The decor was so cute The shop is small, you can eat inside, but I am sure it does become crowded. There is a bench outside the shop. There is the cutest cow bench as well inside. When we walked in we order quick. I got a strawberry milkshake to try and share, the reeses pieces ice cream and at the last minute I noticed "wooder" ice! Good ol Philadelphia treat. I highly recommend getting the water ice, I enjoyed the cotton candy flavor. They did have cherry,, and mango flavors as well. Not that reeses flavor was sooooo good. It had great peanut butter flavor with a few reeses pieces to enjoy. The strawberry shake had chunks of strawberries in it and the cup was laced with strawberry syrup/sauce. The two employees working when I was there were a lot of fun. They helped guide us on their flavors. They put in a lot of effort to make my strawberry shake look and taste yummy.

The vibe at Cowlick's, however, was totally different. As soon as I walked into the busy shop I was warmly greeted and I saw the employees smiling and engaging with customers. The shop is bright, well-lit and colorful. They have a segmented overhead menu for their traditional ice cream and for the plant-based ice cream, which is clearly labeled and easy to read. I got the plant-based Cookies & Cream and my husband got their award-winning Carmel Cookie Butter flavor. We had great, friendly service and a smooth order process. This was my first time in a Cowlick's shop and I love that they give you a waffle cone chip with your order! I love waffle cones but usually opt for the cup because it's less expensive and less messy, but this was the best of both worlds with the waffle cone chip! The plant-based Cookies & Cream is made from pea protein and was rich, creamy, and delicious! My husband also enjoyed his Carmel Cookie Butter. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and I'm looking forward to coming back again next time!

You'll find yourself using your kids as a justification because you want to try another flavor tomorrow night. Their menu is all over the place and changes almost daily so you never know what you're going to be able to choose from but the same standard flavors are usually on there (vanilla, chocolate, and cookies and cream). The rest of the flavors will knock your socks off and you never know what you might find from upside-down pineapple cake, banana pie, and pb&j, it's a rollercoaster of flavors and emotions all at once and it will not disappoint. Listen, we're not here to count calories, we're on vacation. The team will help you enjoy your ice-cream experience (not that you can go wrong!).

While visiting Cape Charles for…read morethe first time two weeks ago, I stopped by Brown Dog Ice Cream since I wanted a dessert following dinner and saw a lot of people walking down the street with their ice cream cones and they had solid reviews. The shop isn't brightly lit, it's on the dim side, and you need to walk to the back of the shop to start your order. I came towards the end of the day and it wasn't crowded--there was one other person in line--but despite this and the long walk to the end of the shop I wasn't greeted by any of the staff. When I got to the start of the order line I was the only one in it and I looked at the overhead menu for some plant-based ice cream (google stated that Brown Dog Ice Cream carries plant-based ice cream options), there was an employee standing there who saw me standing in line and search the menu but didn't greet me or ask if I was ready to order--then I made eye contact with her to make sure she saw me obviously standing there and she STILL said nothing to me. Fortunately, there was another employee who came over and acknowledged me and kindly asked how she could help me. I let her know I was looking on the menu for plant-based ice cream but hadn't seen it. She let me know that Brown Dog does serve plant-based ice cream options but only in the summer months. I thanked her for her help and walked out. Because of the cold-shoulder I received when walking in and from the first employee, I won't be coming back for the summer plant-based options. I hope management hosts a training with all of their staff on how to treat people that walk into their shop...you kindly greet people when they walk in and when they are next in line, you greet them and ask how you can help them. Hopefully this improves.

When we came last year, it seemed like they were having an off night. We came today, however, and this will be our last visit. Our bill was over 100 (2 adults and 1 child, water to drink), and had the most disappointing food ever. Everything was incredibly bland, to the point of almost inedible. We began with a half-dozen order of oysters, which had very little meat. Even more frustrating was how they were served - they were full of shells mixed into the meat and dry (all the water had been dumped out), which meant that the people shucking did not know how to properly shuck an oyster. The crunch of the shells also made for an unpleasant eating experience. The lobster rolls had absolutely no flavor. I have never not finished a lobster roll in my life, but about halfway through I just gave up. We wanted to order crab cakes, but they were out (note that they've been out on our last several visits - this time we were there right when they opened, so they could not have run out). The children's chicken tenders appeared to have come straight out of the freezer. The Caesar salad was tasteless. I ordered the local vegetables and was given the option of Brussel sprouts or broccolini (these have been the options every time I've visited no matter the season). I was disappointed, since there is great produce on the Eastern Shore in the middle of July, none of which includes the fall/spring produce of Brussel Sprouts or Broccolini. The Broccolini wasn't cooked, but appeared to have been warmed while doused in olive oil (but no salt or other seasonings). The middle was still cold. We saw our server only a few times when she took our order and dropped off our food. Someone else dropped off the oysters, and dropped the oyster fork on the floor. She picked it up, apologized, and promised to return but we never saw her again so had to eat the oysters with the forks we had used for the caesar salad (not the best combination). The oysters weren't great to begin with, so it probably didn't make much difference. I'm disappointed in the Shanty, and disappointed at how much we spent on such a mediocre meal. I won't return.

While walking along Mason Avenue, I made reservations at The Shanty, and it turned out to be a great choice. The restaurant is just a short stroll from the main shopping area, down by the docks. You can park for free along Mason Avenue or drive directly to The Shanty, which has its own parking lot. One of the highlights was enjoying fresh seafood on the open-air porch with beautiful waterfront views. The atmosphere was relaxed, charming, and perfectly summery. They also had plenty of options for the kids, including mac and cheese and chicken fingers, so everyone was happy. I ordered the fish tacos, while my mom enjoyed the seafood chowder and a wedge salad. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we were hoping for after a day exploring Cape Charles. If you're visiting the area and looking for a casual waterfront meal with great seafood, a family-friendly menu, and a fun coastal vibe, The Shanty is definitely worth a visit.

The moment we walked in we were greeted by a beautiful sunset, and were seated by the windows so we can continue to enjoy the scenery. Our waitress Tricia was very attentive and added to a great evening. We started with some drinks and the calamari appetizer (gluten free!) and quickly finished that off. My husband ordered the NY Strip special, I ordered the fried oyster app (gluten free again!), and my daughter ordered the blackened shrimp mac and cheese. Everything was delicious and the mac and cheese was enough for multiple leftover meals, which my daughter already heated some up once and it was just as good as it was when we were there. We will definitely be back on our next trip up to Cape Charles. I would have scored it 5 stars but the service was very slow even with it not being that busy. We didn't mind because we were enjoying the scenery and each other's company but if we had small children with us, it would have likely been an issue.
