to the dryer and left me there! Did not check in or anything and took another customer, as I was leaving he proceeded to stare at me for a tip which I gave sheerly out of respect because in no way was I content. read more

While visiting my brother at stony, I saw this salon that was near campus & I had to get mani-pedi. When I first went in, the place was very clean and the workers were friendly. There were many different colors to choose from! Usually, I get annoyed when they rush through it but the lady was very careful and took her time. When she saw there was a bump, she knew to fix it while usually others would wait till I said something to do it. I am very satisfied with my mani-pedi. You can also join their membership and earn points in the future to get a free service which was cool because not many places in the city I know have this. I would def. come back when I am in the area again. But I do definitely recommend this place for those around. read more

I've been here a few times to prepare for events at SBU. Actually I came to this salon accidentally after mixing it up with the other Yumi's Nails on Nesconset Highway. The first Yumi's I went to was the Nesconset Highway one and I got a regular manicure done. That happened about 3 years back. I ended up liking this one more, so I have since been coming to this Yumi's Nails. (I think this one was changed to Lin's Yumi Nails a year back) As a student, I noticed that the prices were a little to high for me, so I only went when I wanted to treat myself. Just recently, I think they started having a 20% student discount, so that really helps. I haven't had a bad experience there yet. All my services are quick and painless. I have gotten waxes, gel color, pedicures, and normal manicures. I can't judge the other services they provide, but I can say that I have never had a problem with the services I have had done. I have friend who would get gel color nails with me and her nails remained undamaged after she removes the polish. The same cannot be said of my weak nails, so every time I removed my gel color, I would get a normal manicure. Also, I would like to point out that the salon has a strange but fun spa pedicure called the jelly spa pedicure (I believe). They would put something into the water and the water would become like jelly. It was a really fun experience, so anyone new to spas might want to try it. I have had my share of average technicians and wonderful ones. These are some of the wonderful girls who have helped me: Linda, May, and Windy. I would definitely go to Linda for any nail designs. My experiences with the other technicians aren't that great in terms of asking for a design. Windy understands English and she does a great job. May does a meticulous job, and she would be the best for massages. (I only know this because they give complimentary massages at the drying station when the salon isn't busy. I've never actually paid for a massage.) What I also like about this location is that it looks clean. They use a new set of emery boards and buffs for every customer, they have individually packaged cuticle cutters and other instruments, and they cover the pedicure tubs. Came here for a gel manicure one weekend on a visit to Stony Brook. The staffs greeted me right when I walked in and helped me get seated as soon as I could. There was a wide range of colors that I got to choose from. I had the manicure for a little more than two weeks so far and they are still fully on with no chips. I am amazed at how long lasting these gel nails are! The lady that worked on my nails made sure every nail was done carefully with detail. First and definitely my last time there. Went to get my gel manicure removed and they were going to file the whole thing down to my bare nails with an electric file before I stopped them. They did two fingers with the electric file and I can feel that those two nails are paper thin right now. Literally the worst nail salon I've ever been to in my entire life. I had never walked out in a pedicure before this experience. From the moment I walked in to the moment I got up and left it was a nightmare. Shoving the menu in my face while talking to someone else, then having to repeat about 100times that no I don't want mani pedi I just want pedi. Very agressive and pushy. Technician not even looking at what she was doing the whole time filing my toe instead of my nail talking To the manager. Manager was yelling and screaming for my whole time in the pedicure chair it was so loud I couldn't hear myself think. She was telling some sort of story just pacing around screaming. Then 15min into my horrible pedicure? The screaming lady comes over and says "I'm sorry she forgot she has an appointment I'll get someone else to finish your pedicure" I told her that wouldn't be necessary as I wasn't happy I had a headache now because of this and I was leaving, she physically would push me back in the chair every time I tried getting up! Begging me not to leave that she would be quiet and she'd give me "discount" I was so upset that she put her hands on me, I got up and stormed out. I've been disappointed here too many times to keep going back and can finally say I'm done with this place. I went to go get a mani/pedi before going on vacation. The male technician I had seemed to speak English pretty well until I had to tell him I wasn't happy. He asked me if I wanted a design and showed me samples they had displayed. They showed a really cute flamingo design so I thought sure, it'll be fun. As soon as I saw him studying it I knew I was in trouble. First of all he did it in white, so I was like "do you don't have the pink like on the sample?" He looked at me like I was nuts and just kept going. The thing came out looking like a deformed swan (see pic) and when I tried to tell him it didn't look like the display he didn't even say anything, just looked at me and took me to the dryer. There was no manager around I could talk to and by this point I had already paid. Like don't offer me something when you clearly can't do it. When I got home I also noticed he painted like over my cuticles, so a day later they began chipping all around the edges on both my toes and finger nails. He also filed my nails and toenails so short-my toes actually started to hurt! They also have no paper towels placed down on the manicure tables and don't wipe them down between customers. I could feel the dust of someone else's filed nails as I put my hands down - so skeevy. On another occasion I got gel done here and my nails were destroyed for months! They sanded down my nail to a pulp before polishing and when I went back to get it taken off they used an electric file! Stay away! read more

I asked for Acrylic nails with gel polish the first time I went in. I went back for a fill and was told it cost $35 because what I had was a gel set except a real gel set isn't made from powder and I just watched you take out a powder and liquid and give me an Acrylic fill. Applying a gel top coat to my fake nails is not giving me REAL gel nails!! This place is a SCAM and only care to take your money. Very unprofessional staff. They suck at waxing- if I wanted to do it myself I wouldn't pay $8 to go home & fix them. They cut your cuticles such that the skin above the nail peels off. The owner/manager marches around the room screaming at her workers with her hands on her hips. The workers talk to each other, talk over you and scream at each other too.
