This will be my 5th Summer going to Cape Charles for 10 days with Family and Friend's. I cannot wait to stand in line for THE BEST baked goods and DELICIOUS sandwiches for boat and beach. Absolutely love, love, love this local bakery. Highly recommend!!! See you next week!!

I am visiting on the off season and didn't realize how many places would be closed. Luckily this bakery was open. Very cute inside, it's very inviting. The woman behind the counter was so friendly and even tried making recommendations based on what she knows was still open (thank you!). Aesthetically everything was perfect, it was hard to choose just one pastry. I got the sourdough loaf and the cheese danish and the lemon cheese danish. The bread was delicious and the danishes were some of the best ones I've ever had. This bakery is a must!

Walking in you are hit with the fresh aromas of baking breads. This is a 10/10 bakery! The women at the counter was so friendly and personable. It is so cute inside, the absolutely perfect small town bakery vibe. We tried the cheesecake, pumpkin pie, chocolate chip cookies and cheese danish. Absolutely devoured it all!

Charming little bakery in historic Cape Charles. We arrived a few minutes before 9:00am, they opened at 8:30. They were already out of chocolate croissants. By the time we placed our order at 9:17 they were out of plain croissants and cinnamon twists. I get that everything is freshly baked, but it seems they need to plan a little better than that. There were 4 girls behind the counter, but they only waited on one customer at a time, with one girl having to repeat everything in the order to another girl to ring them up. I ordered a bagel with lox spread and got veggie spread, we also had the monkey bread, blueberry muffin and a breakfast sandwich, all of which were good.

After vacationing in Cape Charles, we discovered Mason Avenue Bakery. The inside was clean and well kept. The baked goods on display all looked very good. The raspberry tart, chocolate walnut brownie and all of their sandwiches were fantastic. The service was quick and friendly and they helped make recommendations. I recommend taking a visit if you are in Cape Charles.

Got myself a Cinnamon swirl which was good. Did not have a variety of drinks. This bakery is family owned and service was great!

This is not a place you would walk in off the beach to. The owner has her hands in everything from creating the weekly menu to waiting tables herself. She is a lovely woman, very direct but also very excited to share her process and her culture. The plates are small, but pack a punch. My husband and I shared a starter, two first course dishes, a single second course dish, and two desserts. We were satisfied, but certainly could have ate more because the food was amazing! My favorite was the burrata appetizer. The combination of flavors in this was unreal. Balsamic with some sort of pesto tasting tomato sauce and local sun dried tomatoes? I don't even know but I'll remember it forever. The creamy risotto we ordered combined flavors of leeks, fennel, and an amazing sausage that was hidden in there somewhere. My husband commented that the scallops we had in our second course were the best of his life, absolutely perfectly seared and the owner kindly told us how she did them. The arugula was huge and definitely local as I've never seen arugula like this in the grocery store. It was topped with a blueberry vinaigrette the owner made that was out of this world. The food brought us back to our time in Italy and we spent dinner talking about that trip. It really brought us back! Don't miss this charming little place while you're in town if you can swing it.

A friend of mine said that they had a wonderful dinner. So I said let's check it out. First, having to make a reservation and a deposit it seems like that is becoming more frequent at some of the better restaurants. So we arrived about five minutes before our reservation and was greeted promptly and pleasantly a table was ready for us. As I'm sitting down, taking a look at the table, I noticed a paper napkin, fork, knife, and plastic mats. Once sitting noticing the metal chairs not so comfortable, but I guess just OK. Server in the other young lady made everybody feel welcome and hearing the conversation at other tables from them it's all about the experience. I always want to have a great experience, but the food is as important. I did order an appetizer and it was tasty and then we waited nearly an hour in our server came and asked what were we thinking for dessert. Oh, I did leave out. She did stop by once or twice to fill our classes with a bottle of wine that we ordered. The tapwater would've been fine if it would've been chilled, but it wasn't. Back to her asking about dessert. I told her we'd take a look once we got her meal. She looked at me like you haven't had your meal now it's the server was paying any attention to us. She would've known we hadn't had her meal. I began to really stew at that point. Within about 10 minutes food to arrive. Scallops were tasty whatever my wife ordered with crab. You could barely find any crab or taste it. The owner walked by and asked how everything was and she said something about the server asking about the start before we even had her meal. There was no apology. I couldn't wait to get out of there. One of the other servers walked by and I said I'd like to have my check she brought back a check and I attempted to hand her my credit card and she said somebody would come by with an iPad. Another 10 minutes I then paid with a credit card. My tip should have. Reflected the service, but I went with the 20%. As I hit the 20% I noticed it was three dollars more than what it should have been then I realized that was calculated off the total price, including tax not a good move. This is not an upscale restaurant. The service was terrible and the food was not that great. And the fact that I waited an hour to be asked about dessert and hadn't had my food with no apology leads me to this scathing negative review. Word-of-mouth is more powerful than anything and I will share that just I like I would, if it was delicious.

When we came last year, it seemed like they were having an off night. We came today, however, and this will be our last visit. Our bill was over 100 (2 adults and 1 child, water to drink), and had the most disappointing food ever. Everything was incredibly bland, to the point of almost inedible. We began with a half-dozen order of oysters, which had very little meat. Even more frustrating was how they were served - they were full of shells mixed into the meat and dry (all the water had been dumped out), which meant that the people shucking did not know how to properly shuck an oyster. The crunch of the shells also made for an unpleasant eating experience. The lobster rolls had absolutely no flavor. I have never not finished a lobster roll in my life, but about halfway through I just gave up. We wanted to order crab cakes, but they were out (note that they've been out on our last several visits - this time we were there right when they opened, so they could not have run out). The children's chicken tenders appeared to have come straight out of the freezer. The Caesar salad was tasteless. I ordered the local vegetables and was given the option of Brussel sprouts or broccolini (these have been the options every time I've visited no matter the season). I was disappointed, since there is great produce on the Eastern Shore in the middle of July, none of which includes the fall/spring produce of Brussel Sprouts or Broccolini. The Broccolini wasn't cooked, but appeared to have been warmed while doused in olive oil (but no salt or other seasonings). The middle was still cold. We saw our server only a few times when she took our order and dropped off our food. Someone else dropped off the oysters, and dropped the oyster fork on the floor. She picked it up, apologized, and promised to return but we never saw her again so had to eat the oysters with the forks we had used for the caesar salad (not the best combination). The oysters weren't great to begin with, so it probably didn't make much difference. I'm disappointed in the Shanty, and disappointed at how much we spent on such a mediocre meal. I won't return.

While walking along Mason Avenue, I made reservations at The Shanty, and it turned out to be a great choice. The restaurant is just a short stroll from the main shopping area, down by the docks. You can park for free along Mason Avenue or drive directly to The Shanty, which has its own parking lot. One of the highlights was enjoying fresh seafood on the open-air porch with beautiful waterfront views. The atmosphere was relaxed, charming, and perfectly summery. They also had plenty of options for the kids, including mac and cheese and chicken fingers, so everyone was happy. I ordered the fish tacos, while my mom enjoyed the seafood chowder and a wedge salad. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we were hoping for after a day exploring Cape Charles. If you're visiting the area and looking for a casual waterfront meal with great seafood, a family-friendly menu, and a fun coastal vibe, The Shanty is definitely worth a visit.

From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by a whimsical, nautical meets industrial interior. Think exposed brick, quirky elephant and octopus artwork, and cozy seating that feels both inviting and upscale. It's the kind of place where you'll want to linger over your meal and soak in the unique ambiance. As for the food, it did not disappoint. I started with the Ale & Onion Soup, and wow. This was comfort in a bowl! The robust flavor of Guinness melded perfectly with the caramelized onions, and the bubbling gruyère on the toasted bread points just took it over the top. It was savory, rich, and perfect for the chilly day. My friend went for the She Crab Soup, and couldn't stop raving about it. Creamy and absolutely packed with local crab meat. The puffed oyster crackers and a sprinkle of Old Bay were the ultimate finishing touch. I managed to sneak a bite, and it was heavenly! We also asked the bartender for a fun cocktail, and they whipped up a bright, lemony drink that was as refreshing as it was beautiful. It was perfectly balanced and not too sweet, served with a citrus twist. Service was great. Friendly, attentive without hovering, and happy to make recommendations.
