OMG- If this place was near me, I'd have it for breakfast, snack, and dessert very very often. Had to stop by this place for something sweet after my meal at the Bird. It's a very small spot with a few tables and counter-style window seating. The menu housed many delicious variations of the waffle but I was curious about the churro waffle (churoffle) is . I got it with organic honey milk ice cream and a caramel drizzle. One bite of the warm, buttermilky, cinnamon sugary, chewy waffle and I literally said "mmm" loud enough for the few patrons that were there to steal quick curious glances my way. How could I care? This was one of the best waffle desserts I've had and was not about to take any judgment. I enjoyed every bite. The ice cream paired perfectly with it. Some tips- 1) park in the garage across the street from The Bird, the first hour is free 2) go during off hours to avoid a long line and nowhere to sit and eat. Bon apetit! read more

Belgian Waffles are so good. Like such a hidden gem of desserts and these are really great examples of them. I visited this spot a long time ago at a Yelp event and it has taken me a bit of time to return, but alas, I returned! I went with the waffle topped with chocolate ice cream, nutella and strawberries and it was totally worth the calories. And, on a Tuesday night, every seat was taken (the place isn't that big, tho). The waffle was freshly made and it was warm and doughy. Not big, not small, but a nice treat. Some people speak of splitting, but I honestly thing it's a little too small for two, but perfect for one. One minor critique: although the place is small and a two man shop, the place isn't the coziest since it was a bit dirty from previous patrons (I had to wipe off the counter myself) and there was 100% a weird smell in the air. For the price, this is a great sweat treat to satisfy those sweet teeth out there. read more

Whenever you walk by this shop, you WILL be hit with an overwhelming scent of warm waffles and dessert that smells absolutely heavenly. There's so many options when you're going here and they're all delicious (although I've only tried a number of them before). Service is really sweet and super quick. My favorite part of this shop is how they're open later, so if you're craving a late night treat, this is the perfect place! read more

After a fun date night, my friend checked her Yelp app for dessert place close to home. When she mentioned, Little Gem, I thought, "Salad?" I looked at the reviews and saw 4/5 star reviews written by my Yelp crew. So be it! It's a closet sized store with a half dozen metal stools and one table for two. A clean house, however a faint odor of diapers? I dunno! Lost star. You pick from a picture menu and order by the number. The counter staff was very courteous. My date rolled with a Nutella spread, Chocolate ice cream, and Strawberries. I had Carmel, Bananas, and Vanilla ice cream. Served in carry out containers, we ate them in about 5 minutes. Not a date night spot, but that Belgian waffle was the perfect dessert to end a lovely evening! read more

I invited Little Gem to cater at my company last week as a holiday treat for the staff and everyone LOVED it. Chong and has team got to our office early in the morning to setup and baked fresh waffles on demand. I had no idea that the waffles were made with fresh dough, so it was very fascinating to learn and even more delicious to eat! This was hands down the best waffle I've ever had. There were also a variety of toppings include fresh fruit, fresh cream, nutella--- you name it. I highly recommend inviting Little Gem to cater at your next event, and/or to visit their location in Berkeley. Chong is super helpful and made the entire process so easy. Little Gem has caught my eye on multiple occasions, but I finally had the chance to check them out. I stopped by when I was craving waffles one night around 9/10 PM and they were opened until midnight. Parking is street parking, but it was late night so there were plenty of parking along the curb in the front. Not much service, but my order came out pretty quickly. I opted for the Crown Jewel - it came with the house special cream and fresh strawberries, I added bananas and matcha cream as well. The waffle was not as fluffy and/or soft like I imagined - it tasted more crispy and hard. It was okay and one of those places where it is neat to check out at least once. read more

We hired Little Gem for a corporate event in Cupertino. From the very first inquiry I made, Chong was super responsive and accommodating. I knew they had good reviews, and figured people like waffles so it would be a fun treat for our group but WOW these waffles blew my mind! They are so so yummy. Chong did a great job suggesting the number of stations for a group our size and kept the lines short during service. 10/10 suggest hiring them for your next event! read more

This is hands down the best Belgium waffle place. There is usually a little bit of a wait as they do it right. They make the waffle and let it sit for a few minutes so it has time to crisp up so you get that crunchy, chewy, and sweet bite every single time. I usually opt for no toppings so I can taste the goodness on its own. If you ever went to Heavenly Ski Resort and had their Belgium waffle, this one is even better! read more

There were so many options to choose from! I ended up choosing 08. Jewel-Worthy which was $7.95+. I love the presentation of the waffle. Definitely a great spot to get desserts after a nice meal. Upon arrival, you order through a kiosk. I can't remember if there was any hand sanitizing station because that would be really convenient to have knowing that other customers will be ordering and touching the screen. read more

tldr; great little place for a quick dessert! My boyfriend and shared the #10, which is a Belgian waffle topped with strawberries, a Nutella dollop, and a scoop of your choice of ice cream. Having actually been to Belgium and eaten a legit Belgian waffle, I can say that while it doesn't quite compare (and I shouldn't compare but here I am), the waffle we enjoyed here was still very tasty and fresh! Well worth the money if you're looking for a quick dessert. There is very limited bar seating in the store, but you probably can't comfortably seat more than ten people seated at once in the whole place, so if you've got a big group, take it to go. read more

My goodness this waffle is easily one of my favorites!! I got the "Live Your Gem" which is a churroffle with Nutella and house cream. The combo of these ingredients were perfect! They absolutely nailed the texture of the waffle. It's crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. What stood out for me is that it has a slight gummy aspect to it too, like mochi! Huge fan! Ok....I'd like to start with "HOW THE HELL HAVE I NEVER NOTICED THIS PLACE?!?!" I'm so confused. Anyway. Boyfriend surprised me and my kiddo with this little sweet treat after lunch today. When I first walked in, I was a bit skeptical about the whole idea of it. I mean I got it but I just didn't think it was for me. HA! So wrong.... Let's fast forward to the toppings. I only start there because I want readers to know there are sweet and savory options to atop your waffle. Caramel, nuts, strawberries, Nutella, ice cream, bacon, cheese, sprinkles....and that's just what WE got. To begin, you get a PERFECT Belgium waffle. You can choose between a nice size 6" square or 4-2" mini waffles (approximately).We chose mini's. Perfect choice for us, it allows your toppings to be spread evenly and you get these nice small bites. The waffle was delicate. That's the only way to describe it. Lightly crispy outside, sweet, chewy inside. Omg literally one of the best waffles I've ever had in my life. Well done there! I got the April in Belgium - which has caramel, sliced almonds and ice cream. It was DELICIOUS!! I hate that I was so full from lunch because I didn't get to finish. But I'm definitely going back! This post is long overdue!!! Love getting cute little dessert waffles from here. It's a nicely run little mom-pop shop, owners are super sweet and always friendly. I really like the different flavors they offer here and the quality of the waffles are fresh! The location is also great and is a quick place to stop by after eating lunch/dinner in berkeley. Took a drive to Berkeley after dinner for dessert, and let me tell you this place did not disappoint. The waffle was perfectly made and the ice cream held up pretty well. The Nutella was nice and cold so it wasn't melting all over either. Strawberries were as fresh as can be. I want to try everything on the menu! I will definitely come back. They say marriages are tested when the honeymoon ends but lucky for me we went to belgium on our honeymoon and anytime I want to be transported back to that honeymoon glory I go to Little gems. Got two boxes of little bites delivered for Mother's Day (thanks to my sister) and lightly reheated them in the air fryer before eating. They're perfectly sweet and the right texture. The variety in flavors is great - I wish we were able to get the signature creations (with ice cream and or whipped cream) but those likely wouldn't survive the trip. Waffle bites are $3.50 each OR a dozen for $33. read more

I love love love this place, they have absolutely amazing waffles and they definitely still do right now!! Warm, sweet, crispy and fluffy with the perfect snack size, so it is absolutely amazing and I would highly highly recommend to everyone. Although right now the waiting area could get a little bit crowded during peak times and from the book store next door, if you stand a little bit far away, you should be able to maintain safety distance from your fellow waffle lovers! When you follow a fellow yelper and they post great reviews and pics, you end up ordering more food! I saw that they were doing free deliveries and had a Mother's Day delivery thing going on. I figured why not? Some for me and some for my mom! There was a little mishap with the ordering online, it wasn't clear where to enter details and so they missed my order for Saturday. I reached out to confirm, and they were nice enough to squeeze me in for Sunday delivery. It arrived around 6:30p so enough time for my parents to enjoy. I just tasted the lychee and strawberry, both were yummy, a tad bit sweet, but also fun that it's made using real fruits? I hope so! My husband thought it tasted like regular Costco belgian waffles with icing....WELL maybe it sorta did, but I WASS intrigued by the flavors. Nice little treat especially since they're located in Berkeley. You can tell they are a small business, so it's nice to support them when you can! Cute little Belgian waffle shop right by the UC Berkley campus. It took about 10 minutes for the order to be ready, and it was really good! The waffle was well made, and the speculoos and whipped cream were great toppings. I would definitely order this again. There are a couple of tables and counter seats inside, and also a couple of tables outside. They have ice cream in addition to different waffle combinations. I would definitely come back if in the area. Parking can be difficult in this area, but street parking spots are available. read more

The food was exceptional. My girlfriend and I created our own waffle and we were very much satisfied. The organic ice cream was tasty and the toppings we chose tasted fresh. Although you don't actually go into the establishment (you order at their entrance via a kiosk), the place seemed clean. This place doesn't just serve you regular waffles. The waffles are made out of a dough, instead of a batter, which is then pressed between the waffle iron. The result is a lightly sweetened waffle with a crisp exterior and a tender and chewy interior. There's so many toppings to choose from and they all go great with the waffle. I really like the smorefflicious which is a smoreffle (s'mores waffles) with ice cream. The smoreffle by itself is a wonderful treat. Gooey marshmallows and a nice sweet chocolate syrup all over the delicious waffle. But when you add ice cream, it gets even better. The contrast between the cold smooth ice cream and the warm chewy waffle is delicious. I really like the milk and honey ice cream because it isn't too sweet and has a great honey flavor. read more

Really liked this place! My boyfriend and I were visiting from out of town and stumbled upon this "little gem" whilst walking around Berkeley. We literally stopped in our tracks right as we passed it due to the sweet aroma wafting in the air from outside the shop. From the expansive menu that includes both "make your own" and pre-made creations, we chose the "Smoreffle" at the recommendation of the employee and it did not disappoint. Shop is cute and decorated with yellow accents. Wasn't busy at all so we had a place to sit, but I can imagine that it gets really crowded during peak times. Perhaps an outdoor seating area would help? Gave 4 stars because employees kept changing the music when my boyfriend and I started commenting on how much we liked it (I'm sure it didn't help that we were basically doing karaoke though...). I came back here to give the waffles another try! I got the April in Belgium with butterscotch pecan ice cream. Food: the butterscotch pecan ice cream was so thick and creamy and yummy goodness. The waffle was the perfect texture with the right amount of crunch. The only complaint again is the portion size for the price ($5.99) and not something I would get often but definitely as a treat! (9/10) Ambience: it's a very small shop located next to sliver down telegraph. It has one table and the other seating is by the window. This place is too small to hold a lot of people and would not recommend it for large gatherings. Service: the cashier was nice and he was the one making the waffles too. I got my order pretty quickly and overall happy with my experience. read more

Established in 2015, Little Gem Belgian Waffles is the original Liege Waffle specialty shop in the bay area. The owners were trained in Belgium and San Francisco Baking Institute, spent close to a year refining the recipe daily, and tested over 600+ versions of the waffle before opening! We handcraft our Liege waffles from scratch daily in small batches using only the finest most natural ingredients (some organic and none artificial) at our shop in Berkeley, CA. Liege waffles originated from Liege, Belgium. It's made from a yeast-rising brioche dough. They are crispy on the outside, fluffy and moist on the inside. The "secret ingredient" Belgian "pearl sugars" are baked into the waffle which caramelizes on the surface as well as create sweet pockets inside the waffle. The waffles have a unique, truly irresistible aroma! You've got to try it to experience it! :)

The food was always good, but the service was never particularly warm--polite, efficient, and impersonal, like a well-drilled operation. Today we took a twenty-minute ride with our six-week-old baby for one last visit before they close for good. We arrived before their advertised closing time, yet were coldly denied service. There was no one waiting behind us, but we were met with an inflexible, robotic "sorry, we're closed." No one was overtly rude, but the interaction felt rigid and mechanical, as if following procedure mattered more than acknowledging the people standing in front of them. It would not have taken much effort to accept one last order from a loyal couple with a newborn--especially since nobody else was waiting behind us. In the end, Standard Fare is closing exactly as it operated: precise, rigid, and lacking warmth. Hopefully the next business in this location will treat its customers with a bit more empathy.

The bakery itself seems to mainly be a takeout spot, with minimal indoor seating which felt pretty inconvenient given the limited space for customers, however it did seem to serve more of a purpose as a waiting area anyways. The structure of the bakery leaves a bit to be desired as well, as we found the glass display cases as the only form of menu, so being in the front of the line while still deciding what to order caused some unnecessary anxiety. Regardless of those nitpicks, the baked goods themselves were pretty good! Service was instant, and all of the treats looked delicious--it was hard to choose what we wanted! Our favorites were the Thai Tea and Ube Coconut Mochi Donuts. Both had really strong flavors--the Ube in particular was very clear in comparison to most other Ube desserts in my experience. The textures of the mochi donuts were really well done too, with soft exteriors and chewy, glutinous interiors. The same can be said about the Mochi Muffins, though with crunchier parts around the edges. We found the contrast of textures to actually work really well! However, the flavors of the Muffins were lacking a bit--the Red Velvet didn't stand out much, with the frosting tasting a bit too sweet, and while the Five Spice had a really interesting flavor, it was also a bit too sweet, drowning out the more unique citrusy flavor. Overall, however, all four of the goods we had were enjoyable eats, and would definitely return some time to try out other flavors!

The Sunday was busy and packed, we were first on the waiting list. The first available table for us was inside. Tables are spacious, made of wood, identical to the bench seating. The service was friendly, patient, attentive and thorough - reciting each order back to us to ensure accuracy. We were even asked if we had food allergies they should be aware of - incredibly thoughtful. Our coffee ($4) and hibiscus tea were refilled without ask, the wait for food was minimal. I ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes ($15) with a side of eggs. Classic 2 Eggs ($18) comes with two eggs your way, English muffin or sour dough toast with home fries, rice or tater tots. We each really enjoyed our meals and conversation. Would we return, most certainly. Parking can be a pain depending on the time. It is street parking on a fairly frequented street. The entrance is directly off the street and the eatery can be easily missed.

This comment concerned me because even if I come in towards the end of the day, if you choose to be open, please give me the same excellent service as if you just opened. Also, the bathroom was terrible and I did not like seeing it in the condition it was in. Someone should have cleaned it along the way so it didn't get this bad. There's a massive bookshelf filled with books (huge bonus points for including kids' storybooks too), which gives the space a warm, community feel. Coffee was great and service perfect. Even though there is a self serve coffee and water refill station staff continually came by to fill coffee and water and just check on me. They also have beer and wine and for the ladies....Momos!!!!! There is a parklet on Dwight as well as seating against the building. Next time I need to wait for my car or find myself hungry in Berkeley I'm coming here. And great music. Side note: Originally opened in 1979 and sold to Collin in 2011 who used to be a customer growing up in the area and actually worked here before owning it and still runs daily operations. So the story goes.

If Chicha San Chen would find a rental space here in my hometown instead of downtown Berkeley, it'll be splendid to find out if it's just as good as Heytea at Metreon.
