    Dumplings in spicy sauce
    Michelle A.

I'm so very late to the game with this restaurant. I've heard so much hype, but to be honest, not a huge fan of spicy food. But my husband had a cold and couldn't taste anything. He asked for bold flavors and I immediately thought of Sichuan food. We decided to finally give this spot a chance. We arrived to a completely empty restaurant on a Saturday night. We both were worried that they lost their mojo. We were the only dine in customers for awhile, then people started to trickle in. We knew service was on the slow side since it's a mom and pop joint, so we were happy that we got to order before the rush. Once our food came out we were so happy we came. The flavors were spot on and exactly what we wanted. The stars of the meal were the scallion fried rice and braised fish in spicy sauce. We couldn't get enough of both! A bonus was that Food Baby and family walked in as we were eating! I know they're regulars here and it was nice to see Mama Pepper's face light up when they walked in. I know it's hard to get to this location and most people travel to Flushing for Sichuan food. But please keep visiting and help keep this family run business a float! We're already planning our next visit!

After all these years on my bookmarks I finally got to try this spot because my wife was actually craving szechuan. I'm upset that we didn't go sooner because everything was delicious. We had the dumplings, spicy chicken, fish braised in spicy sauce and the scallion fried rice that went so good with the food we ordered. I'm definitely coming back to try more!!

Very friendly couple running this Szechuan restaurant. The flavorful dishes do take some time to come out, but were very good. Some of the dishes we tried were eggplant with garlic sauce, salt and pepper prawn, spicy fish (do ban yu) and pork and celery. The interior was clean and roomy and had some interesting artworks displayed.

There is one reason to go to this place, and it's for the scallion fried rice. That's it! It's so damn good! Everything else is good as well, but I would die for that green rice. It's a sweet little restaurant run by a lovely married couple, so go ahead and support this small business. There are paintings everywhere in the restaurant, and the lady who runs it is super sweet.

My daughter and I were headed to the nearby airport to pick up the rest of the family and we wanted something good to eat on the way. Found Little Pepper and knew it was the answer. Much easier to access than the Flushing spots but it absolutely stands up to them. Seating is comfortable and the restaurant is quiet enough for a conversation. Certainly seemed to be a family operation. Very nice woman working the front of house and a gentleman preparing all of the dishes. It felt like dining at someone's house, they served a table at a time. If you were late to a nearby theater, this may not be the choice for you. If you're patient and looking to eat an authentic meal, this is the place! At the tail end of a hard eating weekend, we didn't want to order too much. We checked out the menu while enjoying a complimentary pot of tasty tea. (Hint of oolong) We ordered silken tofu with scallion sauce, cumin lamb, sesame chicken, and pork fried rice. Menu had at least 30 items I would like to try. Silken tofu and cumin lamb packed flavor and a solid spice level. Probably not their spiciest dishes but they delivered. Lamb was tender and the tofu was in fact "silken". My daughter's sesame chicken was a high end example of a basic dish. The pork fried rice delivered quality ingredients made in a non salty/greasy way. Excellent dinner!

I've eaten at a lot of Szechuan places, and this is by far the best one I've been to. This is mainly due to their huge selection of dishes, many of which I've never heard of, and the fact that they actually cater to a wide variety of palates and spice tolerances. Items I would get again, ranked by preference, were the thinly sliced pork belly, sautéed cabbage, chicken in garlic sauce, beef and ox tripe, scallion fried rice, and preserved egg. All these dishes were packed with flavor. I loved how thin the pork belly was, and the cabbage was a really nice palate cleanser from all the oily/fried items since it wasn't salty. The two items I would pass on next time are the dumplings in hot sauce and the chongqing chicken. Even despite that, both were also really good. The dumplings just felt a little basic to me and the chicken was too tough for my liking. Honestly though it seems like you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. We came on a Saturday around 7pm and only a couple of tables were occupied. The food came out quickly and service was great. I really wish I lived closer because I already want to come back!

The owner here is really sweet and is planning to retire soon, so come here before it changes ownership. The food was good. The scallion fried rice is definitely unique and pretty good but not as a stand alone dish. It's more of a side dish to eat the other food with. I really enjoyed the lamb with onions and scallions. Very tasty and not spicy. We also had mapo tofu but I wasn't a fan. Maybe because we asked for mild and no pork.

Starting off, the numbing szechuan chicken was my least favorite of the dishes - the pieces of chicken were really tiny and there were a lot of peppercorns. I wish they made the pieces of chicken slightly larger as it was irritating to slowly pick it out towards the end of finishing it. Now, what went well were the stone pot with the fish. Normally not a huge fan of fish, so if I can enjoy eating fish a place has done well in preparing it. The soup was really flavorful and everyone at my table enjoyed it. The sweet and sour pork was also nice. The breading was crispy and the sauce had a nice tangy flavor to it and the texture was interestingly satisfying. The grilled beef ribs and bao buns were one of my favorite. The beef rib was very tender and went well with the buns and condiments that were provided.

Hot Space is known for their grilled fish served in a large pan (kept heated with a flame underneath) with various toppings that you can choose from including enoki mushrooms, cabbage, veggies, fish tofu, soft tofu, kelp, lotus root, black fungus, rice cakes, ramen noodles, and glass noodles. They have options for the flavor of the broth/grilled fish including mala spicy, spicy tofu (comes with soft tofu), garlic, tomato, and more. Their menu also includes appetizers and other entrees including crawfish and shrimp. For appetizers, we tried the grilled fish tofu skewer, cold tofu with preserved duck egg, and grilled eggplant with garlic. I would recommend all of these appetizers. If you enjoy fish, this place is worth trying especially because you can customize it with toppings that you like. When you spend $120, you can get a free tower of a sparkling fruit drink (it was just okay so don't go out of your way to spend $120 just to get the drink). Free dessert , herbal jelly in milk, comes at the end of the meal, but this wasn't too enjoyable. Service: Staff members were very friendly and helpful. They came around to refill drinks frequently. Ambiance: The restaurant is a good size because it has two floors. Good for both small and large groups. Seating is comfortable. Overall, I would recommend this place!

Con about this is, I didn't realize there would be a wait so I didn't bother making reservations on Google so we had to wait 40 mins. No seats so we decided to go hang out at tangram while we waited and waiting for her text/call. The little one has been hyped up so much from mukbangs that she's constantly craving crawfish. I mentioned to her that a couple places in Flushing sell crawfish Chinese style and she wanted to try. Did a search on Yelp and saw someone recently raved about the crawfish here. Every order of crawfish comes in 2lbs and we ordered the spiced flavored one. This crawfish gets an A++. Little one loved the flavors and freshness. So tasty. Not only that, but these were probably the biggest crawfish we've ever seen! Even the claws had meat! We also loved how they chopped off the top of the head to removed the "filter". We also ordered a couple small dishes to try. For cold apps we ordered the pigs ear and okra. We love the crunchy texture of the pigs ear and the more we ate it, the more addicting it got to eat. Okra was also a bit. For the skewers, we ordered the lamb beef and intestine. Honestly the lamb and beef skewers were probably the worst ones we've ever tried. It was a struggle to finish them. The meat was tasteless, hard and overcooked. No fat ratio at all. The pig intestines were perfectly cooked. Love when it's crispy. We love finding a place that's been around that's actually a huge hit for us. We will be back. If you spend $120, they will gift you a huge carafe of passion fruit tea.

Cuisine: 6 Service: 7…read moreDecor: 5 Value: 8 Overall: 6 This is the restaurant that replaced Szechuan House, a beloved staple in Flushing since 1985. The food is very different, it's from the Dongbei (northeast) region of China. However, people will inevitably compare the flavors to its predecessor, though it is definitely not an apples to apples comparison. The cooking style of Dongbei cuisine is very hearty and savory. They also prefer noodles, breads, and dumplings as their staple over rice. Due to the extremely cold weather, they also focus quite of bit on pickled vegetables. Looking through their huge menu, I mainly focused on ordering the local dishes from Dongbei and veered away from items that are popular from other parts of China like Shanghainese soup dumplings or Szechuan sauerkrat fish. Here is what we had below. Spiced Wide Noodle w/ Mixed Vegetable & Pork (6.5/10) - This popular cold noodle dish was decent, but I had better versions around Flushing. Slightly too sauced up, but lacked a bit of vinegary touch. Spicy Pork Kidney (8/10) - This is one of the only non-Dongbei dishes I got because I'm a fan. Well, as expected, the flavors are not as bold or spicy as how it would be made by a Szechuan restaurant. However, it was boiled perfectly and super tender. Mix Dried Tofu Shreds (3/10) - Not sure why anyone would pay for this dish. Basically combining flavorless julienne dried tofu with cilantro. Tofu w/ Century Egg Salad (3/10) - Not inedible, but almost no flavor and felt like they just threw a bunch of chopped up century egg into silky tofu. Seasoning? I make a much better version at home. North China Sticky Pancake (6/10) - Stuffed with slightly sweet red bean paste, this sticky rice pancake is okay, but nothing special. Stewed Chicken w/ Mushroom (7/10) - The chicken was clearly overcooked, but the soup flavors were excellent, allowing the tree mushrooms and vermicelli soak up all the yumminess. Sautéed Triple Vegetables (8/10) - Classic dish from Dongbei done relatively well. I believe it could use a bit more crispiness, but pretty good overall. Pine Nuts & Baby Corn (6.5/10) - The baby corn was quite sweet, while the pine nuts add a bit of earthiness. It's a decent dish, but not special. Cumin Lamb (7.5/10) - I wish they used fresh cumin instead of powder, it would have made this dish even more aromatic and flavorful. Meat was relatively tender. Fried Pork in Sweet Sour Sauce (6/10) - Be nice if the pork was a bit thicker and definitely more tender. The batter was mochi-like and crispy. Shredded Pork w/ Bean Paste (7/10) - Definitely over salted, too much bean sauce. However, the pork was tender and the bead curd sheets were delicious. Sautéed Pork Intestine w/ Fresh Chili Pepper (8/10) - Maybe my favorite dish of the night. A few others said the same. Fatty and luxurious with a bit of heat. Crispy Fish Cutlet (7/10) - This dish was served cold and not crispy as the name suggests. However, the bones are all edible from the cooking process, marinated in a semi-sweet soy based sauce. Pumpkin Puffs (6/10) - Not bad, but once again, I had better versions around Flushing. More red bean paste filling and more pumpkin taste would be nice. Napa Cabbage & Pork Dumplings (7.5/10) - The skin was pretty smooth and not too thick. I do prefer one that has more filling, but it tasted pretty good. Shrimp, Pork & Chive Dumplings (7/10) - Same as the other dumpling. I also didn't taste the shrimp much. As for the food, I would say that there is better specialty shops around Flushing that sell Dongbei style noodles, dumplings, or pancakes. There are also restaurants that cook cold and hot dishes with more flavor. However, the pricing on everything is very reasonable and portion sizes are large. One more thing to add, the owner was kind and offered us free beers and beverages for the evening since we were a large party and it's their grand opening week. The waitress was also quite attentive to our requests and patient with my questions. However, the food did come out way too fast and furious. I had to remind them to slow down, which they eventually did. Unfortunately, our group of 12 came for the food and it just didn't hit the spot for most of us. I am more than willing to come back and try more dishes since the service and value is there.

The restaurant was much larger than it first appeared, and the atmosphere added just as much to the experience as the food itself. The room had a lively, bustling energy with tables spread across multiple sections, and the steady flow of diners reflected its popularity as a destination for a full hot pot meal. The hot pot menu offered a wide variety of broths, meats, seafood, vegetables, and handmade specialties. We appreciated that there were options for both spice lovers and those who prefer something milder, with the signature Chongqing broth delivering the classic numbing mala flavor while the tomato and mushroom broths provided a lighter alternative. The ingredients tasted fresh, and there were plenty of premium cuts of beef, seafood, and specialty items to choose from. The self-serve sauce bar was another highlight, letting us customize our dipping sauce exactly how we liked it, with a wide range of condiments and toppings that allowed for endless combinations. The restaurant gets very busy, especially during dinner and weekends, so planning ahead is important. Reservations are highly recommended because walk-in waits can easily stretch over an hour. Even with the large dining room, the staff did a good job keeping everything organized and regularly checked in throughout the meal. Despite how crowded it could get, service remained attentive and food arrived at a steady pace. The team moved through the room with efficiency, keeping the broth refilled and the table cleared without making the experience feel rushed. Overall, Chongqing Lao Zao delivers much more than a typical hot pot meal. The combination of high-quality ingredients, customizable broths, and one of the most impressive themed dining spaces we have experienced makes it a place we would gladly return to. If you are looking for authentic Chongqing-style hot pot in Flushing, this is one of the strongest options available.

We were seated towards the back of the restaurant where we found a cockroach crawling on the bench seat. Also, the straw decoration on the bench seat was uncomfortable throughout the meal for me particularly. Our waiter, since it was our first time, helped us a lot in choosing the broth and its spice level (we ended up getting tomato and mild chongqing), as well as helping us with the amount of food we would be ordering (which turned out to be almost the perfect amount of food for our party of 6). Some of my favorite dishes that we got were the: - Wide Potato Noodles - Doesn't take that long to cook, SO chewy and nice, pairs well with any broth or sauce - Enoki Mushrooms - My favorite kind of mushroom, even more chew and great noodle substitute - Fried Breadsticks - Very crunchy and don't lose that much crunch whenever dipped or soaked in the broths. - Sliced Beef - Standard and really good meat option for hotpot. Some of their specialty beefs are also interesting, but I ended up just preferring this over those. - Beef Tendon - I lied. This was the best meat option. Extremely soft and melts in your mouth. Doesn't take more than 5 seconds to cook. Just so good. Even with everything that I liked, I didn't find that much that was superior to other hot pot places that I have been to. I did enjoy the food that we did have, but with the insane wait that I would likely have if I came back as well as the high price of the meal, I don't know if this would be worth coming back to in the future.

It's a hidden haven for Sichuan food aficionados, where authenticity reigns supreme, and every bite tells a story of dedication and flavor mastery. The food portions are pretty big good for sharing.
