Stopped in on a whim for ice cream and was pleasantly surprised. This is the oldest still running and continuously in business soda fountain in Michigan. I love that it's mostly original. They even us the old cash register. Ice cream was good and service was friendly. We didn't get a meal, but it looked great. Only thing I could knock them on was while the service was awesome, they are understaffed. There's just too many people with tourist season here. Parking was an issue for the same reasons and while I don't mind too much going to the atm, it's 2024 and cash and check only businesses can be frustrating. We'll be back for a meal, and it's worth a stop if you're close. read more

My family and I went there last weekend and it was the best experience I've had in a while granted last time I was there I was five years old, but the lady behind the counter was so gracious and so kind. I would definitely recommend people to come and enjoy the place for its nostalgia andhistory granted we just popped in for the soda fountain And all this had different types of ice cream sodas I would definitely recommend this place in fact if it was a five star establishment I would give it five star just for that. We did not choose the lunch since the kitchen was closed and we came in right before closing time which they close around four, which is a good time. Since this place is a cash only establishment because they use an old-time cash register system bring cash, but that did not discourage us in the least. Very friendly staff and customers. Sat at the counter with my daughter and her friend. Very traditional ice cream menu... not a ton of options, but just enough for a perfect after-school sweet treat. The sundaes were great! Though I saw someone order with chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla after the fact... I'll try that next time! :) My daughter ordered blue moon hard serve ice cream from their menu, but they were out. They subbed Superman, which I'm told is nothing like birthday cake, lol. Love the old soda shop feel, definitely take you back. The incorporation of the old pharmacy into the menu and decor is also cool! Not sure about anything other than their REAL malts. It's getting harder to find real old fashioned soda fountains. I can't remember the young ladies name behind the counter but her service and attention was highly unusual these days. She didn't miss a thing taking care of us. The only downside was they only accept cash or checks. No credit cards. There is a tavern next door that has an ATM. Probably could have a little better notification regarding credit cards. I have been coming here since the 70s. My family has had a house in the area for more than 120 years. It's a family tradition to get chocolate malts/shakes at the soda fountain counter. Today we went as a family (again) and brought two of the newest young family members. All of us came in and sat at the counter and ordered our shakes/malts. Three generations all there, sitting where we have sat for years. Every time, the chocolate malt tastes the same, bringing back decades of memories. You may wonder then, why only four stars? Well, because the other memory that unfortunately continues to the present day is how unfriendly the employees are. When I was a kid, I was a little scared. If they could get out of earshot of your parents, they'd make some low-voiced comment letting you know you were only being tolerated. As an adult, I'm just mildly irritated. The comments are still there, but now they let you know how inconvenient it is for them to wait on you, from the oldest running the cash register down to the teenager scooping the ice cream. They were always going to do something that you have now interrupted. But I continue to come in, sit down with every parent, grandparent, sibling, cousin, etc that is available to come along, and order my chocolate malt, because the attitude is part of the memories, too. If you are in the picturesque little town of Montague,MI this is is the place to go for lunch and make sure to save room for some ice cream, or a chocolate malt so big you will need two people to finish it ! The sandwiches were so so great, and inventive we had to come back the next day to try something else. But once you make it past the old wood floors that are in desperate need of refinishing, and the overwhelming odor of sauerkraut, you will be pleasantly surprised. My wife had soup and salad, and I had a sandwich. All were cooked to perfection. The service was attentive, and fast. The best part is that we walked out only $15 poorer, but full. As I understand it, the fate of Lipka's Soda Fountain may be up to the fates, so I write this review in the hopes that it is not too late to generate some noise in favor of this true White Lake area fixture. I was deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Mr. Lipka, who was always a friendly man, good to his customers and a heck of a guy. He will be missed. I think every fond memory I have of Montague stems from Lipka's: their sodas are, I can tell you, REAL sodas - sweet, flavorful, with a massive selection of flavors which can just as easily be made into mouth-watering malts or shakes! Combined with its authentic, one-of-a-kind early Americana architecture and wide selections of candies and collectibles, entering Lipka's is truly like stepping back in time. Head to the back and have a seat if you're hungry; the menu is on the wall on a big chalkboard. They cater to a loyal group of locals so there are mainstays (like grilled cheese, with or without turkey or ham, chili, prescription salad) on the menu with a few seasonal and fresh sandwiches, soups, and pies thrown into the mix. The prescription salad is amazing and it's a great size to split with someone if you wanna try one of the daily soups too. They might have blue cheese dressing on hand in the back. What a great and fun experience! We went in to check out the soda shop and have lunch. It was old-fashioned there was no air conditioning and it was a little warm that day but they have fans going. We had a group of 10 people and the restaurant was almost full but we only had to wait about 10 or 15 minutes till some tables cleared off we can push them together to accommodate our party. Our waitress was Kathy and she was wonderful. She was running around and taking care of everyone and was doing a good job. It was basic fare; sandwiches salads and soups and let me tell you each and every one of them were delicious. We did not order the entire menu but a good portion of it. They were able to accommodate our peanut and egg allergies and the food was delicious. The wonderful lady that owned the place was cooking and it was clearly a labor of love for her. Cute as a button with great prices. I think the over 65 clientele has been keeping this a secret because that was the majority of who was there - and I loved it! The waitresses were super nice and even though the older woman at the table next to me said they were slow, I didn't find that it was at all. Had the best malts ever here. The owner had great stories to tell. And I was so surprised to see her show up at our marina with my jacket as I had left it on the chair. Lipka's was a real pharmacy once, but now is just a well preserved old fashioned soda fountain(cira 1940). In the back is a wonderful sandwich shop. This place is like Mayberry only better. Kids come in for sodas, adults come in for food and the mix is sweet old small town America. read more
