Friends and I have had numerous meals here and each one has been delightful. The mezze platter is to die for, as is the bread and butter--fabulous small loaves and European style butter--to start. Every pasta dish, and we have tried them all as there are six of us, has been perfectly prepared and sauced. The steak and the chicken dishes are always delicious and the discussion every time is "do I order what I got last time--it was SO good--or do I branch out?" The desserts are sublime, by the way. Little Goat How do you cap off a magical month of Mozart at Bard College at Annandale-on-Hudson? By heading to the charming Little Goat at 6380 Mill Street in Rhinebeck, NY! We have been meaning to try it since our neighbors raved about their Thanksgiving meal there last year. We entered and were immediately greeted by a basket of baguettes from Sparrowbush of Hudson at the counter. The browned crust reminded of us of our holy grail of bread from Balthazar that a guest had brought to our home 30 years ago. We've been unable to find a comparable baguette until we found one at the recently shuttered Fletcher & Lu's. We'd make monthly pilgrimages to stock up, and were saddened when our bread fix was no longer available. We snapped one up to test it out (had it for breakfast and it's glorious!) The interior is painted a warm butter yellow, the shelves house white ironstone pitchers, and baskets of wildflowers abound. Simple, but homey, yet at the same time elegant. The table settings are understated, and much like those I grew up with my grandmere from the southwest of France, who settled in the Napa Valley. My cousin Thérèse runs a restaurant in Beauregard in the Lot department that reminds me greatly of the Little Goat. We were in good hands with our server, Lennon (yes, named after THAT Lennon!) She was attentive, animated and very charming. We started with a Churchtown Dairy (Hudson) Copperwaite, local honeycomb with spelt bread appetizer that was on point. For our wine we had 4 glasses of Gamay, Coeur de la Reine, Loire, France 2023 (nice and plummy, but recommend getting a bottle rather than by the glass for a better value!) I had the Roasted Petite Filet, with Smoked Pepper Butter, Tallow-Fried Onions and Bernaise on the side. Tender, flavorful, and a generous portion that was enough for another meal. With that I had the barbecue-spiced crispy potatoes, a perfect combination. My husband had the Rigatoni Pork Ragu, Sourdough Soffrito dusted with Parmigiano. (Disclaimer: after 50 years together, if this dish is on the menu, I know he will order it. He did...and loved it, ranking it among the best he's ever had ), pairing it with Braised Romano Beans, Sofrito, and Smoked Pecorino. For dessert, we "shared" (ok, he had one bite and I devoured the rest) the Chocolate Budino,* Creme Fraiche, Oats dusted with Fleur and topped with a crisp Tuile. * A budino is what you get if a pot de crème hooked up with crème brûlée for a steamy night and had a baby! What is so charming about this restaurant is that it is so family-friendly. Several tables had babies and toddlers galore and it gave the room a welcome liveliness. Definitely not stuffy, and a welcome relief from snooty dining establishments. Kudos to Erin Winters and Taavo Somer for bringing such an extraordinary dining experience to my beloved Hudson Valley. Whoever doesn't leave this place 5 stars is clueless. This is the only spot in Rhinebeck I'd come back for. No offense to everyone else but damn this place has got it going on. Dinner was insanely good. The old fashioned, halloumi, and CHICKEN blew us away. The cheesecake too was to die for. Came back again the next morning for breakies, and that egg sandwich didn't disappoint. The ONLY thing that could use a little improvement was the iced coffee, it was a bit too strong / dark / bitter but honestly, that's just personal preference, I'm sure it works just fine for others. Old fashioned lemonade tasted like regular lemonade, nothing special there. Staff was nice. Atmosphere is perfect. Might do breakfast again here tomorrow it was that good. Stopped here for dinner on our Hudson valley vacation, passing through Rhinebeck. The menu was full of options I would want to eat as a vegetarian. Service was good but nothing amazing! One of the dishes came out less then hot so we sent it back and it was better in return. Asparagus burrata salad was our favorite and the seasonal rhubarb upside cake was very tasty to end on. Ghastly. A shitshow from end to end. First off, the bartender doesn't know the first thing about food service and handles everything with his bare hands. I watched him handle everything - mint, garnishes, everything, with his filthy raw bare hands, never washing them once. Expect to catch a viral infection if you come here. The wine is $16 a glass for wine that cost $10 a bottle. Poor selection, meager pour. $22 appetizer plate was so small we thought they'd given half of it to a starving orphan. The pita bread was good, everything else just seemed like a cheap knockoff, like they were trying to be an authentic Mediterranean restaurant, but they'd never actually been out of Rhinebeck. Laughably small portion of offensively poorly executed food. The steaks were dressed in some kind of weird sauce.. the waitress told us some long winded tale about how they changed from the old sauce to the new. The sauce was trash, it took away from the meat, which admittedly was good. Basically, the place is trying to be fine dining, but really, is just a cheap knockoff of all the other places in town. Nobody in the right mind would go to this dump when Terrapin is right down the way. I'd sooner flush $200 down the toilet and go to bed hungry before patronizing this place again. I will admit a horrific error in judgment by choosing this place. It's like a bad country store they made into a restaurant. It can't be real. There's no way this is a real restaurant, it's gotta be a front or laundry or something. I got suckered, but let my bad judgement keep you from wasting YOUR time and money. SLIM PICKINGS FOR A VEGAN: I wanted to try this restaurant with friends, and party of 4, (3 omnivores and 1 vegan). After studying the menu online, I called and asked what they could serve for a vegan meal. A very polite young lady explained the possibilities: an excellent carrot dish and an excellent cauliflower dish. It's a collection of sides, not a coherent vegan meal with protein, carbohydrates and fats. Inexpensive beans would be simple and a vast improvement. I'm not coming to this restaurant with a party of 4, to watch my friends eat nice meals, and say it's great, while I eat excellent carrots. We were looking forward to trying Little Goat as a friend had told us it was an offshoot of Stephanie Izard's Little Goat in Chicago. It's not. That said, it's a cozy, well-designed and airy space that would fit there. The pastas we had were very good - small-portioned but exactly what we felt like. This would be a 4-star review on those attributes. Previous comments about slow, forgetful service and a dismissive manager are spot-on. It took 20 minutes to get our first drinks because, as the server said, she "had to go all the way to the walk-in" for the glasses of wine. There was a similar wait for our second glasses. The Nebbiolo I ordered to go with the rigatoni arrived ice-cold - not cellar temp cool but like it was from the same walk-in as the first round. When I mentioned it to her, she said "We always serve our Nebbiolo cold in the summer." The manager, who had been hovering - I assumed because the server was in training - fortunately stepped in to replace it. I sought the manager out at the end of the meal for a quiet, private conversation about some of the service glitches. I explained that my wife and I are both in the industry and like to tip generously but wanted to understand what had happened before deciding: "For example, is it true that you serve Nebbiolo ice-cold in the summer?" "No," she said. "So our server made that up?" to which the manager turned on her heel and strode to the kitchen. Frustrated, I asked the server if there were any particular reasons for the delays - was she in training, did our sitting outside create any issues, had the kitchen been slammed? She answered no to all but was quickly swept off by the manager who admonished me "Don't talk to her, she's just a child!" I doubt I will. Absolutely stunning. This place is gorgeous, and the food and drinks truly match. I had a beautiful floral cocktail that I liked so much I ordered another, and the fingerling potatoes with homemade garlic aioli were delish. I'll be dreaming about the charred spring pea and asparagus salad for the rest of my years - I almost regret getting this, because I was in town for just one day and will now wish I could have it all the time. I went by myself to have some snacks and a drink at the bar. I thought it was great. The bartender was super nice, very attentive. The ambiance inside is friendly, very clean, and welcoming. Service was prompt from the bartender. I thought the food was very good. I just got the mezze platter and some delicious olives plus a dessert. Suggestions from employees were on point. The food was very tasty. I've never had a meal in the actual restaurants, but I would highly recommend the bar. The only downside to the bar is that you're close to the kitchen and you can hear all the fuss that you probably normally wouldn't hear sitting at a table in the restaurant. read more

Ice cold cup of coffee. Burnt toast. No scrambled eggs of any kind on an egg menu which offers six different egg varieties- all poached or boiled. Freezing room- cold day but they need space heaters. Style over substance and nowhere near the standard that is to be expected of a restaurant charging the prices it does. Oy. My hopes were high, maybe vibing off the look of the place and the good times for the restaurant that preceded Little Goat in this space. My husband and arrived at 12:00 for brunch following a massage. We were both relaxed and looking for a good meal. We had reservations, but even that didn't go well initially as there was confusion about our reservation and who the host was. Confusion solved and we were shown to our table. Water arrived quickly as did an answer to my husband's question about the menu -- delivered was just slightest be of shade. Our server was lovely. Greeted us warmly and took orders for coffee and was practically running before I got the whole order out of my mouth. I had to say call her back to ask what scones they had (this was not on the menu). She told me and I ordered the dried fig scone. She arrived promptly with the scone and she took our order for brunch, and then she was off again. Scone was served with no condiments nor a question about whether we wanted butter or jam. We waited, and waited. I clocked the number of tables she appeared to be responsible for -- eight tables with six of them, including us, seated. Most with just two people. Ten minutes on, I had to start looking around for her and signal her with my eyes and a bit of a nod. I asked about our coffee. And she was off again. We waited another five minutes and the coffee arrived. No sugar or creamer on the table. None offered. She was off again. Our meal arrived. My husband got the grain bowl, which was loaded with sliced red onion. Onion were not included among the list of ingredients on the menu. And there were a lot. We couldn't find our server, so my husband signaled to another staff person. He arrived, listened and took the plate away without a word. Were they sending out another one? Waitress arrived to question us. My husband explained. We then heard her warn everyone around us as they were ordering the grain bowl. Another bowl arrived, freshly prepared and without onion. I started to eat mine, which was a poached egg with country ham and pan bread. The poached egg was the size of a quarter and the country ham was ONE very thin slice of country ham (aka prosciutto). I mean like what generally appears on top of a pizza (and then usually more than one slice). On the positive side, there was plenty of grated parmesan. A virtual cloud of it. The best part of the dish. Pan bread was okay, but it was cold. No salt and pepper on the table and none offered. No butter or jam with the meal and none offered. We left unimpressed. I left hungry -- and $75 poorer. It's really too bad, because it is a great space, a good location and we're locals, so we'd definitely be back if it had been good. read more

This is the spot where The Amsterdam was. Little Goat has made changes to the decor which are lovely! It is bright, clean, modern and very pretty. We had breakfast here on Saturday. My husband enjoyed the French toast while I had a poached egg on arugula with prosciutto or Parma ham and grated Parmesan served with this wonderful round bread. The quality of the food is excellent! However the word for the day is "small". Water glass - small, coffee served in a tea cup, food portions - small. Also the staff is little indifferent. No one seems very happy or welcoming. read more

We went during a recent trip to Rhinebeck. The pastries and, more importantly, the iced latte were so good we went back the following day.

Incredible new offering to the Rhinebeck dining scene. Have been twice (once with family, once with friends). Somewhat unusual menu that the owner described as "the way he likes to eat at home with his family" meaning shareable plates, lots of veggie options, small but high quality selection of proteins. The menu is smallish, but just about everything is worth trying. Standouts are the roasted potatoes, gnudi, trout and trio of dips, but everything was excellent. Decor is impeccable, service as well on first visit, but server on second visit seemed a bit flustered/overwhelmed. Just beginning to hit its stride after a few months, I'm excited for what's to come! read more

I've been eager to try Little Goat since the press blitz began some months ago. I regretted going shortly after walking in. Not that Rhinebeck needs another Italian menu. But all the hype made me curious. Plus I love to dine out. I'm a regular at local spots including Market Street, Le Petit Bistro and Kips Tavern. It was 1 p.m. on a Sunday and the brunch crowd was bustling. I was seated at the bar next to a nice looking straight couple when the gentleman bartender asked me what I wanted to drink. I glanced at the menu and selected a cold brew and a Bloody Mary. "We're out of Bloody Mary," he said. "Oh no!" I exclaimed with a smile, "There should be a sign on the door." "Can I get you something else?" he asked, "We have a full bar." "I'll start with the cold brew and take another look at the menu." When the cold brew came, served by a young woman, she noted they were out of the half and half I'd requested. "This is whole milk," she said. When the gentleman bartender returned, I asked for a Paloma. "We don't have grapefruit juice," he said. "We're not really set up for brunch." I like the look of this place, and the fridge with take home options. I got coffee my first two visits, today I bought the ham sandwich they offer. The bread was nice and soft, but I didn't like the texture of the ham and it was bland tasting. The coffee is great, they have an espresso machine. For the prices they're charging, I expect there to be better and more sweetener options besides Sugar in the Raw or fake sugar. All I wanted was some white Domino's sugar. That shouldn't be too much to ask for to put in my $7 latte. Be prepared to wait a while for that coffee too. Maybe I'll go back, but probably not for quite some time. read more

Unfortunate when a chef knows nothing about food and tries to be fancy and clever. We were there for dinner. I had the rigatoni which was mezze rigatoni swimming in rich creamy oily sauce. The pasta tho was troppo al dente , inappropriate for that sauce. After 5 noodles I was full. My friend had Gnocchi Parisianne which sounded lovely. But the gnocchi were a little glob of mashed potatoe blackened on one side and mushy on the other. The peas were hard and the dish was swimming in oil. If you tipped the plate you could scoop the oil like soup. Almost sickening. Our child had plain pasta with a so much butter he couldn't eat it. We also got the Caesar salad which was just a bowl of shiffinade kale and parm. It needed some adornment like a bed of raddichio or romaine and maybe a few cherry tomatoes. $17.00 is stiff for a bowl of kale. The best thing was the crispy potatoes which were supposed to be greasy and heavy so right up the chef's alley. We paid the bill and headed straight across the street to the pizza place for a seltzer and diet coke to digest. This was our first visit to Little Goat and we had a wonderful experience. The Friday night vibe was lively and fun with an interesting, diverse crowd. Decor, lighting, and music are on point. The service was excellent. Our waitress was friendly and professional, knew the menu well, and was able to make great suggestions. And the food was the true star--excellent! We had Caesar salads, chicken and the trout entrees with a side of crispy potatoes and roast squash, and one of each of the desserts, and all were outstanding. Not inexpensive, but well worth it. Visited the Little Goat this evening for the first time. The space is very nice and the service was fair but nothing special. Menu is relatively limited with no actual appetizers just "snacks" and "vegetables". The food itself was excellent but the value is where they fall short. Started with the crispy potatoes and the tomato panzanella, each was tiny, like tapas size. For mains we had the chicken and the bucatini. Very expensive for what you get, they charge $10 for bread (which they don't tell you) and $12 for a beer. Would we return, eh probably not...prices are on par with a high end NYC restaurant and the portions are small. read more

Lovely restaurant bakery, I have only had their very delicious but messy breakfast sandwich and coffee on their beautiful porch. It was very good. My only thing is this sandwich is so messy and was not served with a napkin. Service was also a little slow for what it was but overall this was a delightful breakfast sandwich and coffee in a lovely location. Disappointing diner experience at the little goat . Very pricey menu, very tiny portions, mediocre cooking. Nothing was salted, nothing was seasoned. I should not have to salt my hummus. To add insult to injury, no salt or pepper on the tables either. The chicken entree was tiny and if you want a vegetable side to go with that it will cost you another $15. The chicken was so tiny that it left me wondering if it died of starvation or loneliness . The basque cheesecake dessert was served freezing cold, I couldn't really tell if it tasted of anything. The temperature inside the restaurant was freezing cold, we commented on it and the waiter/manager/bartender said the heat was on and working well. Most of the diners were wearing coats and hats.
