Hot Pot goodness | IG @moniquedao

This place was such a great find. It was the closest hot pot restaurant to our hotel, and after looking at several others, this one checked all the boxes for me: all-you-can-eat, a self-serve food bar, a Sichuan-style broth, and under $40. They don't actually call it Sichuan broth. It's listed as something like "Spicy," but it's close enough. What I wasn't expecting was just how spicy it was. Wow. Next time I'll probably ask if they can tone it down a notch. We also went on a weekday, so dinner was a little cheaper. The meats were all good quality, although a bit fattier than I expected. I usually love fatty cuts like pork belly and toro, but these leaned a little too far in that direction for my taste. Not a huge deal, just something I noticed. One thing I'd love to see improved is the self-serve bar. I wish more of the greens and seafood items were available for guests to serve themselves instead of having to request them from the server. I don't like feeling like I'm constantly asking for things, and I also prefer controlling my own portions. I know exactly how much I'll eat, so I'd rather take only what I need instead of having extra brought to the table. Along those same lines, some of the noodles came packaged in individual portions, and each package was more than I could finish. If they were available loose at the self-serve bar, I could've taken just the amount I wanted and wasted less food. Overall, the food was delicious, the service was friendly, and I had a great experience. And the price is very reasonable. I also learned they have more than 20 locations across the country, so I'll definitely be looking them up the next time I travel.

Came here for the promo where if you come with a party of 4+, one person eats free, which sounded like a great deal. Unfortunately, the experience was a bit mixed. The noodle and mushroom station looked pretty neglected; some trays had only one piece left and clearly needed refilling. It also wasn't very intuitive to navigate since plates weren't close by or easy to find. Same issue with drinks - I didn't realize soft drinks were included in the AYCE pricing because the cups weren't visible. I ended up opening a fridge since I saw that's where they were, and one of the employees (Zane) yelled at me in a pretty rude tone not to go back there. I explained I couldn't find the cups, but the interaction was already unpleasant and honestly put a damper on the rest of the night. If things were labeled or set up more clearly, that situation could've easily been avoided. On the positive side, Alex, who was our server for most of the night, was kind and warm. He witnessed the interaction and apologized, and made an effort to check in and let me know we could ask him for anything we needed, which I appreciated. As for the food, it didn't quite live up to expectations. The menu and photos highlight premium meats like wagyu, but none of the meats we tried had that marbling or tenderness you'd expect; they tasted more like standard cuts. Also, the poster outside advertised king crab, but instead, they were actually serving snow crab, which felt misleading. Overall, I'd say this was about a 3-3.5 star experience, but the negative service interaction brought it down to 2 stars for me. I recently visited Chongqing and had a very different (and much better) experience there compared to this location. Note that although one person eats free under the promo, it only covers the regular option ($36.95). Since we chose the premium ($47.95), the difference still had to be paid.

Fresh ingredients, delicious broth, and excellent service. One of my favorite hot pot spots in San Diego!

Great AYCE hot pot with a good variety of fresh meats, veggies, and soup bases. The sauce bar had plenty of options, and the staff was friendly and attentive throughout our meal. Everything came out quickly, and the restaurant was clean and comfortable. Definitely a great spot for hot pot in San Diego. Will be back!

Located in Kearny Mesa, San Diego CA. I wouldn't say this is 3 dollar signs, I would say 2 dollar signs as its cheaper than Haidilao. We came on January 14, 2026, a Wednesday with 5 persons. There is no wait in middle of the week on weekdays. There are 2 menu choices "regular" or "premium". At lunch, Regular costs $29, and Premium is $40 Monday to Thursday 11:30a-2:30p. Dinner Regular cost around $37, and Premium costs around $47 at the time I came. Step 1: choose soup base. Can choose 1 or 2 soups in a pot. This pot is shared by everyone at the table. We got spicy pork bone and chicken w/fish maw. Step 2: choose the meats, veggies, carbs. For Premium, you will get 8 more items that are options: Short Plate fatty beef, lamb shoulder, pork belly boneless, black pepper chicken, chicken gizard, marinated beef, beef aorta, beef tripe omasum, pork intestine, egg. Premium seafoods will have swai, shrimp paste, jumbo white shrimp, baby octopus, baby clam. For dinner, look at RED part of back menu for Premium, It includes waygu beef, waygu brisket, beef tongue, premium chuck roll, crawfish, snowcrab, mussels, snakeheads fish fillet, house beef tripe, beef ball, fortune bag and a couple more items. We came for lunch, when we ordered Premium, they gave us some of these items on red menu. Step 3: walk up to the veggie and sauce bar to get those yourself. Anyway, great experience, great service. There is no ambience. I am loving the quality and price of this place. Will come again often!

we were craving hot pot and decided to give this place a try due to its popular reviews. We went in on a Saturday night around 8pm, it wasn't very busy so we were seated right away. I'm still fairly new to hotpot so the menu and set up was easy to understand. Did split broths of mushroom and traditional. I don't eat so it's nice that they have veggie broth options and also some seafood in their regular ayce menu. This totally hit the spot. The broths were flavorful and the side/ veggie options were so good too. We almost finished our broths but were too full at the end to keep going. I did see the have happy hour but during the day, no late night. My only complain is that it feels a little pricey but I do understand that it is AYCE. I would definitely come back here next time I'm craving hot pot but not a place I could frequent too often due to the price.

Great ambience and food. The regular menu already comes with lamb, wagyu brisket and scallop. Premium upgrade $6. Weekend lunch price about $30. Great prompt service too.

Came here for their recently promoted happy hour which was not what we thought it would be. Although it was ACYE, we were only able to order 2 plates of meat per person. (And just once). There were other meat option like chicken but the seafood was also an additional cost. I will say their salad and other ingredients at the self serve bar were nice. I wished they did a better job of restocking dessert and the sauce bar since they were very low on everything.

    Ricky, the G.O.A.T

If you're lucky enough to get Ricky as your waiter at Liuyishou Hot Pot, just know you've already won. We came for the hot pot but stayed for Ricky's top-tier entertainment. Somehow he managed to keep our broth boiling, our drinks full, and our table laughing the entire time. He was patient while we took way too long deciding what to order, gave awesome recommendations, and made sure we didn't accidentally commit any hot pot crimes. The service was so good I'm half convinced he has a clone working the rest of the restaurant. The food was amazing, but Ricky definitely turned lunch into an experience. Give this man a raise... or at least unlimited hot pot. We'll definitely be back, and hopefully Ricky is working! Thanks Ricky, you're the man ! (:

Friends brought me here after the great experience they had a couple weeks ago. Very good. Meat was good quality. Price is fair. Our server, Zane, did a great job dealing with the 15 of us in our party. Definitely recommend.

I hadn't been to Liuyishou Hotpot in over a year, and the menu has definitely changed since my last visit. It's still good, but I noticed that a lot of the meats that used to be on the regular menu are now part of the premium option. I came for lunch this time, and their lunch special is great--just enough food to be satisfying without leaving you overstuffed. However, I couldn't resist and ended up going with the endless premium option anyway. Right after we sat down and ordered, a rush of people came in. Even though it got busy fast, our server stayed attentive and on top of things. The sauce bar was excellent with tons of choices, plus they even have a few recipe suggestions posted for beginners, which is a nice touch. The meat overall was delicious, and I really love how many soup base options they offer. Choosing a different base each visit is honestly my favorite part. Still a solid hotpot spot!

Came here on a Monday for dinner with a party of 4. There were available parking spots in the plaza. The restaurant was not busy at all, we were sat right away. We chose to do the regular AYCE menu for $36.95. There's a good amount of selections to choose from on the regular menu but there are quite a handful things that are only available on premium. We did half pork bone broth and half sukiyaki base. Both were pretty standard. For meats, we ordered mainly the chuck roll and beef short plate. Both had good sized cuts of the meat and were tender. We also tried the shrimp paste, which was good and the baby scallops - which in hindsight probably would've been better as normal size scallops as the baby ones kept getting lost in the broth. The self serve area had a lot of options, though some were near the bottom of the container. They eventually were refilled a bit. The sauce station had a lot to choose from, which I appreciated. Service was good and attentive, food always came out quickly. The restaurant itself didn't seem the cleanest in some areas. Under the table seemed dirty and there was water that dripped on my head from the ceiling near the sauce bar. Overall my first experience here was fine. The food was good but nothing to rave about and a bit pricey for what it was.

Service was amazing, the owner was very nice and hospitable. The meat was all very high quality, and the sides were amazing too. Very nice Sauce selection. The TV's make the experience even better too.

Ask the Community - Liuyishou Hotpot

Is AYCE everyday & is there a price difference on weekends?

AYCE is everyday and same price on weekends. It's $29.95 per person AND they charge for the soup base which may cost anywhere between $16 - $19

Where can I book a reservation? You guys don't even pick up the phone

On the weekday they are not busy, just walk in

Do they have gluten free options?

Not sure, but I found cooked baby cockroaches in their food, I'm not sure if that is gluten-free?

Do they accept walk-ins or do we need a reservation?

hello . Yes we do accept walk-in guests but as suggestions for weekends like Friday Saturday and Sunday please reserve at least 24 hours ahead and all reservations ( waitlist as well) reserved 10 mins in case too many walk in guests waiting too…

    Are you AYCE?

    Yes

Is the Liu's house special soup base only made with beef tallow and no pork broth?

hello we have 2 spicy broth but also other 6 non spicy broth which include the pork flavor. Welcome to join us and have a wonderful try. Thanks

Do they use szechuan peppercorns in all their broth?

thanks for your questions and the peppercorn only for spicy broth but we also have 6 choices of non-spicy broth for your need .

What are their hours on weekends?

    11:30-3; 5-10

Hi Liuyishou, are you open for business for weekday lunch? I tried to call the number provided but no answers. Please let me know. Thanks!

We started a tradition 5 years ago where we get together on my birthday at a different Korean BBQ joint with the goal to eat KBBQ at a different San Diego KBBQ restaurant to celebrate God blessing me with another year. We started at Gen Korean BBQ in 2022, Prime Grill in 2023, 356 KBBQ in 2024, Tsuruhaishi in 2025, and Kanpai BBQ & Shabu this year. My buddies and I got the KBBQ and Shabu option, which was delectable, scrumptious, and stomach-busting, but next year, we're sticking to KBBQ. Just sensory overload for our palates. Kanpai's customer service from their entire staff was impeccable and I really enjoyed the vibe. Kanpai is located in the competitive culinary battleground called the Convoy Asian District where there are a litany of Asian restaurants representing an armada of Asian cuisines. The restaurant is located within a busy strip mall that houses The Original Pancake House, Epic Wings N Things, Yonny Mini Hotpot, Imperial Mandarin, Tsuruhaishi, Yokoham Yakitori Koubou, it's next to Yuki Yuki, and it's across the street from Yu Spa. This is a busy shopping center, so parking can be challenging. They do take reservations, but only for groups of 6 or more and it has to be done 24 hours in advance. Kanpai is a bustling restaurant with two sections where one section is for Shabu and another section is for KBBQ/Shabu combined. It's a beautiful restaurant with wood slats on the ceiling, distressed laminate flooring, distressed tile, and white floral decor hanging from the ceiling. First section as you enter is designated for Shabu with tables containing convection stove top tables with chairs. The other room has tables with KBBQ grills in the middle surrounded by individual convection table top with chairs. The customer service by the Kanpai team was excellent where everyone was friendly, worked as a team, and were really responsive. Big ups to the Kanpai staff!! I've eaten at one other combo KBBQ and Shabu restaurant called Shabumi and I thought that spot was pretty good, but honestly I don't having gastronomical sensory overload when I dined there years ago. Kanpai has so much to offer for guests who want to have both KBBQ and Shabu. Price for dinner that includes Shabu and KBBQ is $47.95. Since it was my birthday, we decided to go big or go home, so we ordered the combo KBBQ and Shabu. For the Shabu, you choose two broth bases, so I chose tonkotsu and mushroom. An individual pot with the two broth bases is brought out and placed on your individual stove top. While the bases are heating up, you can choose from 10 different meats to cook into the broths and then you can go to their self service station and pick vegetables and other sides to place into your pot. For KBBQ, you can pick up to three different types of meats to come out. The star meats for KBBQ were the following: M-8 Wagyu Steak, M-8 Wagyu Cubes, US Wagyu Brisket, Prime Cut Steak, Beef Tongue, and Pork Belly. The star meats for Shabu were the following: Prime Angus Chuck Eye, US Wagyu Brisket, Australian Wagyu Brisket M-9, and Pork Belly. As part of the cost, there were a slew of self serve stations. Self serve stations for Shabu, appetizers, sauces, miso soup, beef curry, white rice, a variety of drinks and soda cans, and ice cream. Scoop yourself rocky road and coffee like the drink ice cream and you won't regret it. I ate so much, everything was tasty, and I thought we got great value for our money. There was just so much to choose from, which if you have the capacity, is a good thing. Thank you to my longtime friends aka brothers from other mothers for treating me and for the fun times celebrating another birthday God has blessed me with. Breaking bread at Kanpai with its delectable BBQ and Shabu and spending quality time with my lifelong pals were the proverbial icing on my birthday cake.

If a kid is under 7 they don't charge for them to split your meal with you and they can still get their own soup bowl and chair. Also, they have a kids meal option for 10 and under. My kids absolutely love being treated like real customers. They get to cook their own food and the team addresses them kindly and tends to them. By the nature of this type of meal there is a decent amount of checking in the waitstaff has to do like adjusting cook temps, delivering plates and drinks, coming back for add ons etc so it is a good restaurant experience for kids. They even have high high chairs (not a typo) for the babies. The food is good. Everything is prepped to order... you can literally see people slicing your meat or putting your vegetables together in the back. I come here because I want quality and not the volume of an ACYE place. I'd prefer to spend my calories wisely. I was surprised that it was full but no wait on a weekday. The kabocha squash was a little tricky to cook, the enoki mushrooms, cabbage, etc were much easier to deal with, lol. The real star was the wagyu beef. I loved all 3 cuts, and we ordered more of the chuck eye and some pork belly for our extra round. It has spoiled me for normal beef now. The ice cream was a nice extra, I had the black cherry and my friend had the chocolate malt crunch. We each enjoyed our flavors. I don't often spend $60+ on myself for dinner, so it was a nice treat. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We went about 5:15 on a Monday, so it wasn't quite as busy. When we left it was pretty packed, especially seeing as this is the last week fir the restaurant.
