We shopped around and interviewed a few landscape architects before Liu Landscape was recommended to us. We gave Crystal a call and she walked us through the entire process. Her prices are reasonable, but her knowledge and experience made her our overall choice. Crystal was always available and patient with us throughout the process. Sometimes we would email her late on an evening or Friday, expecting her to respond the following week. Instead, she would respond that same night or during the weekend and offered to jump on a call if we still needed clarification on something. Also, she explained that with the set price for the landscape design and drawings, it would include any revisions that our city deemed did not meet their requirements. However, our city chose to reject the plans a couple of times because the city did not follow their own requirements. Crystal made the revisions to our plans at no additional cost, and we were extremely grateful for her generosity. We hope that when the city finally approves our plans, that we can work with Crystal to complete the project as well. My wife and I had a great experience working with Crystal and can trust that she does what she says and will go above and beyond your expectations like she did for us. DO NOT HIRE! DO NOT HIRE! DO NOT HIRE! Save yourself the money, time, frustration, and the headache of dealing with someone we found arrogant, dismissive, and extraordinarily difficult to work with! Crystal prepared landscape plans that did not follow important City-approved documents we had already provided, became dismissive when we questioned the discrepancies, eventually told us she would no longer continue our project, and still retained $1000 of our design fee. And the biggest red flag: when we contacted the licensed landscape architect connected with the work, that person told us they did not work for Crystal and had never heard of our project. For a project involving City approval and licensed professional work, that was completely unacceptable to us. We hired Crystal expecting her to review and follow the City-approved preliminary landscape plan, approved site plan, approval letter, and other requirements we had already sent her. Instead, all parts of her drawings were inconsistent with those approved documents. When we raised discrepancies between her plans and the approved documents, she repeatedly defended her own design and argued that what she had drawn was more reasonable rather than simply addressing why it did not match what had already been approved by the City. Throughout the process, we found her communication condescending and dismissive. Asking questions about her work became unnecessarily difficult. When several questions about the design could not be clearly answered and we continued seeking clarification, she eventually told us that she had "put up with us for a long time," said she would no longer work on the project, and told us to find someone else. She therefore left the project unfinished. We now have to spend additional time and money having another professional review and potentially redo the work, with possible consequences for permitting and our project schedule. Despite being the one who decided to discontinue the work, Crystal still retained approximately $1,000 of our design fee. We were also extremely concerned about the licensed landscape architect associated with the work. When we contacted the licensed individual whose information had been provided to us, that individual told us directly that they did not work for Crystal and had never heard of our project. We have asked Crystal to identify the actual licensed landscape architect responsible for, supervising, or reviewing our landscape design and to provide that person's license and contact information. We are not people who normally leave negative reviews. In fact, we generally prefer to resolve problems directly and move on rather than publicly criticize someone. Crystal, you are the first person who has made us feel that leaving a review like this was necessary. We have requested the return of the remaining $1,000, and we intend to pursue the appropriate next steps available to us to recover our money and address the unresolved issues if this cannot be resolved directly. Update: Crystal's response reinforces one of our biggest concerns: she did not appear to understand the role of the preliminary landscape plan or how the overall City approval process worked for this project. read more

LIU landscape was our choice of landscape architect design. I worked with LU and had wonderful experiences. I interviewed five different companies for my landscape project in the new development in Montebello. Crystal came through with the best price as well as landscape design in a very timely fashion. Some of the other companies didn't even bother to put in their bids. Liu Landscape helped me apply for my HOA permit, as well as designing the entire space and giving me suggestions as to what works best in this area. While searching for a landscaping company, Liu Landscape caught my attention. It is a minority woman owned business and I am a minority woman so I hoped I'd be able to support the company. I have never worked with a female contractor before but thought because she is a woman, she probably will pay more attention to details. My only concern was whether the company only dealt with big projects but Crystal assured me that Liu Landscape works with projects of all sizes so I proceeded to sign the contract without much hesitation. $600 (50% of the design fee) was paid. The initial plan took about a month which was not a big deal in my case since I was not ready anyway. But really a month!! It is a nice design but wait! the project quote for my 1500 sq ft yard is $70k. Are you serious? To be fair, I didn't give her a budget but I said something practical and reasonable. Do you call that a reasonable budget?? Ok if you look her proposal further, she charged over $18,000 for a block wall (60' x 6'). Totally price gouging!! I also asked the top 2 landscaping co in the SGV area (per Yelp) to give me a quote as well. Their price is half of that. If you have no interest to do a small job, be up front. This is such a dirty tactic to make money off the design fee. Not sure if it is a common practice in the landscaping industry-additional 5% was added as general liability and worker's compensation. Isn't that her business cost? I didn't see that in my other proposals. Obviously, I asked for a plan revision. I told Crystal I can't afford a $70k backyard. She immediately asked me for the remaining balance of the design fee. Wait a minute, the agreement said the payment is due at the completion of phase 1: conceptual landscape master plan. The master plan is not done. Honestly, I don't know Crystal & her co. How could I guarantee that they would complete the design if I paid the balance? So I said no. Crystal threatened to send me to the collection agency. Fast forward to today, only one revision is received and once again she threatens to send me to the collection agency. Crystal, please read your own agreement carefully!! "The payment is due at the completion of phase 1: conceptual landscape master plan." I want a nice backyard, not a full blown hassle like this. Crystal maybe great for big construction projects. However, my experience with her has been nothing but negative. Just want to share my experience so you can be your own judge. read more

I contacted Liu Landscape after running into some difficulty with my sideyard and backyard renovation. Crystal quickly scheduled a site visit, and I could tell right away she was very knowledgeable about planning and permitting for my city. This was of utmost importance to me since I had to fire my prior contractor for reneging on promised permits. I requested a 3D design (hardscaping, outdoor kitchen, turf, outdoor tile) and was able to find a lot of inspiration from the company's own website. Crystal delivered the initial design and requested revisions within a couple of days. I really loved the modern design, and we requested a quote for construction as well. Ultimately, I did not pursue construction with Liu Landscape, but this was mostly due to personal budgetary constraints. Her quote was actually very competitive (compared to 5+ other bids). Over several months, Crystal remained willing to correspond with and help me with my project. She even provided a 2D layout upon request. Regarding her communication style, Crystal is quite matter-of-fact over text and e-mails and warm during in-person meetings. It was a very difficult decision to not work with Liu Landscape, because I really loved the design and plan. Design: We first interviewed several designers this past summer and found that Crystal's price was very reasonable and we felt she was someone we could work with. After many rounds of feedback, she and her team created a design that met our requirements, which wasn't super straight forward because we wanted to keep some parts of the existing yard intact. Construction: The crew was professional, worked very clean, cleaned up each day. Quality was up to par. We got artificial grass installed and I googled the steps that it entailed and they seemed to follow everything to the T. Construction was finished on time and schedule. Luckily, they happen to finish before the season's first big storm and we were able to see the turf drained very well and the stamped concrete didn't pool water. Overall: Crystal is very responsive, flexible, reasonable, and attentive. Her crew also did a good job. Our end product was good (the details weren't perfect) and we're happy with our new yard. LIU Landscape did an awesome job! Juan and his team worked very diligently. They do not drag their feet like the competitors! They work fast! The weather in California this time (September 2020) was super hot (up to 115 degrees with bad air conditions because of all the fires) and they work 8 hours a day. Juan and Crystal are very responsive to my inquiries (emails, texts, and phone calls) and willing to adjust the plan. I'm very happy as choosing LIU Landscape to do my project. LIU did an excellent job. They will come back to do my courtyard and sideyard project next year. I will highly recommend LIU. read more

RUN Away, it does not even deserve a one star. Crystal left a flyer at the front of my home. The next day I called the number on the flyer. On Friday or January 5, 2018 Crystal came over to look at my yard. She asked if I have other quotes and I said Yes, Crystal asked for a copy of other quotes so she can use the measurements. I told her, its better if she measures herself. She said she will cone back as she does not have the tool to measure???? At that point, she asked for a $500 deposit. I asked why she needs a deposit? I should have suspected already. Because I trusted her, I gave her $500 cash and asked for a receipt and she gave me paper with $500 written on it dated January 2017- I corrected her and told her its 2018. Before she left, she told me she will give me the sketch evening of that day which was Friday or Monday. Monday came I called her in the morning- she said she is busy and with other clients. I emailed her to ask for a copy of license, insurance and workers compensation as our HOA requires them. She emailed me back and told me she cannot give me the copies of license, insurance and workers comp. as they do not normally provide those to clients but they can to the HOA???? And that I need to sign a contract first so they can endorse me in the insurance. At 6pm I emailed her and asked for the drawing she promised, she sent me a drawing by email at 6:30. pm, as soon as I received the drawing I called her to hopefully discuss the drawing, she did not answer again and texted me and said she is at a restaurant having dinner. So I patiently waited for her call that evening so I can discuss the drawing she sent. The next day, I called her again - no response. At that point I've had enough, I texted her to tell her just to return my $500 deposit minus cost of drawing. She said its non-refundable. $500 for a drawing that I did not get to approve because Crystal refuses to communicate. Crystal responded and told me why I was calling her at 6:30 pm? Well, she sent me the sketch at 6:30 pm, what does she expect? She knows I have been waiting all day long for She refused to give me back my money. Did she pissed me off intentionally so I will have enough and call it off. Beware!!! Update: You indicated on your comment about racist comments!!! What comments? You never gave me a chance to talk to you. I did not notice you have employees too, as other than you, nobody else answers your company's phone. Please do not fabricate information, I was the one disadvantaged here not you. It was my mother who gave you the deposit and you took advantage of old folks. Always makes mistakes on plot plans and always requires multiple revisions wasting our time and money. But the main thing is her (Crystal, the ownder) attitude. She's always been very condescending and demanding, even though we are the client which bring her businesses. She's been around advertising as a landscaping company but she's never advertised their CSLB license or whether they are bonded and insured. Most of the newly built homes now require a HOA approval before the homeowners can do any upgrade to their backyard. There are a lot of paperwork involved for the submission, such as the application, drawing, pictures, and a list of the type of plants and material will be used in the project. I worked with Crystal and she took care all the necessary paperwork for us, provided us with the design, and she was willing to listen to our options and make changes. We used their contractor for the project, they did a quality job and their price is reasonable. We used them for only designing our small backyard. I have to say they do this business a little different than any other landscaping companies. Crystal came to our house for the appointment. She does not measure on site with tools. They used some type of software to measure remotely with air view which she told me. She charges $500 for design. $250 deposit and $250 paid once the design is approved. We went to her office to look at the 3D proof on her computer and made changes alongside. Crystal has knowledge on plants. We did use her design at the end and are happy about it. I have a brand new construction residential home, not too far from Liu landscaping company. I was referred to them by one of our contacts who I found out later have not had any business with Liu landscape before referring them to us. I was not happy with the service as they didn't communicate well ever since the beginning. I thought that I paid for the whole landscaping planning and designing. Not until after a few meetings that I found out that I had to pay extra for completion of the design. Since I didnt know any one and thought that I should stay with them, I went ahead and pay for completion. However, after my plan was approved online, Liu landscape would not help printing the hard copies of the blueprints so I can get the stamp from the county. I requested several times and was given excuses or not returning my calls just for a few copies of the blueprints. I am really disappointed the fact that I paid almost $9,000 and not being able to get just a few copy of the blueprints for my records read more

We hired L.I.U. Landscape for our big yard. There were a lot of details during the design and construction phase: plants species, size and colors; materials texture, colors and price; pipe size, locations and brands etc. most of these are beyond our knowledge. Crystal was really patient to tell us the difference and her recommendations. It's not easy for her to over-sighting the construction job sites and also running the office smoothly, however, she still made time for us whenever we had questions or concerns. We changed our mind a couple times during the design and construction phases, Crystal always work with us to make the changes and do extra work without charge to make the yard looks even better.
